Coming on the heels of James Bond's Aston Martin DB5 rolling into Rocket League, Epic Games has announced that Season 4 of the free-to-play motorsport soccer game is dropping on Wednesday 11th August and it's bringing a bunch of new modes and some new Wild West-themed bits and pieces, too.
First up on the list of additions is Deadeye Canyon, a new dusty arena to play in. There's also a new car as part of the Rocket Pass Premium which goes by the name 'Outlaw' (as you can see above), plus various doohickeys with which to decorate your ride.
More competitive tournaments are coming, with 2v2 and Extra Mode being added to the roster. Limited Time Modes are also starting on 12th August, with 2v2 Heatseeker kicking things off followed by something called Speed Demon in 19th August (a mode which "combines mutators, the speed of Boomer Ball without the wild bounces, demos on contact, and a fast respawn timer", apparently), and Spring Loaded ("the Rumble variant that is currently a mutator option in Private Matches") coming later in the month.
There's also streamer safe music and some other features — check the full lowdown in this section of the official PR blurb:
New Rocket Pass - The new Outlaw car and 70+ Tiers of unique items will be available for those who unlock Rocket Pass Premium.
Deadeye Canyon Arena - The new Deadeye Canyon Arena will be available for all standard Playlists when Season 4 goes live.
New LTMs - 2v2 Heatseeker will be live as the featured LTM on August 12 Speed Demon, an LTM that combines mutators, the speed of Boomer Ball without the wild bounces, demos on contact, and a fast respawn timer, will follow on August 19. Spring Loaded, the Rumble variant that is currently a mutator option in Private Matches, will also be added later this month.
Expanded Competitive Tournaments - With the addition of 2v2 and Extra Modes Tournaments, the daily schedule of Competitive Tournaments will be expanded in every region.
Streamer Safe Music Feature - There will be a new Audio Setting added where players can turn off copyright protected music for streaming and videos.
Additional Updates - Undersized party Rank restrictions, improvements to Casual Matches, and general quality of life improvements.
Are you a Rocket League fan? It is, after all, quite possibly the best football game on Switch. Does any of the above tempt you to start your engines again? Let us know below.

I'm automatically pre-tempted to play anything Rocket League dishes out. Sounds like a good update. Of course I would play the hell out of it no matter what they included (new fast food restaurant themed arena, um, disgusting, but hell yeah I'll play it!).
Glad Psyonix started to see that they need to do more with the game. Not for me personally, i have 2200 hours in it and will gladly double them even if nothing changed, but so many people have been asking for new and interesting stuff. Themed items and 2v2 tournaments being some of them.
Being this game first came to the Switch as a purchased game rather than F2P, I can't help but wonder if the people that did purchase it digital or physical actually get these updates. Does anybody know?
Looking forward to the new season and have the credits there for the next pass. I have hit level 125 on the current Rocket Pass.
@PoliticallyIncorrect Since this game is now Free to Play, everyone gets these updates. If you bought the Digital version or Physical version prior to it going F2P, you got a bunch of bonuses for previously owning it. The other nice thing is that if you own the Physical copy, you no longer need to use the cartridge to play!
@PoliticallyIncorrect Yeah, the updates are for everyone. It's a live service game that's always evolving. Those that bought the game before it went FTP got some bonus items.
@OorWullie @PeterPanana Thanks for the reply! Been wondering this for some time.
stopped playing the game, because epic games is cancer
@6ch6ris6 okay, harsh. You (presumably) enjoyed it before Epic bought it and it’s free to play, so they ain’t getting your money. Bit of an overreaction to absolutely nothing.
@PessitheMystic the game is amazing. perfectly balanced multiplayer. but everyone who plays it is still supporting epic. the higher their player count, the more money they can make. you dont need to purchase something from them to be part of the system.
I hope they add a covered wagon! Day one buy for me.
I haven't touched this game in YEARS. Honestly, I wonder if I'll be able to drive properly if I go back to it.
@PoliticallyIncorrect To be clear: legacy owners don't get this new stuff for free (new cars and hats and stuff). When it went F2P we got a small cache of old things as a thank-you but now we need to buy stuff just like everyone else.
Of course this doesn't apply to stuff like game modes, arenas, and tournament options etc though.
@OorWullie @60frames-please @Dogorilla Do you guys have access to season 4 tournaments? I still can't access tournaments. I'm in US, on the Switch, and the tournament page still says "SCHEDULE UNVAVAILABLE" "More coming soon".
Yeah, I've already lost a few! Sorry, sounds like you need to contact Psyonix
@WoomyNNYes I did have one tournament I couldn't join. I joined it, waited for it to start, but I never got loaded in to be able to play it. I cancelled or dropped out from the front menu, and got a 10 minute block as punishment (for them not loading me into the tournament). I don't know what happened. But I've been in other tournaments with Season 4 on my Switch and on my PS5 (I have separate accounts for all my systems I play Rocket League on).
@StefanN We got 2v2 tournaments, and other cool stuff besides
@WoomyNNYes I can access scheduled tournaments no problem but when I go to 'Find Tournament', the list is empty. Oddly, if I hit down a few times while tapping A, I can sometimes select one but it's never open to join. If I create a tournament, I'm the only person joined when the time runs out. That's strange you can't even view scheduled tournaments. What about custom ones?
@WoomyNNYes I'll check next time I play the game but I've never actually touched the tournaments, I've only ever played casually.
@OorWullie @60frames-please @Dogorilla Issue solved. I can now see tournaments. Under GAMEPLAY settings tab, my tournament region was set to South Africa, for some reason? (I'm in north america)
(Rocket League support replied to me within 12 hours with the solution. So, that's great. Well done, on their part.)
@WoomyNNYes Nice, glad things are resolved. I had a tournament today where I couldn't join the actual game. It was the second game, we had just won, and then the next game never started for me. After a few minutes it said I'd lost, the normal screen after losing where it shows results and says top 16 or whatever. Frustrating. I hope they squash these kind of tournament bugs soon! Oh, and this was on PS5.
