Smooth McGroove, the long-haired chap who makes intricate acapella video game music covers on YouTube, recently returned to the platform after an almost two-year break for health reasons.
After posting an explanation for his long silence a couple of weeks ago (spoilers: kidney problems and adrenal imbalances that needed fixing), he's back to it already with his first new cover since July 2019: the Overworld Theme from New Super Mario Bros.
Take a break for three minutes and appreciate the soothing melodies and glossy locks of Smooth's nine-person arrangement (plus cat cameo).
As Smooth McGroove would say, "ba ba ba, babababa. Ba! Ba!"

Loved playing this game when I was little. I remember my cousin helping me beat a level in the desert world (I think it was the one where you go across on floating platforms the whole way.) Anyway this is awesome to see, glad to see he's back.
@HotGoomba That sums it up perfectly
Really nice and talented guy, love the cat(s) too.
Amazing baa baaping
Outstanding! Bravo!!!
His videos always make me smile. Thanks!
I often go back and listen to his Ducktales Moon Theme cover.
If that subheading is an Avatar reference, I'm really proud of you guys.
Glad to have Smooth McGroove back. I don't even like this song from NSMB, but he somehow managed to make it really pleasant, lol.
Not gonna lie I'm a little disappointed that he chose this song upon his return since this song to me signifies a downgrade in 2D Mario song quality (specifically mostly due to the baa-ing), it's still nice to see him return and he did make this enjoyable to listen to even with the baa-ing! Though that's probably because it's acapella so the baa-ing fits more.
Either way, good to have him back, and already curious which song is gonna come up next!
The main thing is this guy is feeling well enough to do this again.
I remember listening to Smooth when I was very, very young. Now I'm in college and he's still making incredibly high-quality covers. Glad to see he's finally feeling better and is well enough to perform.
@Yosher But... his music is nothing but baa-ing.
@Yosher Agreed! One of the worst Mario themes ever! Thank god the music picked up again in recent games... would love to hear him do Super Bell Hill.
@Not_Soos Yeah his songs, but not the original. Which is why this song (or most NSMB songs) isn't (aren't) very memorable to me because it feels out of place. But it's very different when it's entirely acapella.
This guy is a legend. I love his street fighter 2 ones. 😊
New Super Mario Bros. was a very innovative and ambitious game at the time it was released, but the sequels were so uninspired and evolved so little, making the first game have a bad impression.
@victordamazio "New Super Mario Bros. was a very innovative and ambitious game at the time it was released"
Multiplayer minigames aside (which were actually really fun) what was innovative or ambitious about it? I don't see it.
When he does Megaman, songs are stuck in my head all day!
New Super Mario Bros was the very first video game I ever played. The levels, the music, the minigames, the Mario vs Luigi mode-all of it is amazing. Too bad younger me lost the game card. I'll get another game card sometime soon.
It's seriously beautiful though. And his facial expressions.
Wonderful to see Smooth return! As usual, another excellent cover. The cat cameos are the icing on the cake for me. ^_^
@Clyde_Radcliffe
Making a new 2D Mario innovative considering how Nintendo ignored it for over a decade and this was during the time period where the industry acted liked 2D was beneath them, that attitude was extremely prevalent during the PS2 era but ended during the time of Wii and 360 due to the massive success of games like NSMBWii and Super Meat Boy. The biggest problem with the NSMB games is that Nintendo refuses to give them the big production treatments they gave the original SMB games so we get plasticy graphics, goofy music and no real attempts at creative level design like SMB3 and instead giving all the “good stuff” so to speak to 3D Mario. This all had a wacky long term effect where some people would 3D Land and World like a 3D NSMB games and ignore them because of that when they’re more earnestly inspired by the original games,
Kate, you are right. Listening to Smooth McGroove is taking a break or like a 3-minute vacation.
Never heard of this guy.
@JayJ now you have.
Guy‘s a legend, great to see him return in all his glory
