In recent years, the hype-rumour-announcement-amazement/disappointment cycle of Nintendo Direct presentations has been almost as important to fans as the games themselves; nothing sparks excitement among Nintendo players quite like a good old Direct tease, and it's great to see a whole community come together during those times to discuss and geek out about our favourite hobby.
But, as we're all painfully aware, we've hit something of a dry patch. Not counting the 'Mini: Partner Showcase' presentations or videos that only focus on a single game or event – such as the recent Super Nintendo World Direct – it's now been more than 500 days since our last 'full fat' Direct. That show arrived on 4th September 2019.
So, will we ever see one of these spectacular showcases ever again? While we've definitely seen an increase in comments pondering the possibility that Directs might be a thing of the past, or at the very least, something we won't see again for a while, a Nintendo of America job listing has offered a glimmer of hope that they're still in the company's thoughts. A new Associate AV Producer role involves the following duty:
"May assist with filming live-action footage for use in Nintendo Directs, and other content marketing initiatives."
So you're telling us there's a chance?
Incidentally, the last time Nintendo publicly commented on its plans for Directs, company president Shuntaro Furukawa said that they're "incredibly effective", but that as times change, so might Nintendo's approach to delivering info to fans.
We're sure they won't be around forever, but don't give up hope on a new 'proper' Direct just yet – even if you think they might be done for.
Thanks to TeamRocket47 for the tip!

Bleh, full-blown Nintendo Directs are the gaming equivalent of Unicorns at this point. I would love a good direct, but I am doubtful for it happening at this point. Hope whoever applies for the role finds good fortune.
I miss the excitement that comes with watching a new fresh Direct. Sigh. Hopefully soon?
Great! I really think the only reason they slowed down on the directs was because covid. Probably easier to control announcements and release on a case by case basis right now if games are being delayed as a result
I think they’ll be back, just seems Nintendo hasn’t had much in the pipeline to show us...
@MS7000 And the games usually announced at them usually are too.
I lost hope of a general Direct this year when Bowser's Fury was a standalone announcement. If Zelda gets the same treatment as Mario we'll likely know pretty much the full 2021 lineup by the end of February via a Zelda Direct and a Pokemon Direct.
What I have found is from a marketing standpoint, directs are a horrible idea. Yes, they are SUPER COOL but...think of it financially. Allll these games announced at one time, nobody remembers half of them by the time it's over. When people only care about the end announcement and smash bros, all the other big titles are cast aside. It's too much for the consumer to handle whether you like it or not. Sadly, single individual announcements are key to giving each game the attention they need for success. The reason why they abandoned directs without telling us is because they saw these statistics and wanted to change, but if they told the public then people would get mad. Let the public keep hoping and lead them on until they realize on their own time to maximize interest. That being said, the backlash may have led to directs having a possible return, but I believe that it is one of two things. 1- Directs will be structured differently to not overwhelm, or 2- They mean directs as in The Mario anniversary direct or nintendo world direct.
@PBandSmelly
Or 3- Just using directs as an example of similar work to take example of
can we please get a direct soon. Also there are news of an apex legends annonouncemt soon.
I think if we don’t see a direct by June for E3 we can safely assume Nintendo are done with them for good.
@frabbit His weekly recaps are mostly just him reading NintendoLife articles, so it's neat to see NintendoLife reporting on his news for a change lol.
Honestly, I'm not gonna get my hopes up in the slightest. If we get one, that's great. But I'm not going to get hyped only for it to all be for naught.
@PBandSmelly What's wrong with a Direct then gradually releasing new, screenshots, videos and information on individual titles to make sure they get the attention they deserve and don't get overshadowed?
NL, you may not have realized it, but Arlo broke this news bit (with help from his source).
He always credits NL for most of his news roundups, so... just saying.
@PBandSmelly I still haven't forgotten about MP4 or Bayonetta 3.
@N8tiveT3ch
It still hurts 😔
The good old days.... when sakurai talked to us live......
Man, a full-fledged Direct would be so crazy! It probably won't happen again or at least be similar to the way they were in the past...
I would call that...vestigial.
Hmm.. I should apply. Lol
@BlubberWhale honestly if Arlo is always just taking articles from NL(no problem with him doing that btw) then NL should be able to take one single story from arlo without a bunch of flak
The super big 40+ minute ones are gone. Until COVID 19 is whatever under control looks like they can’t really promise a game will come out when it comes out. So they have to break it into pieces over the year. So news is better than no news to me.
@RandomGamesAndStuff The difference is he’s giving credit. I mean you’re right on some level, but that’s for them to work out. If no communication happened, a mention is common courtesy.
Edit: Also, it probably would have been alright if NL credited the source and not Arlo, which is kind of what I expected.
Edit 2: Also again, I don’t care that much so you can still be my friend if you disagree for some reason. 😉
I hope we don't get a bunch of mediocre mini directs this year..
I love how the diehard fans are giving Nintendo a pass on not having Directs anymore. I, for one, loved them and miss them. There was something for everyone in each presentation and would get me excited about Switch’s future and give something to look forward to.
Expect a Zelda 35th and Pokémon 25th Anniversary Direct within the next month or two.
No general Directs anytime soon.
Finally took the plunge and made a profile on here to have some input. I'm a longtime follower of both Nintendo and NintendoLife, and I've seen every single Direct since way back in the early-early 3DS days. (Nearly ten years now? Holy cannoli!) It is disheartening that I haven't watched a new full-length general Direct since I started college, but I'll bide my time and hope that Ninty has a few aces up their sleeves...
I don't think nintendo directs are dead, I think that maybe they're waiting until covid blows over before they do another one again. I don't see how they can't just announce games without using live action footage which is probably why they're holding off on directs.
So if Nintendo Directs are gone, then that means Iwata's legacy is slowly diminishing as well? You might as well just cease to exist, Nintendo. Come on! Continue Directs
I’m worried less about the directs not happening and more about what it means that they aren’t happening. Meaning that if Nintendo had a lot to show they would have a direct so I guess they just don’t have a lot to show?
I was hoping we would be seeing more releases from Nintendo since they are focused on just the one system but I’m not sure if that’s the case. Maybe they are holding done releases back for when they finish going through the Wii U catalog but I doubt it. I didn’t have a Wii U so maybe I can’t appreciate the frequency of first party titles in comparison (excluding Wii U titles of course). It just seems like they are in a bit if a slump right now.
I reckon we will see a full direct (maybe slightly shorter than normal but still) around Mid-Summer. I'm guessing a Zelda 35 direct this month, with a trailer for BotW 2. We will see another in summer and then a release in winter this year. I think Silksong will release in mid summer too.
@PBandSmelly Perhaps one way of doing them is to do 5 or so Mini directs over the course of a week? Like one on Monday, all the way to Friday With one big announcement each time and a few little ones with it.
