We recently reported on Sega's upcoming new micro-console, the Astro City Mini which comes packed with 36 classic arcade games. Originally launched in 1993, the Astro City cabinet is still one of the most recognisable features in Japanese arcades, and is beloved by collectors.
Here are all the games that have been confirmed so far for the console:
- Alien Syndrome
- Alien Storm
- Golden Axe
- Golden Axe: The Revenge of Death Adder
- Columns II
- Dark Edge
- Puzzle & Action: Tant-R
- Virtua Fighter
- Fantasy Zone
- Altered Beast
- Bonanza Bros
- Columns
- Cotton
- Crack Down
- ESWAT
- Gain Ground
- Ichidant-R
- Puyo Puyo
- Shadow Dancer
- Shinobi
- Wonder Boy
- Wonder Boy in Monster Land
- Wonder Boy III: Monster Lair
The Astro City Mini's joystick uses microswitches, while HDMI-out on the rear means you can connect the device to your TV. There are two USB-A ports (for controllers) and a Micro USB port, as well as a headphone jack.
This micro-console is sure to be high in demand and will likely sell out very quickly. Amazon Japan and Play Asia have both listed the system for pre-order.
The release date for this is currently at the end of December 2020, and you can order them here:

There is no confirmation of a Western release of the micro-console yet, so pre-ordering direct from Japan might be your best bet.

As Mr. Burns once said... "I'd be happier with the dollar."
Why do the links take you to Amazon.co.uk? (Where they aren't selling it lol)
Well the price appears to have gone up a little. I'll pass on this one.
Pre-ordered this, though the controller doesn't ship to the UK, oddly enough. If it gets announced for worldwide release I'll probably cancel and go with that.
How about you just make this a compilation on cart SEGA? That would be more convenient the plugging a miniture arcade machine into my TV.
@GrailUK Nintendolife always use broken or incorrect links.
@Nomad Because that makes too much sense and we know if there’s one thing Sega doesn’t do, it’s make sense.
I’d like to see the whole list of games before buying. Given the third party offerings on previous mini consoles, it will be interesting to see if there are any for this console. Any of the Mortal Kombat arcade games would be a good inclusion.
@FragRed it does seem that way with SEGA.
@Nomad What cart? i'll speak to them later for you.
@gb_nes_gamer These are SEGA published games.
@YANDMAN that would be good thanks. Tell them preferably a horse drawn one.
@GrailUK @YANDMAN They take me to Amazon Japan. I'm using Chrome on a Macbook. What browser are you using?
@Damo on iPhone your links always do one of two things to me. Either open amazon app - or amazon.co.uk
For the gamer with small hands!
@Stocksy We're looking into it - this is the first time we've used Amazon Japan links so there might be a technical issue, but for me, it's going to Amazon Japan.
Links are going wherever you are based so mine's taking me to Amazon.fr.
@Damo Oh, it's fine now ^^
@GrailUK Yep, we've done a fix. Amazon links, traditionally, should take you to your local region's Amazon site, but in this case, that obviously can't happen. We'll be treating Amazon Japan links differently moving forward.
If this has turbo outrun on it but no uk release I will be upset xx
As you can see in one of the photos, a 16:9 screen will be installed. Even if, as you can see in other photos, the games run in 4:3, this is a point that bothers me extremely. and reason enough not to buy it for me. SNK screwed up because of the joystick, Sega now with the screen. Really sad. 😢
@Skeletor1979
Might be to support a few Model 1 and Model 2 games that had native wide screen support for the higher end variants.
Looks amazing the controls pad looks hideous though.
I wish they made the Astrocity arcade stick for this.
I hope it comes to the west as it looks so much better than the neogeo mini.
The price is out of line for this console. I am waiting on the real consoles they are supposedly going to release soon.
Just picked up the Sega Genesis Classic collection for $11.99 so happy I didn't preorder the GameGear Micro. Seems a bit pricey old games
What’s the difference between the Limited edition and the normal one?
@Damo Can believe i missed the pre-order for a whole week! ggrrr
Pre ordered now. I have a full sized Astro so this would be a nice companion one.
Also everyone should check out MSG Sega Astro on YT too, his creations are a thing of beauty!
The price was already announced days ago. It's fine if I can secure one thanks to a friend living there, but if I have to pay shipping I'll pass.
Anyway it's too soon. Let's wait for reviews and the possibility that it does come to the West.
I still need to know what the rest of the 26 remaining games are before I would throw cash on this. My guess is that two of those 26 are probably a Sonic and a Puyo game (probably Sonic the Fighters and Puyo Puyo Tsuu). Not surprise since those two IPs are everywhere on Sega's other mini consoles/collections.
Agreed with previous posters that the asking price is simply too high, and that a simple compilation for existing consoles would be far preferable and more practical.
Hell nah! Sega be trippin lately
Aww, controller does not ship outside Japan
I pre-ordered the actual console when it was announced, price seems to have gone up a tiny bit...
I like that controller. Hopefully we can order it outside japan soon.
Keep us updated on this please!
I'd rather put that kind of money towards funding my next gen console.
If this comes to the UK and it's an accurate way of playing Golden Axe: Revenge of Death Adder, I'll be tempted. If they can find a way to include Spider-Man: The Video Game, I'll definitely get it. However, the 16:9 screen is potentially a huge issue. It's important that the 4:3 games display in the correct ratio. Many Data East arcade games were a completely square 1:1, for example, and don't look right in 4:3.
Now, how about making a Track Ball controller and some kind of steering wheel/or the option to use 3rd party USB wheels so we can have the likes of SEGASonic the Hedgehog and SEGA Rally on it. :3
Is this only getting a Japan release?
I'll wait until the reviews before I decide if it's amazing or not.
Be aware! Playasia items always have import duty... that alone makes this device quite pricey.
I had luck yesterday with (https://buyee.jp/), they ship overseas.
Sounds like this might be a hard to find item
Give me a Game Boy Micro Mini or give me death!!
I think they don't want to steal Arcade1Up's thunder by not releasing this in America. Plus, it's cheaper just to download the ROMs, and put them on a computer to play them on your TV. A lot more clunky, too.
Looks alot like neo geo mini. im not sure if i need another one of those?? i only touched that thing once.
I’m definitely going to wait for a review, M2 aren’t doing the emulation.
@Kilamanjaro brace yourself the input lag on some of games on the collection is terrible.
Asking for money before the full game list is released is pretty cruel. Suppose it doesn't matter, basically no way I am buying this. It would need to have like all of the Model 2 fighters and some Naomi stuff for me to be interested at that price, and even then it's not super convenient for multiplayer.
Play-Asia are among the scalpers of this industry. Only order from them if you can't find it anywhere else.
@Deanster101 You've already played it? I agree that the Genesis Collection is plagues with input lag
What a generous selection of games!
Really, most of these games are only a few dozen kilobytes in size. -.-
@Deanster101 They fix that problem a long time ago.
@Deanster101 it's not too bad for Golden Axe or Sonic (so far) and I'm trying to work through Shining Force which doesn't require many quick movements that are dependent on timely inputs. I only hope they don't maintain this lag issue for the release of this mini system! No way to patch it out
Im definitely eyeing this thing...i want to see what other games they put on here and if it'll come to the states. Im already intrigued.
They're still available on buyee.jp.
I ordered the mini and an overpriced controller.
Ideally, it would release globally. But because the Astro City machine didn't hit other places, it could easily just be a Japanese thing.
It should be a compilation title. Who wouldn't pick this up?
But hey, if you want one, they still have them. No cancellations, though. A massive bummer if it does wind up coming to other places
@Nomad Yeah good thing nintendo have never done the same thing and released mini consoles before......oh wait
Though it probably goes over most peoples heads here anyway when I see some comment on how it looks as well.. It's meant to be for people who remember the arcades and are nostalgic for them.. You may not be but that doesn't mean others aren't especially when some sega arcade games never got home releases!
Sorry for coming off ranty, it just seems like you dont understand that Sega dominated the arcades back in the day, the prospect of them revisiting their old arcade games is not a bad thing
@Doktor-Mandrake hey man, it's all good. I'm a huge SEGA fan and grew up spending lots of time and money in the arcades back in the days when they were actually good. And yeah SEGA were one of the most prolific and best developers of arcade games back in the day. I was even lucky enough to have played Golden Axe: Revenge of Death Adder in an arcade.
Don't get me wrong, I really like what SEGA are offering here and would probably buy it if I had the spare cash. Heck, I've even thought about over the years buying some actual real old school arcade machines of my favourite arcade games. It just seems like this is a great compilation of games SEGA are putting out here and I reckon it would be great if I had the option to buy it on Switch like any ordinary game.
@Nomad Yeah it's pricey for sure, but hearing it has micro switched joystick and stuff sounds so much better than what SNK did with the neo geo mini, but it's going to depend a lot on what other games are going to be included too
Doubt I'll buy one despite it being tempting, the 5 mini consoles I have atm only get the rare occasional use as it is, in a way it'd be interesting to see sega do something like capcom did with their home arcade that includes fully sized joystick and buttons with up to 2 player support, maybe add some USB ports and allow race wheel support as well and include their racing games would be amazing, and include controller support for those without wheels
I hope it reaches the west as well, japan can keep the game gear micro but this certaintly has better prospects, although I do wonder if the "mini" console phase is starting to die out a little now though
Sorry if I come across a little ranty, sega can make some questionable decisions but I think this is a step in the right direction, a lot more then the game gear micro anyway lol especially if it will include a lot of rare games that either didnt get home release or never got a western release
@Doktor-Mandrake yeah I'm tempted to buy one too but I'm saving for the PC Engine mini to add to my NES, SNES and MegaDrive minis.
What puts me off buying it, despite the fact that it is an excellent compilation of arcade games is that, the arcade controlletr set up looks too cramped and I'd probably end up playing it on my big screen TV anyway. Plus there's the cost of importing it.
And I'm like you with the mini consoles, I set them up but never end up playing them for long lol, just need a nostalgia hit I guess.
I would absolutely buy this though if it got released at my local EB Games though.
