We may never get Portal on the Switch. The port is a lie, and all that. But we can attempt to recreate at least some of the joy of throwing sentient (?) cubes into lava and overthrowing a megalomaniacal robot lady in Minecraft in the meantime.
Reddit user minoan8128 has been posting their Still Alive note-block music for a few months, but it wasn't until they added a bunch of background gags, references, and secrets that the video really took off. It's currently sitting at almost 20k upvotes, and that's because it's a technical and visual delight.
Minoan8128 informs us that "no Jellies were harmed in the making of this video", referring to the wee cats that can be found sitting around the place, named after Minecraft YouTuber GoodTimesWithScar's cat, Jellie.
We don't want to spoil any of the lovely surprises in the video, so if you're a fan of Portal (and you don't mind watching llamas go through a series of experiments) then it's really worth checking out for yourself. And yes - this was all done in survival. The thought of having to corral that many villagers the old-fashioned way makes us feel a little bit sick.
Have you ever made anything this intricate in Minecraft? Do you think there's a chance Portal will come to Switch some day? Tell us about it in the usual place.

I haven't played this game in over a decade, and yet somehow I have apparently retained every lyric to Still Alive, as evidenced by my ability to sing along with this video.
I know the comments are going to be flooded with yearnings for this game to come out on the Switch, but I'm still going to take this time to redundantly gripe about not having it.
They should make an orange box 2 with portal 1 and 2, half life 1, 2, ep1, ep2, left 4 dead 1 and 2 ans garry’s mod and release it on switch, ps4/5, xbone and XSX.
@darkswabber the idea of an Orange Box-type thing on consoles is an interesting one, especially seeing how Valve said recently the company wanted to start making games again after HL Alyx (can't recall where I saw that though). Nice as it would be, especially for me with a laptop that had noticeable lag in Jackbox, to have these on Switch or other consoles, I can't see it happening based on how much they put into Steam. Or if they did, I can imagine it being very over-priced
@stinky_t the original orange box is on ps3 and 360.
It would be nice to have Portal 1 & 2 on the Switch and it wouldn't be hard at all for them do.
@darkswabber on top of that it's bc on xbox one and series x. It won't die that easy.
@darkswabber My mistake then, I didn't realise that. Gut feelings are it's still super unlikely, but maybe more so than I thought though, cheers
This. Was. Beautiful.
BRAVO!
(and now I'm teary eyed)
When you think about it, is there any reason why valve games on the Switch are impossible? Valve games are on the Xbox One's backwards compatibility, so Valve doesn't have a problem with their classic games being on modern platforms, and Portal Bridge Constructer is on Switch, so Valve doesn't have a problem with their properties showing up on Nintendo platforms. I also doubt that any of the major porting studios would turn down the chance to work with Valve franchises if they were given it, considering how popular most of their games are. Even if Valve just doesn't want any new ports of their games, there's no feasible reason why we couldn't at least get Black Mesa on the Switch.
@Desrever haha same here, as soon as I saw the subheader the song just started playing in my brain instantly
@alexybubble it’s so frustrating, I would pay $60 no question for the Orange Box or HL1 GOTY pack (came with BS and OF) - no clue why Valve doesn’t wanna pick up another $20 million or so.
I assume they don’t think the games aged well or something, which is dumb - Gabe has always loved Nintendo and Shigeru and loves the Switch.
@darkswabber I want the HL1 GOTY pack which came with Blue Shift and Opposing Force
Portal with precise, Splatoon-style aiming would be INCREDIBLE. Given the specs Portal was designed to run on, a Switch port could be put together over a couple weekends. This really is a "we hate money" situation.
Not ashamed to admit that I sang along as the video played.
