Now the remaster of The Wonderful 101 has arrived on the Switch and various other platforms, is there any chance of a sequel?
According to PlatinumGames' producer Atsushi Inaba and director Hideki Kamiya, the company is still open to the idea, but just like any sequel, it would have to be "bigger and better" than the original game. Kamiya even admits the mere thought of a follow-up kind of scares him.
Here are the full responses from both when asked about the possibility of a sequel by GameXplain:
Atsushi Inaba: There's never been a moment that I've thought I don't want to make a sequel to this game. If you're gonna do a sequel, you've gotta always got to do it bigger and better, and can we? We feel that there's a lot of content and a lot of quality in the original. Right now, we just feel it would be nice if the day comes where we could, but it would be a challenge.
Hideki Kamiya: When I've made games in the past I've had the tendency to set the volume of the game, the scope of the game to let's say ten, and then as time passes through development suddenly that ten becomes an eleven, becomes a twelve, becomes a thirteen, becomes a fourteen... I feel that's how we went with Wonderful 101, and I feel just like Inaba-san is saying, we'd have to, you know, go bigger and better for the next round. So when I think of the word sequel, and I think about the size that we ended up with, with the original, it kind of scares me if we could pass that original hurdle we've set for ourselves.
Earlier this year, the pair was asked a similar question and said it would be happy to consider it if fans supported the remaster. Would you like to see The Wonderful 101 get a sequel one day? Share your thoughts down below.

They are interested but if we want it on Switch we’ll have to “show interest” by doing a cross country run.
@Supadav03 I always get annoyed when devs hold sequels for ransom by saying "We'll make this game you want... If you buy this other game!"
@Kalmaro Well the original game didn’t do all that well so I can kinda see why they would be reluctant. It’s probably the most accurate way to gauge interest in a sequel to be honest.
Did the first game do well? If yes, make one. If no, don't bother. Just don't do another crowd funding thing for the love of god.
@nessisonett @Kalmaro Thing is, it's not a very good business practice because with some other companies, they essentially force fans to buy bad games. At least with TW101, you're buying a game that's actually really good.
@Cevil Is that $2m or 2m units? If dollars, that's not massively successful when you divide by the cost per unit. I can't see it happening, but would be open to it if it did. Then again, Bayonetta 1 wasn't very successful, but got a fresh lease of life thanks to Nintendo opening their wallets to fund a remaster and Bayonetta 2 on the Wii U.
@N00BiSH Yeah, I nearly lost hope for No More Heroes 3 that way, but apparently it will be made regardless. But saying "buy Travis Strikes Again or we won't make NMH3" was a bad move nonetheless. That's a bit like saying "we won't make a new (good) Dead Or Alive fighting game (without insane amounts of paid dlc), because the spin off games did poorly". And now I want to play Dead Or Alive Dimensions on 3DS again, which had free downloadable alternate costumes for each fighter, one each week for quite a while, if I remember correctly). Good thing I still have it!
After paying more than twice the cost of a game through kickstarter, only to see them release it through retail at normal price, I’m done with this company.
This is a little bit of a silly argument. It’s not ransom to say that you won’t make a sequel if the first in the series doesn’t sell. Doesn’t that just make business sense? When a developer decides to fund a game or not, they have to consider how much they think it will cost to make and how much it would sell.
After the lazy port job they did with the Wonderful 101 remastered they better be scared or better yet learn from their mistake and just take their time with the game. Also just make it exclusive for Switch, I feel them giving too many platforms to work with hinders the quality of the game cause they try to give the game the same equal experience and contents for all platforms and it just doesn't work like that.
@Kalmaro why? It's hardly ransom. It's common sense. Buying the game shows appetite for more. If nobody buys something, why would they waste time making a sequel? They all have bills to pay at the end of the day, and games don't make themselves.
I’d love this but I doubt it’ll happen.
@Wraggadam1 What @graysoncharles said. Imagine magink a game, seeing how you could improve, and then making people buy your game that may not have done as well just so they can have a chance to buy your new game.
That's kinda scummy. They should just do a Kickstarted or patreon to judge excitement.
NL if you are gonna rip this from Gamexplain's video, have the human decency to link out to their video, in more than a tiny "source" at the bottom.
@Kalmaro Same- but - if you watch the video they come off as "never say never on a sequel, but we have no ideas for a sequel - we're super proud of that 1st game tho." So them saying that about the port, if it sold well and in context of the video interview, is less of Capcom or someone pulling a "hey if you want DMC, support Dragon's Dogma" and more of a "we have no ideas for a sequel but if that port sells super hot, we'd totally look into it."
YES!!! Do it!!! I’ve been waiting almost 10 years!!!
I mean, since sales of "The Wonderful 101" must now be in the millions, because it is no longer hampered by being exclusively to the failure called Wii U, there is no excuse to not make a sequel. 🤷♂️
I adored The Wonderful 101 on my Switch and would absolutely love for a sequel!
Platinum Games is an incredible developer and I’m always excited whenever I hear of their newest projects.
Bring it on, lads and lasses!
Would the sequel be multiplat, or would it be a Switch exclusive? I think W101 is their game now, but Platinum needed to crowd fund the game because no one would publish it, and Nintendo was polite and basically said "You want the IP? You fund it." I feel like crowdfunding for a full fledged game would put Platinum in way over their heads, and Nintendo seems to be the only company interested in publishing the title.
@Andrew5678 they didn't need to crowd fund the game at all. It was just PR..
@RPGamer I don’t donate to Kickstarter projects, heh. Astral Chain is indeed amazing- one of my favorite manga artists/writers designed the game.
I want this sequel so much!! Honestly you don’t need to do ‘bigger and better’ just on par with the first is more than enough!
I’m content with just 1, but wouldn’t say no to another.
Of course I’d rather just have an Astral Chain sequel.
I'd rather they just focus on some of the games they have in the pipeline now rather than keep talking about more stuff that they are interested in.
Sure why not. PC version Of the remaster was fine, so had no issues with the Kickstarter campaign either.
But rather they focus on finishing Bayo3 and Babylon’s Fall.
The Wonderful 101 is such a great game and I'd be down for a sequel if it happened. At the same time however not every game needs to have a series; it had a nicely contained story and ended in such a way that it could be comfortably left as is.
I wish they could make the Wonder Blue spinoff they talked about all those years back
No kickstarter then ok.
I love all the games Platinum made, even if I'm one of those who are very very bad at them... I also love the W101. But that game could get lots of improvement. When playing I'm always half super excited and half super frustrated. Not the fighting parts, they are great (for the most part), but some platforming sections are really awful. The game gets so annoying at just making you see where a item is located in the perspective you look at it, or even where the platforms are. Or the one part where you guide the spaceship out of the ice caverns every mistake or being not fast enough is an instant death. So a sequel with a better gameplay would be much appreciated! They could also insert new unite moves. For the bigger... I really don't think it could benefit from so much more content, the first game is already full. Oh, and please (that is also in other games, including Astral Chain) even the length and difficulty of the missions and the sections inside them, they often seem really random between a checkpoint and the next.
They can make a sequel when they've delivered everyone's Kickstarter stuff
I wish I could unbuy the remaster just so they don’t make a sequel. The game wasn’t utterly horrible, but it definitely didn’t live up to the hype everyone gave it.
I don’t know why all the Platinum non-news lately, but we don’t need a Nintendo Life article every time Platinum says something. None of this is news.
@RPGamer Masakazu Katsura- creator of Video Girl Ai, DNA and Shadow Lady
Well I hope they stay away from kickstarter. I'm still waiting for my copy to arrive and expecting to be paying the frankly ridiculous import fees too! Honestly this has ruined any faith I had with platinum games and will struggle to give them anymore of my money!
@mazzel bad pr after they ***** it so badly though!
@Aaron101 totally agree...
@RPGamer indubitably. Check out his works- he’s a wonderful artist and writer.
@RPGamer its story made me cry. I adore that series.
@RPGamer definitely one of the best manga/anime series out there.
