Fitness Boxing 2: Rhythm & Exercise has been a quiet hit on Switch. Released last month, it offers a cheaper alternative to Ring Fit Adventure and though it didn't expand upon the original game as much as we hoped – we gave it 6 stars out of 10 – there's still a decent workout to be found.
Whilst gyms continue to remain shut and Switch sales continue growing, it's not too surprising to see it's now shipped over 500,000 units. Announced by developer Imagineer, this figure includes both physical and digital copies, pushing the combined series to over 1.5 million sales in total.
To celebrate this milestone, Nintendo has also dropped a new update for free, adding a 'No Mercy' option for trainers Martina, Sophie and Janice. Providing a much tougher workout for players, it was only available with Lin and Evan until now, so it's nice to see this expanded.
If you're interested in trying it out, you can access the free demo off the Switch eShop, letting you give the Daily Exercise and Free Training modes a go.

I enjoy Ring Fit for what it is, and I've been trying to get back into the routine post-holidays. I've kinda been thinking about picking this up for when I'm not really wanting to rearrange my furniture and swap out cartridges each time.
Anyone utilizing both games? Do you tend to utilize the Fitness Boxing games as more of a replacement for Ring Fit, or do you tend to use them in tandem?
Basically, I'm not sure if its worth the investment if its not going to really do much more than Ring Fit already does.
(Follow up question: Does it really make a difference in choosing between 1 or 2? It looks like there's not too much added in 2, so if 1 is cheaper, then that's the one I'm going with)
I have it and love it. I have Ring Fit also but this is a quick way to burn 300 calories in about 30 minutes without having to hook the joy con to the ring fit ring.
I stopped playing the first one because it never recognized my side-steps and ducks and this was too frustrating. When I heared that you can set some moves to be always counted as "ok" I ordered the second one and play it since three days. Loving it very much so far!
I don't have much time left each day and was pretty active before my fitness-studio closed the doors due to Covid, so I try to get the most out of my playtime: when you do 10 pushups everytime the front-foot changes and play on the new "no mercy" mode it's a really intense workout for 20 - 30 min and worth your time!
On the wii, this series would have been considered shovelware. Cool that its not.
@derdennis I found the trick to getting the side steps to register is to make sure the backs of the joycons (where the triggers are) are parallel and facing forward.
Of all the new trainer we have... I would have loved if Nintendo made Samus available as a trainer! This would be so great!
@Desrever they made a lot of small "quality of life" improvements for the second one (to be honest: they should have made them as updates for the first - but they didn't!), like when there are some movements that the game doesn't register correctly you can check an option where these movements are always counted as "ok". (I let my kids play sometimes and they really got annoyed when their movements were mostly counted as misses - also for myself I had a lot of problems with some sidesteps and ducks to be counted properly).
I own both games and there are so many small improvements that I won't go back to the first one. I'd suggest you get the second game if you plan on sticking with it for some months!
Bought this earlier this week and absolutely love it. I definitely agree that it feels more like Fitness Boxing 1.5 than 2, but figured I really need the exercise now that my region is back in strict lockdown so it was worth it either way.
That’s good to hear that this series is doing well.
@derdennis yes, zero suit Samus would be cool as a trainer. Also, wii fit trainer, little Mac and doc Louie would’ve made so much sense. A little Nintendo rep would be good.
I play the Mega Mercy mode, almost always taking it easy. If I don't overdo it I have a better experience and am much more likely to keep putting the cart in my Switch and punching the air everyday.
It took the first Fitness Boxing game around 1 year to reach 500,000 copies sold.
Fitness Boxing 2 reached that milestone in ~1.5 months.
@Desrever 2 has some bells and whistles, but also some frame rate stuff which can temporarily sink your score. This “no mercy” mode is very much needed.
I was using FB for cardio and RF for conditioning, but bored of RF quicker. I also just bought a spin bike, so FB2’s days may even be numbered.
Hope that helps.
@FatHedgehog @derdennis
Thanks! This is definitely a huge help. I'm not trying to be super ripped, nor am I trying to lose a bunch of weight, so I'm really just trying to stay active now that I rarely leave the house, and any improvements in my physique along the way have just been a nice bonus.
@Desrever I like fitness boxing much more and felt I got a better exercise out of it, both cardio and muscle building.
I eventually sold my ring fit and stuck with FB.
The game gets boring in RingFit I found, and too much time between exercises.
I’m a fit individual so I’m coming from it from that angle, to be fair.
I also think that the ring fit game can actually cause more muscle imbalance and stress injuries due to the repetitive nature of the exercises... in playing the game youll unlock some moves that do so much more damage so suddenly you find yourself doing a very lopsided number of one motion which is NOT good for you.
FB is also multiplayer and my wife and I have a great time with it. Ring fit has no such option.
Honestly Fitness Boxing 2 deserves a 10/10 score because it has got me loving exercise. Its made me stronger, fitter, and slimmer. That's a result, and kind of the only result that matters for a fitness game.
Got Fitness Boxing 2 in digital so I don't have to hunt for a game card, I can just dock and play.
Fitness Boxing 2 is far better than FB1. Don't buy FB1 even if it's much cheaper. Get FB2 and consider it investment in yourself and your future.
@TimboSlice @lionyone
Well damn... y'all make some pretty compelling arguments. And I have felt like a lot of my Ring Fit time is spent navigating menus and dialogue boxes in between levels. My original concern was that Fitness Boxing wouldn't deliver a full body workout the way Ring Fit does, but that doesn't sound to be the case
@Desrever I prefer Fitness Boxing to Ring Fit Adventures. However:
I think in terms of quality Ring Fit is a more premium game, better made, more love and certainly more money put into it.
But for me, I just like boxing. So Fitness Boxing became a great companion and I just fire it up and there it is.
With Ring Fit I appreciate the story elements and the humour but at a certain point it became a bit annoying for me. Making smoothies and stuff like that was dull. I rather jump in the action.
Something I find strange is Nintendo Life gave Fitness Boxing 2 a relatively low score, 6/10. If you're looking simply to get fitter, stronger, and slimmer, well then it really doesn't matter that the game doesn't have all the cute graphics, humour, or ace music it could do. The graphics work perfectly for boxing. You can put your own music on via another system if that helps you although when you're boxing combos, fast chains of different punches, you will need to focus a lot to complete the combos. It is a an extremely functional game in the best sense of the word. If you want to get your body fit the game delivers in spades. All you need is to show up and box away and you'll get dramatically physically stronger and fitter surprisingly quickly. Of particular note is that the game cleverly encourages that habit of daily boxing. Once you've started a streak of daily boxing you will want to keep it up due to the game's subtle but effective rewards and encouragement. Boxing increases your real world confidence as your body becomes more powerful and more capable, as your core muscles develop by following the game's instructions. Most likely you've not been using much the muscles that boxing uses so you will see rapid body change. The game selling like hot cakes tells you that people are recommending the game by word of mouth as they lose weight and get stronger all thanks to the game. Perhaps that's the best rating a game like this could get. Come and box and you could make 2021 the best year your body has ever had.
