It would appear that The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword HD had a cracking start to life in the US, becoming the best-selling game in the region in its launch month of July.
That's according to new data from Mat Piscatella, executive director and game industry advisor at The NPD Group. It wasn't the busiest month for new releases, but when you consider the fact that Skyward Sword HD only launched on the 16th of the month, and that Nintendo doesn't disclose digital sales to be included in these round-ups, it's a pretty strong achievement:
As you can see, owing to the fact that Nintendo doesn't share digital sales data, all Nintendo titles in that list are made up of physical sales only. Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War in second, as an example, is tracked both physically and digitally, with those combined sales being included here.
Skyward Sword HD also went straight to number one in the UK weekly physical charts, and in the Japanese weekly physical charts.
Have you picked up a copy of the game? Did you think it'd be soaring to number one in the charts? Let us know in the usual place.

It's nice to see Monster Hunter Stories 2 so high up.
But, yo, where's Ace Attorney?
Nintendo still charting at the top even without digital sales !
Great performance for MHS2 as well
Healthiest Nintendo platform in a long time.
Can nintendo please leave some breadcrumbs for the other companies please.
Very good to see MHS2 and NEO: the World ends with you on this list. I want 3d party games to do well also.
Good to see that people are showing Nintendo that they are willing to pay $60 for a Wii port.
Despite the loud vocal minority crying about the $60 price tag, the game still sells. Nice!
Well I for one am against Nintendo’s pricing structure for remasters/ports.
But I would happily welcome star fox / fzero / Metroid / punch out / DK ports so I hope they keep coming.
@Arkay yep, storm in a teacup. At least 95% of the people who bought it didn’t even know SixtyDollarGate happened. What a week that was. The fights, the paragraphs written, nobody cared. Nobody knew.
I'm happy to see Monster Hunter Stories 2 at the number 3 spot
I'm pleased Neo: The World Ends With You made the charts. Same with Monster Hunter Stories 2. A nice, varied chart overall with some of the usual suspects present.
@WiltonRoots,
So true, once again the minorities thinking they are are actually the majority, the Switch caters for a much wider demographic than the core gamers on internet sites, who are very hard to please.
@johnvboy there’s probably a massive fight taking place on a real ale forum right now. Walls of text, people accusing each other of ad-homs and strawmen, over a cask ale we never even knew existed. Or to add to that two or three blokes on a hifi enthusiast site going tooth and nail over the price of valves for their amps.
I paid the $60 for Skyward Sword, because I didn't play it on Wii. The idea of motion controls for the whole game turned me off. I'm glad I waited, because I'm enjoying the game now with button controls. Was worth it.
I've been thoroughly enjoying my playthrough of Skyward Sword. It's nice to see it's getting the appreciation it deserves.
@WiltonRoots,
How did you know, I am having a bit of a battle with a chap on Haletotheale.com
@johnvboy "What Nintendo desperately needs to do, to turn things round, is to remaster [insert game that sold 15,000 copies here], the people will buy it in droves..."
I was told Skyward Sword would bomb because it's "full price" by some people that like to pay $70 for their games.
I jest, but people did insist that this game wouldn't (or shouldn't) sell well. That's not for one or a few people to decide, tbh.
Can’t say I’m very interested, but I may eventually pick this up... someday...
@Crono1973 I think we lost this battle with MK8 Deluxe and Link’s Awakening remake selling for the full $60. DKC Tropical Freeze & Pikmin 3 too.
On the other hand, I am surprised Breath of the Wild and Mario Odyssey are only $60. Those are great deals!
My eBay copy should arrive next week. $47 after shipping & taxes.
@WiltonRoots,
Nintendo should simply make games and consoles that solely cater for the core Nintendo fans, as that worked out so well for them on previous generations.
I need to get that game going....
@johnvboy That won't in these time and age. The appeal has to be across gender/age/ethnicity to survive making games. Fans will always be there it's building more fan users that will keep them alive and making more games in-house or indie or 3rd party developers. Just going alone isn't a good Business plan or straggly now days especially in game developments.
@WiltonRoots I never even heard about SixtyDollarGate until you mentioned it just now.
Whether something is a port or not isn't a factor for me. There are games made recently for the Switch that aren't $60. I played it on Wii and I've wanted to play it again in HD so I paid; it's a $60 adventure. But ALSO GameStop and Amazon have been selling Skyward physical for like $10+ dollars off for a while now so I hope the moral objectors pick it up on the cheap. That's like $30 if you trade it in after you're done. Or rent it from Game Fly. There are options.
@Crono1973 but it doesn't affect us who want new games at all, these old games don't fill up yearly release slots at all. Mario Kart 9 is right around the bend.
@Crono1973 Well yeah, I mean not surprising really. Look at Super Mario all-stars. Nintendo doesn't even have to try. They know their audience well.
I mean they managed to convince them a 30$ toy is essential and thus made 90$ off a 10 year old game.
Basically they can slap 60$ on anything and it will sell regardless of quality.
Is there a website or Twitter account I can follow to find the most recent US video game sales data? I'm REALLY surprised by Monster Hunter Stories 2. And please no one say VGChartz.com
Great news for Skyward Sword. Really glad this game got remastered and it's a well done remaster too.
Wouldn't be surprised to hear by the end of the year that SS HD already outsold the Wii version.
Skyward Sword HD deserves it! Best sword combat in the Zelda series hands down. All 3D Zeldas going forward needs to adopt this play style. The button controls are awesome!
Nice to see such a performance!
My contribution is not there, though. I got it digital
I wonder how many million copies it'll sell within a year
@WiltonRoots Yeah, this is the absolute first time I’m hearing about “sixtydollargate,” and I happily bought the game at launch.
I got the Loftwing Amiibo because it looks cool but I figured I'd test it for fast travel. The feature is damn near useless. I think everyone complaining is a "quality of life feature" is overselling it. It's almost annoying to use. I thought maybe it took you back to Skyloft and it really just takes you to the sky and you can't use it between locations on the surface and you can't use it while flying so you have to land before you return. It's just... A thing.
And Breath of the Wild is an $80 game. The expansion pass just makes us think it's $20 cheaper but be honest, who didn't get it?
@Vexx234 Numerous down years in Nintendo's history prove that they definitely can't just slap 60$ on anything and expect it to sell, regardless of quality.
Maybe consider that Skyward Sword HD is a great game that really appeals to people, and on a platform that makes it very accessible to play. Difficult to accept, I know.
@Arkay @imgrowinglegs It was my own personal term I coined for the absolute state a small group of people worked themselves into in comment sections on sites like this...they're like modern day Che Guevaras.

@Turbo857 I want to agree! But maybe I just haven’t figured it out right yet? I end up button mashing (stick flicking I guess haha) as the strikes I expect will land often don’t due to the way enemies block. Wouldn’t them blocking their left side mean you should slice their right? Doesn’t seem to work for me most times ha! I love the game but the controls have been frustrating. Same with using items ,
You mean there was a disconnect between people posting on here/Twitter and the mass market? That people posting on here/Twitter aren’t as representative as they think they are.
Well this is unheard of.
This has never happened before.
@SwitchForce,
I was being sarcastic, of course Nintendo need to reach a much wider audience, which they have been doing since the Wii was released.
@electrolite77,
Yes I can't get my head around that one either, I mean games selling well that get complaints on internet sites etc, judt boggles my mind.
So much for the hate campaigns against Skyward Sword HD. I already played the original SS on Wii, though would like to get the Switch HD edition one day.
@swoose Never said it wasn't a great game though. I mean hey if you wanna pay 60$ for a 10 year old game with minimal improvements that's on you. Lucky for me I got it for 30$. =D
Oh wait I'm sorry I mean 90$. I forgot the extra "QoL" feature fee. Made just for the fans of course because Nintendo loves your wallet er...I mean you!
Started playing it. Felt a bit nostalgic but got bored about of 1/3 of the way through. Only thing I remember exciting about this game was sneaking into Zelda's room and even that was a bit of a let down.
@Vexx234 I paid a lot less than that.
I... honestly did not expect this... Perhaps I was a little too pessimistic about Skyward Sword HD's reception.
@IronMan30 that are probably the same people that predicted the Switch wouldn't sell because Nintendo "missed the holiday sales".
It's Zelda, of course it would sell. Anyone saying otherwise = braindead moron.
Woah! Little Nemo the Dream Master has a remaster and it broke the top seven!! Nicccceeeee!
@Tandy255 the funny thing is that everyone losing their minds about pricing can easily find every game you mentioned cheaper with very little effort.
Most games can be found at launch for $10 off, so $50. Personally, if I really want a game then that’s sufficient for me. If I don’t need it at launch and am willing to wait, then the sky is the limit. I bought Pikmin 3 and DK Tropical for $30 each by waiting a while since I already owned them on WiiU so was in no rush to pay full price for them.
I understand the concept and point that Nintendo shouldn’t be charging $60 for 10+ year old games that in theory should be available on eShop or Nintendo Online. But it’s 2021 and this is a free market, always wait for a deal.
@damien33ad
I think SS blows away Wind Waker personally. Always felt WW and MM we’re overrated 3D Zeldas. Good games but they don’t belong in the same breath as Ocarina of Time, SS, TW, or Botw
@neogyo Hmm, when you approach an enemy you have a rather small window to land your strike at their opening before they shift their defense. Also, some enemies react to the position you hold your sword before swinging so that could be takin’ into account as well. I played a lot of this on the Wii and Switch so I don’t have too much trouble striking at an opening before blocking. Practice makes perfect
@damien33ad
I hear ya. But as great as OoT is, the dungeons can’t compare to SS and TW in my opinion. Regardless, each Zelda game is a unique quality adventure. But you were disappointed with BOTW? Too much open world mechanics?
