Mario Kart Arcade GP DX, the current Mario Kart game playable in Japanese arcades, will be receiving an update next week which adds a new mode and a character tweak.
Produced by Bandai Namco, Mario Kart Arcade GP DX cabinets offer arcade goers a variety of gameplay modes including a single-player Grand Prix and multiplayer races. On 10th December, a new 'Green Shell All-You-Can-Throw' mode will be added to the game – and it does exactly what it says on the tin.
In this new mode, players will be given an unlimited number of Green Shells to fire at their opponents. Item boxes can give players a bumper of sorts which offers a little bit of protection, but we imagine there'll be an awful lot of stop-start shell smashing involved here.
Elsewhere, Wario, who was previously an unlockable character only, will now be available to select at any time and as soon as you jump onto a machine.
The things we'd do to have a set of Mario Kart arcade cabinets in the Nintendo Life office...
Let us know if you like the sound of this new Green Shell mode – and whether you'd like to see something similar in the next Mario Kart console game – in the comments below.
Thanks to Greatsong for the tip!

If only All Mario Kart Arcade ported to Switch in physical...
yo wario? that IS crazy
Infinite green shells? More like army sniper training! Am I right? I know where the door is
Infinite green shells would be amazing in Mario Kart 8 deluxe
I know Mario Kart 8 Deluxe has been selling like hotcakes but Nintendo if you make Mario Kart 9 or at least 2 or 3 Mario Kart 8 Deluxe DLC's I'd appreciate it also I would buy it Immediately
I'd love a collection of all the arcade releases. That'd tide me over till number 9
call me when infinite blue shell mode comes
Arcades still thriving in Japan while in the United States they are on life support.
Everybody gets Mario Kart updates except us.
@kingbk considering the recent sega sammy news don't be too sure
@Anti-Matter Trust em, I've played it and you do not want this game ported to the switch.
It's a great arcade experience, but the controls are absolutely terrible and the gameplay is very very bland. MK 8 DX is head and shoulders above this offering.
It's sad that the mobile and arcade Mario Karts get updates but the Switch one doesn't...
Add infinite blue Shell mode instead.
All you can throw green shells? @ryancraddock I'd love to see footage of this, if NL can get it. I think it sounds possibly too brutal, but if Nintendo is adding it, maybe there's something to it, or how they implemented it.
I can't help notice the arcard MK pic above shows a lower camera angle, that's more like a first person perspective, like Mario Kart VR ride at Universal's Super Mario World.... Which I think looks great. Which I would like in MK9.
I bet Crash Team Racing will put out a sequel before Mario Kart 9, at this rate. Which I welcome!
@SMUGSLOTH69 I guess there is no incentive.
@kingbk the idea of arcades are awesome. But in the usa, people just play on pc
Has any one ever played the 3D Virtual console Mario Kart experience?? Hollywood Bowl at Leeds/UK has one and it is AMAZING fun!!! you sit in the car with a headset and gloves and it is like you are REALLY there...I loved it so much!!
I would end up having half those green shells come back at me after hitting a wall.
You can play the first 2 Mario Arcade Games on a modded Wii........ so I've heard
Infinite Wario
@AndyC_MK84 Are you seriously suggesting that MAME on a raspberry pi could run a game like Mario Kart Arcade GP DX?
Seriously Nintendo, make 4 more cups for MK8D and make it paid DLC.
@AZD1222 I know and it's not like we can just stop buying Mario Kart 8 DELUXE it's sold so many that by now I'm scared we won't get a new original Mario Kart till the next Nintendo system which could be 3 or 4 years from now because of how well the SWITCH is selling just hope for the best I guess
For a moment, I thought infinite blue shells...
If I had the money....
It’s a fun game with friends at the arcade, I’ll check out this mode soon then! But I definitely do not think it would port well to the switch. I agree with others, Mario Kart 8 is vastly superior. I do enjoy that you can play as a sentient drum and also have a warped version of your face on your driver’s license though...
This endless green shell sounds like a bad decision imo.
I can't imagine how unlockable character works in an arcade machine. Everytime you start playing you have to unlock them again?
So... Mario Kart 9 when?
First Super Nintendo World, and now this. Japan's been getting a lot of exclusives lately, lol. I'm kinda jealous, tbh. XP
I really would like to see if any new courses would be added. Probably not, but one can dream, right?
