Reminder: Space Invaders Invincible Collection Launches Today On Switch eShop In The West

Too late. I would’ve absolutely bought this if it would’ve launched last year, but instead they released a gimped collection that I paid $30 for. Not paying $60 for the exact same content plus some ancient arcade ports.

I think I preferred the price when it was 10p a go down the arcade.

@Gerald there was a japanese discount. It was a 30% but made it fairer. I bought the arcade collection on the japanese eshop with the discount. Totally worth it.

Honestly, I don't see a point in getting the normal collection when Space Invaders Forever exists and has all of the games that made the Invincible Collection picking up. Half the price and you more than enough bang for your buck with Extreme alone

Glad it's coming here but I'd only CONSIDER buying it at that price if it at least contained Space Invaders 95 and Space Invaders Extreme 2 too... Why are they missing?! Two of the best in the series! 95 is so charming.

Recently got my physical copy from Strictly Limited.

Loving it.

$60 for games that are mostly 40-30 years old misses the mark for me by about $30-$40.

Super annoyed at this. I bought Space Invaders Forever figuring they were just screwing the west over by making the rest of the games only available on the Strictly Limited physical copies. Turns out they were screwing us over even more than that. I'd have dropped $60 for this collection had I not bought that one, but since I did I'm waiting for a sale, which will take forever and not be much of a discount because this is ININ Games we're talking about and they're an absolutely garbage publisher from my limited experience with their releases.

I own both collections (I bought Forever because I was impatient), and there’s really no reason why those who own Forever should bother with the Invincible Collection.

All the good stuff is included in Forever.

Invincible includes the original Space Invaders and some other oddities, but none of them hold up particularly well today.

Had this included Extreme 2, this would have been a must buy, but as it stands, it’s grossly overpriced considering how much more bang for your gaming buck you will be getting from Forever.

Available to everyone would have been a not limited physical release in time. Now, as some people says, is too late, as we've been "treated" with a selection in physical form, and we won't be double dipping.

I, for one, didn't buy that little collection, but if the complete one is going to be digital-only -which could have arrived anyway a year and a half ago-, I'll certainly wait for a massive discount.

I would love to buy this after the inevitable price drop/sale.

I like to play Space Invaders and drink Space Invader, a pretty tasty IPA you can get around here.

Not sure about the hate for this. Though I'll admit I did receive my Strictly Limited Games Special Edition of Invincible Collection and I've been playing a good amount of Space Invaders, Lunar Rescue and Extreme.

Invincible Collection has those 3 games, plus the original game in Black & White and Colour, Part 2, Space Cyclone, Lunar Rescue, Majestic 12, Super Space Invaders '94, and Space Invaders Deluxe (with Space Invaders Versus and Lunar Loonies.)

Looking back at the news and the comments, I realised something. If you really wanted this game, you're better off ordering the special edition from Strictly Limited. for €90 you get the game, 2 OSTs, a history book, arcade-style instruction cards for each game, coasters, a badge and posters. So IMO, the physically special edition is way better than the $60 digital download by a country mile.

I will put this on my wish list — hoping for a sale to drop it to more like $40 (which is still high but something I am willing to pay).
For fans of physical, it appears Strictly Limited has about 100 remaining for USD $72/ UKP £60.

@SepticLemon The original versions of Space Invaders and Part 2 are all basically the same game. Majestic 12 and '94 are basically the same game as well. Space Cyclone and Lunar Rescue are neat additions but are more so novelties (in my personal opinion), Space Invaders DX is still about the same as some of the the other Space Invader games even if it has some nice bonuses in it, and '95 Attack of the Lunar Loonies isn't in the collection.

As much as I love space invaders I can’t see paying 60 us for this.

@Fighting_Game_Loser Part 2 isn't really the same game, it has enemies that can split into two, and there was the occasional cutscene between levels. As for Majestic 12 and Super 94, they are almost the same game, but Majestic 12 has a level select and different bonus levels compared to 94, but they are similar. I really like Lunar Rescue, which is one of the more unique Space Invaders games in the collection. I mixed up the parody mode in Deluxe with Lunar Loonies. Now that I'm watching Lunar Loonies on Youtube, now I wish it was in the collection, but I still like my special edition pack.

I love the genre and buy a lot of shmup releases full price at day one to support such a niche genre, but I have to admit $60 for this collection of games is too much. It would help if Space Invaders Extreme 2 and Infinity Gene were included.

@Gradius This is why I think owning the Special Edition is better than the digital download because you get a lot more, sure, you are paying €90 for it, but there's so much in the special edition compared to the digital download. The Space Invader history book is a really good read.

They didn't use the original DS version? The only other version of Extreme I know of is the Steam/PC version and that version was terrible.

EDIT: After a quick google search I found out that's exactly the version of Extreme they used. Eugh.

@SepticLemon Yeah if you find value in the full collection, that's completely cool! I just don't find a lot of value in it since I mainly want to check out the newer games since the other games can be found in other collections (also a lot of these older games don't really hold up value to me probably because I'm a teenager lmao).

@Onion Yeah, it's based on the Steam version. At least it uses music that's close to the DS game. The 360 version, for reasons beyond me, used different music.

Wow, and I thought the physical release was overpriced! At least that version has resale value that will likely go up quite a bit over time.

I literally just created an Japan eShop account last weekend to get the “Space Invaders Invincible Collection Special Edition”; assuming Taito would never release it to the West. I think these games are iconic and find it wild it took them this long to do it.

@Fighting_Game_Loser Taito is a major player when it comes to the beginning of the Japanese games industry. Back then, companies were pirating and bootlegging popular stuff that Atari made for the western market. Konami back then was known for making their own version of pong, which in fairness looks and sounds a lot like the Atari original. But Taito really wanted to make their own game, they were inspired by Atari's Breakout. But rather than out right copying it, they would make they own spin on it, where rather than a bouncing ball, there was a cannon shooting upwards, and the bricks started off as moving people, which got changed to aliens, and Space Invaders became a massive hit in Japan. So much so that abandoned bowling alleys would get reopened as, Invader Houses, which would evolve into the arcades that Japan would end up getting in the 80s and 90s.

@Fighting_Game_Loser Heh, kids should learn about the history of gaming, from Ralph Baer and Magnavox to Ted Dabney with Atari, the fall of the gaming industry in the US, with the rise of the gaming industry in Europe happening at the same time. There's an amazing amount of history that happened in only a few decades.

Under no circumstances would I pay that amount of money for this game. Picked up a couple of the Konami collections recently which have similar amounts of content for about £3 each. So yeah, knock 95% off and I'll consider it.

I did a double take when I read the headline. That's way too overpriced for the amount of content you get. A shame, I was hoping to get HDMI versions of a few of the SI titles previously featured on Taito Legends.

You know what would be cooler? If they just added the original Space Invaders to Forever as DLC rather than have people spend double the price for a bunch of stuff they don't want

If you want to play this collection it’s worth it. $60 ain’t that much. If I wanted the game I would pay it. These games have became niche and are priced to make a profit. If it was gonna sell millions the price would be far lower. Space Invaders extreme alone is worth $30 dollars.

This is a lot of games ... but way too high of a initial price for me. I looked into the Strictly Limited physical version — but USD$70 plus international shipping made it too much. Plus, I have the Space Invader Extreme 1 and 2 and Revolution on DS and I have Space Invaders 91 and 95 on Taito Legends 2 (both PS2 and Xbox versions). I may buy at a discount sometime later.

You knock that calculator every time you don't need it, like almost always, but the moment you need to get the square root of a logarithm of some massive number, and then take a percentage of that, well, we'll see who's laughing then.

It'll be on sale for 80 percent off within 6 months but will still be too expensive for what it is.

@msvt Not really Switch tax, more like Taito tax for always charging so much for their back catalog. What's worse, it's Space Invaders, the proto shmup that everyone else copied and improved upon, leaving the original behind. With the exception of Extreme, this collection should have been $20 at most. Taito needs to chill.

Funny thing was, that I caved in last month and bought a Japanese digital copy, then it was updated later to include the extra games, signaling the game’s long overdue western release.

Another completely insanely overpriced ININ release, shocker.

Everything about this release is messed up, and it's a shame that such a legendary franchise is being treated so badly. We call everything "legendary" these days, but SI is truly the OG of video games. There has never been another game that had such a powerful impact on the field. Space Invaders was not the first video game, but for better or for worse it shaped what video games are today.

So what do these guys do? Release Space Invaders Forever, which was mildly overpriced and didn't include the original Space Invaders (I guess "forever" doesn't mean the same to everybody).

And then, a year later, release this collection, which is WILDLY overpriced and includes three games that are all the same game (wowee, a black and white version AND a color version!) and doesn't include Extreme 2!

I just feel like there should be a happy medium in there somewhere, a fairly priced option for those who see the value of having the original Space Invaders in their collection but don't need three copies of it, and if you 're going to charge $60 we should really get both Extreme games which are probably the most fun Space Invaders has ever been.

@JasmineDragon Yeah, Taito has been making some crazy decisions in the last few years. Look at the Darius collections as a great example of "Go get the big mega bundle pack, or you'll be missing out and not getting the best bang for your buck!"

It's just a damn shame that they'll treat their customers who just get the regular editions as if they don't deserve it. It's a very elitist culture. I'm glad that I got my SIIC Special edition from Strictly Limited games. But it really sucks for those who didn't!

I own the physical editions of both compilations, and I'll confess that I almost regret buying the (overpriced) Invincible Collection. As far as I am concerned, it's purely a collector's item, so, unless you're interested in procuring a physical edition, stick with Forever if buying digitally.

Invincible doesn't give you anything worth paying the absurd premium for (unless you masochistically want to destroy your wallet just to own the original 70s versions of Space Invaders).

I mean, AU$90?! These guys are on crack thinking that they can get away with charging that much for one of the simplest games in the biz.

I glad I bought the JP version of the Invincible Collection when it first came out. Taito added English text (oddly enough, Arkanoid vs. SI was already in English) and the games that used to be LE only via patches.

I disagree that the best content is all there for SI Forever. SI Forever doesn't have Super Space Invaders/Majestic Twelve.

To be honest, I'd only ever consider a collection of Space Invaders games at $10 or less. The current price seems like highway robbery.

I actually needed to download an emulator and ROM to study.

This is one of those things I would only buy on sale... and a 50% off or more sale at that.

@JasmineDragon Yeah, it's as if Taito think they're the Disney of the Japanese games industry. Sure they're the ones who started it, but at this point, they're being very big-headed about it. I guess they weren't going to get much business with Ninja Saviors, but Darius and Space Invaders are bigger Taito titles, so they made sure they could make a big stink about how big these games are. At least the western version of the Boardgame edition was better than the Japanese version of the same edition! The Western version actually uses plastic pieces in a presentable box with pre-cut cards. But the Japanese version had all cardboard parts, including the player pieces, and you had to cut the cards and pieces out yourself with scissors!!!

We might sometimes think that Nintendo is arrogant, but I think that in the last couple of years, Taito could be as arrogant, or even more than Nintendo!

I love Space Invaders. An all-time classic.

Having said that, I got the one that came out a few months ago that had the newer version of the game, which is a heck of a lot more fun than the outdate arcade port, so I won't be picking this up.

@kingbk I've enjoyed it a lot, been playing a lot of the original game and Lunar Rescue! But I will admit you really do need to be a retro gamer to enjoy and appreciate the collection. Not to mention that the download has very little value compared to the special editions that Strictly Limited Games are selling. They still have some stock left, but it is a limited release like Limited Run Games. But at least you get a bunch of OSTs, a history book, drinks coasters, arcade cards and posters for the €90 price tag. It's steep, sure, but I honestly believe that the special editions are better packs than the regular edition and download.

I still think it's funny that people use to download games onto the ti83 (or was it ti89) and play them, and these days, we're downloading calculators onto our portable gaming machines.

@nocdaes as much as I wouldn’t pay £55 for this Space Invaders collection, I probably would pay that for a collection that has Rainbow Islands, Bubble Bobble, and New Zealand Story. Still hoping they get released on Arcade Archives

@Gerald Thing is, Hamster doesn't have agreements with Taito, meaning that Taito wants to do things their way. So unless they do a Capcom Arcade Stadium of their own, we'll have to wait. Though in honesty, it sounds like if we want our Taito fix, we'll have to get the Egret II Mini. I'm still tempted by that damn thing! lol!

Lunar Rescue is really fun. I wish Infinity Gene was included that game is incredible.

@blackknight77 Lunar Rescue is great! I got to play the arcade version a few years back at a retro con when I heard about the game being praised so much on a retro gaming podcast. It's kind of funny how not many people know much about the game, and how it's part 3 of Space Invaders.

@Kiwi_Unlimited It was 83/84 (some 85/86) most students of my gen had. The 89 was the premium one that was also usually considered too "smart" of a device and schools usually said they prohibited that for tests.
