We all know that video gaming is big business, but how big? Well, the UK video game market passed the £4 billion marker in 2020 – the first time it has ever happened (thanks, MCV).
Video gaming generated a massive £4.2 billion in revenue in the region last year, according to preliminary data compiled by the Entertainment Retailers Association (ERA).
The ERA says that 'entertainment' revenues – including music and video – jumped by 16.8% to a hit record £9.05 billion. However, gaming was by far the most profitable sector – something which has been true since 2013, when revenue reached £2.3 billion.
In 2020, video game revenue jumped 14.5% year-on-year, but it was digital sales which saw the largest increase – hardly a shock when you consider that everyone has been indoors for most of the year. Digital sales – which includes mobile and streamed games as well as downloads on consoles like the Switch – increased to £3.6bn, a rise of by 16.3%. Sales of physical, packaged games rose 4.6%, to £598.5m.
FIFA 21 was the UK's most popular game last year in terms of units sold, while Animal Crossing: New Horizons came in at number six – although it's worth noting that position does not include digital sales of the game, so it's not an honest reflection on how well New Horizons has done in 2020. We'd imagine a lot of sales will have occurred digitally.

So in theory with digital sales the numbers could be way higher! Why don't we know digital sales of AC but we know them for seemingly every other game on the list?
I wonder where ACNH would be with digital sales included. If it beat COD it would make my day!
GTAV does it again.
I don't understand why so many people buy Fifa in physical form as they are pretty much worthless within a year or two and just clutter up stores shelves that have hundreds of copies they will never shift for under £1. One day there will be landfills with a couple of decades worth of old Fifa games no one wants or sports games in general.
I'm more shocked there are still a lot of people buying GTA5 in 2020
Fifa, Fifa, Gta 5, Call of Duty and Call of Duty.. okay these are UK charts.
@Cheez Nintendo are normally not willing to disclose the information from my understanding. Other developers and publishers normally don't mind, but Nintendo is very private about the figures. As to why they are private... shrug
I bought it digitally and that isn't even included
Probably I am in the wrong gaming circles to understand this - but seriously fifa21? Or maybe it's the lack of real life football driving things up?
@Zenszulu I always buy it in physical form so I can resell it before it loses all value. If I buy it digitally for €60, its cost me €60. If I buy physical I can sell it on usually in March or so for about €25 - €30.
@kozaru the UK is mad about football. The Premier League is probably the biggest league in the world right now. Make sense that fifa would be popular there
Was't gta v free on epic game store this year? That would boost those numbers up
@MS7000 they probably don't put all of the sales through the books - its probably about 60% "cash in hand" sales.
If they start talking openly the tax man would be around.
@Bizaster Oh silly, British people aren't real!
@sanderev I'd say that a lot of charts look like that, I call these "bro games"
I'm amazed there are enough NBA fans in the UK to get that game in the yearly chart.
This is a misleading article. All the figures in that list are physical copies. Animal crossing shouldn't be singled out as being different.
Yes, it would be a different chart if digital sales were included, Minecraft would probably top it.
Edit: was wrong, that's probably crazy sales for AC as it launched after lockdown in UK.
@SonOfVon Swap FIFA with Madden and you'd have the US charts pretty much...
@BumpkinRich As I understand it, that chart does include digital sales, however Nintendo doesn't release digital sales numbers so Animal Crossing (and any other Nintendo game that might've been in the chart) is physical only.
Edit: The link to the actual report confirms this.
@dmcc0 Sorry your right. Edited to reflect this. Usually UK charts are physical only and the section that chart is about talks about physical sales, which is where is got confused, but AC is the only one singled out.
As I say in my edit, that must be crazy figures for AC.
Dear Nintendo Life,
Would it be possible to maybe arrange a moratorium on using the name of that (sadly) popular football/soccer game? Both the sporting federation and the game are quasi-criminal and have no place in a civilized forum. GTA, Yakuza, Doug Bowser - these we can tolerate, I can acknowledge their existence.
But that 4-letter F-word?
@HotGoomba___Rebrand The previous year FIFA/CoD will have around 10 months of sales vs the current versions with around 2.
@blockfight Ah, so I am totally misunderstanding the UK component here, thanks for clarifying
@COVIDberry dude chill. Its a game. Just because you don't like it doesn't mean it shouldn't be talked about.
@blockfight Is that you, President Bowser?
@COVIDberry yes it is. Well done, you've discovered my secret.
