Pokémon Sword and Shield's second piece of DLC, The Crown Tundra, is now available on the Nintendo Switch.
As previously noted, this extra content includes a new adventure, the chance to catch legendary pocket monsters from past generations, new Pokémon, a new Galarian Star Tournament, a new way to battle and much more.
The Crown Tundra is the second area you’ll be able to visit with your Expansion Pass. See for yourself this vast landscape, with its drifts of glittering snow! In this frigid area with jagged, snowy mountains, people have settled in a small, tight-knit community.
Early in your adventures here, a man named Peony will appoint you as the leader of his exploration team in the Crown Tundra. You’ll be tasked with investigating the reaches of this frozen land—including the depths of a Pokémon Den, something you’ve so far been able to glimpse only during Max Raid Battles!
What’s more, it seems many Legendary Pokémon make the Crown Tundra their home.
This latest update will bump your game up to version 1.3.0. Here are the full patch notes, courtesy of Nintendo UK:

Pikachu, use mommy's credit card!
I'll try it tomorrow after work.
Still annoyed that the Pokémon weren't there to begin with. The fact that they are coming in now shows they could have done it.
That's just me though, I hope people who buy it enjoy the DLC.
I still have to buy the pass It sucks I have to pay even more money for pokemon that should have been in the game, I think I may pick it up on sale I just don't have the money right now but I'm going to get it at some point.
Before this comment section gets ugly I just want to say that even with an open mind; ignoring all the salt and anger leading up to sw/sh’s release I still found it a major disappointment. The last dlc I thought was meh(the small surprise was nice but aside from that it wasn’t something that I would consider Memorable this year..) I hope this second one will change my mind. Going in this one with another open mind, and honestly from what they’ve shown it looks good, so I hope I can find some enjoyment out of it. I hope anyone that also plans on playing it soon gets the same!
@Snatcher You can trade with other players to get the cut pokémon but in my opinion that is tedious but it's still possible to get some without buying the DLC.
@Snatcher you don't need the dlc for the returning pokemons. Trade/transfer are all valid ways of getting them as with older games. Iirc you can even get them in surprise trades. And that's not mentioning using pokemon home on your phone to access the GTS(which you can with the free account iirc. You're just limited to having a single box and having only one pokemon at once you can put in the GTS instead of three of a paid account and similarly have a smaller amount of active/pending wonder trades possible than paid)
You just can't catch them with a pokeball yourself in the base game.
Since all that's DLC exclusive are the new Wild Areas that are Isle of Armor+Crown Tundra
@Tourtus I know but I just kinda feel left out if I don't have the dlc.
Might get later. Probably bday or christmas
Nice. Looking forward to playing this. I thoroughly enjoyed the base game and the Isle of Armor was was good dlc.
I can't believe the lack of interest I have in this game considering that I have been in love with the franchise since the beginning. I'll have my share of monster collecting in Monster Hunter Stories 2 and maybe Rune Factory 5 if it's similar to 4 in that regard. I'm also loving the Digimon Cyber Sleuth Collection.
I'll try it out eventually. Lots on my plate right now.
@Northwind "it has been literally months since I've heard anyone voice a legitimate criticism that's novel and hasn't been repeated thousands of times before."
Well as long as Game freak continues to ignore the criticisms, they are going to keep being brought up. That's just how it is.
@Kalmaro it’s not that deep you don’t even need the dlc to get the pokemon guy
@TexanSansei You can make multiple files with one game card/digital copy?
Definitely getting this after clearing out some of my backlog.
@Northwind Of all the things that need novelty to stay relevant, criticism isn't one. In fact, if people repeat over and over the same points, chances are that there's at least something to consider about them. I also don't see it as "beating a dead horse", it's simply keeping an opinion because the concerns haven't been addressed and as long as I care for this franchise I'll keep repeating them. I also voted with my wallet by not buying this entry which is the most important thing to do. If I saw it as "beating a dead horse" then that would mean I'm giving up on the franchise.
I don't think that they are bad games since as long as they keep one of the best rpg mechanics invented they kind of have the gameplay aspect covered. No, much worse since they are veterans of a franchise that used to be one of the best things every generation: they are mediocre and forgettable. They clearly lack passion and quality and I'm baffled that the people that love the franchise can't see that, even if I'm aware of people having different opinions. Yes, it's still Pokemon and enjoyable to some degree, but so mediocre in comparison to previous entries and what other beloved franchises are doing. It's basing all of it's success in just being Pokemon while the gaming market is really fierce and passionate and many games are trying to shine. I didn't expect a reinvention since as I said I love the core gameplay, it's simply a shallow entry that didn't use the power of the Switch and the feedback to actually offer something that would make the Pokemon universe more alive. Instead it's more linear and bland looking compared to other games. Exploration and discovery are worse despite of being able to offer bigger, open areas which is ridiculous in a Pokemon game.
Anyway, sorry for the long rant. I think that while these games ended up being successful, people may not be as forgiving with the next entry if they don't do something more adecuate to the Switch. If not, and if people simply prefer to support it no matter how bland and cheap their games become, then I guess that I might walk away from the franchise after all of these years. Just for anyone that might suggest this: I'm not tired of Pokemon and I didn't outgrow it, I just ended up feeling massive disappointment after seen what they offered and no, returning to play the entries that I enjoy doesn't solve my concern for the direction of a franchise I deeply love.
For everyone crying about missing PM did you have issue with Gen 3 what required R/S, Emerald and Fire Red/Leaf Green if you wanted to have them all. Gamefreak have been doing this since Gen 2, its funny how people are more happy to pay full price for another game rather buying DLC what's 100% new content and is cheaper then a full game.
@Camari Someone does, either you buy the DLC or you have to hope someone else who did is willing to share what they got so you can get Pokémon that we could have had earlier.
@WallyWest There was a massive jump in gameplay, character design and everything between 2 and 3,wbich was what we were promised when they told us we would not get everything in SwSh. That turned out to be a lie and thus, people are upset. Then they turned around and are selling Pokémon to us that they could have put in and are making you also pay to transfer Pokémon ymto their bank and sit there in the hope you can use them later if they don't get into SwSh.
@Kalmaro You had to buy Emerald and FR/LG if you wanted a complete Dex in R/S, that was far worse as it required you to buy other games. In fact you need another game to have a complete Dex in one because version exclusives. Honestly anyone who moans about this DLC while taking no issue with past stuff are hypocrites. Treat the DLC as the 3rd game because its exactly that but cheaper and all new content.
I'm gonna play it and judge for myself. I already know what others are gonna say.
Meh...not very excited...for some reason. I guess l lost interest in the game too long ago.
@roy130390 same I loved every Pokémon before this. Just could not get into this Pokémon game.
i am downloading right now, i can't wait
How many Pokèmon you guys caught so far after update? I know there gotta be a crazy Pokèmon catcher right now!
@Northwind I never said that people don't enjoy them in a genuine way, I said that I'm surprised that people feel that way about them when they look so low quality and bland specially if they played many of the previous entries each generation. That's what's baffles me, but again, I'm aware of different opinions so there's no point in me describing in detail why I feel that way since I'm not trying to change your mind about that. You already played it and made up your mind so it would be dumb of me to say that you didn't enjoy it if you said otherwise. I even mentioned that they will be enjoyable as long as they keep the core gameplay, which is one of the best in the rpg genre. Besides, that wasn't the point. I adressed why valid complaints have nothing to do with novelty (on the contrary, chances are the most valid will be repeated constantly) and why "beating a dead horse" as you call it will keep on happening and how is that actually a good thing if the people doing it share my perspective, since it means that they still care for the franchise and believe in improvement and change.
Time to hop back in this weekend!
@Tourtus Yes, one per Switch account.
So I can confirm that the Honen Starters are in the Crown Tundra, my first Raid in the new area I ran into a Combusken on my way to facing Suicene.
Looking forward to playing these when the full cartridge version releases in a couple of weeks.
Oh boy here we go again.
@roy130390 I didn't bother finishing the base game. I found it so lazy and boring that it wasn't worth my time to finish it.
Excited to boot this up later! I enjoyed Isle of Armour and this one looks to be even better. I still have Platinum, Soul Silver and both Black 1 and 2 sitting here waiting too. After the dlc I’ll probably by itching to start one of those.
I can’t stop doing the new raids. I’m 5 minutes into the story and 4 hours later no further forward.
With Pokémon GO!, Splatoon and Animal Crossing events all happening plus it’s gonna be 34 degrees this weekend I’m thinking I’ll just have to not sleep. 😅
I wonder what
Fixed a number of issues so that gameplay is more enjoyable.
This is no different than what they do with any other pokemon game.red, blue then yellow.sun and moon ultra sun and ultra moon.black, white black and white 2.they do this with every pokemon game so why are people being babies about it now lol grow up
They added all legendaries, but I question why they added only a FEW mythical pokemon and not all of them (a bit sad my favorite one didn't make it)
@WallyWest I get that you had to buy another cartridge to get other Pokémon, the only reason I was never upself then was because Ru/Sa was such a large jump that it made sense that it wasn't a big deal not everything was brought over.
@Northwind The main criticisms for this game stem from one thing, they lied.
I could care less they we got less Pokémon if it meant we were getting a better game like they promised. I remember them saying at one time that Pokémon were cut to improve animations.
That would have been amazing if true, the animations in Pokémon have been stiff for a while. Turns out, that wasn't true. Stuff like that is why I'm unhappy with the game, not just because some stuff is missing.
@Northwind Well they easily could have just added the content as free DLC since they didn't deliver on their previous promises. The entire reason we didn't get Pokémon appears to have been false and we're getting them anyway. They need to acknowledge that they were wrong and apologize. That would go a long way into building back good will with the people who had criticisms.
Also, you're assuming a lot if you think I'm harboring any strong options towards this. I don't hate the developers, I just don't like what they did, which is hardly an unhealthy position. There's nothing wrong with holding an option that someone is wrong. It's all about how you act on it.
So... judging by the advertising, the expansion consists of just fighting a bunch of legendaries and fighting the end game tournament again?
...I mean I know that's probably wrong but tbh I still don't even know what the content in this is or if it's worth it.
I do hate the raid of this sorry its kinda weird I like to use my pokemon..
Can't wait to play it.
@Northwind You keep saying I didn't say what they could do now, an apology would be something they could do now, I just know they won't.
They could also just refund DLC purchases and give the DLC for free, that would be amazing.
And yeah, I'm not mad at all, the fact that this happened like, a year ago doesn't mean I suddenly will change my mind, they still did wrong.
@Northwind "I’m just wondering why if, as you (and, presumably, others) claim, you’re not mad and this is not still eating at you-"
Let me stop you right there, I never said it wasn't still eating at me, just that I'm not mad. It's possible to be bugged by something and not be angry.
Then they make articles and ask for input, so I give my input on how I feel the DLC was handled. That's it.
@Snatcher In this case it’s worth it!
I like this DLC approach much better than what they did before with releasing Ultra versions of the games. Forcing you to pay full retail again for the same games with few new additions and fixes.
Now you can just continue playing the same game, with same character and progress and explore the new areas and missions.
I really enjoyed Isle of Armor and enjoying Crown Tundra even more.
@Jeronan I might give it a shoot.
