Well, it's finally official, EA's battle royale Apex Legends is dropping onto the Nintendo Switch next month.
So. how did Respawn Entertainment actually get this version of the game up and running? Of course, it's called in the Switch port specialist Panic Button to help deliver the "full-featured" Apex Legends experience on Nintendo's hybrid system.
Game director, Chad Grenier, revealed this information in the launch date announcement post on EA's website:
"Porting Apex Legends to its smallest screen yet is a major achievement, and we couldn’t have done it without our friends at Panic Button. We’re very proud of what the team has been able to achieve with some smart optimizations for the Switch port to deliver a full-featured Apex Legends experience on the go."
When the Switch iteration arrives on 9th March, it'll include support for cross-platform play, the game's latest seasonal content, and "full feature parity" with all of the other versions.
And as the game is launching on Switch a few weeks after the Season 8 launch, Switch players will be granted 30 free levels for their Season 8 Battle Pass. If you play on Switch in the first few launch weeks, you can also earn double XP.
Panic Button has previously worked on Switch ports for games like DOOM Eternal and Rocket League.
Will you be dropping into the Switch version of Apex Legends on 9th March? Tell us down below.

Yep. I’ll try it out for free. Looking forward to it.
Remember how Mohammad Alavi (Respawn) literally laughed and cussed at the idea of Titanfall 2 on Switch? Considering that game and Apex runs on the same engine?
The irony, right?
@Zyph An inflated ego with big corporate pockets will do that to a guy.
If anyone can do it, Panic Button can.
Its going to be great.
Yup. Its gonna be a great port.
Although for panic button, this might be easier than DOOM Eternal
@Zyph that guy is an idiot anyway. It was before anyone thought the switch be successful anyway
Activision.... please utilize this team.
OMG why are people so mad about this.
Its good that they are taking their time to port it and thats good. It seems people want another cyberpunk problem again.
Its the fans fault that cyberpunk failed, not the developers but the fans. They are the ones who did death threats towards the developers.
@anoyonmus Cyberpunk 2077 had so many guaranteed sales and preorders, that was it's problem. Their investors will have seen that and demanded that the game released this early.
Death threats aren't great, but I doubt they make a difference. The "fans" still paid for it, and I doubt they expected so many refunds.
Yawn.
I really don't like Battle Royales with cheese.
I'm sure this will be good though seeing as Panic Button seem to work some sort of witchcraft in regards to porting stuff to Switch.
Anyway, glad others are excited.
More games are more games even if I have as much interest in them as licking a used handkerchief.
😜
@Kimyonaakuma it did make a difference.
People need to admit delays happen. If its a good game in the end, it is all worth it.
Hats off to Panic button! All the more reason to check it out!
Yup. Get ready for another impressive port.
Hopefully we could have two options.
1. Quality mode
2. Performance mode.
I would go with quality preferably but performance I might also go as well.
my nephews (yes, I’m old) play this game religiously on the Xbox. I’ll try it out to see what the hype is about
My 14’y o son plays only fortnite, (and among us) because here are his friends.
Is apex legend any better than fortnite ? I’m not trolling, just asking for some user’s backed review ...
I heart Panic Button but I think I’ll be giving this one a hard pass. Does anyone know what other projects Panic Button are working on?
I dont get why people are excited for a 2 year old battle royale game.
I also wonder what the drop off is going to be on Switch when new players go online and get absolutely dominated on crossplay by those who have played since launch - the learning curve is going to be brutal.
It is still nice to see some competitive shooters finally coming to switch, even if they are old F2P ones. I just don't think I'm going to give up the memory space for it.
Now if only they could port Titanfall 2, it was such an amazing single player shooter.
Source engine is probably easier to port over than ID Tech 6/7, depending on what enhancements Respawn put in.
.... now I want to see Portal and Portal 2 on the Switch.
@Mr-Fuggles777
It may be from 2 years ago, but it's far from "old." Loads of people still talk about, and constantly play this game all over the world. It's also a big hit in Asia with loads of Japanese players in particular. It's exciting because many of us haven't played it before, so yeah.
@JR150 I'm pretty sure most people who play shooters have other consoles alongside a Switch and have already played this.
I cant realistically see any gamer being single console the last few gens - they are all great for different things and limiting to one system means you miss out on games like this at release.
@anoyonmus
Some people are mad because EA never considered Panic Button for their other ports, most notably, every FIFA game on the Switch. We also don't have any Sims games and we don't have any PvZ: Garden Warfare games, two non-graphically intensive game series that have no reason to skip the Switch.
Also, I see what you did there, asking for Performance and Quality mode .
My switch online friends have an xbox but not a playstation. I do have a playstation. This meant we could never play Apex together. Ready to jump in with the boys.
I see the infamous porting wizards are back at it again
@anoyonmus
Admittedly, all things should be accepted within limits. Otherwise your argument could defend the actions of star citizen, and honestly, that game is merely a scam.
@NathanTheAsian
Let me just say this again. Frostbite Engine cannot run on the switch at all.
As for Sims and PVZ, I have no idea, its EA their decision
hopefully, Panic Button can do the same thing with Rocket League with having a 60 fps and a 30 fps option.
The moment I saw eShop that was immediate turn off... External Doom was bad enough we need to stop these scams from happening...
@anoyonmus
Which is the harsh reality of EA. Why did they have to make an engine so frustratingly complex when other engines are so versatile and still look and play really nice?
PvZ: GW unfortunately runs on Frostbite as well.
@NathanTheAsian frostbite has been used by EA for so many years.
Also Frostbite was originally used by DICE for Battlefield and then EA decided to just use it for a lot of their games.
Also using Unreal Engine will require EA to pay to Epic games or something like that.
I prefer older EA games over newer ones
(there are exceptions like Apex Legends and Sims 4). The 360 and PS3 had great EA games that I want to see on switch.
I want to see Dead Space 1 remastered, Mass Effect, and Titanfall.
So you can't really blame EA for that
@NathanTheAsian I don't believe a word that Jeff Grubb says.
PVZ Battle for the Neighborville is not coming to switch at all, ok. It uses frostbite which doesn't run on switch and will like s***.
NFS HP remastered was believable and so was the Velan Studios game was already known for a while. But PVZ BFTN is not coming to switch, thats it.
Maybe we will see something else
@SwitchForce isn't apex now on the eshop rn
Now I know this will be a great game! Panic Button does the best third party work on the Switch!
@idork99 from my pov, it's a hero battle royale. Don't know how many champions there are now, but each were distinct enough to not really have a favorite. Guns were varied enough, now I don't know. Pretty fun. I wonder if this one will incorporate motion, and if it'll have crossplay. Hope not on the latter.
@Zyph I would prefer Titanfall 1 over 2 anyway! I prefer the tighter/faster acrobatics, larger maps, and more focused game design. The second one tried too hard to be CoD-like with its kill streaks and other game content.
