Since arriving in 2007, Professor Layton's had quite a successful history. From humble beginnings in a Curious Village to Ace Attorney crossovers, it's been a few years since a new entry in this puzzle-adventure series has appeared, but that hasn't stopped Level-5 CEO and Professor Layton producer Akihiro Hino reminiscing about it.
Speaking recently with Yahoo Japan (translation credit to Nintendo Everything), Hino talked about Level-5's early beginnings. When asked about comparisons to book series Atama no Taisou, he shed some light on his initial inspirations for Professor Layton.
I always enjoyed the ‘Atama no Taisou’ and because those sorts of brain training exercises were popular at the time, I decided to make something that would incorporate similar puzzles. The series would be a trilogy called Layton that followed a story with characters like Sherlock Holmes and his buddy Watson. Those things were in my mind from early on.
As part of this interview, he also detailed Level-5's initial efforts in self-publishing, singling out Layton specifically. Advising "there was a lot of risk involved" whilst trying to keep staff morale high, Hino clarified how crucial advertising was to the first game's success:
It was standard to spend about 300 million yen on advertising at the time, but initially our budget for Layton was around 150 million yen. It was almost nothing by comparison. The game took off despite that thanks to our longer-term advertising investments. It cost us around 700 million yen in the end, but the thing I took away from it all was that the game would not sell unless it was known to the public. It was naïve of me to think that everyone would buy it solely because we made an interesting game.
Looking back now, it's clear they made the right call. Selling over 18 million copies worldwide, Professor Layton is easily Level-5's most successful franchise, undoubtedly helped by Nintendo's Western publishing efforts. Despite recent setbacks with Level-5's North American branch, we remain hopeful that we've not seen the last of the Layton family.

I need to track these down and play them. I remember enjoying the parts I did play from the Ace Attorney crossover. I'm just unsure if we will ever see another after Katrielle.
Still haven't played the one on switch but this article has tempted me to buy it, actually I'm just going to buy it
On a side note where is my Yo-kai-watch 4 and fantasy life 2 (or remake)
Level-5 seem like they've fallen far since Dragon Quest VIII/IX, Early Layton games etc with the sharp decline of Yo-Kai Watch and the Inazuma Eleven game trapped in dev. Really hope they find a way to come back swinging - maybe Yo-Kai Watch 4 will finally be the kick the series needs in the West? (if it ever comes out here)
Come on... Layton is one of gaming’s finest franchises. We need another game in the series, solely to gain back some interest for Layton to join Smash like in the WiiU days.
I saw the thumbnail, and got super-excited because I thought the Layton games were finally coming to Switch...Now I’m sad. 😭 Such a pity that it doesn’t look like it’s going to happen - they are one of my favourite gaming series of all time!
Yokai Watch 4 is one of the best selling Switch games in Japan. Please localise it.
For just a moment, I read "Professor Layton and the Risks of Self-Publishing" as the title for a new game 🤣
@UltimateOtaku91 I still liked it overall, but Katrielle and the Millionaires' Conspiracy has the worst puzzles in the series. The author of the Atama no Taisou series also did the puzzles for Layton, but he sadly died after the sixth game.
Please give us another, I dont even mind if its Professor Layton pays his taxes or something, they could make it interesting
Professor Layton is easily one of my favorite franchises. Gosh, the Ace Attorney cross-over was sooo good!
I understand Level-5 is going under some difficulties, and the Layton series was pretty much done with 2 trilogies, and the new episode not selling as expected, but I would buy a new Layton game in a heartbeat
One of my most beloved franchises. I've bought every single game, and even for multiple platforms.
I hope we'll see another entry on this series, because I know I'll pre-order it ASAP.
Professor Layton and the Risks of Self-Publishing is an interesting title for the long-awaited sequel.
@tankymctankus right!? They did announce YW4 for the West, but then we never heard from it again. Would be great if Nintendo could handle the publishing of it. 2 and 3 on the 3DS were great!
I just want a Yo-kai Watch 4 localization ;-;
hopefully they outsource it to someone
@DiamondJim i love yw, but it definitely is not one of the best selling switch games in japan
The problem with Level-5 is that they oversaturate the market with an IP once successful. I played almost all the Layton games and enjoyed them but it became too much to follow and the gameplay didn't change enough from game to game.
I like how transparent Hino is about this kind of stuff.
I wonder if Level 5 feels comfortable moving on with series after the passing of Akira Tago. Tago had greatly inspired the series and worked on the puzzles with his team.
I got too excited, I thought hershel Layton was finally on switch
@MS7000 The initial trilogy was recently ported to mobile devices! It translates greatly and is a good way to show support for the franchise, at about $10 per game
@MS7000 I did the exact opposite - was a Layton fan first, then got into Ace Attorney after playing the crossover.
what an interesting title for a next layton game
I legit would play Professor Layton and the Risks of Self-Publishing, but I'd need to know more about the premise. What is he self-publishing? A memoir? How to be a gentleman? How to leave no puzzle unsolved?
I've played through the original trilogy and really enjoyed it! I'm working on collecting the prequel trilogy (Still looking for Azran Legacy at a decent price) but haven't played any of them yet. I would also like to pick up the Switch release of Katrielle and the Millionaires' Conspiracy.
@UltimateOtaku91 Sadly, it seems like Yokai Watch 4 isn't getting localized. It got announced a while back.. but I feel like it probably got shadow canceled.
Too bad we'll never get another one...
