Wales Interactive and FMV Future have revealed Gamer Girl, a new live-action FMV game headed to Switch this September.
The game is said to be the first live-action title to have been entirely improvised by the cast, in a production style similar to The Blair Witch Project and Paranormal Activity. Players take on the role of a moderator for up and coming streamer ‘Abicake99’, analysing and reacting to a stream of comments in the chat while also guiding Abi to make the right choices.
It's essentially a blend of micro-management and a branching story-focused game, as shown in this feature list below:
MANAGEMENT META GAME
- Manage the user’s comments in the chat stream
- Choose to reward them for good behaviour & ban them for trolling
- Unlock more powerful moderator abilities as you progress
- Earn Candies, likes and subs to keep Abicake99’s mood positive
- Increase Abicake99’s viewers and subscribers to keep her career on track
- Make the channel a success to earn upgrades
- Warn, ban and reward comments in the chat stream
- If you fail Abi will kick you off the stream and it is GAME OVER
BRANCHING NARRATIVE:
- Gamer Girl has multiple story paths; hundreds of choices and permutations.
- Players help Abi choose which activities they think would further her streaming career or enhance her mood – workout sessions, gaming, cosplay, chill streams, IRL trips, board games, chibis drawing (ちび or チビ), etc.
- Make moral choices and accept the consequences they bring. Should you encourage drama to increase her ratings or take the safe path but risk losing viewers?
- Exchange messages with Abi and her friends. Will you help them, or do they have ulterior motives towards Abi?
Publisher Wales Interactive explains that the game also tackles the impacts user comments can have on a person's mental health.
"Gamer Girl is about the impact user comments and actions have on a streamer’s mental health and wellbeing. The reason why FMV Future created the game was to raise the issue of the toxic environment which can often appear online behind the anonymity of a username...
Without giving away too much, Gamer Girl is an empowering story of a female streamer who, with the help of her moderator friend, battles the trolls and — overcomes— the toxic characters in her stream..."
The game launches this September starring Alexandra Burton as Abi, and also features David Wayman, Rebecca Calienda, and Sofia Maffei with cameos by real streamers including CyborgAngel.

So the objective of the game is to be a simp.
Jokes aside, I'm really confused as to who this is meant to appeal to.
I like these movie games with multiple pathways and endings. The auction house heist one was good.
@JR150 I can only imagine this'll appeal to people looking to become Twitch staff, perhaps they'll use this as training material haha.
Sounds like trouble in a can; don't we have enough drama / tragedy surrounding streamers at this point already? Feels like a case of real life, video games, and bystander interaction all twisting into a black hole of surrealist oddity.
@JR150
As someone who mods occasionally, I can't think see the appeal myself. I think this is probably directed at folks with a more romanticized view of streaming/modding. View that said, it may be a entertaining Her Story esque game instead of a tedious recreation of what mods do.
@JR150 This is no joke. It is literally the objective of the game
@Collette
Considering it's described as a "chilling thriller", hopefully it'll be more than a SIMP sim. Although I wouldn't be opposed to a SIMP sim if it took a satirical angle
Either way, let's hope this won't be more shovelware.
God this looks awful, they have used a picture with her jacket off one shoulder to appeal to pervs, and to be honest the whole premise looks like perv central
@Bunkerneath
As a perv, I'm offended that you think I'd enjoy garbage like this.
Sounds like an awful awful idea for a game
Video games allow you to use your computer screen to imagine yourself in one of a million different worlds doing one of a million different things. A knight in a fantasy world, an alien in space, a plumber in a mushroom kingdom.
This one let’s you imagine You’re in front of your computer screen clicking on things.
@Ainz or people who are are huge fan of fmv games
@JR150 screenshot has a bit of cleavage. There's folk pre-ordering now.
Its essentially a management game and if its handled right could be interesting. But let's be honest the games Industry more often than not has no concept of subtlety so this will be both barrels of the morality shotgun to the face. Im always open to being proven wrong, so prove me wrong Wales Interactive
@CaptainRPG I was mostly joking lol
Hopefully there is character customization so I can be a Twitch Deer mod.
I think I was having a stroke whilst reading the headline. The first half doesn't make any sense to me
Do you get a certificate for completing this “game”?
@ImagineerNik A stroke ey...
Sounds like a modern day Night trap to me
Whyfus in twitch: ima show half my uppersize
Other whyfus: we are forced to show stuffs.
Why?!
Did I miss something here? Little by little I feel like I've seen more FMV type games in the eshop. Are these slowly making a return? Did a demand from a audience just rise up from the shadows? I wonder because it seems like games like this require a lot of production effort then again advances in technology make it easier (could film the whole thing on a modern smartphone I guess).
As a kid in the 90s I like many were all over these games because it was such a unique experience. Pretty much all games were still 2D experiences so when this trend came about with games like Tomcat Alley, Ground Zero Texas, Quarterback Attack, Prize Fighter etc. it was like as "lifelike graphics" or whatever. If I remember as fast as the trend took off it died. What/who's bringing it back?
only real with enough cleavage and a camera angle from above
All these people bashing on the game, yet as soon as somebody uploads a complete playthrough to YouTube, it will have a million views instantly.
@ImagineerNik Same here. I had to read the article to understand the headline. It definitely doesn't help that "moderate" has two different meanings and so can be read at loud in two different ways.
Why? You can be a SIMP for a girl on Twitch for free IRL
I’m really not sure how to feel about this.
Any kind of bullying is horrible. But when you choose to become a streamer, isn’t that par for the course? You are broadcasting yourself to the public. Expecting everyone to behave responsibly is pretty unrealistic. Better to learn how to ignore the words of said a**holes.
This feels patronising rather than helpful.
@6ch6ris6 Sorry, reality does not suit the agenda.
@HappyMaskedGuy Nobody should be harassed or bullied online but the nature of the Internet makes it hard to control that sort of thing.
A big issue is that many start to consider any form of criticism to be harassment which probably isn't represented in this game but is an underlying issue in the "culture" we have today.
Oh, and please, @NintendoLife, sort out the headlines of your articles. This one is an indecipherable trainwreck.
@Ainz Exactly my thoughts. I hate bullying, but thought policing isn’t the solution either. And this looks like ‘Virtue Signalling—The Game.’
AHM OFFENDED.
So you just turn off the chat and you win the game?
I still don't understand watching other people play video games, as a kid we called that waiting for our turn. So I can't understand a chat stream about them playing the game. If I caught my kid watching such trash I would send him outside to play.
First Day Purchase if you have to keep control of the chat after she tosses a cat.
@HappyMaskedGuy Reads perfectly fine to me?
I can't help but laugh that they plugged the omnipresent and cliche cleavage shot; low hanging fruit I guess to market with (no pun intended).
@JR150 I joked on the PS site that this is a "Simpulator".
@StevenG Plenty of reasons to watch other people play imo. Could be to watch an impressive speedrun, could be to learn some tricks in competitve or could be because you simply enjoy a streamer's personality. Plenty of people watch TV and sports and nobody questions them. Even as a kid, I enjoyed spectating a friend of mine playing through Resident Evil 4 when I was too scared to play that game for myself.
Anyway, very weird game but we live in a world in which games like farming simulator are popular so I've no doubt this game has an audience.
I have no idea what SIMP means and I’m fine with that.
@HappyMaskedGuy
Moderate a streamer's chat in 'Gamer Girl', coming to Switch this September.
It's like Night Trap, except actual garbage
Unpaid Labor Simulator
@MajinSoul TV is about a plot, something happening. Sports are physically impressive. Video games are a thing you are meant to do yourself, they are not for just watching idly. I understand people can like other things, but frankly I will send my kid outside to play if he is ever so bored as to watch someone else play video games.
@JR150 People who like FMV games, people who like Internet culture and being meta about it, etc.
@Damo
I think I know what he means, it's the word "moderate" that could be confusing. When I first read it I thought moderate was being used as an adjective instead of as a verb which made the whole headline seem weird. Once I worked out the game was a job as a moderator it all clicked! 😅
So let me get this straight. This is a game, where you take on the role of moderator/producer for an imaginary person who plays imaginary games on camera for imaginary people to watch.
So we've now graduated beyond "kids no longer play games, they just watch other people play them on Youtube" to "kids now play simulations of managing internet trolls for fake people who play actual games for other fake people to pretend-watch?"
@JR150 Ask the comment directly below you lmao
Imagine being a mod in a stream of someone playing this game.
This is interesting! I remember when I was a kid there were all these really intriguing FMV games that were coming out on various CD based consoles that I missed because the consoles were bloody expensive. It’s neat to see that they are potentially making a comeback.
I did finally get to play one on PC called SWAT, where you are a new member of a SWAT Team. That game contained a lot of hilariously bad acting, made it really enjoyable. Super interesting!
@RustedHero 80’s kid here, I remember these, too. Really interesting to see more of them. This one isn’t for me, but maybe they will make some zany sci-fi one like they had when I was a kid lol
@popey1980 Not sure if you read the article, but the game has a purpose. Just because you don’t like it doesn’t mean others won’t try it lol
@Collette All work is honorable. If someone’s husband is moderating their Twitch chat, not only is that incredibly supportive, but it’s cute af. It’s the sign of a healthy relationship, where there is a mutual respect and support. Wouldn’t you want that sort of moral support from a significant other?
@TG16_IS_BAE "Wouldn’t you want that sort of moral support from a significant other?"
Yes. It is extremely good if your husband/boyfriend etc. support you but NOT when you flash cleavage. In that case the husband is helping his wife to get more horny idiots to drool on her for money.
This is what I call disgusting.
"All work is honorable." This is simply not true. At least for me.
@Bunkerneath Dude, don’t show up to a gym or a beach, then. You’ll see people wearing far less than the picture of this girl. But, your sorts of comments are pretty common these days. Women on the internet literally can’t please people like you, even when they dress in normal clothing where they are mostly covered up, you criticize. It’s truly a phenomena.
@Zuljaras Look at the picture in the article for the game. That’s an extremely modest look for the person portraying a streamer. As a side note, some people make a living as s** workers. Some of the ones that have a little more shame take to Twitch instead of other, less desirable methods. Is it the most desirable outcome? Probably not, but being judgmental towards them doesn’t really solve their situation. If you don’t think all work is honorable, then I simply wouldn’t want to associate with you, as that’s a pretty massive conflict of interest.
Everyone has to play to their strengths to survive on this planet. If someone can survive by flashing cleavage to make someone else happy, then more power to them.
@TG16_IS_BAE My point was about all streamers. And yes we have different opinions.
Have a nice day.
I'm assuming this is one of those games where the story takes a big twist and makes it more interesting than it sounds on paper, but they just don't want to spoil that here. Games like Doki Doki Literature Club and Papers Please sound pretty dull too until you actually play them.
Quick let’s point out every item in her room and ask her if she has any tattoos!
@Zuljaras That's great, but it's still incredibly judgemental!
@MrGawain "This one let’s you imagine You’re in front of your computer screen clicking on things."
There are many games which do that successfully, like HypnoSpace Outlaw. It's basically an 90's Internet Simulator where you have to take down people's pages and put a stop to plagiarism, illegal activities and offensive behavior, eventually leading you to conspiracy theories (which totally makes sense because Internet) and plot twists. It's a great game, regardless of it being a "Computer Simulator" where you have to click on things, and the presentation is very unique as well.
@Damo deploys infallibility. It failed!
Is there really an audience for this kinda thing?
Looks like it was very cheap to make though, so perhaps they don't need to sell many to make it worth their while.
@happymaskedguy
I think you’re missing several important points. Regardless of whether it happens online via streaming, abuse is abuse. If it’s a crime in person, why shouldn’t the same rules apply online?
Also, women tend to suffer a disproportionate amount of abuse online, not least sexually. They should feel protected and confident enough to do what they want to do without worrying about bullies or harassment.
If a game helps to highlight those issues, and maybe get people to consider what they are doing wrong, isn’t that a good thing?
@NEStalgia Sometimes things get so backwards, they're forwards. Maybe we can have a gamer girl bath water selling simulation next. At least they'd be going back to actually playing a video game of some form.
@HappyMaskedGuy True. But isn’t it patronising to treat people as if they don’t already understand that abusing people is wrong, and harmful? Isn’t that why they do it in the first place?
Also, isn’t it a bit holier-than-thou to preach to people? Isn’t this taking a privileged position of self-righteousness? Most people understand that such behaviour is wrong. To tar everyone with the same brush is surely deconstructive and hypothetical?
@HappyMaskedGuy Even so, nobody is forcing you to listen to said preaching. Just don’t buy the game.
@HappyMaskedGuy By that logic is a game that encourages you to abuse people online just as okay?
This is... Odd. The internet is a horribly toxic place but I'm not sure if a game about being a mod is the best way to raise awareness of the issue. Also this sounds like a boring game. If it were a game about a vigilante who finds racist/sexist trolls and beats them to death I would buy it. But being a mod? Ehhhhhhhh. Just my opinion, I'm probably not the demographic for this game.
@Menardi I feel like that idea might already be patented in Japan....
I'm reading this thread and seeing people having entire argumentative conversation chains with themselves. It feels like I'm playing the game already....
Uhh, yeah thats a hard no from the world.
@SSJW You maybe, not me. They are for playing, not watching.
@Collette Remember not IRL Waifu, E-girl. It is necessary to use the right 2020 vocabulary (^_^).
@Cool_Squirtle if anything it it's just going to reenforce our stereo types against girl gamers.
i mean im going to watch Twitch girls play this game and theyll talk about how it's just like them.
I have contempt for anyone who pays money for this.
@Dezzy Best comment haha.
@SSJW An incel term?
@HappyMaskedGuy What purpose would such a game serve though? To quote Dr Ian Malcolm:
‘Your scientists were too preoccupied with whether they could instead of stopping to think whether they should.’
A game about being a nasty online troll? Think we have enough of that in reality.
@Dezzy What if they pay in ‘favours’?
@Collette You’re clearly not talking about the game, come off it
@Collette Worry not, Fair Maiden.
I shall defend you here.
Back, foul Beasties!
Why would anyone want this ?
I think I will pass on this one.
For the simps that really need a way to be "satisfied" during quarantine.
@StevenG Honestly about 80% of people who watch streamers come to chat with the streamer or others in chat. Majority of people don't care what the person is playing.
Sounds Awful.
don't mind me, I'm just here for roasts on this game..
(simp-ulator. heh heh, what a riot)
