A super-rare Pokémon card has just been sold at auction, causing quite the stir in the world of collecting thanks to its near-legendary status and eye-watering price point.
The 'Super Secret Battle “No. 1 Trainer” Trainer Promo Hologram' card shown before you is one of the most sought-after cards in the entire Pokémon Trading Card Game. Only seven copies of the card were ever made and these were given out to winners of seven regional tournaments. The owners of the cards could use them to gain preferential entrance to a secret game tournament, hence the card’s name.
As you can imagine, seeing a copy pop up in an online auction is quite the event. On Thursday 9th July, one of the seven copies - which just so happened to be graded 'Gem Mint 10', or the finest condition such a card could be sold in - sold for a whopping $90,000 in a public auction held by Heritage Auctions. The final price is reportedly a "record-breaking" sale for the card.
Here's a little more info on the card if you're interested:
The artwork is by Hideki Kazama, a Japanese artist whose work has appeared on three trainer cards over the years. The card, with text in Japanese, is translated as such:
The Pokémon Card Game Official Tournament's champion is recognized here, and this honor is praised. By presenting this card, you may gain preferential entry into the Secret Super Battle.
Of course, we've seen other rare cards sell for even higher amounts in the past, including a very special Pikachu card which sold for $195,000 last year.
If anyone has one of these knocking about in their collection, we have a spare Weedle we'd be willing to trade for it?

I'm conflicted with this kind of thing. Someone won this card. I assume they willingly sold it, but for me, this kind of thing is a personal achievement. Buying it has monetary value for collectors, but feel like it would be wrong.
Are you gonna be happy buying someone else's trophy for winning something?
$90k!? So many people work so hard and they wouldn't make anything close to that in a year.
I get that if you are really rich you might want to buy nice things...but a card takes it too far. Hoping it comes in some kind of Banksy-esque shredder
@Kimyonaakuma in a year? I dont get that in 4 years 😂😂😂
Devastated! I was so, so close to winning this. I struggled to put together the final $89990. Damn it!
@Tipehtfomottob oh you should’ve let me know. I’d have got you $10 closer!
@Kidfunkadelic83 it would take me a decade nearly!
Yeah , sure it's cool. But I need money for other things.
@Tipehtfomottob so it was YOU that bid the 89,990? When I played my 89,980, I wouldv’e won if not for you!
@Kidfunkadelic83 same here, maybe one day though! (Or at least a decent fraction of it)
@Kidfunkadelic83 @Kimyonaakuma It wouldn't take 4 years at minimum wage to make that here. Perhaps you need to get the laws changed.
@Kimyonaakuma $90,000? That not nearly enough as Illustrator Pikachu. This card had 20-40 cards, but the card ended up selling for over $200,000.
Quick question... Are @Apportal and @Tipehtfomottob joking or telling the truth? It’s hard to tell through just text. 😉
What a waste of money
@BabyYoshi12 no I seriously have a but load of money. Chilling in my Mario-shaped pool right now with Rihanna.
Sorry. Yes I’m joking lol
@StevenG "It wouldn't take 4 years at minimum wage to make that here. Perhaps you need to get the laws changed"
Me change the law? If i was in a position to be changing laws im sure i would already be able to afford this with ease.
@Apportal Haha! I was pretty sure you were joking but I was mostly asking Tipehtfomottob.
@Tipehtfomottob I said your name out loud and my computer started floating.
@Heavyarms55 If the seller no longer played Pokémon, then I would, but if nobody else bet and I ended up winning it for basically anything less than $50,000, I’d refuse it, because I still respect the person who’s selling it.
@Kidfunkadelic83 If you live in most of the world you can change the laws by voting and reaching out to your representatives.
@StevenG
Your naivety is almost touching.
@Tipehtfomottob LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOL
@Apportal lmao, read it backwards.
I'll never forget the day some stole my whole collection. I was about 12 yo I think, and had 2 or 3 years of collecting and trading in a binder only for someone to take it out of my bag and run away. This was 3rd gen times iirc. I was absolutely crushed. I don't know what I'd do if I ever found out who he was, even now as a 30 yo man.
@DevlinMandrake I have actually campaigned for and had legislation passed. Maybe instead of being contrary and juvenile you should put in some effort.
@Bl4ckb100d there are many ways of torture, my dear son.
@StevenG Not if you vote minority. Im sure if that was the case every one in the majority of the worlds countries would be in a comfortable state of living. Plus im not looking to spend 90k on a pokemon card so im all good.
@Bl4ckb100d I fill you bro
I brought some rare cards to trade at 3rd or 4th grade and someone tried to stole them from me
I stopped him but I was angry! He tried to steal my water and fire ryquaza cards
@Tantani that's awesome you could stop it! sadly I lost so many great cards, many 1st gen and 2nd gen holos which were the best at the time, that I stopped collecting altogether. Today I only have one card that I bought just for the nostalgia, neo genesis's Sneasel, which was (and is) my fav card and pokemon.
I'm going to be honest, that card looks pretty sick.
It's kind of... Useless, even in the context of the game.
Like, buying a tiny diploma with someone else's name in it.
@Apportal
Yeah I'm filthy rich mate 🤑. I don't know what it is but every time I take my Master Sword out to cut the grass (I can't afford a lawnmower), I seem to find these like shiny green, blue, yellow, red, purple, orange and silver stones. I trade them in at the pawn shop and I now have a vault of money just like Scrooge McDuck.
@Apportal
Just don't say it out loud three times in front of a New Donk City painting. You'll be trapped there forever, trust me 😜
@Heavyarms55 Could say the same about this Rockman 4 Famicom gold cartridge (given out to only the eight children(?) who designed the main bosses), but is now destined to remained (I assume still so) as a display piece at a Super Potato (or whichever store it was).
I've heard that despite a 600k yen asking price, they have no desire to sell.
I've heard of Mandrake which had several other gold version retro games (though retro game fans trying to decide whether those were actual prize variants or if someone created them, like spray-painting retail games ).
Regardless, that is one less copy of Vampire Killer (Japanese CV Bloodlines) anyone is going to ever play.
I placed first in a national Pokemon tournament.
I WISH they had given me a card instead of the junk I got.
Maybe one day I can sell my medal for $90,000 @_@
Nobody cares about my 30HP Bulbasaur...
A card selling for $90,000 with an article linking to info on a Pikachu card selling for $195,000. Same states the $90,000 card sale broke records.
Huh....?
@StevenG How many years you need to get that money with even average salary very much depends on the country you are living in though, and whether you are counting your salary before or after taxes, which are also strongly dependend on the place where you are living.
It seems like a lot of money to spend on a bit of paper. But then again, money itself is also just... bits of paper (and that’s when it’s in its most tangible state).
If this piece of Poképaper can one day be exchanged again for even more of the money paper than it was purchased for, then it can be argued to be a sound financial investment. Thought of that way, it’s basically a $90,000 bill whose digits keep ticking up (again, assuming it continues appreciating).
Despite that, I can’t say that bidding vast sums of income on a paper trophy from a children’s card game leaves the best taste in my mouth, but... you probably don’t have to look too far to find more egregious examples of ‘the market’ underscoring vast wealth discrepancies.
@BabyYoshi12 That's like an athlete selling their first place soccer trophy because they don't play soccer anymore. Just because you've gotten older and/or moved on wit your life doesn't mean you wouldn't still be proud of your accomplishments. I just don't understand.
@Heavyarms55 Well, maybe this person had bad memories about Pokémon? I don’t know, but it’s slightly different than a soccer trophy for two reasons:
A) You play Pokémon cards, but not trophies.
B) Nobody would be interested in buying your trophy.
@Bl4ckb100d That must suck. When I was younger, a kid stole my best card at the time. It was some sort of EX and a kid I knew quite well asked to see it and ran away with it. One of my friends told a teacher, and it ended with all cards being banned from school indefinitely.
@BabyYoshi12 This card is a trophy. You do not play it. In fact, this card does nothing in the game itself. It's a trophy and an invite to an exclusive event for high ranking players.
This is like an American football player selling his Superbowl ring. Yes, that happens, but it's unusual and I consider that just as odd.
I can't attest to the bad memory aspect. I suppose that could be a reason to sell it. Perhaps the person felt he did not deserve the win if the game he won it in game down to an element of luck, rather than skill.
This wasn't a reward for some small local tournament, this person had to win at a very high level tournament to get this card.
@Heavyarms55 Yeah, I wouldn’t sell it, but this person probably had bad memories with Pokémon or was desperate for money.
