It looks like Bravely Default II will arrive on the Nintendo Switch before the end of this year.
As spotted by the good folks over at VGC, the upcoming JRPG produced by Team Asano, developed by Claytechworks and published by Square Enix has been rated by the Australian Classification Board earlier this week on 22nd September.
We had a look, and it appears the game will receive an M rating as it contains mature themes and violence, along with online interactivity.
This follows on from a demo, which was released on the Switch eShop back in March. It asked players for feedback via a survey so the developers could then fine-tune the game before release.
Now that the sequel has been rated, perhaps we'll see or at least hear more about a release date in an upcoming Nintendo presentation.
Are you looking forward to playing Bravely Default II when it lands on the Switch? Did you play the original 3DS title? Tell us down below.

January release is my bet. Maybe December.
October- Pikmin 3
November- Hyrule Warriors Age of Calamity
December-
January- Bravely Default
February- Mario 3D World
March- Monster Hunter Rise
With Shin Megami Tensei V being slated for Q1, so that’s a wild card. Nintendo’s exclusive output is actually looking really solid now. All that stressing these past few months... for nothing.
Rated M ?!
I will immediately delete the Demo version from my Switch.
That game is banned from my gaming area.
is it pay to win like last game?
pay for turns?
@JaxonH : Maybe, December is going to be Doom Eternal. It would give the game a renewed focus on the Switch, especially if it's good.
Yeah, thought so. I'm fairly certain we're going to hear about this game within the next few weeks, at least, in one of these mini Directs.
Hopefully they made some improvements, because the first demo was a bit rough.
@Anti-Matter LMAO
@Northwind Doesn't surprise me one bit. Bravely Default was pretty brutal: children killing eachother, references to date rape, torture, all sorts of nastiness. And that's setting aside the cosmic horror stuff in the later parts of the game. I guess the very basic presentation is probably what allowed the developers to get away with a T rating.
@Anti-Matter
Make sure to watch out for DDR Erotic Violence heading to Pachinko Parlors from Konami this December!
In before people asking how this beat Bayonetta 3 to market.
But seriously, I'm pretty surprised at how quick the turnaround was on this being announced to (possibly) released, if this comes to fruition.
So we can't expect a lot to change from the demo if it's still releasing this year. A bit disappointing, but I guess Square decided to pull the trigger regardless.
@Toy_Link
I have watched over the newest DDR A20+ from Youtube. The songlist was safe, except one licensed Western song from DDR A20 that heavily censored (all profanities removed) before being released.
20 years ago, DDR have sex songs by E-ROTIC from DDR 3rd Mix - 5th Mix and that era was over.
M? Really? Certainly not what I was expecting. Well, I wasn’t gonna be picking it up anyway but now it certainty I won’t be anytime soon.
@Anti-Matter @Ralizah
“It has muscular boys but it’s rated M”
Idc if it's M rating. Tell me the release date so I can pre-order it
Would love a collection of the first 2. Missed out on Bravely Second
Unless big changes have been made since the demo release, not interested.
@Cyberbotv2
Perhaps.
I’m not quite sold on there being a switch revision yet, but if there is a switch pro launching with Monster Hunter Rise in March, I can’t help but wonder if Doom Eternal is being timed to release around then, so it can be shown off as a trophy title in full 720p handheld and 900p/1080p docked.
Bravely Default 2, the 3rd game in the Bravely Default trilogy.
@Northwind Yep, both Bravely Default and Bravely Second have T ratings. I played and beat both and can attest that they earned those Ts. So I'm wondering what exactly flagged BD II as a mature title.
@Ralizah I'm guessing by the cosmic horror, you're referring to Ouroboros casually destroying the other parallel worlds during his battle sequence (representing the "other" incarnations of the main group and an indirect fourth wall reference to other players' games)? You're gonna need to refresh me on the roofie reference though. I've either forgotten about or missed that.
I still expect this game to be delayed to 2021, though it should arrive by early 2021 (like in January or so).
Give us FE:Awakening II and the 3DS sequel era is upon us.
@Tyranexx Yeah, generally everything around Ouroboros and Airy.
As to the other thing, I'm referring to the red mage asterisk holder.
@Anti-Matter what wrong with game being M?
An ‘M’ rating in Australia is not the same as the ‘M’ rating in US. It’s australia’s equivalent of the the ‘T’ or ‘12+’ rating that the series has gotten in the past.
I didn't expect an M rating, but after seeing the comments, I can see why.
@Anti-Matter Hey man (or woman, or whatever else), just curious on why you're so against M-Rated Games.
@Leidaans Clubhouse Games got the M rating in Australia. Australia is weird when it comes to rating games.
@kingjonelulz what do you mean exactly? Unless you are talking about the Japan only phone game the other titles were stand alone rpgs with no dlc or Micro transactions.
One of my most anticipated games of 2020 across all platforms. I really hope this lands by either December or January.
@HeadPirate and if you count Final Fantasy Four hero's of light which was truly the first game in the series it's number 4.And seriously the only difference in that game was the name, the world, monsters and even battle system was the same. The wanderer was the save and everything. On a side note I loved that game.
@Northwind
The ACB's M rating is analogous to the ESRB's T rating.
@HotGoomba
It got that rating for gambling games (e.g. Texas Hold em).
@HotGoomba Yeah I remember that, it’s probably because our ratings board is very sensitive about references to drug use and simulated gambling (the latter of which applies to Clubhouse Games).
@PLATINUM7 That is dumb. Then again, this is australia, LAND OF CRAZY, so I shouldn't be surprised.
I actually just got around to finally playing the demo a few days back. So I'm pretty stoked for this one!
@HotGoomba Yeah, there’s also the risk of the ACB just refusing to classify games, in which case it’s very hard to sell them. Stuff like Cyberpunk 2077 has to work really hard to remove references to drugs and gambling (or at least minimise them) or the game might not even be allowed to sell.
@CromAstronomy Both Bravely Default and Bravely Second let you pay to use the time stopping mechanic in battle. Using the feature allowed you to interrupt an enemy turn to take a turn of your own, while also raising the damage cap from 9,999 to 999,999. You could still use it without paying, but it took a long time to recharge, which you could skip by paying.
Not exactly a game defining feature though, and I wouldn’t be surprised if you got through both games without noticing it, let alone using it.
@Anti-Matter It’s the Australian ratings board rating it M. They’re notoriously harsh so you might want to wait until the ESRB and PEGI ratings come in as they’re likely to be lower.
@HotGoomba How in the actual **** did clubhouse get an M rating? Luck based maybe, the chess pieces are sexualized? Wtf?
Edit: it's probably the online interactivity.
One of my favourite RPGs series despite only having two games, but it's a relatively new franchise that started in 2013 (or somewhere before or after that year), so it's only natural.
@Toy_Link I love erotic violence
@graysoncharles Oh they do? Did not know that, I don't have the game nor the demo yet as I cant exactly justify the price tag until online is improved(yeah I'm kidding myself), and the latter simply because I haven't got the chance to. Very peculiar I would say. Still, I wonder what's going on down under with the ratings. They're notoriously strict for reasons beyond my understanding.
Also, someone else said gambling, that's probably the case as well.
@Ralizah Oh, right, DeRosa. I know what you're referring to now, though I didn't read QUITE that much into that story bit....I just recalled that he's a philanderer with some...suggestive dialogue.
@TheGamerKing it definitely isn't, the worldwide release date is 12 Feb 2021.
Before we jump to conclusions like anti-matter always does, ask yourself whether there was any elements of MATURITY in the demo playthrough? I say No.
Maybe the online factor maybe the cause? Other than that it's simply a Teen rating.
@Anti-Matter ok
@Anti-Matter get a grip mate
Stuff like Moero Chonicles is USK 16 here in Germany, I really can't see Bravely Default being any higher than 12.
Edit: Australian rating system.
@Leidaans Ohhh yea, I remember that now. It was the little S bottle things or something like that. Completely forgot.
Please come October! November and December will be too bogged down by hyrule warriors and immortals
@Northwind
Yeah, I was kinda shocked by this too. I played both others and they LIGHTLY danced towards a few sexual jokes, but in the same way Pixar will: designed to go over kids who don't know about it, there for the adults in the room. The violence was as non-existent as a RPG can get. Looney Tunes violence levels. So I'm KINDA stoked to see what nabbed this rating.
I am Australian and I can explain.
Our M equals your Mature rating in terms of definition.
However what constitutes mature here vs mature there can be quite different as different rating agencies rate things different
I am repeating this because of all the misinformation floating around in these comments.
My virgin thumbs can't handle the intensity of an M rated game.
After struggling with the original 3DS BD demo, I passed on it and the following BD games. However, I did try the BD2 demo on Switch, really enjoyed it, and was looking forward to the game. However, like several posters here, I'm not thrilled with an M rating. To each their own, but I'm usually not interested in subjecting myself to content that warrants an M rating. Will check the reviews when the time comes.
Looks like Luxendarc has a problem with COVID as well.
@the8thark I don't mean to start drama, but the two 'M' ratings are not comparable. The ESRB's 'M 17+' rating is much more in line with the ACB's 'MA 15+' where as their 'T' rating lines up much better with the ACB's 'M' rating. For anyone interested in looking into the ratings, here is the links to both the ESRB's and ACB's websites explaining their rating systems.

@Leidaans
The links are good information. However your opinions are just that opinions without fact.
I will repeat what I said above for your information.
"Our M equals your Mature rating in terms of definition.

Please actually try to understand what I said above without outright dismissing it as you did above.
The US E10+ is roughly similar to our PG
The US T is somewhere between our PG and M
Your M is mostly inline with our M but could also be considered an M+ in parts.
The US does not have a M15+ equivelant.
The US AO is equivelant to our R18+
When I say equivelant I mean roughly speaking so. As both systems don't exactly compare to each other.
I loved the first game but I was a little underwhelmed by the demo for this one. I didn’t like the shiny monsters and not being able to adjust the encounter rate.
I will still keep an eye on how the final version is received.
@Anti-Matter dude calm down, you’re upsetting my dinner guests
@CromAstronomy if u mean bravly default it does have micros u can buy turns its very scummy
fans defend it like crazy
