Update [9th Mar 2021]: Last December, a trademark for the Final Fantasy Chocobo spin-off surfaced online. Now, according to Gematsu, Square Enix has filed trademarks for "Chocobo GP" on 26th February in Australia and Canada. Another trademark for it appeared in Europe at the start of this month.
Original story [15th Dec 2020]: During the Nintendo 64 era, kart racing games were in their prime. Mario Kart 64 was followed by Diddy Kong Racing and Mickey's Speedway USA, and over on other platforms, like the PlayStation, there was Crash Team Racing.
One other lesser-known kart racer was Square's 1999 release Chocobo Racing - a game based on the Final Fantasy spin-off series, Chocobo. While it was limited to the original PlayStation back then, there's now seemingly a chance of it returning in some way or form on modern platforms, after a trademark was filed by Square Enix in Japan at the start of this month.
According to Gematsu, "Chocobo GP" was trademarked in English, and "Chocobo Grand Prix" was trademarked in Japanese.
If you're wondering at this point what the chances even are of a possible remake, re-release or follow-up making its way across to Nintendo's platform, the hybrid system is probably in with a shot, if a game like this is announced.
While Square Enix still has a few exclusive deals with Sony when it comes to the Final Fantasy series, the majority of past mainline entries are now available on the Switch and various other platforms. Then there are spin-off titles such as the GameCube exclusive Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles, which was recently remastered for PlayStation 4, Switch and mobile.
And let's not forget Final Fantasy VII's Sephiroth - who was just revealed as the latest DLC fighter for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. Fingers crossed this trademark news is something to do with Square's classic racing game. Would you like to see the return of this Final Fantasy offshoot? Comment down below.

No need for MK9 then
I will sacrifice my firstborn for a new Chocobo Racing
There was a cancelled Chocobo Racing game for the 3DS. Wonder how much of this is inspired by that.
Ah, yes another "a company registered a trademark so they're coming out with a game!" hype bait article 🙄
@Jakiboy Ah cmon. Just for the throwback gameplay vid alone it was worth it.
I already have Chocobo Racing PS1 Japan last 4 December 2020. 😀
Nostalgia Hype level 999.
Please don't be a phone game if true.
It is probably a phone game imo
Is this just... a Mario Kart clone? Sorry if I don’t see anything special, because I really don’t. Can someone explain the love it gets?
@Tommy-and-Timmy It's Final Fantasy. Huge fanbase.
@sanderev
That explains it I guess. Not a big fan of the series but have big plans for next year. Never played a FF game before. Playing FF7 now. Great game.
Kids these days:
Look at that pop-in! Unplayable...
Didn't even know this existed. Looks cute! And the music is always charming.
The chocobo racing in FF7 was awesome, especially combined with the breeding and the KOTR pay off.
But, that's because it was all optional/side quest content adding more depth to an already great game. On it's own, as a standalone title... I'm not sure I'm down for that.
@Tommy-and-Timmy Actually the Chocobo Racing games were never special, but you know...Final Fantasy and Chocobo are a big deal
I never got the chance to play the original. Consider me interested, though I still have to buy MK8 first.
Oh, come on already Squeenix, where's Final Fantasy 1 - 6. This will still probably be fun, and I'll still probably buy it, assuming that this means something, but the stalling on those games is starting to get really annoying.
DAY...1...PURCHASE!!!
This was my favorite kart racer of that Gen... though, admittedly I didn’t play much of Diddy Kong Racing.
Out of the way Mario kart 9, let me run around the racetrack as a chocobo, why did google want to make it chocoholic.
I would seriously love it. Chocobo Racing was unbalanced and janky as hell, but it holds a special place in my heart, especially with all of its unlockable characters. Aya Brea? An 8-bit airship? A Cactuar? JACK FROM 3D WORLDRUNNER? So, so amazing.
Whatever i don't mind if its a mobile game. Still hoping for a PS VII remake port
