Original story [Wed 27th Jan, 2021 10:30 GMT]: It's been nearly two decades since R-Type Final first released. Intended as the last main entry for the R-Type series, naturally, that hasn't quite gone to plan.
We've not seen any new entries since 2009's PSP tactics game R-Type Tactics II: Operation Bitter Chocolate, but after a successful Kickstarter campaign two years ago, Granzella's R-Type Final 2 is almost here – it arrives on April 29th in Japan.
This news comes from Weekly Famitsu's latest issue, which also confirmed R-Type Final 2 is getting a physical release. No further details were offered on what that edition contains, though we'll likely discover more closer to launch.
Sadly, there's been no further news on a Western release date, though it should be noted that publishing duties are being handled here by NIS America, rather than Granzella. Previously announced for Spring 2021, a date that still appears on its Steam listing, we're hopeful it's not too far behind.
Are you an R-Type fan? Prefer other Shoot 'em up games instead? Let us know in the comments.

Really looking forward to this! Loving the visuals, too.
This looks awesome, and those visuals are superb.
@johnvboy check out your avatar lol
@Welshland,
You just can't beat Michael Myers, or shoot, run over etc... the list goes on.
Blast off and strike the evil Bydo Empire!
Here’s hoping it’s a fine shooter
Shoulda been titled R-Type Final: Now It’s Final (Unless We Get More Crowdfunding in The Future)
Backed this on Kickstarter and went for the physical edition.
It’s looking very tasty.
Glad it’s getting a physical release in Japan, I wonder if it will be different to the one I’ll get as a backer?
Got my copy preordered. Very excited.
Looks hot, definitely getting the physical version if one is coming stateside. If not will be looking to get one for import.
Can't wait!
It's also great to see a new shmup with actually good current gen graphics and a classic space theme instead of retro graphics and flying girls.
What I've seen on the internet is a price of 40GBP/40USD for the physical edition and $85 for the spangly edition with some sort of May release

Obviously dates might just be wishful thinking
Does not seem to be a Not-Limited Edition. I'd be interested in a physical copy of just the game without the extras.
@KingMike
Appears to be the case :-/
Hope the box artwork is not, er, final either, as it's a bit lacking
Day one on this beauty.
I contributed to the kickstarter on this one.
@AJDarkstar Agreed. I have R-Type Final on PS2 but thanks to Sony’s lack of backwards compatibility it’s stuck there. I’d actually love a trilogy of R-Type Delta and the two Final titles.
glad to see its finally coming out, in japan atleast...hopefully it is worth the wait
This looks pretty dope! Giving me Nanostray vibes. Come to think of it we're overdue for a new Nanostray/Nano Assault from Shinnen!
Did someone say R-Type ?!
This looks great.
Looks like it's going to live up to the moniker of being the 'Gran Turismo' of shmups, the way the first one was described in something I read.
I don't need it physical, but I do need it... But they really should have given it a more interesting name. Final 2 sounds...kind of dumb to be honest.
@Dualmask
Well, it's been working for Final Fantasy for decades now.
Great trailer and announcement. Gets me all fired up.
Time to replay the originals and X-Multiply just to get in the mood.
Ooh I got there before NL did!!
(Ahem...)
looks good. I want a physical copy without all that other stuff as well.I would love to see this happen to axelay. just wishful thinking.
Hopefully the Switch port is solid
I always go back to R-Type Delta and the first Final. Their imagery is just so horrifying that I can't look away. And Delta was somehow rated E!
@Beaucine you're not wrong.
What can I say? Been playing R-Type for nearly 20 years.
NINJA APPROVED
Ugh. Why does this exist? The very name is ludicrous, R-Type Final 2. R-Type Final was a great send-off to the series back in the day, I can see by the amount of overpriced merch they're offering with the game that this is motivated purely by greed. I'd say they should just make a brand new shooter if they want to make one so badly, but it wouldn't sell without the license.
Let the series rest! I'm a huge R-Type fan and always have been, but there's something to be said for letting something go when it's done.
@Beaucine Not so well for Final Fight.
After the third time they decided they had enough for a little while. I think they only came back with two more games after that.
(unless you want to also count whatever other games Capcom decided to put Haggar into as part of Final Fight canon.)
