It's a new month and that means a bunch of brand new games are en route to Switch. With this in mind, Granzella and NIS America have kicked things off with the local release of the R-Type Final 2 demo, ahead of the game's full launch.
The demo can be downloaded via the Nintendo game page, or by heading on over to the Switch eShop to start the download directly (it'll require around 1.8GB of free space on your system). As noted below, you'll even be able to customise your fighters.
R-Type Final 2 arrives digitally on 30th April and can be pre-ordered now for $39.99 USD. It'll also be available as a physical release and comes with a bunch of extra goodies, which you can find out more about in our previous post.
Will you be checking out the demo of this upcoming release? Leave a comment down below.

Looks a bit... cheap. Still, I'll probably play the demo. A good, new R-Type would be an extremely welcome thing.
Wasn't too impressed with the demo tbh. I backed this on Kickstarter, love R-Type, and I hope the rest is better. Press L to set your ship to the fastest speed possible and then set difficulty to Bydo and its better.
Really happy with how the demo turned out, i'm really confident in the full game now.
hmm yeah it looks at least 10 years old 🤨
Graphically acceptable, customization options are good, difficulty is spot on with the original. However, it is WAY too slow. The first level in the original game flowed, moved quickly, was very dynamic. This demo level was... limping.
I detect lies....hmmmmm
I know it's only a demo but kind of a weak first impression. The graphics are nice enough though, and the ship customizations are a nice touch.
Mixed feelings. Performance and gameplay is overall solid, plus for a boss who has appeared numerous times this iteration was still fresh. Overall though the vision of the game seems more to imitate the pre-existing material instead of a strong identity. And I really hope stage 1 isn’t the strongest stage just to get players in. Otherwise just give us Final 1 on Switch.
The future just switched from being a promise to a threat. The music is pap, the resolution is poor and it’s waaaay too slow. I don’t want bullet hell. I do want to dodge slow moving bullets.
Edit: What really makes me want to punch myself in the face is the immersive intro - immediately followed by a fade to black - before your ship reappears precisely where it was. That is screaming out to be a continuous cut!
Very fun demo with beautiful graphics. Preordered the physical edition.
Yet to play the demo, but Rtype final 1 should come to switch as well. Or Rtype delta:)
Demo was fun. I was surprised how much I loved R-Type Final. Bought it on a lark - was released for $19.99. Final 2 doesn’t give me the same feeling yet - the design feels more like a modern take on R-Type 1-3 with Final’s hangar.
Will still probably snap it up, but I’m tempering my expectations.
@Northwind There is a Japan-only sequel, R-Type Tactics 2: Operation Bitter Chocolate. An intrepid gamer could find a way to play it in English.
I could not wait for the demo to release over here and downloaded it from the Japan eshop and enjoyed the little I played of it.
It's surely a bit hard to go wrong with R-Type. This is on my wishlist so I'll probably try out the demo
I am not thrilled from the demo. Overall, mediocre at best. Graphically, it was a weak showing on the Switch with blurry textures and not the best lighting effects. The frame rate takes a beating in hot situations which feels too reminiscent of R-Type Final on the PS2. And the level was lethargic, limping along with no real excitement.
That intro was just unneeded padding with the "Pick your response" layer for some human sentimentality. I just need the game to drop the ship and get into the fight.
The one bright side is the customization options to make one's ship pop with fun design ideas. That was the most fun I had with the demo.
I will await for full game reviews before investing.
actualy the only shoot em up along with thunderforce 3 worth mentioned.
Not keen on the loading screen every time you die. You die a lot in R-Types.
I finally got around to play to Switch version of the demo, comparing it with the PS4 version and there's something not right. It's using a very odd dynamic resolution that looks better docked than portable, but it's clearly not being run at full 1080p. As @stvnorman mentioned, there's a loading screen each time you die. There is a loading screen on the PS4 version, but the load time is quicker. I just get the impression that they're cheating out on the Switch port compared to the PS4 port. Likely this is coming out on Steam, likely I'll get that version of R-Type Final 2 after checking out the Switch and PS4 demos.
Why is it that Crash 4 is the only port where the devs cared about making it look right on the system!?
Still prefer R-Type to be sprite-based. Also, the game needs to move faster and rock on the soundtrack. R-Type III sucks you right in from the get-go. Also, the load screens are annoying. At least let us see the ship completely blow up!
Just played it on ps5 and I'm very impressed. It looks gorgeous in HDR with great lightning effects compared to the Switch version.
It's a typical first level for R-type but, I hope the rest of it goes in the direction of Delta.
