Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity is off to an absolutely flying start, shifting more than three million copies in less than a week.
It only released on 20th November, but early UK sales data indicated that the game could well be on a path to huge success, with physical launch sales outdoing Hyrule Warriors: Definitive Edition by 324%. As it turns out, this success has been replicated worldwide, with digital and physical sales totals combining to make up the impressive three million figure.
Koei Tecmo reveals (via Famitsu) that this sales total already makes Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity the best-selling Warriors game of all time, outselling lifetime totals achieved by the likes of Dynasty Warriors, Dragon Quest Warriors, Fire Emblem Warriors, and the previous Hyrule Warriors games in a matter of days.
The link to Breath of the Wild certainly paid off, then. Who knew?

I played the original HW and didn't like it that much. There was something off about it. Now this, this I love
Wow! Good job
Not really into warrior games myself but I am happy for them!
I'm playing throught it now and it's not bad. Not great either, though? Anyway, what amazes me is how it still plays just like Dynasty Warriors 2 did back in the day.
Nice! Hopefully this means they will continue to support, improve and add to it.
It would be nice if it got content drops to tie in with the eventual release of Botw2
To be honest most people likely got this game because it was advertised as a prequel of sorts for BotW. That being said it's been a blast playing it and I've come to actually like the characters both old and new.
Have both HW games and I'm glad to see Age of Calamity being so successful.
Being an official BotW prequel no doubt about it helped sales do this well.
@Ainz same here, Lord Ainz. King of the Great Tomb of Nazarick. The #1 Supreme Being overall.
Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity is a really fun game.
Damn that's impressive, shows what a worldwide mega property and the reception it's sequel / prequel gets you. Other series like One Piece and Dragon Quest never quite had the worldwide appeal BotW did.
Not gonna get it but fab to see a musou game doing this well.
Now if only they could get the Star Wars license like one of the directors wanted...
Nice. I am enjoying it so far. Here’s hoping for another Fire Emblem Warriors game. Gotta feeling Nintendo is gonna be a go to partner from now own.
@BeautyandtheBeer
never been a star wars fan myself, but I would LOVE to see a Star Trek musou game.
@Ryu_Niiyama Fire Emblem Warriors: Fódlan
At least if we are going on the trend. =P
Very impressive!
The game isn't for me but good to see it be a success. Hopefully all who bought it have a great time.
My right thumb is exhausted.
It's a fun game. I really hope they do something to improve the frame-rate in 2 player. I'v played a few worriers games, and this has the worst dips I've seen.
@Natsura lmao been a while since anyone called me that, I should probably retire this username-profile pic combo.
Insane number for this genre. What surprises me is Japan only accounts for 170K of it.
Neat, people must really be enjoying it!
This probably means that people are ready for another Zelda game, BOTW 2 is going to sell ridiculously well when it comes out, may even beat the first game.
This game is truly impressive. Looks great, the gameplay is fun, all the characters are unique and it does what I wanted; it makes me want to play BOTW again and has prepared me for 2.
Shame about the performance though.
Nice! Haven’t bought the game yet (though I really want it) since a little bird told me my fiancé is planning to get me a copy for Christmas...so glad to know it’s doing well, though! I loved what I’ve seen of the demo, so I expect I’ll really enjoy the game once I get to it.
@Natsura I'm not too familiar with Star Trek (been meaning to get into it for so long now) outside the recent 3 movies but aren't they generally not actin focused? Can't see how it would work in the musou formula to be honest.
It's a very good game, glad it's successful. The BotW elements add a lot of depth to the combat which is usually lacking in the Warriors games.
Impressive numbers and shows the power of Zelda and BotW. I myself m loving it, i think the first HW is better but this is still great fun an its great being able to play as these characters finally.
@BeautyandtheBeer there are a ton of times when things have gotten REALLY action heavy.
The Federation - Dominion War for one thing (which btw 1.5 billion people die during that war... at least that number applies to Federation troops), then there is the war between the Federation and the Borg, there is also all of the battles Voyager had with the various Kurzon sects in the Delta Quadrant.
There is also the Klingon armies which themselves have had several wars, some of which that have lasted centuries if not even a thousand years at the longest.
Then the Vulcans (yes the peace loving Vulcans) have had a ton of wars between themselves in their very early years, before Sar'rek founded the Vulcan fundamentals of Logic.
(all of the above mentioned includes a ton of battles in of themselves, they weren't all just one battle and the war was over... they all included at least hundreds if not thousands of little squirmishes between territories. Not counting Voyager, but then again the entire trip from the Delta Quadrant to the Alpha Quadrant, had Voyager fight in little sub-wars between a ton of different races that exist only in the Delta Quadrant))
Then there was the Temporal Cold War, which in of itself spans over 10,000 - 1,000,000 years, because of time travel. It even takes place in the early days of humans exploring space.
So while it might seem like a very peaceful show... there is a crapton of action if you know where to look exactly.
Just goes to show what a good license in the midst of a AAA game drought can do.
Really disappointed that this didn't have online co-op, I get way to bored playing the Warriors games without having friends to chat with while we cut down hordes of bots.
Cool. I'm really enjoying it. Makes me want to play both BotW and the first Hyrule Warriors again.
I wish SEGA would team up with Tecmo Koei and do a Golden Axe musou game. But you know, SEGA...
@Tulio517 i was the same still enjoyed it but this one i love. especially the art style and it feels like a zelda game not a DW mod.
If these studio buyouts are still happening, Koei Tecmo is one I’d love to see Nintendo get their hands on, if they were up for grabs. Along with Sega and Platinum.
@Natsura Okay didn't know any of that and it sounds pretty cool.
I want to see a Xenoblade Warriors game next.
@BeautyandtheBeer Hot damn i was so focused on wanting a Pokemon Warriors game i never thought how incredible and perfect a Star Wars one could be.
Fully deserved, I think it's the best zelda spin off game and the second best warriors spin off game, second to dragon quest heroes
@MS7000 as long as I can play as The Immaculate One, that would be amazing. (Even if I can’t I would love more time with the 3H characters) That being said I feel like FE3H has done a great job in making the playing field feel like it’s a war rather than a specialized team running a skirmish.
All these people naming what they want as a next warriors game such as pokemon and xenoblade. Why not just have a smash bros warriors game that has them all in
Nice to hear, I think I prefer the first Hyrule warriors, but age of calamity is pretty good as well.
Wow. Preordered it ages ago via Shopto.net but yet to arrive, getting a bit worried now.
I want this game but I'm still holding off for now. I don't know if I want to go through this game and then having to start all over again when they release a definitive edition on another console or something, with that in mind I'd like to get this at a lower price, especially if they're gonna release DLC, which, let's be real, is going to happen.
That's two 3 million selling Koei Tecmo games on Switch now. Fire Emblem: Three Houses and now Hyrule Warriors.
As someone who played hw on the wiiu and again on 3ds and got bored of the games, should i give this new one a chance?
@NGNYS "So it's already the best selling third-party (???) game on Switch?"
If this game count as third-party then so should Pokemon and Smash.
Hyrule Warriors Age of Calamity had one of the biggest launches ever for a Switch game. On the top of my head, the only titles with a bigger launch sales were Animal Crossing, both Pokemon titles, Smash Ultimate, Mario Odyssey, and Mario 3D All-Stars.
That’s incredible. It’s a fun game with a lot to do, and the BoTW elements make the combat fun as well. If you can aim electricity into a body of water to shock goes, you can do it in this game too.
Age of Calamity may also be the biggest or 2nd biggest Zelda launch of all time. Ocarina of Time on N64 may have had a bigger launch back in 1998 as its launch sales in the US and Japan were massive, but data in other regions (i.e. Europe) is impossible to come by so no definitive conclusion can be drawn. (Of course, it should be noted that Twilight Princess and Breath of the Wild were limited in launch sales because they were launch titles for new hardware.)
Breath of the Wild 2 will be gigantic: if it reviews as anywhere near as well as the first, it will likely become the biggest Nintendo launch ever outside of Pokémon and Animal Crossing New Horizons.
@westman98 B-b-but charizardemperor said everyone online thinks the game sucks! How could he be wrong?!
I managed to enjoy the original Hyrule Warriors on Wii U and 3DS, because I've been a Zelda fan since childhood, my (brother's) first Game Boy and Link's Awakening (together with Tetris, Talespin, Aladdin, Dragon Heart,... And I think that's about it) were my introduction to videogames. I even learned both English and French from playing games before I had it in school. Maybe I should play some games in Spanish now...
Back on topic: I just ordered this one where I found it the cheapest physically, because I truly enjoyed the demo (much more than the original game despite it being all fan service) and was really getting into it when it abruptly ended. Or should I say, when the "free to play" version ran into an unbreakable pay wall just when the hype train was at full speed?
In one week this has sold more copies than many Exclusive Xbox titles. Let that sink in.
@Dr_Lugae
3H is still a Nintendo/Intelligent Systems game. KT just assisted with coding. I would hesitate to call it a "KT" game.
In the end, unless legs are absolutely terrible, it seems like this game was a suitable holiday title for Switch with these kind of sales.
I was skeptical at first, but really love the arcade style gameplay but with Zelda characters. The handheld experience is definitely enjoyable. You can tell a lot of work and effort was made into making this.
Can’t wait for Pikmin Warriors ....... /s
@fafonio Hmmm. Fzero Warriors will be better
@nkarafo it makes me cry thinking that could be the only way we could finally get another Fzero game. What is Nintendo thinking?
That's really impressive. 3M in less than a week? And I remember some folks on here scoffing at the thought that this would be Nintendo's holiday game.
Impressive for a niche game. I bougth it on day 1.
If they make another Zelda Warriors game, it'd be great to focus on the backstory to Ocarina of Time.
@fafonio
Pikmin Warriors would be hilarious if you're fighting against them... sending millions of them flying with a single swipe... 😆
3 million copies in about 4 days?!
At this rate, I'd wager that this will outsell all other Warriors games to date combined. I doubt that most of them have even sold half a million copies each (though such sales figures are nothing to sneeze at either).
@Silly_G "At this rate, I'd wager that this will outsell all other Warriors games to date combined. I doubt that most of them have even sold half a million copies each"
Maybe not, but Koei have made 52 of these games so accumulated sales are probably over 15 million.
@Kanbolara 52 and they needed Nintendo to improve their still tired formula? Wow...
Wasn't expecting Age of Calamity to perform so well but glad. I'm hoping they patch up the performance. In the meantime I still have Fire Emblem Warriors to play.
@AmplifyMJ Hope you get it soon. I pre-ordered it too, for my son as a Christmas present, only arrived today (Tuesday 24th) even though it was sent on Thursday 19th. It came by Royal Mail which is pretty unpredictable at the moment...
Strongly disliked Hyrule Warriors, to the point where I almost didn't pick up Age of Calamity. I'm glad my gaming OCD took hold in this particular case; it's easily my favorite Warriors game ever.
It works well as a BOTW offshoot.
Reflect guardian beams with shields? You can do that.
Parry Lynel attacks? You can do that too
Perfect dodge and Flurry rush? Try it.
Shock or freeze the water? Yep.
What makes this combat differ is the weakpoint gauge and obviously, the lack of weapon durability. The window of opportunity is considerably narrow for some of them but you know what? That makes doing them absolutely worth it.
@antonvaltaz thanks for the reply, mine is also for my son for Christmas. That reassures me a little bit if you got yours yesterday. I got Pikmin3 from them, again for my son, and it arrived ok, so hopefully AOC will arrive too!
I'm happy for the people that enjoy this type of game.
Personally, I think I had my fill after playing the opening battle from the demo.
@IronMan30 The Legend of Zelda is not very popular in Japan.
Too bad the game had misleading advertising. This was certainly not prequel Nintendo said it would be.
Edit: I like the game a lot right now, the best difficulty setting is hard, like on Wii U for Hyrule Warriors, very hard is to tiresome with no upgraded characters, better done if one has more levels, normal is too easy. Some maps in the beginning I really disliked, midgame was great though for now, Hyrule Warriors remains my favourite, but this game is awesome too. One thing bugs me though is the option to offer something to the "Goddess" of Hyrule. I'm here to have fun not to engage in a made up religion and I already have a God and his son is Jesus Christ.
@Moonlessky
This game has less of the annoying grindy, repetitive aspects that the first one had. Rather than have an Adventure Map, you have these side missions within the main game itself. Quite a lot out there with unique objectives.
In terms of performance, the frame rate is the same as the Wii U and New 3DS versions of the first HW, but the dips in the frame rate only become major once you jump into co-op.
If you're looking for some insane storytelling (a lot more in-depth than BotW) and an insane soundtrack, you should definitely try this game.
