On the notorious Reddit board, TIFU - short for Today I F***ed Up - one user has spilled the beans on the inspiration behind his newborn nephew's cool name.
Little baby Zacian's parents have no idea that his name is actually the name of a big dog with a sword in his mouth, it would seem, and user Bladehuraska is planning to give the new baby some Pokémon-related presents for Christmas to "reveal the truth". Good luck with that, dude.
Bladehuraska was playing Pokémon Sword in the back of a van (you know it's going to be a good story when it starts in the back of a van) and he'd just caught the legendary Zacian with a Quick Ball.
While they were discussing potentially unique names, I kept overhearing they wanted it to begin with the letter Z... I jokingly suggested, "Hey, Zacian is a cool name. It means sword in Japanese." My mother and family loved it, so it's now official.
Unfortunately for this man and his nephew, Zacian does not mean sword in Japanese. As the comments on the post point out, Zacian is just Za + cyan, just as Zamazenta, its legendary companion, is Za + magenta - you can even read director Shigeru Ohmori speaking about it in this interview with GameInformer. But the real question is, who names their baby seconds after it's born with the first random word suggested to them?
Still, there are much stranger Pokémon to be named after, and Zacian is pretty cool as a name. Plus, it's a legendary Pokémon, so that's gonna give the kid some clout, right? Let us know what you think the worst Pokémon name would be to give a baby. Winner gets to name the next Nintendo Life sprog.

LOL I saw this yesterday I found it quite funny. (Lucky kid)
Zacian sounds cool.
It's way better than i have ever heard there was an Indian parents named their twin babies (boy and girl) with Covid and Corona.
"Hello. Let me introduce you to my son, Trubbish!"
It’s actually a pretty cool name and I’m not usually one for non-traditional ones.
I'm just here wondering why the family were so insistent on having the name start with a Z.
It has to be Trubbish! Even worse if he/she/it lives in Yorkshire.
“Take Trubbish outside and put him/her/it in the bin”
@Abeedo Must be a Zardashian.
This guy definitely f'd up, but I sympathize with him on a smaller scale. Because this happened to me:
My aunt admiring my grandparent's new dog: "Isn't she Precious!"
Me, a sarcastic teenager: "Yeah, that'd be a great name."
Precious lived for 14 years. Great dog, dumb name.
If I'd name my kid a Pokémon, I'd name them Magikarp.
@Abeedo
I have 2 students in my school with their names begin with letter Z : Zaneta and Zelia.
Both of them are girls and siblings.
@nessisonett
Kim Kardashian => Jim Zardashian. 🤣
Haha whoops. Well, Zacian is a pretty cool-sounding name. Only problem is, how are they pronouncing it? My co-worker's son named his daughter Saria, after the Ocarina of Time character. Problem is they are pronouncing it Sa-Rye-Uh, instead of Sa-Ree-Uh, which is how it would be pronounced based on the Japanese. ..I didn't have the heart to tell them they'd been saying her name wrong all these years.. XD
Almost sounds like a Polish name.
I wanted to name my daughter Kameko, it means “Turtle” in Japanese.
My wife said no. She didn’t want to think of turtles every time she looked at her daughter.
I’m still a little sad. I love turtles. Lol
At least he didn't suggest Zubat.
Zacian could be a great name, but I'd have to hear it pronounced in Japanese. Seems kind of harsh. Is it ZAK-e-in or za-KEY-in or something all soft sounding like sassy-in?
My niece and nephew's names on their birth certificates are Emmerich Sandeen and Flash Gorman so you never know with a name. 🤷♂️
Heaven help any child named after Regigigas. People will forever be misspelling their name.
"Hey, Slowpoke, hurry up and come down, dinner's ready"...
Probably also wouldn't be a good idea to name your newborn kid Koffing, especially during this pandemic and all that.
@rjejr I've always read it as "say-sjun", never as a "k" sound.
@Tyranexx Either that, or they'll think he's stuttering when he says his name out loud...
poor kid is going to have a pokeball thrown at it
That is funny.
Sincerely,
Alexander Probopass Olney
"Accidentally"
Don't just assume the meaning of a word in a foreign language unless you actually know.
I didn’t know you could pick Zacian as a starter
@Abeedo Because Z is the best letter, of course! My name is the most common Z name (Zachary), but it still gets bonus cool points for being a Z name at all.
Here's my twins, ditto and ditto
I really don't like many modern naming trends.
Should have just named the kid Zachary Ian and gave him the nickname of Zacian.
@rjejr Zay-shun?
@AlexOlney
That would be genius! my favorite pokemon and my favourite NL staff member in one convenient place XD XD
I will forever resent my parents for not naming me Porygon2.
That’s so sad—and funny at the same time! XD My Parents should’ve named me Swampert.
Hey I accidentally named my kid Metagross, because I hate children.
@nessisonett i always assumed it was Zah-Shun lol
Sudowoodo, GET OFF THE SHED!
@ThanosReXXX Or everyone else will use too many syllables....
@Tyranexx A tongue-twister either way, then...
Well, at least you can shorten to to Zac.
Zachary is a name, after all.
Better than accidentally naming your kid Daikatana.
It’s at least a person name-sounding name I guess. Instead of something like Pikachu or Magikarp.
@ThanosReXXX At least that one can be trimmed down to "Reg" or "Regi".
Zacian is a solid name though
Zacian sounds actually quite decent. Imagine you‘re called "X AE A-XII" like Elon Musk‘s child. No joke, look it up.
Sounds like he has no regerts.
@Duffman92 yeah, he'll probably go by 'Elon Musk's kid' when he's older.
@LexKitteh coincidentally, I had some Mormon neighbors with a daughter named Sariah, pronounced suh-RYE-uh. I guess it was a name from their book.
I agree though, the sage is SAH-ree-uh
@LexKitteh Ever since Twilight Princess I've liked the name Ilia for a girl and have suggested it often enough that even the Mrs likes it now but we don't have kids. Only problem is it's variant spellings is common as a boy name in Slavic countries which we frequent.
"But the real question is, who names their baby seconds after it's born with the first random word suggested to them?"
A case could be made that it's better than agonizing about the name for months and months.
1. Why would you name your baby sword in any language?
2. Isn't katana like, common knowledge?
How has no one suggested Jigglypuff? "Hello, my name is JigglyPuff but all my friends call me Jiggles... and that's MISTER Puff to you"
Zacian doesn't sound that bad. The worst Pokémon name for a kid would probably be Dunsparce. The look, coupled with the name reminds me of the word dunce, lol
I do have my own Pokémon naming story. My youngest daughter's name is inspired by Eevee. Essentially, my older daughter was determined to name her little sister some really wacky names. Crackers being her #1 choice. Well, that wasn't going to happen for a myriad of reasons, lol. She then decided to name her Eevee, after the Pokémon. Well, we like the name (if not that exact spelling) and because it went along with one of our choices for names, we decided we would name the baby Evelyn, with her nickname being Evie.
Could be some much worse names...
Imagine calling your kid stunkfisk
If he’d just named the boy ‘Ken’ he could have got his treasured mYsTiCaL JaPaNeSe SwOrD aEsThEtIc without sentencing the child to a life of mispronunciation and bullying.
poor kid is gonna get bullied, this is like the parents who named their kid Sephiroth
@Abeedo to buy him couple extra seconds for roll call
This is cringe content
In response to some of the other comments here - A friend of mine is named Zackary (it would seem that Zachary is maybe a more common spelling though). A lot of people have spelt his name as "Zach" over the years and he does not like that. He tells people that if they want to shorten it, then shorten it to "Zack" as there is no "H" in his name. He does not like seeing his name written like that.
To be fair, it isn't one of the 150 true Pokemon so it doesn't really count.
@nessisonett Gesundheit. 😂
@ThanosReXXX If you're going to name your kid say-sjun might as well just name them Saiyan and be done with it. 😉

I've been scrolling down the comments all the while thinking what would be the worst pokemon name to give to a human child. Honestly? About half of them would be a cruel joke.
Seriously, give it 1 minute. Snorlax? Parasect? Kanghaskhan??
@Kienda I bet she's a great person, but I would have broken up with her right then and there.
Idiot.

Perhaps it’s time I tell my wife the truth about our son, Mr. Mime’s, name...
Well then I'd like you to meet my children Metalface, Kefka, and over there is Majora.
I will have 3 children.
The first will be named Abra
The second will be Kadabra
The third will be Alakazam
@rjejr
The Japanese pronunciation is ~ ZAH-she-unn.
The 'she' is an attempt to transcribe a Dutch pronunciation of 'see-unn' into Japanese, so taking the pronunciation directly from the Dutch and saying it ~ ZAH-see-unn may be even better than copying an approximation.
The word cyan seems to have had an interesting history, in researching it I found out the Greek pronunciation resembles 'key', the Dutch 'see', the Japanese 'she', and English has 'sigh'.
Magenta doesn't appear to have such divergent pronunciations — the Japanese 'mazenta' is pronounced like English magenta.
I'd hope the English dub ends up pronouncing them as ZAH + English cyan / English magenta, but somehow I feel like they'll make up something weird and different.
Time to legally change my name to Missingno.
That kid's gonna get bullied so hard during middle/high school
Cyan... Majenta... Yellow... blacK... The four who are there, print them here!
I wouldn't necessarily say that it's an f-up. Zacian is a pretty cool name.
But if there had to be a worse Pokémon name you could give to a child, it's Jigglypuff.
Nothing against that cute little puffball singer, but think about the torment that kid would have to go through in life.
Jigglypuff, Piloswine and Guzzlord the worst. Xato (and Nato for twins), Volbeat and Lunala the best.
All they need to do is put a hyphen inbetween and it becomes Zac-Ian which are 2 perfectly fine names.
Someone has to send this kid a chew toy in the shape of a sword
Yes, Jigglypuff or there's Sneasel, Cacnea, Purugly, but if they really wanted one with Z there's Zigzagoon. A name like Zigzagoon could become a Pop-star.
Best part is, Zacian is canonically 'Zamazenta's eldest sister' in the English and Japanese and Chinese translations-
Could be a boy's name, though!
Probably
@Kienda pretty sure Kame is turtle and Kameko's meaning is "child of a turtle/tortoise "
Slowpoke is worst name
Certainly one of the better Pokemon names to give a human. Wonder what others would be acceptable to the average ear like that. I'm struggling to think of many.
@Seanvstherobots im about to teach you a word thatll save you a whole lot of time.
Instead of “he/she/it”, there’s one simple word/pronoun that represents all or none of those words! It’s the word “they”.
For situations like this, AND for when you meet non-binary people.
Zacian sounds like the name of either a very tanned fashion designer, or a really horrible chav kid
Its mental how the name can sound classy AND low-life at the same time. Like Zacian could have siblings called Kyler, Dylan and Shannon
@Lilia yeah, you’re right.
It was six years ago and I kinda forgot what it meant. Hehe.
@HotGoomba___Rebrand well, as a consolation she said I could one day buy a turtle and cal it Kameko, so it saved the marriage.
@ancientlii Honestly not a bad idea
I think it's a pretty cool name. You don't see a lot of Z's running around.
@rjejr it's za-see-uhn for us Westerners, while Japanese pronounce it closer to za-shee-an 👍🏻
@GilbertXI This is my son, General Leo. Please salute out of respect, or his sister, Terra, will fry you in 3 minutes.
Bad names to have that are pokemon names: slowpoke, jynx, trubbish, garbodor, ?ditto?
Good names to have that are pokemon names:
Zacian, zamazenta, kubfu, calyrex, raichu?, Regidrago? Litten
@Tyranexx That instantly made me think of "The Regginator"...
@rjejr Haha, yeah, indeed... Nobody would mess with that kid during lunch breaks...
A couple im frends with named there kid Eevee with the intention of it being the kid can grow up to be what ever thay want. I find that intention fairly sweet.
"I'd like you to meet my son, Wishiwashi"
So many that would be awful to name your kid, Lickitung & Lickilicky jumped to mind 1st. But 1 had me laughing harder. Only 1 name was a real word before a pokemon, "Brian where is your brother, UNKNOWN?!" 🤷🏽♂️😄🤦🏽♂️
I had always thought I'd give my child their middle name from a LOTR character Arwen or Elrond. But never happened. LoL
Trubbish would be the worst.
Just turn the last half into a middlename, presto:
Master Zack Ian Normalname
Trubbish and Grimer would be terrible names but I think Nosepass takes the cake, or maybe Slowpoke, but Slowpoke would be a good name for a cat.
Also Wynuat would be a bad name. ( I may have spelt some of those Pokémon names wrong, autocorrect doesn't know all the Pokémon)
@LilMuku thanks LilMuku. I don’t care about what he/she/it, I mean they say about you...
@ThanosReXXX And when your kid does well in school you get to tell everybody that your kid is a super Saiyan. 😂
@bluesun And thank you.
@clvr za-see-uhn to za-shee-an
I could live w/ either of those. Not a big fan of a hard C/K sound. Thanks.
@ThanosReXXX ... That might've been intended, actually.
@rjejr you're welcome!
Yeah those both roll off the tongue quite well in my opinion too!
So you’re saying I shouldn’t name my kid Voltorb?
If i had a kid id name them mewtwo worlds best name for a kid lol
@Tyranexx Ah, you evil person, you.
@rjejr And you instantly secure the rights to use the meme "Just Saiyan".... (badumm-tssshhh!)
No, don't bother, I'll see myself out.
Hey, Not as bad as Gabordor!
@Seanvstherobots I see what you were attempting
But firstly it was grammatically all over the place, and secondly shows that you DO understand my point
What about "Muk".
"Oi, Muk get down here and take out the rubbish!"
Well Robin Williams named his daughter after Princess Zelda so eh.
@ThanosReXXX Saiyan is an underappreciated word. Too much DBZ hate to overcome.
So a bad name I have tons of them.
But I will only choose one and the one I choose is Drampa.
I like cool and unique names it's better than being in a class with 5 people named Zack
Please don't name your kids Muk. Yuck!
The evolution of trubbish
A rather Oddish naming choice, isn't it?
gunshot sound
@rjejr There's DBZ hatred? Then again, I guess I'm not even entirely surprised about that. Some people REALLY need to get a life. Or some booty...
@nhSnork holding the gun Let this be a lesson to everyone.
@ThanosReXXX life=booty, booty=life 😁
I hope that kid doesn't get picked on and bullied in school because of his (Pokémon) name, oof
@rjejr Preach it, brother. Preach it.
@ThanosReXXX Everything I learned playing "The Witcher 3: Let's Get Geralt Laid." 😂
There's a Curb Your Enthusiasm episode in there somewhere.
The worst name to have would be Lickitung
(However you spell that)
Mom: Everyone, meet my son Lickitung!
Lickitung or unknown would be pretty bad
I named my child Mr. Mime when I had him 3 years ago, where was my news story?
Name Your Child Pika Chu (Last Name)!
I knew a guy in High School who used to go by the name Entei. Not sure if it was directly Pokemon related, but he definitely leaned into the Pokemon jokes and references.
I also have a friend who was a foster child, that was given the chance to choose his own name. He nearly chose Ash because he was big on the anime as a kid, but he decided with a different name, although it happened to be the same name as one of his friends.
I think it would be cool to be named after a pokemon. It can't be any worse than being named something like hashtag. I think a even better name would be Bayonetta.
@rjejr It's pronounced ZAH-shee-an
@yoshiman5551 also i looked at the dex entry for Zacian and it said gender unknown
@yoshiman5551 Thanks. That vibes w/ what @clvr told me back in Dec when we were doing this. 😉
"it's za-see-uhn for us Westerners, while Japanese pronounce it closer to za-shee-an"
@rjejr it's how it was pronounced in the anime, but i normally pronounce it zay-shee-an
