Square Enix has officially announced The World Ends With You: The Animation will launch internationally in 2021.
This all-new anime, based on the original Nintendo DS game from 2007, will see the Tetsuya Nomura, Takeharu Ishimoto and other members of the original development team return to once again bring the story to life. Production is being handled by Domerica and Shin-Ei Animation.
Here is a synopsis along with the official trailer:
Neku awakens in the middle of Shibuya’s bustling Scramble Crossing with no memory of how he got there. Little does he know he’s been transported to an alternate plane of existence known as the Underground (UG). Now an unwilling participant in the mysterious “Reapers’ Game,” Neku must partner up with a girl named Shiki in order to survive. Together, they complete missions and defeat monsters known as “Noise” as they gradually uncover the true nature of this twisted Game.

Interesting anime style. Closer to the game’s aesthetic than I’d expected. Definitely looking forward to this!
So it's not even a new story in the universe but ANOTHER retelling of the same story they've remade twice already?
Why does this franchise move so zetta slow?
Oddly faithful to the style, but will probably be a fun watch regardless.
The style ain’t doing anything for me, but looks aren’t everything.
On the one hand, I'm annoyed that they're retreading the original story yet again rather than doing the sequel fans have waited over a decade for...
But on the other, I'm glad we're getting something and I'm really happy with how it looks so far! I love how they managed to recreate the art style of the original game. My only concern is the music. I know the original composer is coming back, but it's not the same without the music from the game itself. I'm hoping they'll pull the tracks from the game, but the new music in the teaser isn't making me hopeful. That being said, TWEWY is one of my favorite games of all time, so I'm excited it's getting something again!
I kinda wish it was a new story in the universe, though I guess that is what a sequel is for!
If the anime is popular maybe we can get some hype for a new game.
TWEWY is one of my favourite games ever, this looks mildly interesting though.
I always thought TWEWY had tons of potential as a franchise. They could take this concept of the reapers game and have it take place with original characters in various places and cities around the world.
I guess I'm happy the franchise still shows signs of life. I worry that even IF we get a new TWEWY it will be a direct sequel with familiar characters and maybe even in Tokyo too.
So much wasted potential...
I love that art style, the original is one of my favourite games ever even if the remakes never felt right to me. I really hope this renews interest in the franchise because it has so so much potential.
Lol, I have never seen a company go to such incredible lengths to avoid making a sequel. We've gotten two ports and now an anime after nearly a decade of Square pretending that they're just about to greenlight another game. Can't wait for the 2023 PS5 port of the Switch port.
At this point I have played the story thrice (DS, Mobile then Switch) and now I'm going to be reliving the same story thru Anime.
Fine, but when is Square going to realise this series needs a sequel?
Think it great that they copied the artstyle of the game for the animation. Still have an feeling this will be one expensive anime to produce.
As I suspect the soundtrack will be the same as in the game
@MagnaRoader
Hope when this anime becomes an success. Because if they don't get the hint then I fear they never will
Looks brilliant, I love how faithful it is to the game. Shame its not out this year, but at least they have time to make it the best it can be
Still waiting on The World Ends With You 2
ooh i like the art style. and I think it's fine to retell the original story. I'm hoping we get a real sequel someday though.
An intriguing art style for sure. Maybe if the anime does well, they'll release more games in the series?
I still need to play the first game to be honest. I picked up the Switch version a few months ago, but it's part of the backlog right now.
This looks great!! 2021 seems so far tho.
I think between Ghost Trick, Edgeworth games, Hotel Dusk and this, TWEWY is the one I wanted to see the most in animated form.
Can we please get the original English voice actors from the game to voice the dub?
The style is bery pleaseing to watch
now announce the sequel square.
no point in hyping up a very niche franchise with an anime and nothing to show
with the rumoured nintendo direct and square wanting to announce games throughout july and augustus, might be seeing it soon
The Switch version has A New Day that teases a direct sequel, so surely TWEWY 2 is happening eventually, but RIP everyone who doesn't want a direct sequel.
@BLD well, its made by the same team that makes Kingdom Hearts and look how long it took them to finally make a KHIII.
well, at least this can get an anime as it's not as boggled down by copyright as KH's is
So, it's being handled by Japanese and the language in the trailer is completely Japanese, except for the title. Why not name this, It's A Wonderful World?
@noutBr didn't you pay attention to "A New Day" it's going to take place in Shinjuku.
@UnknownXen I did and I don't see how that changes anything what I said. The whole concept just has a lot of potential if taken to different parts of the world with all new ideas and characters.
