As regular readers will know, we've recently started publishing launch day polls for Nintendo's big releases, all in the hopes of seeing just how popular each title is amongst our community. Super Mario 3D All-Stars is out today, and this one is perhaps the most intriguing release of our series so far.
Throwing three of Mario's best ever adventures into one package on a seriously popular console was always going to sell well, but launch day purchases for this particular title may well have been affected by Nintendo's baffling decision to launch the game as a limited-time release.
As you may know, Nintendo has said that Super Mario 3D All-Stars will only be on sale until the end of March 2021 (so that's six months on sale in total), quite possibly causing fans to panic buy the title ASAP before the thing sells out for good.
Today, then, you'll find two questions in our poll. The usual 'are you getting it?' is there, but you're also welcome to have your say on whether or not the game's limited availability has had an impact on your decision. Have at it, and feel free to expand upon your answers in the comments:

I thought about it but in the end decided against it, Mario 64 looks horrible not in widescreen, Sunshine is hit and miss and I already played Galaxy back in the Wii days.
Although I don’t want to encourage Nintendo to make cash-grabs like this, i really want to play Galaxy again.
@Apportal I wouldn’t get this no matter the price if Galaxy wasn’t here. I’m pretty sure 64 is gonna come to NSO and I’ve never really cared for sunshine so they’re both just extras to me.

These games look THAT good I instantly thought of lists of N64, GameCube and Wii titles I want to see on Switch. They look incredible finally getting these retro classics in true HD

Got my copy off Amazon. Then they go and drop the price by £5 this morning and refuse to match their own price saying I have to cancel the order/ return it and order a new copy at the cheaper price!

I couldn't be less excited for it but I'm getting a physical copy anyway just due to it being a limited release. I'd rather just buy it then sell it later if I change my mind for whatever reason than not buy it now and not have the option later.
I was very excited about the announcement, and the limited availability pushed me in to preordering it physically... waiting for a text from my wife to tell me it’s arrived 😊
Always wanted to see Sunshine in HD. An excuse to play SM64 again is nice. Plus, my TV upconverts to 3D, so I might give that a whirl.
These are some of my all-time favorite games. Each of these games is why I still play Nintendo after 35 years. I think the complaints are overblown. I highly doubt this is the last time these games will be made available. This is just a limited collection. Let's see what Nintendo actually does after March before cursing them.
The limited release is kinda lame. I’ll be lucky to overpay for a copy by the time I can afford it, IF I can find it.

@Ajent Yeah I saw and was pissed. I called them and couldn't get £5 refund but they gave me £5 credit.
The opportunity to play Sunshine in HD with normalised camera controls, on a portable system no less, was too good to refuse. The fact that Galaxy and 64 are there in HD and portable too is just a bonus.
It being a limited release does increase its desirability for a physical collector like me.
I'm playing it, and loving it. Mario 64 looks great. But Galaxy is a dream come true. Used to hate the wrist shaking on wii. Never finished the game. It's amazing to finally have it in a non-gimmick version, and it looks great.
It's the lack of effort that put me off.
Got it yesterday actually. First time ever getting a game early.
I had never considered buying it, since Mario is not really my jam. But all the hype right now got me fired up together with learning that Sunshine has a carribean-esk setting. Never played any of them as well.
But I wait till the hype is over and see if the flame of interest is still burning when I am alone in my head.
Missed the option "I already have it" and I would have gotten it day one regardless of the availability.

My copy should be there when I get home today. The "limited" ordeal definitely swayed my decision to preorder. Although Galaxy 2 wasn't included, I am hoping that owning a copy of the collection now will at least give way to a discount (or 2) in the future.
Maybe the "limited" edition is tied to those My Nintendo physical rewards and will be re-released to the e-shop once that is over.

Never played Sunshine and it’s been ages since my last Galaxy playthrough, probably 9 years or so. Loving them all so far.
I would've waited if it wasn't for the limited physical release, but I decided to preorder it as I generally prefer physical and it'd be neat to have the cartridge.
Plus, I wanted to experience the 3 3D Mario games I haven't ever played, and while I'd be surprised if I didn't like 64 or Sunshine, I can at least count on Galaxy to be a great time

I feel like the Poll doesn't accurately describe my situation. I have brought a physical copy, but only for collection purposes. I have no intention of opening it and only brought it due to possible availability issues.
I am still very much on the fence. On one hand, I love these games. On the other hand, I have already played them to death on their original consoles.
Maybe I will toss it on my Christmas list. If I get it, cool. If not, no big deal.

My guess in that these will be the kickoff games for N64, Gamecube, and Wii on the Switch online. That said, I already bought the collection and hope it arrives soon...

I got it, arrived in the post today, which is great! I'll play each of them for a bit, see what they are like and then, up on the shelf.
I use Dolphin on my PC. I'm pretty sure sunshine and galaxy look a billion times better on that.

I'm interested in checking out 64 and Sunshine, and I'm willing to try Galaxy again. It never really clicked for me.
I pre-ordered but I still think that Nintendo could and should have done much better. For starters, 60fps (Super Mario 64 and Super Mario Sunshine), widescreen (Super Mario 64) and Super Mario Galaxy 2 as an unlockable. I'm disappointed in Nintendo.
I got my copy yesterday. I'm yet to play any of the games but i'm just glad i have it to add to my collection.
The only one I haven't played is Sunshine and I own it on GC and have my Wii set up for whenever I want to. Still have Galaxy on Wii and 64 DS on Wii U VC. No need for this at all. Would have if they had done more work.
I preordered and will stash aside for my daughters Christmas, she loves odyssey and some of my best gaming memories ever are playing coop with her. Letsa go!

Mario 64 with improved visuals would’ve been great. Hell, even a port of 64 ds would’ve been nice.
But just an up Rez and texture changes doesn’t really appeal.

I'm getting it mostly to play Sunshine again. My 8yo recently got a switch lite for her birthday and has become enthralled with the Spyro trilogy so she'll like this too. So overall I'll get my money's worth.

This was always going to be an automatic buy for me. I guess all the cool kids are trashing it now, but to me this easily worth the money. I actually own all the games in it, but to have them on the Switch is a video game dream.

Nope, not after Nintendolife helpfully pointed out Nintendo reversed the camera controls in Sunshine but didn’t provide an invert option.
It’s 2020. Most games don’t even have remappable buttons (which is wrong) but at least they have an invert-y option.
When they said "limited" in the direct, I went to Best Buy's site to pre-order after the direct finished. I would have bought day one anyway, though.
Bought it on the eShop, had it preloaded and it's waiting to played.
Only one of these games is worth it and it still plays in 4:3
Decided to skip the purchase after I ended up replaying Sunshine on gamecube last week, which was the game I wanted the most to replay (Galaxy controls on Switch sounds unappeling to me and Mario 64 is the least interesting of the pack cause of the VC viability).
That said, I hate to admit that the limited tactic is unfairly effective, I have no reason to buy the game now, yet I'm tempted and I may end up buying it eventually just to avoid any regret later.
The limited availability has made me buy the game twice (physical and digital)
But since it will be the first time I will experience Sunshine and Galaxy it was an instant day one buy for me.

I am very excited to buy this. However, if it weren’t for the limited release, I probably would have waited for a sale or a used copy.
I pre-ordered one copy. Hopefully it is available enough to where scalpers don’t prosper. I feel bad for people that had to pay double or more for the NES Mini.
I never played or finished any of these games, so obviously it's a day one purchase for me. I pre-ordered and am patiently waiting for the collection's arrival. Since I live in Argentina, the cartridge has to cross the Andes, dive into the River Plate, and conclude with an epic fight against Playstation 4 discs above speedboats on the Paraná Delta. It'll hopefully arrive to my apartment by the 30th.
Definitely buying, definitely not day one, but already trying to calculate a fitting saving strategy for the eventual March purchase (unless something else factors in). Yes, I might have aimed for it later otherwise since my wishlist has priorities above Mario franchise (you're reading the comment of a Switch owner who still doesn't have SMO and MK8D in 2020😱😆), but there's no questioning the eventual purchase itself for me.

My wife preordered a copy for me, Sunshine is one of my favorite games
Picking up my pre-order at my local GameStop here in the U.S. today when they open at noon. We made sure with the management in person last week that they were holding the pre-ordered / paid-for copies in the back so they can make sure to fulfill those customers on day one.
I purchased it earlier than I would because I'm a huge Super Mario fan. However, and this is a big however, I don't recommend paying full price for this. Nintendo was really lazy with this package - you can get a much better performance unofficially with emulation.
On the Pro side of things, Galaxy was a well done remaster, the controller works nicely, it runs in 60fps and graphics/animation/sound are all great. Odyssey is still leagues ahead, but Galaxy was a well done remaster anyway.
These are 3 amazing games, so even without proper improvements, they're worth playing. But if you have them already, stick to what you have IMO.
@Classic603 good to know man.. it will be my first time on sunshine! if it's more or less 64 level , im fine.. my expectations are on galaxy since I looved odyssey and some ppl say they are the same level! But i can't deny that i'm sad with the lack of galaxy 2.. ;(

Got the game this morning, I've only played Mario 64 but I'm not happy with how they've changed the default controls (inverting the left/right of the camera and inverting the y-axis for first person and cannon aiming) and not put any option in to revert it to normal.
Mario's movement seems to be a bit twitchy on the analogue stick, almost like they haven't properly emulated the linear progression of the original N64 analogue stick. I can adapt to that, but not so much the camera change.
Mario 64 also runs with ugly borders (top and bottom, the 4:3 is another issue), which is odd as its supposed to be 720p which is native for the Switch screen. So it's either sub-720p or the image is being shrunk down for some reason.
Pre ordered it from Walmart the day it went live. My 15 year old son and I are going to play it once it arrives. Love to see him have so much excitement for the games I also played when I was his age.

Not today. I don't have spare fun money at present. If I see it in a store at some point while its available I'll grab it. If its not, it's no biggie. There are games that are higher priority on our wishlist. And yes, the limited availability has put me off. This tactic has bitten Nintendo at least twice in the rear before for issuing non-limited special editions.
Some people are complaining about limited time... But the scope of a limited is just this... To be available for a limited time or limited pieces. When I see some "limited edition" that are available 3 years after launch...
Picked it up from Target this morning. I didn't want a repeat of the NES Classic so I made sure to get there before 9 am. Unlike the NES Classic, they had plenty of copies, though to be fair I don't know if that'll last.

I ordered the game as a Birthday gift for me... The only bad thing is my Birthday was yesterday and the game came out today so I won't be able to open it on my b-day. Still hyped tho!

Just got back from Best Buy with my reserved copy. I was the first one to pull into the lot, but the 5th one to get out of the car and stand in line like cattle. It seems like I didn’t need to be quite that persistent to beat out the competition because it really was reserved in this case. It actually had my name printed on a sticker, so the pre orders were more locked in than expected. I just didn’t want to chance a “should have got here sooner” situation.
Still not too fond of the limited release nature of it, though. I may have gone digital if not for that but it seemed a little more solid to get an actual cart if they’re going to play it that way. So now I’m off to dip into the thing. I’ll probably go a little ways into each and switch it up back and forth. I can’t imagine waiting to try the others while doing complete playthroughs one at a time.

@rex_rex Galaxy 2 was excluded for costs. Including it and selling it for $60 wouldn’t be profitable (and they didn’t want to price it at $80). These four games would be about $65 on the VC. Even lowering that value to just the value of the ROMs, they need to add in the costs of getting these games working on the Switch (the Wii U had the benefit of being backwards compatible with the Wii and Sunshine was never on the VC).
Hopefully they have future plans for SMG2.

Getting my copy today and the limited availability didn't influence my decision at all, it was going to be a day one buy no matter what. 64 and Galaxy are two of my favorite platformers ever made. Never cared much for Super Mario Sunshine the two previous times I played it but last time I played it was around 2005, maybe I'll like it more now.
I typically wait on most retail releases in hopes of a sale down the line since I have plenty to play. However, in this case, it'll have to be soon.
I would have gotten this anyway, but I still don't approve of this "limited time" release schedule. Physical is somewhat understandable, but also removing access to the digital version is still baffling. And yes, I already know about the theories floating around.
I have never played two of these games so I am all in, but I'll be grabbing digitally maybe next month. I have too much I am playing at the moment.
I'm extremely disappointed today, because my copy never turned up. So fed up with having to rely on the ineptitude of postal services, even before the pandemic they were terrible, now they're more so.
I should have just made myself some time to pick it up from a store, so I can only blame myself.

The limited production had zero impact on me. I'm all digital and buy most Nintendo-developed games day one anyway.
I probably would have waited, but this was a definite buy for me at some point. All this did was accelerate the clock.
That said, I do feel a little queasy about supporting Nintendo on yet another time-limited release. It was annoying with the "Classic" consoles. It is extremely frustrating with the physical for this. It is downright wrong for the digital release.

I wish we could make Nintendo understand people need camera control options, or at bare minimum, stick with what you invented and used for the first 15+ years of 3D gaming!
Whew I'm not sure how to feel about this game tbh. It just seems so...rushed. Between this and Pokémon, etc. it's kinda slowed down my 1st party intake lately, which I guess is good for the indie scene since that has taken up more of my recent gaming time.
@Crimson_Ridley It's honestly why I hate getting stuff like video games (as a pre-order) through the mail, esp since I've had mail come up missing before for a number of reasons. As for clothes, shoes, etc., you could get the wrong size by accident or incompetence, ya di da.
I'm a walk-in type person; I'd rather go out to the store if I want something.

These poll results and this sentiment present here despite all the facts regarding this release are a living proof that, ultimately, the game companies are only half to blame for the current state of the industry. Maybe even less than a half.

Honest question for everyone. If the Wii Metroid Prime Trilogy was ported over in a similar fashion as Galaxy 1, would you pay $60 for it?
I never beat 64 or Galaxy, so it's worth it for me. I also never had a GameCube, so I have never played Sunshine. I usually wait for sales, but given the limited release window and amount I have left to explore in these games, I just went for it.

This collection is making me, one of the most blindly obedient Nintendo fanboys, start to question my allegiances... really feels crappy to be ignored/forgotten by my favorite game developer...
(I’m referencing the shift to inverted controls... yes, originally the way people play now was called inverted and “inverted” was standard. It’s in the menu of older games, sorry, no source rn.)
If it were only $30 USD and came with extras (like the Wii rerelease of SMAS), then I would seriously consider it. Collectibles such as soundtrack CDs and concept art booklets definitely help to sweeten the deal.
@Tandy255 If it was just emulated with a higher resolution like SM3DAS, and not a native port or remake like WWHD or TPHD, Nintendo should not charge more than $40 USD for it. Paying more than that would be a ripoff.

I'm torn. On the one hand, Mario games are generally great. On the other hand, I'm not the biggest fan of 3D Mario (never beat a single one) and the limited availability has me thinking I'll be scrambling to buy a game I don't 100% want, and the forced control flip in Sunshine isn't helping either. I'll probably end up passing on it.
I guess I’ll get it. I preordered on amazon on the 8th but there’s no clear date in when it’ll ship. The stores near me didn’t receive any today. I’m sure we’ll get a chance later but it’s still annoying that it’s so limited right now.

@Clammy I agree. I would probably pay $40 to play Metroid Prime Trilogy on the Switch with updated controls. I would pay double that for a full HD remake. 😉
We shall see what Nintendo will do. At least the success of 3D All Stars shows how much people want older games to be brought back.
It's a collection of three very notable games that as official releases, have never looked better. The text and other assets have been updated so that they don't look janky. Pick it up or don't. I've been annoyed with NoA's treatment of it's North American fan base for some time now. The really do not only take us for granted, but also have taken advantage of our love and support of the company.
But I really don't think this is one of those cases. If this wasn't part of the whole Mario 35th celebration, people wouldn't be complaining nearly as much. It's a solid value. The games look and play great. Could Nintendo have done more? Sure. Did they need to? Obviously not. Just look at the sales so far. And outside of scalper degenerates, most of the purchases are very happy gamers either enjoying a wonderful burst of nostalgia or even more exciting, experiencing these legendary games for the first time... and in their best form so far.
Yes... Nintendo half-assed this a bit. But nothing that they did (or didn't do) has affected these games or the fun they represent, so I'm not sure what the fuss in about.
After this is delisted, they'll either have these for individual purchase, weave them into the Nintendo Online Game Library or release a deluxe edition... maybe with Galaxy 2 included. Or maybe Galaxy 2 will be a full HD remake. Who knows? Until then, I'm going to enjoy these classics.
Also, I pre ordered through Walmart and got three sheets of '3D' Stickers; one for each game. There was also a little card with brief blurbs about each game. So if you wanted something a little extra, there's that.
Day one for me. SM64 is exactly what I wanted, a higher res version of the original as it was, 16:9 or any of the popular "fixes" are unnecessary IMO. Galaxy looks perfect to me, and more importantly, Sunshine alone is worth the price of admission for me. Been dying to be able to play it in a modern display, and with the camera "corrected".
Arrived today, played a bit of Sunshine before but not the others, so will get my money’s worth then sell it and get my money’s worth again.

I've been thinking about it all morning but i've ultimately decided to not get it. I was super excited to replay 64 but they just did it dirty. I don't really feel like replaying Galaxy again so meh. I wouldn't mind playing Sunshine but not for the price.

Went to Target this afternoon and got my copy. The display was completely full and they were keeping copies behind the cash register. Don't know how quickly it will sell, but I think there are probably more copies than what people think.
I've bought it, will play it and sell it. In another 15 years on the 50th anniversary I'll pick up the 8k version.

Galaxy is unreal in HD. Sunshine is OK, really welcoming the HD widescreen. 64 is appalling. If they had at least made it widescreen.. like why not. But brings back great memories.

Sometimes in Hong Kong, on the day something releases, it is cheaper than retail. As this game is unlikely to go on sale digitally and scalpers are going to push up the price of physicals, especially in Hong Kong, where all shops act as scalpers on hard to find products, i got it yesterday for 358hkd which is about 46usd or 36gbp. If the only option was to pay 60usd, I would have skipped the game entirely.
@Andymad I already mentioned it in another comment, but I simply couldn't stop play after starting the original version.
My idea was just to play a shine or two to hype myself toward the HD release, but once I started I just wanted to play more and more until I got to defeat Bowser.
Yap, the plan to hype me for the release of the collection ended up ruining that hype instead, I blame it on how addictive Mario's platformers are.
@Cow_Bug I saw it on the shelves in my local Tesco last night for £45 and just felt zero enthusiasm for it.
I’m not fussed about 64 - I’ve played the DS remake several times, and still have the cartridge - but the other two games make the collection a must-own for me. I’ve never played Sunshine, so I’m excited to finally get to sink my teeth into it, and Galaxy is a favourite of mine that I never actually completed, since I was rubbish at platformers and at finishing games in general when I was a kid, so it’ll be great to finally go for that 100%!
Besides, I’m really excited to finally introduce my fiancé - who only became a Nintendo fan very recently after getting a Switch of his own to play with me - to the masterpiece that is Galaxy. So all in all, Galaxy and Sunshine provide more than enough value for me.
I bought it and i'm mostly enjoying it, but i'm really angry they un-inverted the aiming controls.
Would have bought it anyway day one. Pre-ordered it anyway no matter what the situation. I have it and it is good.
Of course I got it! Bit of a cash grab, but hey, people begged to pay a premium price for these games in their unaltered states for 3 years, so careful what you wish for lol.
Wanna see something really horrid? Theres a demo out for Crash 4, BUT you have to buy the game to play it. What's worse, the game sucks! I'll take this Mario deal any day over that
@Ajent Amazon has been hot garbage since at least the beginning of the pandemic, but actually longer. I’ll order from 2 or 3 other online stores before I’ll check Amazon as my absolutely my last stop

as a collection, this is pretty lazy and uninspired on Nintendo’s part. It feels thrown together quickly by some interns. Lol
all that being said...these are 3 AMAZING games now all in HD on one cart so it’s hard to grumble about that when every single one of these independently puts a giant smile on my face.
Nintendo really is like Disney and people are perfectly ok with it. Oh well, keep bending over for shadier and shadier business tactics.
Already bought it. If you missed on the titles on their original console, this is a no brainer.
So far I only tried Mario 64 and it is a great nostalgia trip.
I would highly recommend it.
To everyone saying it is a cash grab, keep in mind, with this kind of re-releases people who weren't even born when originals were released, they now have a chance to play it.

Before I get hate, I’m not selling them. One will be sealed for a collection and the other I’m undecided about but I am not selling it for stupid money. I did it for backup reasons.

I never played Sunshine so this is a perfect opportunity to play it
@MatoFilipovic it's not the fact that it's a cash grab that bothers me - Nintendo is a business after all. It's that their cash grabs are low effort, bare minimum releases that could and should be so much better than they are. If they'd given it their all, I'd probably pick it up. No reason we shouldn't have widescreen 64, everything locked at 60 fps, Galaxy 2 at a bare minimum.

And yes, the ommision of Galaxy 2 is baffling.
£50 is way too much. Maybe Nintendo has some amazing games lined up for 2021, because at least that would slightly numb the blow of what a let down this year has been in terms of first party games.
Don't get me wrong I love 3D Mario, 64 and Galaxy are in the top 10 games ever made (by a lot of peoples standards), but the output and information, from Nintendo, on whats coming has been poor.
Hope Age of Calamity smashes it though.
I hate that Nintendo has done the bare minimum with these games, but the problem is, even the bare minimum still gives you three amazing games on one disc. So yes, I bought it right away.
Before the switch my last big N console was the N64. I still remember the feeling of amazement when I started the game and felt like I was in the world and could go nearly anywhere. The game arrived today and I'm going to spend tomorrow drowning in retro happiness
