Don't forget to update your Nintendo Switch Online SNES and NES apps today, because they're getting updated with four (count 'em) new games.
As we reported a while back, Doomsday Warrior, Prehistorik Man and Psycho Dream are the new SNES games, while Fire 'n Ice (AKA Solomon's Key 2) is the sole NES offering.
Super NES
Psycho Dream – When Sayaka doesn’t return to reality after entering an immersive virtual world known as a D-Movie, the protagonists, Ryo and Maria, must progress through a terrifying fantasy game called Legend of the Fallen Capital to rescue her and bring her back to reality.
DOOMSDAY WARRIOR – It’s the Doomsday Warrior versus the Doom Squad! This action game features an evil sorcerer who has recruited seven warriors to take over Earth. But one of the Doom Squad has resisted the influence and now stands against the rest as the Doomsday Warrior!
Read our Doomsday Warrior review.
Prehistorik Man – Sam the caveman’s quest to save his village begins! Sam lives in a village whose food is stolen by dinosaurs. To get more, Sam must collect bones, which he can then use to buy food. On his way, he’ll need to make use of a variety of weapons, vehicles and attacks, including shouting, to attack all on-screen foes. Can Sam reach the dinosaur graveyard and collect enough bones?
Read our Prehistorik Man review.
NES
Fire ’n Ice – As Dana, you have been chosen by the Queen of the Winter Fairies to bear the power of ice magic. With it, you must defend your home, Coolmint Island, from the wicked wizard Druidle and his flames!
If you've also got a Japanese account, you can enjoy Shin Megami Tensei II, as well.
We'll be reviewing the four western additions to the growing Nintendo Switch Online service today, so keep checking back.

Still waiting for Actraiser and Legend of the Mystical Ninja
The Fire 'n Ice game looks cool/hot.
Dear Nintendo, please make Arms free for NSO subscribers. Arms is a great game, especially in online-play, but too small for a full-price title. This move would push NSO with very small efforts and almost no reduction of sales numbers for Nintendo.
@Paulo Actraiser would be nice...who knows what's going on regarding licensing for that game, what with it being Enix before they joined with Square. It was one of the first SNES games I played and I loved it. Soul Blazer was another one.
Not in a rush to try these! The slow drip feed is hardly exciting with this selection.
i‘m waiting for „true lies“. but there is no chance that this will be released for nintendo switch online right?
@Paulo downloaded Legend of mystic ninja last night on my snes mini. Never played it before but heard it was pretty good.
Yes yes well done.
Let’s have some new AAA on the direct tonight please Nintendo.
4 free games that I've never played or heard of before? Don't mind if I do! (To the naysayers, yes I consider them free, as I paid my NSO fee to continue with online access to existing services. These specific titles are a bonus which I did not anticipate when paying my fee)
I still say to at least check out Prehistorik Man if nothing else, it's a decently fun platformer!
Looking forward to Nintendo announcing Prehistorik Man as the next Smash Ultimate fighter in the Direct.
Just going to say that Psycho Dream looks like my kind of obscure.
@Rohanrocks88 I see it as good value for money. Regular access to loads of retro games for a significantly lower price than competitors. I have plus (don't have an Xbox) and in the 6 or 7 years I've had it have only completed maybe half a dozen of the free games that came with it, as I already owned a lot of the ones they provided when they added them, so I'm basically paying £50 per year to be able to play a few games online. Value is subjective, but I think NSO for 17.99 is great value for money. If you don't (and I know many don't) just don't subscribe. I could understand the frustration if you only wanted to play Splatoon 2 online and had no interest in any of the other features/benefits.
@Max_the_German its a nice idea. But it will angry people who actually buyed it.
Arms 2 or Splatoon 3 would be a great.
Shameful bunch
Cool and all but I'd love to see gameboy games get added to the nso service
this is not a worthwhile feature at all.
just a bunch of shovelware.
I never see anyone wanting ‘Zombies Ate My Neighbors’ would be stoked for that one
@JohnnyC,
Even better deal for the family membership, but at most this is working out at £1.49 per month, people must be cheap to see that as poor value.
@WolfyTn,
Would love it, awesome title.
all I need is super dodgeball, as that’s the only game when I’ll play with my dad.
Which is there.
@Rohanrocks88 if you split a family subscription, you can get a year of NSO for less than £4.
I love Gameboy and/or Gameboy advance added to Nintendo Online
Pretty much a dead service, only Earthbound left to complete the list of possible, relevant games. As long as Final Fantasy, Mana, Mega Man, Contra and Castlevania series are being sold separately, there's no chance they'll hit the app. This is why we miss Virtual Console.
@TheFullAndy i hate how hard I laughed at that
@rushiosan i’m holding out hope for some Konami classics for SNES like Gradius III and Zombies Ate My Neighbors
@Sunsy agreed - I saw the preview on the NSO trailer and was like “ok, I probably would have loved this as a kid”
@JohnnyC At the end of the day, you pretty much are paying for these games, though. Nintendo has no business charging you for their online services that had been free for a decade before.
Plus, the games that NSO currently offers are a vastly inferior offering versus any Nintendo system with Virtual Console.
I don't know what to say other then we're all being a bit ripped off. Hopefully they'll announce an expansion of games to N64 in the Direct today, but even with that, the NSO catalog would still be far behind the Wii U's Virtual Console.
Some of these games actually look fun to play. Will check them out. Really hoping for some good news tonight about new systems being added to NSO. Badly needed at this point. Switch is almost four years old.
@Harmonie Wii U VC was great and a big reason why mine is still connected. You say they have no business charging us, but that's the point, it's a business and it's their service and they can charge what they want. Nintendo only cares about us as far as getting us to open our wallets is concerned. The idea that we should be loyal to a company or that a company should be loyal to the consumer has always been one of the biggest delusions in capitalist societies. It boils down to whether they're providing what you want and whether you're willing to pay what they ask. For this from my personal perspective, I feel it's good value and apparently enough other people do for Nintendo to continue with this model. When they wanted £50 for Animal Crossing Amiibo Festival or some of their many other relatively weak releases, I and most other people sent them a fairly loud and clear **** off in the only way that matters to them - no sales.
@johnvboy Agreed. Spend more on McDonald's and don't enjoy it as long.
No idea how anyone managed to get Doomsday Warriors to be put onto the service...
Waiting for Test Drive 2...
@Kidfunkadelic83 Legend of the Mystical Ninja is on the Super Famicom Mini. The series is Goemon. There are instsllments on the NES, GB, GBA, SNES and N64. The first game that came to the west was precisely Legend of the Mystical Ninja for the SNES, though its sequels did not, unfortunately. Then in the late 90s the series reappeared as Mystical Ninja featuring Goemon with 1 game for the GB and 2 for the N64. Did not enjoy the GB one, and the second for the N64 is excellent. Haven't played all the instsllments and the first SNES title is my favorite.
@Meehanuk yes, though It should have released now or last month, since It was the game's 30th anniversary and we got an excellent soundtrack release.
@GannonBanned Yeah, gave it a try this morning, so far I like it. Just always have this soft spot for games that are obscure. In a "I never heard of this, I want to try it" kind of way.
@JohnnyC They aren't free because if you had not paid for NSO, you wouldn't have access to them.
From the massive library for both NES and SNES, this is what they choose?
My expectations for the Direct today is already waning
@Crono1973 As I said, it's about perspective. I paid a fee for something, and this has been added on top of it. It's like one time years ago I went to the cinema to see a Disney film and got a free dvd of a Narnia film at the end. Technically the dvd wasn't free as I wouldn't have got the dvd if I hadn't bought the cinema ticket, but I got what I paid for and the dvd was a welcome extra that I didn't need to pay extra for. Depends how you see it, but in simple terms it's extra value without any additional cost or inconvenience to the person who's already paid their money.
@Sunsy me too with the caveat that often I’m quick to discover why they’re obscure within 10-15 minutes
@Zequio Then there will be angry people, so what? Nobody will have a real disadvantage.
So...nothing of any note then
If they want my attention, they need to port Mario Karts from gamecube & wii.
Yummy garbage give me more! 💩 🗑
Don't you just love free garbage?
For all the angry people posting here (which is sort of redundant considering no one appears to be happy when they post on NL)... Fire and Ice is the third game in the Solomon's Key series which is excellent and generally beloved by many people who like action puzzle games (it's near the same tier as the DK94). This is a good inclusion.
I sure hope Nintendo Announces N64 and GameCube Games for Nintendo Switch Online! I Love The NES and SNES Masterpieces, but I can't wait to play N64 and GameCube Masterpieces on my Nintendo Switch!
Prehistorik Man is not garbage guys, it's a hidden gem almost as good as Ristar and Sonic 3 and Knuckles.
@invictus4000 far from garbage. Ea, 2k, and Sony has plenty of that though.
I'm looking forward to trying both Psycho Dream and Prehistorik Man at some point through out the week.
@Muddy_4_Ever what was it Reggie said? "If it's not fun, what's the point?" There is very little fun in here...
Four times luke warm tap water again, thanks, Nintendo!
Jesus, scrapping the bottom of the barrel this time. Such an amazing back catalog and we get whatever this is.
@WiltonRoots,
You think this is fun, just wait until after this latest direct, I already have my bingo card.
https://i.redd.it/crp9ga1gquh61.png
@johnvboy I might try that, feel free to use mine:
https://i.ibb.co/TP8Lp03/Nintendolife-bingo.jpg
and in three months, nintendo will be ever so generous to give us : Pit Fighter, Lester the Unlikely, and Radical Rex for the SNES, and Donkey Kong Jr Math SP edition on the NES
@rushiosan You mean the Virtual Console where we had to pay 5 a pop for NES games and 8 a pop for SNES games?
@vio Still a better deal than 1 decent game every 2-3 months for $20 a year.
@WiltonRoots,
Your Bingo card is much better.
And it is 2021 !!!!!
First time there hasn't been at least one game in the batch not worth getting excited for. Unless Fire 'n Ice is as good as some suggest...
i' would love Konami classics like tiny toon adventures and turtles in time I haven't played either for like forever.
@bones licensed games won’t be coming to the service
Its never going to happen but I would love to see:
Act Raiser
Soul Blazer
Illusion of Gaia
Terranigma
Earthbound
Earthbound Beginnings
I can see why Square Enix would hesitate to put these games on the service, they make more money with selling applications to Nintendo, Apple, Steam, Xbox, PlayStation, etc etc.
Nintendo should at least bundle Earthbound Beginnings, Earthbound, and Mother 3.
Oh, and I'd love to see games like Looney Tunes B-ball on the service, but again...copyright issues.
There must be a list somewhere of “worst ever games ever released on a Nintendo system” and they pick a few from that list every time they release something. 🤔
@Kidfunkadelic83 you WHAT???? How can I do that to I would love to add games to my snes mini I did not know that was even possible
@JohnnyC Technically the dvd wasn't free as I wouldn't have got the dvd if I hadn't bought the cinema ticket,
Now you're getting it. Nintendo is offering these retro games ONLY for those who pay for NSO. They aren't free.
I don't play online but I am still paying for it because I pay for NSO for these retro games. Unless things drastically improve though, I won't be renewing this year.
@vio You know what's funny? On Game Pass and PS Now you can subscribe AND/OR buy the games available on the service. Nintendo probably knows that very few of the games on NSO are worth buying for $5 or $8 each and they also likely know that NSO wouldn't have much to offer if people could just buy the good games on NSO.
@Crono1973 I get where you're coming from, but when I pay for something and then get something unexpected extra at no extra cost, most sellers advertise that as free and most buyers gladly accept it as such. That's why ASA has no issue with the use of the word "free" in terms like "Buy One Get One Free."
@JohnnyC So I am getting the games on Game Pass for free because I didn't expect the new games that get added every month?
@Vasilios really? Ive got snes, GB, GBA, NES, MS, Megedrive etc on mine all in folders...
Without going in to the magic way of doing it on here.. Check out youtube. Very easy to do.
@Crono1973 Game Pass and Plus commit to certain things on a monthly basis in exchange for your £50. NSO has made vague promises about improving the proposition with no specifics, hence the irregular periods between new content and the form it takes. Call it what you want, but it's easier to refer to this stuff as free rather than constantly calling it "irregular additional content without the requirement to pay any additional charges to access" which is probably more accurate but doesn't really roll off the tongue as well. I take your point that there are very few things in the world that are completely free with no requirement by the receiver to do anything at all to get them.
@JohnnyC Nintendo not committing to releasing games doesn't mean the retro games are free and it's not easier to call them free than to call them what they really are, games paid for with your NSO subscription.
@Max_the_German its never good to disrespect your users...
@Crono1973 Ok, to each his own. I shall continue to be pleasantly surprised when new stuff is added regardless, and happy that I'm not having to pay anything extra for it. Until Nintendo decides to hike the price up of course (hopefully not!!!)
@WiltonRoots,
I wan't my Bingo card back.
@Kidfunkadelic83 Wow thanks man! I am looking it up now and am really impressed. This is gonna be fun. Thanks so much!
@JohnnyC I shall continue to be pleasantly surprised when new stuff is added regardless, and happy that I'm not having to pay anything extra for it.
So just like when new games are added to Game Pass and PS Now then?
@Muddy_4_Ever I played it a few minutes and you're right. Never got into Solomon's Key but this one had me hooked immediately. Definitely a good game. And you're spot on about all the angry/salty comments.
@Ghost_of_Hasashi Meanwhile on the Wii Homebrew Channel...
Earthbound Beginnings
Super Mario World - Windwaker
Gundam Fed vs. Zeon
and Alien vs. Predator
No subscription fee, no 🗑. All killer no filler
@Vasilios pleasure 👍
@johnvboy I'm waiting for the obligatory "So what did you think of the Direct" poll article they're bound to run...there's been some great fallout already so far.
@WiltonRoots,
To be honest I had my usual feelings after most directs, but Mario Golf was enough for me, but yes the Switch will be doomed after this, in some peoples eyes.
@johnvboy Yeah people get themselves too hyped up which always leads to disappointment, but yeah Mario Golf made me smile...it's long overdue. It might even tear me away from Pure Pool for 5 mins!
@WiltonRoots,
Love pure pool, the snooker simulation is top notch.
@johnvboy I'm hopelessly addicted to perfect potter mode, and I play snooker with my mate who's on PC. Definitely got my money's worth and then some out of that game.
@WiltonRoots,
I think they should add a Harry Potter mode, where you face of against famous members of the books and movies, you could cast spells as people are lining up for their shots...
@Doktor-Mandrake That's what I'm saying !!
@WiltonRoots,
You o.k mate, I was only joking with my previous reply, sometimes that does not come across on the internet.
@johnvboy Lol all good man! I'm easily distracted.
