For many years now, it's been an accepted fact that, despite numerous attempts to better it (including a remake), the N64 title GoldenEye 007 is the best Bond game ever. So good, in fact, it's even had a spoof movie made about it, and has also inspired a full-blown documentary into its creation.
Many have tried and failed to topple Rare's FPS masterpiece (we still shudder at the memory of James Bond: 007 Legends), but most would agree that Hitman studio IO Interactive has the best chance of succeeding. The company has just revealed that it is working on an "original Bond" project which serves as an origin story and will allow players to step into the shoes of a young Bond as he attempts to secure his coveted '00' status.
No platforms have been confirmed for Project 007 (that's a working title, by the way), and IO Interactive has stated that it is currently "recruiting elite talent from the around the world" to work on the game, which it will also be publishing itself.
Given that it's quite likely to be several years away, it would perhaps be unwise to expect a Switch version, but – depending on whether or not a more powerful Nintendo console is available at the time of release – we could potentially see Project 007 come to the Switch as a "cloud" version, as has happened recently with Control and will happen soon with IO's Hitman 3. Or maybe not.
Whatever happens, if any studio can come close to matching Rare's seminal shooter, IO Interactive is it.

And.... It won't be on switch
100% Not coming to Switch and NintendoLife is sure to be making an article about how Switch owners were robbed of another game yet again if Mass Effect and the Persona 5 rumor articles were any indication lmao
With that being said IOI is a perfect fit for a stealth-focused James Bond title considering their work on Hitman
I’d get it on my Series X. We’d get a proper Bond game from these guys. Excellent fit.
Coming to Switch... via the cloud... eventually.
@UltimateOtaku91 no sir you are wrong. It is gonna be on switch but cloud version
A James bond game from the hitman devs.
Switch or no Switch. This is the one to keep an eye on.
Sorry, but Nightfire is the best James Bond game
I find it funny that it was someone's job to actually make that trailer. I mean there's no title for the game and nothing else to show. Just a announcement that they are making a game. Would have been lot easier to just put out a social media post on one of those platforms with a still image saying "hey we're making a Bond game". Just my opinion so it doesn't mean crap.
Right now, I can't think of a better developer than IO Interactive to take care of the Bond franchise. My only criticism of the latest Hitman games is that they're too short, and half the missions are locked behind DLC. After that, Hitman I and II are AWESOME! I can't wait for this, and to try Hitman 3 on Cloud for Switch.
Highly doubt this is coming to Switch.
This will be a third person spy/stealth game. While the HITMAN games were never my cup of tea (and I have tried), I do think they will provide an interesting take on Bond and the spy genre. Very intrigued.
@RustedHero
I've been saying this for years. When movie studios start work on movie, they put out a press release that says "Hey, we're working on a movie". When they have actual footage, they put together a trailer. Video Game companies, however, invent footage the second the devs start coding. The time and money that went into this trailer should've gone into the game itself.
@RustedHero
Bit man, seeing the barrel reveal and the horns come in? It gave me chills. Guess I've been going through 007 withdrawal.
@WhiteTrashGuy Makes sense, there hasn’t been a real Bond film in 18 years.
@Ron22 Totally agree.
@WhiteTrashGuy Well that's good then if it did it's job. However in that case I believe though it would be better to get excited to know exactly what to be excited for. I mean is it a FPS? A 3rd person game like Splinter Cell? A risk taking RPG Bond game (yes I know highly unlikely)?. A point and click game like the Telltale games (another unlikely)? It can be anything. We don't know so for me getting excited over not knowing a damn thing other than it will have the Bond name makes no sense. I like to know what to be excited for or at least a idea or what type of game it's going to be.
@JokerCK Dude
It ain't coming
Switch doesn't even have the first two World of Assassination games and cloud games are an extremely new thing to the West. Control isn't a guarantee they're bringing every multiplat under the sun. A lot of them might still miss Switch
@Krambo42 A Die Another Day fan
That's an extreme rarity
For everyone saying "this isn't coming to Switch", I'd venture that when the game does arrive - which could be two or even three years away, if not longer - we might already have Switch 2 (or whatever Nintendo has planned for its next machine). So who knows?
As a Goldeneye 007 (game) fan, I'm happy to hear we might get something good and new, even if it's not coming for the Switch
What it has to do with Nintendo? IO Interactive couldn't give us a native Hitman port of past gen. Not interested in Cloud version at all.
As they can't use Sean Connerys voice acting, it will be worthless anyways.
@Damo It has PS5 and XBoxX written all over it lol.
I was talking to my mate the other day about "who has the Bond license now?, Haven't seen a Bond game since 2013". Fantastically timed news and in good hands. IO is a solid fit for a Bond Game. Looking forward to whatever they come up with, Bond could even "foil" one of Agent 47's Hits in a DLC mission.
@TheFrenchiestFry Man...I’ll never understand that.
@GrailUK Absolutely - especially as those consoles have just launched, and the Switch is now over 3 years old.
So it is possible to get there licensing rights that everyone on these threads seems to think is impossible.
if it's years away what's the point in this trailer? whole lot of nothing, just reveal it a year in advance tops.
@Damo Still not at all a guarantee. This is about as vapid as reporting on stuff like Persona 5 on Switch when Atlus literally said nothing about it.
Plus big AAA multiplatform games have always missed Nintendo systems regardless as of late so it's not at all a guarantee that this will come to either the Switch or whatever Nintendo's next gen system is. This game is likely being developed with only PS5/Series X and PC in mind considering it started development now of all times
Hey, can I just say I really enjoyed the single player campaign on the Wii remake of Goldeneye? I never played the multi player so don't know how that fared but the one player campaign was fun.
For a second there, I thought the title said JOI. That would have made for a very different article.
I have been wondering what will happen to the Bond IP after the last game hit Wii U to zero applause
@Chlocean Well 007 Legends sucked regardless of platform
It was awfully apparent it was just made to cash in on 50th anniversary hype and the release of Skyfall
Cautiously optimistic about this news.
I grew up playing Goldeneye, Perfect Dark on the N64 and Everything Or Nothing on Gamecube.
Many fond memories associated with these titles.
Okay, IOI- thrill me.
@Krambo42 The last Bond film that came out was in 2015. The next one is coming early 2021. What are you on about?
@0blivion I am aware, but man...those aren’t Bond films as far as I’m concerned. They stopped being enjoyable and special for me after DAD.
@Juga TND was pretty good. Lol. I liked Jonathan Price as the villain.
@Krambo42 I love Dalton, Brosnan and Craig. They’re the trinity of the best Bonds, IMO.
@0blivion Dalton is my favorite. Brosnan is fun. I hate Craig’s films. Not crazy about him in the role, but it’s more just that the films are boring and no fun.
Oh wow, that's a lot of prestige for a Danish game company!
Really hoping to see something innovative, that plays to their strengths as designers at IO
Doesn't have to be a shooter in any traditional sense for what I care.
Aaaaaah this is something interesting
Prediction: bad third party stealth game.
hopefully it isnt absolute garbage like 007 legends is, but i shall reserve judgement until i see more of the game
I'd imagine this'll get a cloud version on the Switch just like Hitman 3.
@Trajan Considering it's the Hitman team working on it it's probably going to be way better than most licensed titles
Hitman is more James-Bond esque than any of the modern James Bond games so this is practically a match made in heaven
I've suddenly become interested in the 'next-gen' consoles.
This will be a streaming game at best on Switch like Hitman 3.
@TheFrenchiestFry Oh, definitely. The zero applause was completely warranted. Made me worried that the property would forever fall into obscurity. I'm glad to see the 007 license getting another chance. The hitman devs could really nail the espionage aspects of Bond.
@TheFrenchiestFry yeah but that’s not why people liked Goldeneye. The 007 series has tried to recapture that for 15 years unsuccessfully. TWINE 64 and Nightfire were pretty good though.
Yea, sorry, but Everything or Nothing was absolutely the best Bond game of all time, and unlike Goldeneye, it still holds up today. Goldeneye was revolutionary, don't mistake me, and I spent many hours back in the 90's playing it over and over again, but it is a dinosaur which has been far surpassed. Just like Mario 64, nostalgia clouds your judgment.
For the setting do you think this need to be set in the Cold War 1950's-1960's like the Ian Fleming books or do you want it to be set in the 21st Century?
