Pokémon fans located in America have recently noticed Pokémon Trading Cards are no longer available at Target stores around the country. It's all to ensure the "safety" of guests and team members, and will take full effect on May 14th.
"To ensure the safety of our guests and team members effective May 14th, MLB, NFL and Pokémon Trading Cards will no longer be sold in stores until further notice. "
Target provided a similar statement to the website Bleeding Cool, clarifying this is only a temporary move and that customers would still be able to purchase trading cards online at Target.com.
This suspension seemingly stems from the high demand for trading cards due to the pandemic. It was so bad at one Target that a 35-year-old man was assaulted by four men - aged between 23 to 35 - and pulled out a gun to defend himself. No shots were fired and the attackers fled.

Arceus save us all.
i'll trade anyone my bag of gas for a pack of pokemon cards
I'm just sad that kids can't play card games because of idiots.
I see cards available all the time at Walmart, Walgreens, Dollar General and GameStop. There’s no shortage I can see other than the 25th anniversary cereal and McDonalds cards.
Pretty much all the tcgs besides magic seem to be going crazy right now. I'm glad they'll still be carrying yugioh and digimon, but that doesn't mean I'll find any in stock. Still haven't seen any ghosts from the past out in the wild.
with all the problems in the world, homeless people, racism, bigotry, murder and a global pandemic, this is what GROWN ADULTS ARE FIGHTING OVER? even if the pandemic ever ends, I am just going to stay locked in my home, to be safe against this crazy mixed up world.
Imagine pulling a gun out and attacking people over f**king Pokemon cards.
Wow grown men were beating each other over some cards for kids
Read the story, the guy pulled his gun to defend himself when the four guys attacked him leaving the store, probably to steal his cards.
But it's sad to think you should carry a gun to defend yourself.
The USA is crazy.
@RodSD64 Not any crazier then any other country.
@BrintaPap How is it scary if he got assaulted by 4 grown men 🤔
As a Target employee, this is wonderful news. The scalpers are a dangerous nuisance in my store.
Stalking our card vendors, annoying our customers, and being rude to our staff are a few of their favorite things.
@Nintendoforlife I dont know man, im glad that in my country that when I go to school or work or just walking outside the chance of having a person next to me had a gun on him is slim to none where in usa its about 70% or higher
@WallyWest
I think they just wanted to buy them.
The Pokémon Trading Card Game... fun for all ages*!
Think Walmart is doing the same with Yugioh.
Can at least tell you this, even if a store stops selling Magic cards, that stuff will still be there for a few years.
Can confirm. I was in Target a few weeks back to buy some stuff needed around the home, and this was happening with sports cards (hence the rule for MLB, NFL, and NBA too). No one was there for Pokemon from what I've seen.
@GameOtaku This, I see cards constantly here. Given, they're older sets, but they're still here.
This is what the world has come to. Assault and Guns Drawn over Pokemon cards. I mean, yes, you gotta catch em' all, but don't assault someone over it!
Mass Extinction Event 2021. Come on, it is time. Dinosaurs had to be more decent than this.
For those who aren't bothered to click on the linked article, the man who pulled a gun was a valid concealed carry permit holder; one has to pass a background check among other procedures to get one, though this process varies by state. He was attacked by four other men and pulled the gun in self-defense. Thankfully, no shots were fired. The linked resource also didn't specify what sort of cards the altercation was allegedly over outside of "sports cards". Apparently, Pokemon cards aren't the only hot ticket trading card items right now....It's a shame people have to fight, stalk, and steal for them.
@Tyranexx Exactly this. People are using this as an excuse to bash Americans but sorry, the guy was attacked and he did everything right. The fact that he chose not to fire rounds speaks volumes of his self control. Those attackers will think twice the next time they want to be so stupid.
@marnelljm We’re kinda going down that route tho. The economic inequality gap seems to get bigger and bigger every day. The rich get richer and poor become poorer. We hardly manufacture anything anymore and our education is not the best. We’re believing conspiracy theories instead of believing in science. We’re falling behind real quick.
@BloodNinja I wanted to set out the facts; I've learned over the past few years to take a second look at a news piece that stirs up emotions. The last thing the internet needs is yet another story getting skewed one way or another because some didn't bother to do their research. It's like a sick game of Telephone.
@Tyranexx I agree. Headlines tend to be clickbaity. Read first before anything. I’ve learned to do that recently. They’ll do anything to grab your attention. Someone people only read headlines and get riled up for nothing.
@Thelastjedi2007 in my defense he loudly proclaimed he had a Squirtle. I never had a Squirtle card! He was asking for it.
Hey guys, I'm wondering if my rayquaza ex is legal in a pokemon battle(my Keldeo ex too)
Those cards are from the battle arena deck
@CheekyZelda @BrintaPap please refrain from arguing about the merits of an entire country. This article is about Pokemon trading cards, so stay on topic.
@Tyranexx Indeed, only when people play, they change the message instead of passing on the facts.
@Tendogamerxxx Pretty much. Headlines are designed to grab someone's attention and tend to be concise. While this isn't necessarily a bad practice, it is often used by some sites - usually the less professional, though I've seen more popular blog-like sites use them - to present an inaccurate picture of the article's overall contents. Due to the glut of info at our fingertips, so many are used to scrolling past and taking the headline at face value. I've also learned to suspect articles with words such as "May", "Can", etc. and try to keep opinion pieces to a minimum, depending on the topic.
(This isn't a jab at how NintendoLife handles headlines by the way, just a general observation)
@BloodNinja All too true, unfortunately.
@WallyWest The article linked says it was over sports cards, not pokemon cards.
But still...
Wow what a country i live in -_-
@TheKillerTofu You sound like someone that doesn't have a clue about what they're talking about. It's very sad that the man was attacked, especially over something that is so trivial and should be bringing joy to people, especially kids. I'm glad he was able to defend himself, too. As others above have pointed out, in other countries he may not have been able to do so easily.
This changes almost nothing for regular consumers. I haven't been able to find Pokemon cards in stock in a regular store since August last year.
But none of this was a problem for the previous 20 years!
Scalpers are human trash and should be ashamed of themselves. They are no better than stalkers and thugs.
@meijin3 Yeah more guns and more violence thats the sollution for sure. Hows that working out for you?
@TheKillerTofu The violence started prior to and ended when the guy pulled his gun out in self-defense.
Even if we remove Pokemon from the mix "ha ha for kids etc etc" and talk only about the sports cards. Uhm...since when did trading cards become the new Air Jordans, and....why? I thought it was that thing that sits on a shelf and nobody actually even looks at. The whole scenario seems bizarre.
@Ryu_Niiyama I used to think the dinosaurs went extinct due to a meteor. I become ever more certain they were actually all just hunted to extinction by humans.
@BrintaPap
In your country the guy would have been curbstomped and robbed. He was able to defend himself because of the gun.
