Update 2 [Sat 2nd Jan, 2021 04:45 GMT]: The anticipated issue of Edge spotlighting Hollow Knight: Silksong is now available.
A post over on ResetEra has shared some of the highlights. Unfortunately, there's still no release date, so keep an eye out for that in the future. There are some other interesting details in there, though.
- Team Cherry's next game will not be Hollow Knight related
- Team Cherry like Castlevania Lords of Shadow!
- Hornet will have the ability to perform tasks for NPC's, keep track of tasks you've completed through noticeboards around Pharloom.
- Not replacing organic quest lines from the first Hollow Knight.
- Instead of rescuing Grub's from jars, now you rescue fleas, that get themselves into little scraps.
- Hornet's Crests are fully customisable, can be easily changed to reflect your play style.
- Trying to create a game that's accessible to new players, but also matches the difficulty of the original game.
- 'Tricks' such as Sting Shards, Pimpillo Bombs, straight pins, can be crafted at benches from shards gathered from defeated enemies.
- The objective of the game is to climb to the Citadel, but there will be 'many other lands'
- Hollow Knight composer Christopher Larkin returns
- Start off the game having lost many of your powers
- PC and Switch only at launch, release date TBA.
Team Cherry also noted how Hornet is generally more acrobatic (via GamesRadar):
"Hornet can travel so much faster, she can jump higher, she can mantle or clamber onto ledges, she’s generally more acrobatic. So the caves around her have to expand to accommodate her height.”
And the enemies in the new entry are more sophisticated than the ones in Hollow Knight, too:
"The characters in this game, they’re kind of one step beyond that, where it doesn’t quite feel right for them to be that simple. Like, they have to have surprising ways of chasing you, keeping up with you, or evading your attacks.”
Update [Thu 24th Dec, 2020]: The prediction was correct!
Original Story [Mon 14th Dec, 2020 04:15 GMT]: The Edge Online Twitter account recently shared a tweet about its magazine's next issue (out 31st December) and it has sent Hollow Knight fans into an absolute frenzy.
As you can see in the reply tweet below - the image on display is believed to be a close-up shot of Hornet. This character, in case you didn't know, is the star of the upcoming Hollow Knight sequel, Hollow Knight: Silksong.
Edge editor Jen Simpkins added to this, telling her followers to "Git... hype" for this "world exclusive" - which as fans of Hollow Knight have noted, is an interesting choice of words. She's also responded to a number of tweets referencing Hornet and Hollow Knight, and even told some followers they are "quite close".
The last time Team Cherry provided an update on Silksong was earlier this year when it said the game would launch when it was ready. Do you think the Hollow Knight fans are onto something? Tell us below.

Its about time we get some news about this game, just need to finish the first hollow knight.
If it is silksong.... ima die! I love this gane and cant wait for more Hollow Knight!
Git hype? Man, can’t wait for VCS Simulator 2021! Choose from several servers, including GitHub, GitLab and SourceForge! Live the existential pain of merge conflicts from the comfort of your own home! All this and more can be yours for only £49.99!
I hope it's Silksong news. Hollow Knight is one of my favorite games ever, so I need a sequel!
I suck at Hollow Knight, but I'm still excited to suck even harder in Silksong!
oh no that sounds suggestive
Would be cool if true. Looking for a dark and gloomy metroidvania this winter. Either this or axiom verge 2 should scratch that itch.
Pretty crazy to think in 2020 video game magazines still scoop up exclusives like this. I miss the days of magazines being the main way of getting gaming news and the demo discs they came with.
OH MY GOD YEAH! Something to look forward to again. This is my most anticipated game. I can only hope!
@HotGoomba___Rebrand Kirby sucks, and no one accuses him (?) of suggesting anything. Be at ease!
If that is for Silksong I will eat my own shoe.
Still need that radiance gold coin and the Pantheon of Hollownest (seriously, only evil beings could have designed that endgame). Been holding off on trying. Only thing I need for the 112% and completionist satisfaction.
I didn’t know Edge Magazine still existed!
In all seriousness, it’s more likely to be Elden Ring. Suits the ‘git gud’ reference and would be more worthy of a magazine spread than Hollow Knight as while it’s a fantastic game, it’s not in the same popularity brackets as Souls games.
@nessisonett
I think you could be right. Silksong doesn't quite feel big enough for a magazine like Edge... and when Simpkins said that the guesses were "quite close", she could have been alluding to the Hollows in Dark Souls.
I don’t see a response saying that anyone was quite close. Did she delete it?
@readalie it was in response to a comment that said "black egg". Still there
@nessisonett some good points but Hollow Knight would also fit the Edge MO. The last world exclusive front page was Spelunky 2 for example. Plus Jen is a big Indie fan and wouldn't be surprised if her last ish was as such
Bakugan II: Champions of Eggland
Looks like a pit from E.T. on the Atari 2600. If we get E.T. Remastered, my reaction will be... well I won't have much of a reaction to be honest.
YES! Been waiting for info on this game for EVER!!
Please announce physicals too.
@itarou just watch a video or a online game guide but if you want to do it yourself there is nothing you can do but put in the work yourself.
I am currently playing Hollow Knight whilst awaiting silk song! It is a fantastic game and I have been so excited for SS.
Bapanada! Forget Cyberpunk, Valhalla, Mario 3D all stars and every other big release this year. Silksong has been my most anticipated game for sure! Is it finally time?
@FragRed check out Ninty Fresh and Switch Player Magazine if you are a Nintendo fan! Print media still lives!
@Friendly I had a lot of fun (and also felt a huge deal of rage) while playing HK but I ended up giving up at 95 or 96%. That's so damn hard. But I'm really happy with the experience I had after spending so many hours traveling the world and (re)playing some sections time and again
Pleeeeeeeease be true! I need some more hollow Knight in my blood
I just subscribed to Edge, I miss getting a monthly games mag and it's a lot cheaper than buying individual issues....
@John_Deacon Yeah, the godmaster dlc is massively difficult for completionists to complete (or maybe I'm getting too old for very reactionary games).
What doesn't help is that there's also some RNG in some boss-fights, and if I lose to that I lose my spirit to try again very fast.
Looks more like Sonic's the Hedgehog's pupil to me, the silhouette is rounded, it doesn't taper to a point like it does with the image of Hornet.
Seems over-hyped to me.
@itarou use the map and get any upgrades for the map. The map pretty much tells you what paths you have been to already and ones you haven't gone through yet. The additional markers will let you know how far and close you are to identifiable landmarks like benches and stations.
I hope it's finally Silksong, the one game my son has been asking about all year. He'll probably hope it's in tomorrow's Indie Direct. He hopes it's in everything. Even watched some of TGA hoping.
Gotta happen 1 of these days.
Help me out. Was Edge the sister publication of Next Generation? The one with all of the infamous interviews during the 32/64bit era?
this color and design reminds me of the OUYA. Maybe they're building a new one!!!
@rjejr Didn't know you had a Hollow Knight fan in the family. It's is one my favorite games now. Love me some metroidvania and that one really got me responding to its challenges.
Happy Chanukah, by the way! And just in case I don't get another chance Merry Christmas, too!
Since you have a programmer in the family (right?), here is what a colleague of mine shared this Holiday season:
int night = 1;
while (night <= 8)
{
System.out.println("Happy Chanuka!");
Chanukah.enjoyTheDay();
night++;
}
That would be cool to have that much hype over the admittedly very successful, but also very indie Hollow Knight sequel. I personally think it is worth the hype and attention, but I agree with others, I'm not sure how many would feel the same way. Reasonably convincing graphical overlay, though...
In the end, I just want to play the game. The previous tease that had Team Cherry discussing their approach has me sold already.
@aaronsullivan Thanks, Merry Christmas to you and your family. You buried under the snow and remote teaching from home? (I know you're around here somewhere.) We got a 4" snow day, though it's more like an inch of snow atop 3" of ice. My snow blower was like, yeah no. W/ everyone at home and groceries for the week I only did like half the driveway and the 2 cars, I was wiped. Kia Sportage is nice to drive, not so nice cleaning 3" of ice off the roof.
Two programmers actually. The college freshman is doing ok, 2 A, 2 A-, and a B+. Mostly remote so it's hard. The HS soph had a 98 avg, 103 weighted, so he's fine. I'll pass that code onto them, see what they say.
The youngest is waiting on Silksong and into the hard games - he played the Bravely Default 2 demo for 2 hours on hard last night. The demo. Who plays demos on hard? Wacky kid. The older 1 is more into sleeping until 3. When he does wake up he's been playing XC:DE. He's trying to finish up the main story - which the family watched me play a few years back - so we can all watch him play the new post game part which none of us have seen yet before he goes back Jan 23rd. They've been playing HW:AoC together every afternoon from 4-6:30, dinner time, so they do have some common ground. Glad I bought it release day and not wait until Christmas. Glad I didn't buy Cyberpunk 2077. 🤣 (I wasn't buying it anyway, nobody in my family plays first person view games.)
This pandemic is taking a toll on our family holiday. Only 2 nights of gifts for Hanukkah then we gave them both cash for the last 6. Only 1 Christmas gift each, stockings may be empty. We're trying to isolate for 8 days so I can spend 1 hour at my parents house Christmas day - social distancing and wearing masks. I know we shouldn't, but we probably are anyway. It's a tough call. I think to make it up to my kids I'll buy a PS5 when my son comes home from college in May for the summer. Call it "half Christmas" or some such. Maybe a nice Ratchet & Clank bundle, the only PS5 exclusive we all want to play.
Sorry for droning on, and so maudlinly, seasonal depression in a pandemic during a coup is extra fun. 😎 Don't go on twitter. Never go on twitter. My holiday gift tip to you. 😁
But what does it all mean? Silksong release date?
@NintendoByNature we’ll see that I think in february?
Since the magazine apparantly will be released february 2021?
Yeeees!!! Cant wait
Stop teasing and just give us a release date already, this is one of my most anticipated games
Of course it's world exclusive. What else would it be, space exclusive?
Guaranteed any information in the article will be on the internet prior to the magazine hitting the shelves
I feel like I actually need to go back and finish all the side content and actually beat the true final boss of the original game. Some of the bosses are just so hard though...
@nessisonett After an experience I had the other day I know the pain of merge conflicts all too well...
This seems to happen to me when games are delayed constantly, I kinda lost interest. MAYBE I'll still try Silksong whenever it shows up, hard to say but sometimes I never bother with those games when they finally do release. :c
Amazing series, happy to give Team Cherry every penny when it launches 🎉
@rjejr your son likes Hollow Knight? I thought it was the most incredible game, I bought it purely on the hype it generated when it came to Switch... it ultimately exceeded the expectations said hype set! My son is currently hopping between Animal Crossing and Hyrule Warriors, Pikmin 3 Deluxe will get fired up soon too.
Hollow Knight taught me not to blindly trust reviews. It just didn't work for me.
@HeroponRiki A joke of that quality. You must be a dad.
@AmplifyMJ My younger son is into the harder games, my older son is into JRPG. Very weird Christmas this year, my son got Pikmin 3, which we've all already played on Wii U I bought the console when the game released, and I got Kingdom Hearts 3 b/c it was $8.85 after shipping and tax. Still not sure what other KH games I'll play first - played 1 and 2 when they released way - have 1-6 on disc, may borrow 2.8 from the library. But that will be after my son goes back to college in 4 weeks, we have to watch him play the Xenoblade Chronicles sequel DLC Connections, as soon as he finishes the main game, hopefully this week.
Do you get Disney+ over there? We bought a year the other day for all the upcoming Marvel tv shows but there's also a bunch of other stuff we want to watch. Watching the Mandalorian now, as good as advertised. We were going to sign up for HBO Max to watch Wonder Woman 84 but I think we'll just stick to Disney+ for now.
@rjejr yeah we got Disney+ when lockdown started lol. I got a good deal on it as an add on for my phone bill, but my wife got offered it free for six months... that beats my good deal so I’ve cancelled my subscription and it’s now in her name 😅 My son Jamie is back playing Hyrule Warriors. I didn’t get any games or even eShop gift cards this year! BUT I did get some Cookie Monster Jammies. DOOM Eternal launched too late and digital only on Switch killed it as a gift from my wife, but I’ll just buy it myself in the New Year. Lovely to see you all together on Twitter, take care Sir.
@AmplifyMJ Cookie monster jammies sounds cool. My kids are STILL trying to finish up HW: AoC. They go down every day at 4:00 saying "We're going to finish today." but they never do.
Merry Christmas, and I suppose good night on your end. I'm about to sit down to some lasagna my parents gave us to take home, mm mm good.
@rjejr enjoy! I’m destroying some noobs on their new Switches on Super Mario Bros. 35 😅
@AmplifyMJ Yeah you would be destroying me too, that's why I'm smart enough not to play. At least in Witcher 3 when I look bad nobody knows but my wife and me.
@nessisonett how does it feel to be wrong? Plus hornet screams get gud
@PickledKong64 Eh, I’m looking forward to Silksong regardless. Elden Ring is absolutely vapourware.
I have been summoned from my resting grounds to acquire the information.
Waiting for my issue of Edge to come it. Very hyped.
hollow knight was hard?
Sounds like they may have difficulty levels, which would be good for me as the first game was great but one of the bosses later on I couldn’t get past and I’m too old to spend hours trying to beat it!
Man I loved the challenge of the first one, I hope they don’t go overboard in making it easier (difficulty options would be nice I suppose, like maybe an easy mode and a “classic” mode). I wish we had a date though, and does that first bit mean Team Cherry is releasing another game before this? This wait has felt so long, I’ve been so anxious for a date!
That being said, this also sounds very different, I wonder if the game will feel entirely different than the first. I hope not but maybe I’m in the minority there...
Can't wait. I hope this comes out soon. Why else promote it? I remember a magazine article on Bioshock Infinite a year before it came out. I don't recall if it was the cover story, but why do a story so far out?
meh.. 🤔 Hollow Knight had its moments and I played it all the way through, but it had some annoying gameplay elements.
The platforming controls didn't feel as sharp and tight as Axiom Verge. I remember often blaming the controls and slightly laggy response time, and it was very frustrating. This was not the case with Axiom Verge: if I screwed up in Verge, I knew it was my fault.
The other main issue was that the atmosphere was incessantly depressing. It never let up. While parts of the game are really fun, there was always this depressing undercurrent that tainted my enjoyment.
The ambient music tracks drone in the background, and while they are somewhat nice, most tracks are very non-descript and tend to all blur together... and they're all melancholy.
Edge Magazine is still a thing in a physical format? That is the most surprising thing here.
The wonder of discovering the world in Hollow Knight, not sure whether a sequel can ever give that same feeling. I read somewhere that it will all be above ground now though, so I'm still curious to find out more.
"- 'Tricks' such as Sting Shards, Pimpillo Bombs, straight pins, can be crafted at benches from shards gathered from defeated enemies."
Bleh. Never been a big fan of combat consumables in games where combat involves actual action. Either the fights are designed to be beaten without them, making them effectively limited-use cheat codes (and inevitably pointlessly hoarded according to the megalixer rule), or... the game actually expects you to get through fights by item-spamming, making it bad. Real bad.
Team Cherry notably skirted and subverted these pitfalls brilliantly in their first outing, so I have to imagine they know better than to fall into them now, but... it still sounds worrying.
Loved Hollow Knight, it was literally a 2D 'Souls' series game.
Unfortunately at my age I lost my lustre after battling a specific boss over and over again! I wouldn't mind if they started you right back into the boss battle, but I literally had to for a futher 15 minutes to get back to aforementioned boss! In the end I gave up sadly.
Shame, as the game was awesome.but the grind to get back somewhere then get wiped out within under a minute.... Just nah.
Team Cherry, are are insanely talented developers.
Silksong confirmed by 2029 and if you don't like it, William Pellen will come to your house and teabag your mother while criticizing your general interests and hobbies
This is among my most anticipated titles of the year, up next to titles like Horizon Forbidden West, GoW Ragnarok and more.
This is great, but I haven't even beaten the first one yet! I got stuck towards the end of the game since I am not particularly good at Metroidvanias and haven't been back since. If I do play the first Hollow Knight again, I would probably have to restart it completely since I don't remember much that happened in the game. Seeing this new information does make me want to give it another chance though.
