Nintendo has shared an updated list of Europe's most-downloaded Switch eShop games, revealing which titles were the most popular during May 2021.
Perhaps coming as little surprise thanks to its 30th April release date, New Pokémon Snap managed to gobble up plenty of downloads throughout the month of May to top this month's list. Last month's winner, Minecraft, has to settle for third spot, with Miitopia jumping straight into second place in its debut month.
You can check out the full list below. It's based on the number of Nintendo eShop downloads (so no physical sales) in European territories during the whole month:
- New Pokémon Snap
- Miitopia
- Minecraft
- Among Us
- Mario Kart 8 Deluxe
- Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury
- Super Mario Party
- Subnautica
- Stardew Valley
- Animal Crossing: New Horizons
- Pokémon Sword
- Subnautica: Below Zero
- Stick Fight: The Game
- Monster Hunter Rise
- The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
Did you download any of these titles on Switch last month? Any surprises in the top 15? Tell us below.

I'm surprised/impressed by how well Miitopia is doing.
Honest question; Why do people buy Nintendo first party games on the eShop when you can usually get them much cheaper physically?
Was Stick Fight: The Game on sale or something? Seems like a relative unknown compared to the rest of the titles on that list.
@RainbowGazelle I would say just like with everything else from streaming to delivery. It's all about he convenience, also I would assume for the nature of the Switch it make more since having your games on the go?
Miitopia, such a great game, also Among Us is still on the top 5?
@Scrubicius I guess. Is it worth paying so much extra for, though? I guess it is to many people.
Miitopia is my game of the year so far
@RainbowGazelle I can get all of them on my Switch and don't have to switch cartridges, and games don't really become cheaper when you think about shipping fees.
Also, they are usually the same price in stores as on the eShop. Some places they are even more expensive physically.
Not surprising at this point that Arcade Archives titles are ignored. People just prefer to fill their SD cards with games available physically for less money, as @RainbowGazelle says. I guess I'm too old for this mindset...
@RainbowGazelle I guess it depends where you are as to whether or not they're cheaper. Plus you can use your gold coins to get discounts. The only one I've ever bought digital was Animal Crossing because I knew that I'd be playing it for small periods each day and I didn't want to have to swap out my cartridge all the time. I wish I'd done the same with Smash Bros and would consider it for the next Mario Kart. But other games I'd rather not fill up my SD card and, at least where I am, they are often cheaper physical.
@RainbowGazelle Funny story about that for my Switch. On launch day I was at a friends house so we could get our Switches together and share the experience. The delivery truck arrived with my Switch and the ONE game I pre-ordered: BoTW. I unpacked the Switch and put the game in... and nothing. The game didn't work. The Switch didn't even recognise the cartridge. So I took it out and found that somehow I had a blank cartridge. It didn't even have the metal strips on the back. I then had to spend ages on my friends crappy wifi downloading the game. Four hours later I got to play on my Switch. It's made me a paranoid about physical Switch games.
I buy digital mostly because of the convenience. I like having all of my games (or most, at least) available all of the time. I have a lot of games, and it's nice not having to worry about a bunch of game carts.
Some years ago, I moved between continents and had to get rid of tons of stuff including a bunch of movie DVDs, books, game cases, etc. It really sucked. Digital can be more expensive at times, but it's worth it to me for the convenience and peace of mind knowing I don't have to worry about losing anything. I don't have much room to store stuff nowadays, either.
it is so depressing to see Monster Hunter Rise so low down
Throwing in my hat at the physical vs digital discussion.
You know my posture in the thing, but I'm gonna say this: the other day when it was going to be Children's Day in Mexico a store had some Switch games on sale and I got Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe and Paper Mario: The Origami King for 1100 Mexican pesos each when games typically cost between 1400 and 1700 pesos (about $70 and $85 if you will).
If I had gotten them digitally I would've paid about 4500 pesos/$225 (Paper Mario costs 1700 pesos on the Mexican eShop), that's too much for me, but 3300 pesos? Sure.
That's $165, it may be expensive by American prices but totally acceptable as a Mexican price.
Just mentioning on the digital Vs physical thing that you also get gold coins for physical games that came out within the last 24 months
@RainbowGazelle I'd say physical is the more expensive option in most countries. I took a quick look at Super Mario Odyssey's prices where I live, lowest price is 54€ shipped, go to a store and you're most likely spending 60€, go to eShop, get yourself a voucher and you can get the same game for 50€ immediately or wait for a sale and get it for 40€.
Of course sometimes you can get a good deal and then I go for physical instead. Like when I preordered Pikmin 3 for Wii U for 30€.
They don’t ever release US numbers... do they...
(That’s more is a statement then a question, so I left off the question mark.)
@a1904 True but you get FIVE TIMES as many gold points when you buy digital vs physical. And sometimes you get bonus gold points on top of that (when pre-ordering first party games).
Miitopia ftw!
@RainbowGazelle especially in Europe...
Digital version of Botw is still £60 but the physical is like £40 or £45.
Thats not even a small difference either, you can buy 4 physical first party Nintendo games for the cost of 3 digital ones.
Thats a huge difference, especially if you have like me, 10 first party Nintendo games.
you also get gold coins for physical games that came out within the last 24 months
@a1904 Is it 24 months for you? I've found that I cannot redeem physical copies after 12 months...
With Mario Kart 8 Deluxe STILL selling that well. Why on earth would Nintendo release a successor any time soon?
@COVIDberry odd, should only happen if it is a pre owned copy where someone has already redeemed it but I redeemed a bunch of 2019 games just fine a while ago
Physical all the way
@a1904 I note that you're in the UK. Are the Americas disadvantaged here, or just we Canadians? I wonders, I wonders...
did any of these games come out in may?
@Mgene15 Miitopia did
@RainbowGazelle Why extra? If allot work and resource was put into the game and if the game is worth it.
@Late @The_New_Butler @Grandiajet @Ogbert @NorseGamerTommy
Thanks for the insights, guys. In the UK, games tend to be far cheaper physically. I didn't realise it was different in other European countries. Please pardon my ignorance. Plus, I can certainly see the convenience argument.
@RainbowGazelle Also, you can pay £84 for 2 game vouchers, making each game £42 which is usually how much you'd find it for at retailers or it can work out cheaper as places like GAME tend to charge more! See: https://ec.nintendo.com/GB/en/pretickets/70020000000081
EDIT: Apologies, I was skimming the comments really fast and thought nobody else mentioned it. But at least I found the correct link so that you can browse the list on any device
@The_New_Butler that's one time use. Not something that would help when buying 10 or more first party Nintendo games.
@COVIDberry Unfortunately for North America copies of physical games only have 1 year from their release date to claim the gold coins.
@The_New_Butler well thats still convoluted and it doesn't give you access to gold points either.
You need to purchase the vouchers which cost $99 for a pair, use them to redeem only a select number of games and then download those games.
I rather just save myself the storage, get the games physically and get the gold points too.
@The_New_Butler
Do research before talking bs please.
"Are Nintendo Switch Game Vouchers eligible for My Nintendo Gold Points?
Yes. You will receive Gold Points when you purchase a set of Nintendo Switch Game Vouchers, but you will not receive additional Gold Points when you redeem a voucher on a game."
