A reported hostage situation at Ubisoft Montreal appears to have been started by a hoax emergency call. Police say "no threat has been identified for now" and have evacuated the building.
This all started local time early afternoon on Friday when news began circulating about police evacuating Montreal’s Mile-End neighbourhood.
Local outlet TVA Nouvelles said Montreal's police service (SPVM) sent in tactical units after a 911 call. At the time of the emergency, Ubisoft employees fled to the rooftop.
Ubisoft Montreal is the studio behind the recently released Assassin's Creed Valhalla and the upcoming title Roller Champions.

What kinda psycho finds this funny. I seriously wonder about some people nowadays.
Someone actually swatted Ubisoft? I get the hate for them, but this is definitely crossing the line.
And this is why nobody wants to identify as a gamer. Absolute bloody nonsense, this is how people get killed. Swatting will never be funny or smart.
Are you supposed to go to the roof in a situation like that? I’m genuinely wondering. I’ve never worked in a tall office building and I feel like I would just be cornering myself if I went to the roof in an emergency
Probably some guy who got mad that his PS4 version of Valhalla doesnt have the same graphics as the ps5 version lol
Throw the book at anyone who pulls this. This is not a prank; it has gotten people killed in the past.
I hope the police trace the call and this idiot gets charged. These types of threats are never ok and they are not funny. Glad no one was hurt.
This is actually awful. I usually make a dumb joke in NLife articles, but this could have gotten someone killed.
There are some terrible people in this world. This should surprise absolutely no one. I remember when arsonists fire bombed Kyoto Animation.
@Heavyarms55 That’s exactly where my mind went when I heard about the original threat. That this turned out to be a stupid hoax is sickening when you look at the tragedy suffered by other creative studios in recent years.
@Nintendudesid Dude, read the room.
Whoever did this needs to be caught and jailed.
Swatting a home is dangerous enough - swatting an office building is terrifying.
@nessisonett Like I said, there are terrible people in this world. Even though this was a hoax, it likely ruined people's day regardless, cost thousands of dollars in emergency services, cost the company money in lost productivity, etc etc.
@MetalMan I don't. In fact I don't get the hate against any gaming company. Dislike? Sure, but not hate. I also think that Ubisoft is one company that isn't nearly as bad as people make it out to be, and I won't mention other companies that from my perspective have worse practices and are adored because I don't want to change the subject and because I don't want people discussing about that.
To anyone that reads this: if you are deranged enough to agree with someone doing this (just to clarify, this isn't directed to the user I replied to, he clearly stated that he doesn't), then you should seek professional help. Risking people's life for fun or because of frustration with a company are both stupid and cruel reasons. Glad to see the rejection and disapproval against this kind of stuff in the comments section.
@ALinkttPresent "Are you supposed to go to the roof in a situation like that?"
Absolutely, if there are some haystacks down below... makes perfect sense to me.
Probably some truth...in that the staff feel like hostages working for Ubisoft
someone obviously a bit upset at the amount bugs in the new AC game lol. About time these parents kicked these grown ups out of the basement to get a job and their own house.
It's scary, especially since there was an incident in Nice within the last few weeks. I hope it wasn't some sort of stupid prank or publicity stunt gone wrong, but I'm glad to hear that it didn't amount to anything and that people are safe.
Remember when 911 wasn't what you called to get militarized police pumped up to go kill someone? Pepperidge Farm remembers.
"Police could not locate any real talent at the video game giant."
I hope none of the employees have PTSD from this incident. Whoever committed this crime has a diseased mind.
On the topic of Ubisoft, I've loved many of Ubisoft's games, particularly STEEP produced by Ubisoft Annecy, so the recent sexual harassment horrors at Ubisoft Montreal really shocked saddened and disappointed me. The problems there were so bad it half made me want Xbox to take over Ubisoft simply to reform the company and give it a healthy female friendly culture. I'm very glad Ubisoft sacked/resigned seemingly most of the worst offenders but obviously there's a long way to go to create a great work culture. So one way or another I hope Ubisoft can fully reform itself and become a truly great company that's an amazing respectful and pleasant place to work for all employees. I just hope this criminal hoax didn't set those efforts back. I feel sorry for the good people at Ubisoft and I hope those people succeed and prosper.
Such horrible crime, I know you may hated UbiSoft but c'mon this is crossing the boundary here.
The fact that people get so attached to games and any kind of media these days that their anger leads them to do things like this. I don't get any pure hate for any video game publisher simply for making a game in a way you don't like or implementing something that will make them more money that isn't mandatory for you to purchase. It's not like the publisher has personally wronged you in some way. In general it shows people don't know how to handle their emotions by doing things like this and can't put their dislike for products into perspective as you can imagine this is someone who is upset by one of their latests games thinking this will be fun revenge.
Police also couldn't find evidence of a decent game in development.
The real emergency is they are holding themselves hostage with garbage games and not expanding on their 'best' ones! We want The Crew 3!!!!!!!!
@Zenszulu I think it would've made more of an impact if they actually held them hostage then they'd back down on a lot of crap they throw out.
@Olddantrucker that is the dumbest thing I have heard.
