While it's rather disappointing that we're unlikely to get a port of the original Monster Hunter Stories on Switch, even though there's a smart device version that would potentially make porting easier, the likelihood is that sequel Monster Hunter Stories 2: Wings of Ruin should be equally fun for newcomers or veterans. Though throwback references are inevitable, the story that's being laid out suggest it'll be a solid standalone adventure.
Some of the title's gameplay featured in April's Monster Hunter Digital Event, and now Capcom has unleashed a rather nice story trailer to set the scene. As always the art style looks fantastic, and though these videos inevitably lean on PC footage we're pretty confident it'll still be a looker on Switch.
The story overview introduces some main characters, including the extremely cute Rathalos that is fated to bring ruin to the world; it's still adorable though.
It arrives on 9th July so isn't too far away; are you excited about Monster Hunter Stories 2: Wings of Ruin?

Can't wait to get me a cute lil' Khezu and wreak electrical havoc upon my foes!
Still awaiting to pre order this! Not sure when it’s going live?
I need this game NOW
No gameplay again. The game looks impressive, but I don't want to know anything else about the story. I want to see more the game itself, the landscapes, the towns, the combat, the level of customization, etc.
They don't need much to sell it to me lol, but I still have to see a little more. It comes out the same day as Ys IX and I have to decide between the two XD
@Lord it already did in the US
@the_beaver There's a Monster Hunter Digital Event next week covering both MH Rise 3.0 and MH Stories 2, gameplay may appear there.
@the_beaver There was already a trailer that showed that. It pretty much expanded from the first game, which was already fantastic.
Video: https://youtu.be/GfdYcMxhkhc
It doesn't show everything that you want, but it does show gameplay, graphics, backgrounds, etc and it adds more customization to the first one, which already had tons of options.
Already so in love with this series.
@roy130390 Wow, I didn't see that video! Thank you, now I'm definitely looking forward to it haha
Love this game man, the first told me about alot of the monster's as I wasn't to into the games back then.
this looks so cool. Capcom is really showing the love for the switch.more 3rd parties should be doing this.
Yeah looking forward to this game. Currently play DQ XI, hoping this would another long JRPG.
I'd love to take a peak at the marketing expense report for this game and Rise. With all the 'digital events', trailers and endless interviews of the game(s) is anybody feel over saturated at all? I mean what else could not be revealed by this point?
@Ganner Just don't watch the videos, that's what I do for games and movies. They're hard to avoid sometimes but you still have to press play etc. Just don't!
Yeah, we need actual gameplay footage at this point.
The cutscenes are beautiful, and I'm sold on the story, but, at the end of the day, I'm interested in this as a game, not as an animated movie.
@the_beaver @Ralizah iirc the last digital event had plenty of hints of the gameplay such as giving glimpse of how not only you continue to fight alongside your monster as partner like in Stories 1
I've finished the first MH Stories a while back and it's a really unique take on the monster collecting RPGs. For one you raise monsters from eggs you find in dens instead of beat-up-and-capture.
But more unique are the battles themselves where not only does your avathar take an active part using weapons/etc to fight alongside their own monster, but the monsters themselves fight with AI-decided action.
The crux of the game is you can give monsters orders, but to do that you need to use the game's equivalent to MP known as "Kinship" which is only earned through cooperating with your monster's AI and knowing about it's tendency in terms of moves it'll use in battles so you can coordonate stuff like double attacks/etc against the same targets for bonus kinship gains amongst other actions you can get. It's very unique because extremely few monster collecting games in the past would introduce such concept as giving your monsters their own agency and making "earning their trust"/"synching with them" literally a battle mechanic.
Similarly one new thing that was showcased quick in the last Capcom digital even in April was showing that throughout the story you'll eventually get human companions who'll not only fight alongside you but sometime bring their own monster to the fight for total battle party sizes of 3-4 characters in the fight(note that you can have multiple monsters and switch in the midst of battle so you can bring a monster with a tech/speed/power tendency that is a better match to enemy monster/opponents' own battle tendency in the game's rock-paper-scissor system to attack types).
Honestly it's looking really promising and super unique in term of game design in ways I've only seen in the original Stories game still.
I'm guessing amiibo pre orders will go live after the digital event next week.
The game looks pretty bloody amazing to be honest.
Looks to be way better than the first one, can't wait to get it later this Summer. Eventually Monster Hunter Rise may lose its place soon.
@Radbot42 yes just not in the uk yet.
I'm still trying to decide between grabbing this or Ys IX since they both release during the same week. July is gonna be a great time for games. Budgets? Not so much. XD
@Ralizah Here's gameplay footage: https://youtu.be/GfdYcMxhkhc
It's pretty much like the first game but with more weapon and armor options as well as co-op battles.
@Tyranexx Dunno how it is outside of the U.S., but NISA does small-ish print runs of the Ys games in the States, so it can be significantly harder to find physical copies of these games a few months after launch.
@roy130390 We'll see. Still almost nothing in the way of exploration, town navigation, possible changes to how quests are managed, new gameplay mechanics outside of battle, etc. in the footage revealed so far. Really hoping we learn a good deal more in this upcoming Direct.
@OldMcGroin You're absolutely right. I mentioned in previous articles a month or so before Rise released that I had to take a massive step back. I over saturated myself with anything of Rise that I noticed my original hype from the time of the first trailer was pretty much all gone. It bummed me out a lot. It wasn't just what Capcom kept putting out too. I would eat up all the endless videos on YouTube of some game channels in addition. Seriously some of them milk and milk so many 5-25 minute videos weekly going over and over things from trailers and interviews. About more than a month before release I deleted the demo and shut out all of that marketing/YouTube channels to rebuild back some of the excitement I lost.
@Ralizah That's an excellent point I'm factoring into my considerations. I am in the US. I picked up Ys VIII in late 2019 off Amazon and was lucky to find a new UK copy at just over MSRP (This includes shipping); it was more reasonable than trying to net a NA copy even used. I imagine it's even worse now.
I rarely preorder games, but I might make an exception for Ys IX. The nice thing about most of Capcom's offerings, outside of special editions, is that most of their games stay on shelves for some time.
The narrator almost put me to sleep...
If this game turns out to be successful enough for Capcom to consider a sequel, I really hope they'd adapt Divinity: Original Sin's character movement/positioning and style a new rock-paper-scissors mechanic to work with it.
