Yesterday, VGC published a story suggesting E3 could potentially be locking some elements of this year's digital E3 event behind a paywall.
The plan, according to "multiple publishing sources" was to apparently charge a fee for some of this year's content. This would include demos and a "premium" package with extra access, for around $35 USD.
However, in a follow-up statement from an ESA spokesperson, the organiser confirmed it would not be putting any of the event behind a paywall.
“I can confirm on behalf of the ESA that there will be no elements at E3 2021 that will be behind a paid-for pass or paywall”
ESA also confirmed this in the following tweet:
In VGC's original story, it was suggested one games company expressed criticism of the "paywall plans" and so the ESA backed down on its proposal.
This year's E3 - rebranded as the "Electronic Entertainment Experience" - will run for one week and starts on 13th June. It will feature multiple keynote sessions from games partners, an awards show, preview night and there are plans for on-demand game demos and merchandise stores.

Does that mean they will have Digital E3 demos I would love that!
I know people don't really think E3 matters but the hype around it, and the day were you can just see a bunch of games you hope will come out be shown, Its a amazing time and So far I still love it to this day.
Glad to see it's not EA3
-Huge Animal Crossing update
-New Smash character(s)
-Switch Pro footage
-BotW2 gameplay and release date
-Oracle of Seasons/Ages remake
-New Mario Kart with all Nintendo franchises being included, like Smash on wheels
-New Donkey Kong game
-Silksong release date
-A genuine surprise or two that nobody would guess
That's all I want. I would be happy with even just a third of those being shown at E3. Make me excited about my Switch again.
I’d rather they just cancel E3. Its an outdated model of being an event for the press and industry insiders rather than a event to showcase games to fan creating winners and losers whilst fans only connecting with what is shown by the media. Best thing Ninty did was the Direct to sidestep E3.
Doesn't matter, damage is done. People who have a hate boner for E3 for some reason will still pretend this was a thing and it was just scrapped after the "backlash".
@SpaceboyScreams That's all, huh? ... Do you scream if you actually do receive all of that, or do you scream only if you don't?
@SpaceboyScreams And a PS5 / XBOX Series X emulator on the Switch Pro.
Nintendo will just do it’s direct thing and the world will tune in.
don't need it, let it die
@SpaceboyScreams Here's what we get.
1. A time limited, emulated package of Zelda games worth $60.
2. New wallpapers of Donkey Kong available from My Nintendo to celebrate the 40th anniversary. And this for the sweet price of Platinum coins, which was the precursor to NFT.
3. A please understand about further delays of Metroid and BotW2.
4. Can't think of much else.
Honestly, the disrespect towards Donkey Kong is baffling, when it's pretty much the oldest franchise Nintendo has.
@jump You make valid points but I still like E3.
The majority of gamers don't tune into the daily, or weekly gaming news and E3 is very useful for them. It's still one of the focal points of the gaming year to concentrate on and tune in for.
E3 may not be locked behind a paywall...
...but many of the announced games will be.
I mean it would be kind of stupid to have people pay for it anyways since those presentations are basically ads. Would be contraproductive if they would keep the main public away from new announcements
@SpaceboyScreams "even just a third" oh boy oh boy we are in for some big disapointments... Of course that if that list turns out to be real, I will be freaking happy
Surely nobody is making money in any way from Nintendo’s game announcements...
@SpaceboyScreams I'd assume Nintendo will skip E3 again unless we hear otherwise.
@SpaceboyScreams That's just a list of everything we won't get
Can guarantee atleast two ports though
@link3710 Yeah, the Push Square version of this article makes it seem like publishers are saving the big stuff for outside E3.
https://www.pushsquare.com/news/2021/04/e3_2021s_digital_event_will_be_free_for_all_after_reports_mooted_paywall
So I'd guess Nintendo has a big Direct the week after Skyward Sword HD comes out given how the February Direct was trying to convince fans of BotW to try Skyward Sword HD despite the games being pretty much complete opposites of each other.
I caught wind of this and figured it was an April Fool's Day prank. There's no way they'd paywall E3 content in that way and still keep any integrity.
However, much of the shown content is paywalled later at retailers.
"Don't worry... "
I never was worried. I've always been able to watch all E3-related events online, so I see no reason why that would change, all of a sudden.
I wish the fire emblem released a new game in E3
@SpaceboyScreams It would be disappointing if smash and animal crossing take up slots in the e3 presentation.
@UltimateOtaku91 I think BOTW 2 is at least a but likely given we’ve been promised news this year.
E3 are missing a beat here. They could charge £10 for a 3-day pass via Google Stadia that lets you stream demos of all the biggest titles and play them yourself.
Streaming eliminates downloads and so there is no danger of data miners spoiling titles whilst at the same time raising a lot of money that could be spent on supporting smaller developers who might have lost a lot due to the pandemic.
E3 was dying over the years because of company's complaining and all the "leaking". Covid could mean the definitive end.
It was over for Nintendo anyway. I don't think we even get a E3 Direct, just some loose announcements and maybe a few Directs through the year. Nothing special.
Awesome! So I can ignore E3 for free.
@jump We saw how that turned out last year, horribly, way too many publishers, companies and such made individual streams without any focus, it led to a lot of nothing and disparity, E3 isn't, (And hasn't been for a long time) an event made for media outlets anymore, it is just a week where major publishers put their biggest announcements in video format, and where the world tune to see them most.
@jump E3 never helped sales, again, is just a week of big announcements, it hurts no one and is always something to look forward, technically E3 is not needed, but I'm very glad that it happens.
Also I couldn't care less for what most publishers announce, just hyped at Nintendo, curious at Sony(Now Square I guess), and laughing at Xbox.
Crash Bandicoot will be revealed in June on E3 in Super Smash Bros Ultimate, one of the most iconic characters in history.
@Snatcher I would love for the demos to have their own little menu icon. And for the demos to be playable until the end of time.
@Silly_G Especially EA's games.
Shouldn't it be called EFree?
I’m looking forward to possibly hearing about Starfield. I’ve heavily tempered my expectations though.
