During the latest Super Smash Bros. Ultimate broadcast, Masahiro Sakurai announced Sephiroth would be joining the roster next week on 22nd December for $5.99 USD. Else you can pick up the Fighters Pass Vol. 2.
If you can't wait for the one-winged angel to arrive though, there's a special way to unlock him early. All you have to do is take part in the special Sephiroth Challenge and defeat this boss character.
Once you defeat him, you'll be able to play as him early and also play on his stage the Northern Cave ahead of the official release. As noted by Nintendo, there are three different difficulties.
The Sephiroth Challenge mode is only available to players who have access to the Fighters Pass Vol. 2, or have pre-ordered the Challenger Pack 8: Sephiroth. This event runs from now until 22nd December.
Will you be taking on Sephiroth? Leave a comment down below.

Gentlemen, ladies.

Thank you.
This is an awesome way to unlock a char early. Bravo Ninty!
I got extremely lucky on my first attempt at very hard. I was almost dead but got an aether spike just off stage and ended the match.
I kind of wish they'd done this for all the fighters because I've always preferred fighting them to unlock them.
This is a really cool way to unlock him.
Well I guess I'll do this tomorrow, I haven't played Smash in a while anyways.
The fact they were thinking to make it one shot one kill would suck.
This is honestly a really good way to unlock a fighter.
Do you have to beat all there difficulties or any one?
@IAmBerk The hardest mode.
I did it in 10 seconds very hard mode, first try
Chrom Up B at ledge
Instant confirm kill
The only reason I beat Very Hard is I used Hero and used one of those moves that ended up being a one hit KO and it hit 😅 I feel like I cheated haha
I bought fighter pass 2. So hey, I’m up for the challenge.
@IAmBerk I beat him on normal and unlocked him.
Guess this is the only limited feature Nintendo make that we could forgive them for.
@gloom you just got the luck of the draw.
... seriously there are STORIES about the whack family of spells and their too common results of "But it failed!" in the Dragon Quest franchise so take the victory
(Seriously they even made a meme of it in Kyril's coup de grace in the Dragon Quest Heroes spinoffs)
I love this game
This guy is AGGRESSIVE. Too bad this is a limited time challenge, this would be fun to revisit! Like the Mewtwo boss on Pkmn Stadium.
I thought it was free. It would be too good to be true if the challange was free
@TheSmashTheorist sadly- these aren’t the days of SSB Melee or Brawl anymore...
@IAmBerk it's any of them. He considered very hard only he said but decided against it
I am liking how he plays. Wish more characters played like this, for those that don't want to go through combo strings, infinites, all that nonsense.
I'm a Smash NooB and beat him on Normal after about 8 tries. LOL. Excited for this though as I'm an old school FF fan. I wish we could get more FF love in here like my boys Squall, Zidane or even Cecil.
@Giygas_95 I got luckier. Sephi literally walked into a warlock punch
he doesn't appear for me any tips?
We keep getting one step closer to a Dissidia (not NT) port.
@TheSmashTheorist They're not giving you the DLC for free.
I'm just waiting for the inevitable video of Luigi winning by standing there
What an amazing character!!!!
Beautiful. And love the stage and music!
Man i wish he reworks ganondorf or at least add demise (origin of the demon king) in the same way. To add him as a badass boss.
TAKE THE SEPHIROTH CHALLENGE!
BEAT SEPHIROTH ON VERY HARD, 2,998,559671,349 TIMES İN ROW!
@0blivion you mean the days where there was absolutely zero dlc, way less content and game bugs and balance issues were just there forever.
Dont miss them days.
I do really like his stage and the music. It’s also cool that battlefield now you can play some of these tracks.
Man the step up from Medium to Very Hard is huge. I destroyed him on the former, but struggle to get him below 120 HP or so in the latter.
Playing as Cloud because...why wouldn't you?
So I can pay 10% of the price of the game and I can get one more character... I wish I had that type of money because I love Sephiroth. But as I don't buy Cloud for Wii U I won't be getting the One Winged Angel for Switch. If they were more like $1 each I'd definitely be able to afford them... Even if that would still make them more expensive than the fighters already in the game.
@Roibeard64 I miss the days of unlocking content through our own hard work, sweat and tears. The bugs can stay in the past though.
@Cheez If a DLC fighter is breaking the bank, how do you own a Switch or the base game, mate? Hope next year improves for you! What a ***** year it's been.
@Broosh $6.99 here and there can add up. Maybe it's not just this one purchase, but he is trying to be money conscious overall....
@0blivion You can already do that... 🙄
@Broosh look at it this way. For the base game I paid less than $1 per fighter. So the DLCs are a 600% markup. I could afford the base game yes. But if the base game was $444, the price if every base fighter was $6, there would be no way.
There is a bit more value to fighter purchases than just the characters, though. Keep in mind that every DLC fighter for Ultimate has also included a new stage, plus new music.
I admit that can still be a hard sell for some people, at $7, but I feel it's worth considering.
I was lucky enough to receive some eShop funds for my birthday in September, so I used a good chunk of them to purchase the phase 2 bundle, making the value a bit better. Even if I'm not personally a fan of every added fighter, I want to give my friends access to their favorites when we play Smash in local multiplayer. (Eventually ...)
@Cheez Ah, so your perception of the game's overall value is divided among the amount of fighters alone, not stages, music, single and multiplayer content, spirits etc. In a narrow lense, yes these extra fighters added after the fact would be expensive. For real though, check out Dead or Alive DLC if you wanna see some true BS 😂
Took me several tries, but I finally beat Sephiroth on Very Hard mode with Min Min. She's basically my go-to fighter when I am trying to fight difficult opponents, given she has long-range attacks.
@Roibeard64 Yeah, that's really the only reason why people still play Melee anymore: because the game is so unbalanced, players tend to use that to play competitively, when really, it pales in comparison to its successors.
Brawl had its flaws too, like Meta Knight being overpowered, random tripping, and slower movement, but it had such a wealth of content and a killer story mode that it made up for all of that. Furthermore, it introduced many game elements that we now take for granted in the series, like Assist Trophies, Final Smashes, and the ability to listen to the stage and menu music.
@tobsesta99 I’m talking about the days before PAID DLC; using skill, unlocked cheat codes and hidden modes and so on. God, are you really this dense? 😏
@sanderev if only it was
@Broosh When you look at states at songs it gets worse because there are more stages in the base game than characters. Yeah I just don't buy overly priced dlc. On Wii U I bought the Mario kart dlc though, but it gave you 16 new tracks and like 8 new drivers for the price of 2 smash characters...
@Strife89 If you consider the amount of stages, music, spirits, etc in the base game with the dlc the pricing looks even worse. I believe 74 fighters, 104 stages and 800 in base game verses 1 fighter, 1 stage and however many songs in dlc. For me it's not worth it unfortunately.
@0blivion Look who’s talking.
Sephiroth is just some genetically modified weapons weaponized science fair freak show he should leave smash and go back to the lab rat mansion where he came from and belongs.
I drink the inevitable Final Fantasy fan-tears, lmao.
