Cyberpunk 2077 might have only been released last week, but someone is already playing it on the Nintendo Switch.
YouTuber Nintendrew has uploaded a video of CD Projekt Red's latest release running at full speed on Nintendo's hybrid system. The game can even output 1080p when the device is connected to the dock, and it's playable with the Joy-Con and Pro Controller (both are recognised as Xbox gamepads).
As always, there's a catch...and in this case, the secret is a hacked Switch with Android and Google Stadia installed. It's also noted by the YouTuber how this same method can be used to play various other next-generation games.
Cloud gaming on the Nintendo Switch is currently limited to a few games, and even then, it's not the best.
Last October, CD Projekt Red said Cyberpunk 2077 "probably" wouldn't come to the Nintendo Switch, and earlier this year followed up by saying it "might be too heavy" for the hybrid system, but would not rule it completely out after the release of The WItcher 3: Wild Hunt - Complete Edition.
Would you like to see Cyberpunk 2077 on the Switch if there was a cloud-based option? Leave a comment down below.

Think it was glitchy now but just wait for a switch port LOL (Never going to happen) Edite: I watched the video and how it runs better then ps4 and Xbox WOW.
Really telling when this runs better than the PS4 version
Imagine that, Cyberpunk runs better on Switch than PS4 or Xbox
When the video's thumbnail and title are so obviously clickbait that you can't even watch it
-besides there are already terrible ways to play Cyberpunk 2077, they gave us plenty of options.
No cloud gaming!
Of course all this prove is that a version of Cyberpunk 2077 like Control and Resident Evil 7 are possible on Switch but only through the cloud. Kinda odd how CDProjekt Red didn't take advantage of that, still a neat idea but just isn't for me.
The idea of a "Switch version" of Cyberpunk running better than the PS4 and XBone versions makes my petty, fanboy heart soar.
Neat.. but I won't hack my switch for that. Like it just the way i brought it.
Hack my $300 Switch to do something I can easily do on a phone 🙄
Not really surprised the game didn't live up to the hype. Then again, we saw the same with Aliens: Colonial Marines, No Man's Sky, and Fallout 76.
More disappointed than anything else. Let's just hope they can patch out the bugs before I decide to take the plunge and get the game for myself.
The crazy thing is that Cyberpunk might have saved Stadia. It was completely pointless and not exactly doing well but there’s been loads of people playing Cyberpunk on Stadia as it exemplifies the benefits of cloud gaming - running an intensive game without the worries of your system being adequate. Of course, it introduces a new set of problems to do with streaming but internet speed for a lot of people is a whole lot faster than their PC is powerful. It’s mad, Stadia has essentially been a joke since it launched but now it’s genuinely a valid option.
I’m surprised. I’d think that the switch would blow up due to the sheer power of Cyberpunk.
That said, I feel sorry for CDPR for this game not doing very well, with all the hype.
Not a fan of Stadia, but it's funny how a shoddy cloud gaming service plays Cyberpunk (on what's basically a portable PS3) better than the previous two most powerful consoles, of course before PS5 and Series X|S.
Not worth hacking the Switch for this, but it's funny to imagine.
@Agramonte Exactly. If you want a bigger screen, just use a Android Tablet instead and connect a Xbox One Gamepad or something to it.
No point in hacking Switch for this at all.
No thanks. I tried the Control cloud version and it was riddled with artefacts and connection drop-out warnings. I'll take natively rendered software any day of the week.
I didn't buy a dedicated handheld to put up with that kind of crap. If people want their games to be tied to the strength of their internet connection, all the power to them (I guess those outside of Australia will have better luck there), but count me out.
@SwitchVogel Because it's streamed from a powerful server.
@nessisonett To further proof your point: I never considered Stadia before I read your comment. I don't want a PC or console apart from my Switch. But I do want to play Cyberpunk.
Edit: aaaand I just googled (ha) what I need to do so. Looks like I need some Chromecast thingy for the TV and stuff. Which is already more things that I want to have lying around at home just to play this one game.
Ray-tracing on a switch? Lol
@RandomAfricanGamer Stadia is just passing screens and control inputs. You could do this on a Chromebook.
I like how Stadia gives gamers without pricey PCs an option. Isn't there a danger to using it if you don't have an unlimited internet plan?
@nessisonett
The narrative about Stadia failing was both stupid and wrong. The platform was already growing slowly and steady all the time.
The hate towards cloud gaming and Stadia from certain noisy gamer groups, was perhaps some of the reasons for this wrong perception?
The problematic CP2077 incident on last gen consoles certainly helped a lot of people discover Stadia this month, but eventually it would happen sooner or later anyway with other games as well.
Stadia certainly did not live up to insane hype some people and media had before launch, that is for sure. But those expectations were also highly unrealistic.
Google is a totally new player in the gaming industry. They are building a whole new platform, and had only around twenty games ready at launch, and no big exclusive AAA titles at all.
No new gaming platform regardless of technology behind it, cloud or otherwise, will be a instant big hit with so few games available at launch. It's always about the games, and it takes time to build up such a library and a new platform. Just ask MS about this, when they started with Xbox twenty years ago!
So Google clearly build Stadia for the future of gaming, and they are just starting to build it up slowly from the ground up. It needs to really shine in around 5-10 years, when the internet infrastructure and 5g is more reedy for it.
I would assume that Stadia has lived up to Google's own expectations? Any sane person would not expect more from a new platform, with out any current gamer base, and with so few games.
Google's just recently bought some game studios, to build new exclusive AAA titles for the Stadia platform. It will still take years before we see any of them.
But Stadia is currently the most impressive cloud gaming platform, from a technical perspective. It has the lowest input latency of all the cloud platforms and the best image quality (up to 4K). And it's available on phones, TV and in the browser.
Google only need to build up the game library for Stadia, and that will happen over time.
@meltendo
For sure. But no one outside of US (or Canada?) really have data caps on their home internet!
So yes. This problem is real for some americans. Rest of the world has nothing to worry about.
The Google Stadia can run on literally anything with a HD screen, that's the whole point. This is no feat.
@Yanina
Yes. For now you need a Chromecast Ultra to play Stadia on your TV. On any other device, like PC or tablet, a CC Ultra is not needed.
Later, all the game streaming services like Stadia, will also come to smart TV's. Then a CC Ultra is also not needed there.
CP2077 pre-orders on Stadia also got a free CC Ultra and Stadia Controller. But the deal is gone now.
The issue with Cyberpunk isn't related to PS4/XBO hardware specs - it is related to CD Projekt Red's incompetent management, massively inflated Witcher 3 ego, and greed.
The biggest mystery is how Cyberpunk actually made it to retail
I'm actually enjoying cyberpunk on my series X... Looking forward to next gen upgrade.
Cyberpunk is amazing if you play it right. I’m the type of person that loves to explore every nook and cranny and find as much stuff as I can. I like to pretend I’m in the world and I let the story come to me... instead of speed running... I walk it.
With that said... I am playing on a PS5 but I don’t ever have issues with crashing until a few minutes after I complete a difficult mission that I stumbled into by walking the yellow dotted line. Sometimes I do random missions on the way to whatever waypoint I have marked but nonetheless I’m accomplishing stuff haha. The game is overwhelming huge and at times almost makes me feel closterphobic with the size of the surrounding building. I do wish there was a legit switch version but yeah.... the game is amazing really. I just looked at my total play hours on it and I’m at 13 hours..... and I just hit the intro title screen ha. It’s amazing. I actually look forward to the crashes because it snaps me out of it and I can take a break. As of yet I have not lost any progress and it loads me in right where I left off.... but like I said it usually happens a few minutes after I finish a difficult mission and I’m just wandering around aimlessly. I’m probably lucky it’s not on the switch... the game sucks you in if you take it slow... I don’t wanna sprint through a game that has been in production for 9 years.... I wanna explore the world and yeah it’s nice. I’d say by this time next year it will be smooth sailing and if they make the multiplayer anything like GTA5 this games gonna be around for a long time.
@Yanina you don't need a Chromecast, you can play with your phone, tablet or laptop and just use the controller's you already have. The only thing you need to buy is the Cyberpunk game.
@Bizaster It's only trash on last-gen consoles. It runs from fine to good on current gen consoles, and it runs really good if you have a decent gaming pc.
@Yanina nah you don't need any of that. You don't even need to pay a subscription. You just need a computer keyboard or a bluetooth controller for your phone. Just download the app sign up for the free tier (not the pro version) and you can buy whatever game offered on the platform
@Kimyonaakuma How is it clickbait when he is playing Cyberpunk 2077 on his switch?
@Mjoen I am playing it on PS4 Pro and Stadia and i agree. This game is best when you take your time. Looting every single spot, doing all the side quests and just having fun.
@nessisonett I don't know, its the first time Stadia has managed to run a game better than Xbox One X even and it has the same reduced NPC settings as the base Ps4/Xbox including all the glitches and basic AI as does PC.
All versions will likely be up to speed in the next year.
I will add that I think the Geforce now version is the only reason for cloud streaming due to its ray tracing and high settings.
@Entrr_username you need to stream it through the Internet though, I'd imagine you need a very solid connection too for something this big.
@dres wut? I would suggest to do some more research on those statements 😅. There’s still data caps in some country’s in Europa. Let alone the rest of the world.
This game is probably the biggest disappointment in all my years of gaming. I don't do AAA very often, and this was right up my street. Alas, it's become everything I hate about modern gaming. I cannot abide a company pulling the wool over my eyes. So I'll happily not buy this in the vain hope they show some integrity with their next game. What usually happens is, they tweet saying they have heard us, and folk will buy it again thinking they matter. Boo.
I admire the creators vision, not the company's integrity. Awful.
But from what I hear, everyone playing it on Stadia is having a great time. Looks like it got it's killer app unintentionally!
Imagine hacking a Switch to install Android and Stadia on it.
@dres This isn't school dude
I read Nvidia GE Force Now plays Cyberpunk better than Stadia.
Even so I've been enjoying Cyberpunk 2077 on my Xbox 1X. Many others have reported the same on their 1X. Next gen gaming systems aren't essential yet for 1X gamers. But sometime next year that will change as games begin to roll out that aren't even released on 1X.
I would surely buy a cloud version for this game, a port is clearly not going to happen when you see how it runs on ps4/xone .
@liveswired @Lionyone
While Geforce Now is a very capable streaming platform, and the games really look good with ray tracing etc., there are also some downsides to the platform.
Like the fact, that you sometimes need to wait in a cue, before you can play the game you want on Geforce Now. Even as a paying subscriber.
And like with all game streaming platforms, besides Stadia, the games can be pulled of the service overnight. On Stadia, you at least always will have access to the games you bought. It's your games.
Even if Stadia looses access to sell the games later on, due to licensing issues, you will always have access to the games you bought.
So while CP2077 currently looks better on Geforce Now, I would rather avoid the possible cues and play it on Stadia.
Geforce Now is a fantastic add-on service, if you already are a PC player with a great gaming setup. Then you can buy the games on Steam, and alternatively stream them to all other devices with Geforce Now.
But for someone who has no big Steam library or gamer PC, I think Stadia is the better option right now.
On Stadia I buy the game, and can play and stream for free.
On GeForce now I need to buy the game on Steam or similar, and then pay 5$ a month to stream. The free version of Geforce Now do not give me access to Ray tracing, and I need to wait in a cue to play.
And like all game streaming platforms, both Geforce Now and Stadia evolves over time and gets more capable. Stadia will also get ray tracing next year.
If the cloud in question is like Nvidias GeForce Now, or Shadow, then absolutely. Stuff like Stadia or how they did RE7 and Control is a huge heck no.
@PhilKenSebben
On Stadia you have options.
You can buy individual games, like CP2077, or you can subscribe to Stadia Pro, that gives you access to a library of games while you are subscribing.
I like options. And I think most game streaming services will give you these options some day.
MS already said, that while xCloud currently only offers access to the Game Pass library through a subscription. They were also looking into offering individual game purchasing in the future. Like on Stadia.
I look forward to all these options from different cloud providers.
I like to purchase some of my games on Stadia, to make sure I never loose access to them. But for other games, a subscription like Game Pass and Stadia Pro is just fine.
@TheLightSpirit
Yes. That video from IGN did not look good. Not at all like how it really looks on Stadia. I do not know why that Video looked so blurry either. There are better ones on YouTube.
You really need to try and experience it yourself. It easy and free to try it out.
@dres options are great. Thats why I choose the option not to trust Google. Theyve shuttered far too many services they felt weren't living up to their projections, for me to put a penny into it. Services like GeForce Now and Shadow, do the same thing, but utilize your steam/gog/epic libraries. Services already proven, and that aren't going anywhere, anytime soon. If Stadia is around in 3 years, I'll be willing to give it a shot. Until then, the most they get outta me, is a salute to some of my (and others of course) fallen services (most recently Google Music). Killed by Google is a website worth checking out.
@Yanina Google had a promotion when you pre-ordered cyberpunk you got a free chromecast ultra and a controller. It even lasted a day or so after the game came out till they ran out of stock. Basically spend $60 and you got $99 worth of hardware for free.
But that's not the only way to play Stadia. If you have a desktop or laptop you could have played it on there as well with basically any controller you already have in your possession. Or you could use mouse and keyboard. And if your laptop or desktop has video out you could just connect it to a TV. Same thing goes for your phone.
If you have good internet and adequate network hardware Stadia runs fantastically.
@TheLightSpirit @dewokkel
Ok. Fair enough. I was not aware that this was such a big issue still in some european countries. Here in Scandinavia, it's not a problem we have.
I would still think it's a bigger problem in the US, though?
@Noid This. It really isn't anything impressive or interesting. It's a shame so few people can notice that. I really take against the framing of it "running on Switch" when it isn't.
@dres yeah, I think you’re right about the US, but it’s ridiculous all together that there are still data caps. Capacity is not really the problem for ISP’s I think.
@PhilKenSebben
To be fair. Google has mostly shut down "Free" services, were people did not invest any money.
And some services were also replaced with newer ones, were you also could move your content. Like Google Music became YouTube Music, and you could transfer your paid content over.
Nintendo and Sony also shut down products all the time. Like when they go from one console generation to the next. Things evolve.
I literally tried to get this working yesterday. Not on Switch though, I was a little more ambitious. I tried to get it running on Wii U via it's web browser. Alas I failed, but I am fairly sure there's a way to get it working. Wii U may not have enough memory, but with some effort I reckon it could use any game streaming service. Perhaps if the stream Res was lowered a little.
Unlike some closed minded people here, I'm keen to give streaming a try.
Once we get the holidays behind us, I think I'll give one of them a go. I haven't decided which I want to try out yet, though.
This article is worded all wrong, though. Stadia is running the game, not the Switch. Switch is just running Stadia, which runs on a plethora of devices. But even that is a stretch given Switch isn't even running it's own OS here. It's basically just an Android tablet in this case.
Guys, please stop saying it's"powered" by android or that it runs better than xb1/ps4. If those consoles wanted to stream, it would run exactly the same.
Just...stop.
@Folkloner truly some of the dumbest people apparently exist here in this comment thread.
@broskiplays because the subheading literally says "powered by Android", which is a flat out lie.
@RandomAfricanGamer no wonder you're surprised, because you'd first have to know how Stadia works 😂
@dres Found the Google PR person folks!!!! Joking aside, you're right. It was mostly free services. And despite being able to move my music to YouTube, I didn't want to do that for a whole host of reasons, and it left me salty. So did Glass, and a few other services. But thats besides the point. So is bringing other companies into it (not that you're wrong there either), when I'm just stating my opinion on Stadia. I currently feel the other services I mentioned are better, but if Stadia makes it a few years, I'll give it a shot. Glad some folks are loving it, love new technology, and hope yall keep enjoying it. Just not for me, not right now.
@Shadowthrone I believe a few offer free trials. GeForce Now had a 90 day free trial, I believe they still do. Shadow doesn't, but they will refund your $12. There's a few more that an internet search will help ya find. Its neat tech for sure, and they all are a bit different.
@Shadowthrone I was a big PC gamer a while ago and had a good selection of Steam games. I looked up which games ran on which streaming service, and went for Geforce now. I haven't upgraded to the premium (they don't yet have the infrastructure to go big yet, but it is growing) and while I wait in the queue I play on my other consoles (it can take anywhere from 5 minutes to 45 depending on time of day). The downside is it only gives you an hour with your game, then you have to change game. This limit is removed when you sub. If I sub for 2 months of the year I can play the "big" November, December games for £10, plus the cost of the game.
Considering how much we pay for internet services these days, getting to use the connection to stream without a huge investment in hardware is a bonus.
Streaming isn't ready for going big just yet, but it provides an option and valid choice if you don't want to spend £450-£1000+ on a nice gaming rig to run the new releases.
@westman98 Do you work for CDPR?
@dres Most ISPs in the US have no data caps.
Now, cell phone companies, that’s a different story.
@Agramonte What model is that controller?
For the cynical way this has been made and released, it doesn't deserve anyone's money. Might give it a look when the price drops below £20 and it's been properly patched. Plenty of working games in my backlog to play between now and then.
@Snatcher My guess is because Stadia is possibly using the PC version. While I haven't played it (if I decide to, it will probably be PC, I'm a Nintendo fan who's a PC gamer), I keep seeing the PC version runs better than the Xbox One and PS4 version.
Runs great on Stadia thankfully. Last gen gamers got screwed.
Just can say "meh"
Glad I never looked forward to this game really, let alone feel any hype for it. IF it comes to Switch, I might consider getting it some time, but for now the PS4 version seems worse than the sometimes almost unplayable blurry Outer Worlds on Switch (which still is actually mostly playable sometimes even beautiful in smaller areas, and a good game, got a physical copy used on Switch recently and I'm enjoying it).
@Snatcher Yeah, but I wonder how many people with the older consoles tried running the game in performance mode, to see if it will solve some of the issues on the Xbox One and PS4.
@tseliot
Oh ok. Not gonna lie, this whole time I thought stadia was literally just another console and not a streaming platform.
@BadWaluigi2
🤣
@Agramonte Dang, sweet phone! What is it? o . O
It’s a hacked switch, so I’m sure Nintendo will shut this down as it promotes homebrew and hacking a switch.
@TG16_IS_BAE
Of course not.
Doesn't take a rocket scientist or an actual job at CDPR to see how badly managed that company is.
@westman98 Why are they paying refunds out of pocket if they are greedy?
@TG16_IS_BAE
Because Cyberpunk's disastrous launch has made it into mainstream news, and they are attempting to save face.
The fact they are refunding a game at all due to its awful quality which they intentionally hid from consumers prior to launch is the pure definition of greed, arrogance, and mismanagement.
@TG16_IS_BAE hi they're not. That doesn't begin until December 21st if it even happens and they've only said they're willing to go that far not that they will.
They actually held up people's refunds by not speaking with Sony or Microsoft and then saying they could have refunds. They also are cutting off their refunds for physical copies right before Christmas so good luck to the people getting it for Christmas.
Their greed would be obvious in just the way the game was marketed and released but they decided to leave no doubt.
The PC versions runs better yes but still not very good. It depends greatly on your hardware. Some people with the newest video card and CPUs can't even play it whole people with lesser machines can.
It really makes no sense at all.
Just Stadia. Has nothing to do with a Switch hardware
@nessisonett Exactly. I bought the PS4 version. It was so terrible and Stadia ran a promo where if you buy Cyberpunk 2077 you get a free Stadia Premium. So I bit the bullet and got it for Stadia. After so long of trashing it. 😂😂
@TheLightSpirit lol We never owned any of these games. We are always paying for a license. Buying on Stadia is no difference.
Hey Nintendo lets punish the Stadia...we are the boss, we are the wicked...but i can even fix the Joy-Con...this is Nintendo.
@AstroTheGamosian don't forget the fail that was/is Duke Nukem remake/boot lol
@lordzand "Hi they're not."
"It starts tomorrow."
: /
@westman98 Looks like they are fixing the problem.
@TG16_IS_BAE
And? No one is saying they aren't fixing it.
@Yanina if you are interested in trying to "stream a PC" Shadow.tech is a much (MUCH!) better option than either Stadia or Nvidia's offering.
It may cost a little bit more, but you get your own Windows virtual machine that you can install and play games on. I have been using it for about 2 years, it works quite well.
Just got Stadia to play cyberpunk and it's pretty damn smooth after 2 hours. I might have to do this hack on my Switch so I can be on the couch enjoying it. I'm sold on cloud gaming for new big games.
@TG16_IS_BAE Really?
https://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2020/11/comcasts-data-cap-finally-goes-nationwide-in-expansion-to-12-more-states/
@Lone_Beagle That's one company.
@westman98 You're complaining a lot, though.
Nice!
Surprised Nintendo is sharing this news because it's a hacked console and Nintendo really hates hacked consoles.
@TG16_IS_BAE
Why shouldn't I?
I bought the game, played it, stopped playing it after countless bugs/glitches/crashes, and am now attenoting to refund it.
But it's literally streaming from a server, it's not using the Switch GPU or CPU that much at all.
@westman98 Why? ‘Cause they are fixing it for you.
@TG16_IS_BAE
And when/if CDPR actually finishes the game that they clearly rushed out, I'll buy it again, and likely at a cheaper price too.
I have no intentions of letting CDPR keep my money after selling me a poorly made and deceptively marketed product.
@westman98 8 years of development time is rushed? Huh.
@TG16_IS_BAE
Yep.
It doesn't matter how long ago they announced the game - it was a clearly a rushed and broken product that should have been delayed into 2021.
CDPR could have announced Cyberpunk in 1994 (when the company was founded) and it would still have been a rushed product had it launched it the state that it is in now.
@Riptidre Control offers ray-tracing on a Switch too
Considering playing via the cloud is considerably better than the native PS4 and Xbone versions, I genuinely don't see why they shouldn't do this (and hell, they probably should have done this for the actual PS4 and Xbone versions instead at that).
Funny how many people are saying that Cyberpunk is running better on Switch than PS4 and XBOne. This is Cyberpunk running on a high-end PC at Google, then being displayed via internet on the Switch.
It's not at all like Cyberpunk is running on the Switch. People really don't understand how cloud works.
@westman98 Sounds more and more like you have extremely unrealistic expectations. Maybe you’re just too hard to please.
@Bizaster It's not trashy in the slightest when playing on proper hardware though.
@kameryn Na man, that is a CoolPad Legacy. It is dirt cheap here. They are the test phones for work.
https://coolpad.us/legacy/
But it has a 4,000mAh battery and 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac Wifi. It also has all the Tmobile 4G bands. So perfect if just streaming games.
I have GeforceNOW and Shadow PC on it.
@TheGameChallenger That is a $59 phone with no contract. And most people already have a phone.
@nlllv that is the Saitake 7007X ($25). I just copied ETAPrime (see min 4:00)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R1pm876OiKw
@TG16_IS_BAE
Expecting a functioning product that doesn't crash hourly, has minimal bugs/glitches, and a decent frame rate that doesn't regularly stay below 20 FPS is too much?
How much does CDPR pay you?
I love how the same person that mocks people on here for being Nintendo "boot lickers/shills" etc. is defending CDPR hard. You can't make this stuff up.
@westman98 They are fixing it and offering refunds. Quit yer belly achin’.
Ingenious. However, I would rather play Cyberpunk on PC.
Streaming is the future then...
stadia works great at my place.
@SwitchVogel @Entrr_username
Not really, since it's running in the cloud and not on the Switch itself.
@Snatcher Well that's no surprise, those outdated consoles just don't have the required performance. It runs fine on PC if you have the required hardware.
@TG16_IS_BAE in short a lot of people still didn't get one yet.
So yeah I stand by my comment.
EDIT: oh I see. Looks like you were doing their PR for them. Thanks.
