On Friday, Nintendo announced it would be revealing the next fighter for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate in a broadcast next week.
The "roughly 35-minute-long" event will take place on place on Monday, 22nd June at 3pm BST / 4pm CEST / 7am PT / 10am ET and will be hosted by the series' director Masahiro Sakurai.
What you might not know, though, is it will be taking place in Sakurai's very own home. This was confirmed in a tweet by the Japanese Smash Twitter account. Nintendo Life contributor Robert Sephazon also translated Sakurai's own tweet about it:
"Did I really do it? Yes! I filmed at home. This time there was no filmography staff, so I'm controlling the camera alone."
So get ready for a special Masahiro Sakurai home broadcast!
The next fighter - based on Nintendo's latest IP, ARMS - was first announced way back in March. This fighter will also be the first star to appear in the second Fighters Pass and is expected to arrive at some point this month - with any luck it's not long after the presentation
Are you looking forward to tuning into Sakurai's home broadcast - let us know down below.

The ARMS fighter is the 7th DLC fighter, not the 6th. Piranha Plant was the 1st, then we had the first fighters pass. So many seem to forget that!
With this being from his home, filmed by himself, this is going to have a really interesting feel to it. Looking forward to it muchly!
Remember. Don’t expect any added surprises about future fighters.
Sakurai has nothing up his sleeves other than Arms.
im glad we have such comforting figures like sakurai in the game industry. the dlc has been such a cherry on top of a great game, looking forward to what the teams been cooking up
Have my fingers crossed for an extra mode. (Break the targets, board the platforms or smash run, hopefully.)
“Hopefully he'll be in an ARM-chair”
Why?
Sounds armless enough.
hope that furniture he bought didnt cost him an arm and a leg, but all kidding aside, excited
@mesome713 who is Spring Woman? Have you even played arms -_-
@PawlSLax Oops, can't forget Piranha Plant (my profile pic) - it's still probably my favourite of the DLC characters.
@mesome713 It’s ribbon girl.
Looking forward to it! We'll finally know who it will be tomorrow. Hopefully they'll release tomorrow as well, I'm excited!
Wonder if they'll keep doing Mii costumes as well.
Hoping for Twintelle but not getting my hopes up. Also haven't really been playing the game. Still I do get hyped for the presentations no matter what.
I bet he forgets to wear pants! No one will notice, though, because the focus will be on all the arms in the room.
I do wonder what kinds of chairs he has in the background, so I can speculate the next fighters based off of them.
My man sakurai, should start his own youtube channel
Hopefully the production of the video didn't cost him an arm and a leg.
PlayStation Home confirmed for Smash.
Sakurai at home getting ready to ARM everyone with the knowledge of the next fighter
@mesome713 Have you even heard of ARMS? There is no Spring Woman. Did you mean Ribbon Girl?
Sakurai house tour please
Sakurai better give us a house tour during the livestream
MinMin Please!
@Entrr_username Because NL writers like to attempt a relaxed, colloquial style, but aren't nearly skilled enough to achieve it.
Together with the character, I hope for an excellent stage, songs and many spirits! Speaking of them, how many are we already in?
1403?
Everyone’s going to see Sakurai’s personal shrines to Geno and Kid Icarus Uprising in the background and make assumptions.
@mesome713 There is no such thing as a Spring Woman. Also Nintendo chose which franchises should be added to the passes.
Shame on you for threatening someone over something as simple as videogame characters. Someone who donated supplies to his employees during quarantine just so their work goes smoother since their home supplies were insufficient.
Hoping for the blobby boi, Helix. I just want him to cluck at the other fighters.
@mesome713 Get the hell out of here, and go back to the circus you clown. 🤡🤡🤡🎪🎈
The more i see these characters the more i think okay it will actualy work in smash. Cant wait to play with them.
Can we stop kissing up to Sakurai for once? The guy is nothing special, just a self-loving director.
@LightningDragon Reggie said that Sakurai chose the DLC characters.
why is everyone talking about arms? i just hope they announce the sequel game LEGS!
(but seriously i'm excited to see who the arms rep is)
@backup368
Reggie never mentioned that.
Also In my comment I mention franchises not characters big difference. Nintendo provided a list of franchises.
Sakurai chose if it was possible or not for him to make a moveset for a character of said franchise.
I am fired up! I wish there was an ARMS pack, but just glad there's a DLC that I care about finally.
@LightningDragon He said it right during the Game Awards 2018.
@backup368 No... No he isn't.
@backup368 I watched it live and just re-watched it while I was typing my previous comment he didn't
@LightningDragon You must have missed this part.
“It’s emblematic of the approach that Mr. Sakurai and the team are taking with the DLC. He wants characters that are unique, different, to bring them into the Smash Bros. environment. So it’s going to be tremendously exciting.”
@backup368
The quote you provided is about developing characters not choosing them. In other words Sakurai and his team's approach is that wants to develop the characters as unique as possible.
Nintendo (or more specifically the main branch Nintendo of Japan) brought up the list of franchises and Sakurai chose if it was possible to develop a unique character from those franchises.
You also forget Nintendo are also the ones that decide whether or not an Intellectual Property, Trademarks and copyrights are to be used (a bit loose with 1st parties but not by much), doing so otherwise would be illegal.
@LightningDragon So in other words, it's Sakurai's decisions.
@backup368
@LightningDragon
Actually with what you both presented it should be both Nintendo and Sakurai. I can see it as a bunch of business deals
Nintendo chooses which franchises due to upcoming deals.
Atlus with Persona (Nintendo promoted upcoming titles that contained the Joker IP such as the port of Tokyo Mirage)
Dragon Quest (Publishing rights to the definitive edition and ports as well as other things)
Banjo-Kazooie (due to a deal with Minecraft)
Fatal Fury and SNK (Support from future SNK titles such as Samurai Shodown and the addition of the SNK library)
Fire Emblem Three Houses (Self explanatory)
ARMS (Nintendo's newest IP that sold 2 million that for some reason they keep sending out codes for the game as prizes in tournaments)
And Sakurai chooses the characters. Though not sure why Sakurai can't just say no to certain franchises if he has a "problem with them." Its not like they have a shortage of deals considering the support they've been getting.
That being said if Sakurai did lie about that whole thing in Famitsu then he might be in trouble.
While I'm kinda excited for this character, I'm also interested in what the next set of Mii suits will be like and if there will be one with a music track like Sans/Megalovania and Cuphead/Floral Fury.
@MrCerulean7 Because Sakurai said so? You know it's possible for him to lie.
"(Nintendo promoted upcoming titles that contained the Joker IP such as the port of Tokyo Mirage)"
There is no "Joker IP", and if you are talking about Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE, is Nintendo trying to market that game now? No. Now it's Pokemon & Animal Crossing.
"Publishing rights to the definitive edition and ports as well as other things"
From Dragon Quest 11's producer, the Hero is broken in Smash Bros. because "Sakurai likes Hero so much".
"due to a deal with Minecraft"
...
"Support from future SNK titles such as Samurai Shodown and the addition of the SNK library"
Because yeah, Nintendo wants to sell you $7 arcade ports of all the titles they have available on the eShop. Why?
"Nintendo's newest IP that sold 2 million that for some reason they keep sending out codes for the game as prizes in tournaments"
I can buy it second hand today for 8 USD. If they're giving it away, then clearly how much money can you actually make with the game today?
Yay! But I really hope that corona is gone in time and for the DLC. I already have all the DLCs and still on the lookout for MORE!
@backup368
Fun Fact: Employees spreading false rumors about companies that they work for result in termination especially if its on open media such as Famitsu and one of the most well known videogame magazines. The fact that Nintendo hasn't done anything or corrected Sakurai's statements (because he has asserted this multiple times) on Famitsu to defend themselves means he was telling the truth. Otherwise It also means that Nintendo allows its employees to produce false statements and when things go wrong slander to be spread to the Japanese audience and even to those on the west that look for the translated media and keeping said employee would be negligent.
@MrCerulean7
When you can't accept a project you have to justify why you can't go forward with it. "Too many FE characters is not an acceptable statement" and "I cant make an unique moveset for a FE character is a false statement" doesn't look well considering he would be saying no to Nintendo's first party character choice
@LightningDragon Sakurai has a history of lying. Specifically passing blame to other people when he blatantly picks characters that nobody asked for but himself. He can lie on his Famistu columns assuring that loyal fans like you will believe it.
Corrin: "The team made me."
Bayonetta: "The fans made me."
Byleth and others: "Nintendo made me."
And who in Nintendo is he referring to? Does he answer to an executive, a committee? No, he is super vague and nobody else at Nintendo is playing along with him.
Mechanica would be so nice
Does anyone remember those arm sleeves they gave away at gamestop during the ARMS demo? I'm gonna wear them during the presentation.
@backup368
Do you have any proof that those were lies or that Nintendo employees themselves confirmed that those were lies.
Corrin: Exactly Just like how they asked him to make Roy because Nintendo had plans to make him a certain way only for Sakurai to realize that was not the final case.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RFmGP3inhB4
Bayonetta: He said that she was the most realizable of the Ballot choices which is true she actually was (Not only that both Sakurai and Iwata commented that the ballot was a suggestion box).
Oh I don't know how about the Higher ups that that legally own the character who Sakurai works for such as the CEO. Reggie does not count since he's the President on NoA they don't get involved until much later after the projects have been decided.
@LightningDragon And all those things you claim came from the same guy.
If what you are saying is true then how come Fire Emblem characters were never a thought in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe? The answer is because they only wanted Nintendo characters with successful series so that fans of those games would buy Mario Kart. The philosophies of these two games aren't the same.
The "ballot" was a stunt and Bayonetta was always in the plans. If you close the ballot in early October & reveal her in a near-complete state in mid-December, that's a clear giveaway that she was in development much sooner. Sakurai was always a big fan of the series and had rave reviews of the first game in his Famitsu column.
Of course you have a video from VGST, they'll believe anything he says. They were willing to justify how the pandemic was a good thing because it's better for Sakurai's "lifestyle". Sakurai can't change so the world has to.
And here's another classic.
Sakurai: Square Enix is so stingy.
Noctis announced for Tekken 7.
Sakurai: Square Enix is so stingy!
2B announced for SoulCalibur VI.
Sakurai: Square Enix is stingy to the max.
Thief Arthur announced for SNK Heroines.
Sakurai: Square Enix is soooooooooo stingy!
Lara Croft announced for Brawlhalla.
@backup368
And yet, compare the Square content in Smash with Terry's fifty songs.
I'm hyped for any crazy Mii Fighter costume.
I know that's setting a low bar here, but given we're not getting other news, unless the ARMS fighter goes the Bowser Jr./Hero/Inkling route the Miis are going to do the trick for me.
@backup368
Because Mario Kart Deluxe 8 is not made by Intelligent Systems.
Nintendo EPD added villager, Isabelle, Link and the Inklings into Mario Kart 8 Deluxe which was made by Nintendo EPD. The same guys that also made the games:
Legend of Zelda: Triforce Heroes, Breath of the Wild and its sequel, Splatoon 2 and Animal Crossing New Leaf and new Horizons. Might as well argue when they added Pac-Man, Ms. Pac Man, Ghosts, Mametchi and Don-Chan due to Bandai Namco. Let's also not forget that SE is the only company with 2 characters and none of them have been base roster, while BN, Capcom, Sega and Konami of all companies did.
Also where's Gamefreak's Pikachu, Eevee and HAL's Kirby?
And when they refer to stingy they refer to lending out their characters. A lot of SE fans knew that when Ultimate was announced the most they were going to get from FFVII were the same thing as in wiiu and 3ds they even know that rumors of a SE newcomer in the base roster was fake. The reason why many fans believe that they are stingy? They have done so before with their own crossover game Dissidia, 012 and NT despite the fact that they make it where only protagonists get priority and if the protagonist is not in the game no other content will be added and even then support for party members in crossovers is considered a miracle (hence why we also got 0 songs and spirits from other FF titles).
Lara Croft in Brawlhalla is basically a glorified costume for another character who has the same moveset, not only that she belongs to western branch of Square Enix. Those guys are about as lax as the Enix branch in Japan and even then Hero only came with 2 Midi songs per character because the composer is a xenophobe.
I'm looking forward to the ARMS character, I tried the game out when they had the free trial thing and liked it. I plan to buy it soon so whoever the character is I will get it for sure.
@LightningDragon "Because Mario Kart Deluxe 8 is not made by Intelligent Systems.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate isn't made by Intelligent Systems either. If they only had a few characters to choose from, why not it be from Nintendo's other best-selling series?
"Also where's Gamefreak's Pikachu, Eevee and HAL's Kirby."
Game Freak is treated like a 2nd party to Nintendo where they would need time and paperwork in order to use the Pokemon IP. Kirby is no hit like Splatoon, Animal Crossing, and Zelda have been. This wasn't supposed to be Super Smash Kart.
"They have done so before with their own crossover game Dissidia, 012 and NT despite the fact that they make it where only protagonists get priority and if the protagonist is not in the game no other content will be added and even then support for party members in crossovers is considered a miracle (hence why we also got 0 songs and spirits from other FF titles)."
If you're a Smash Bros. fan, you're used to getting more content with each character. In other fighting games, you basically have only 1 guest character and one music track from a new stage. You typically don't need more than that.
"Lara Croft in Brawlhalla is basically a glorified costume for another character who has the same moveset, not only that she belongs to western branch of Square Enix. Those guys are about as lax as the Enix branch in Japan"
How many music tracks? Zero. That is two less than what Cloud came with in Super Smash Bros.
"and even then Hero only came with 2 Midi songs per character because the composer is a xenophobe."
How does this make any sense?
@backup368
-"Super Smash Bros. Ultimate isn't made by Intelligent Systems either. If they only had a few characters to choose from, why not it be from Nintendo's other best-selling series?"
Because the 1st and 2nd party characters that are added have a future with Nintendo or are a part of Nintendo's history (Such as R.O.B., Wii Fit Trainer, Duck Hunt). I may not like FE but even I know that they have a 100% chance of being supported by Nintendo and IE again in the future despite the fact that they have a new rotating cast every game. IE will always find a way to use someone like Chrom again. Unlike let's say Legend of Zelda which always features Links, Zeldas or Ganons and their incarnations while characters like Midna (who isn't as respected by her developers as fans think they do) are thrown away by the end of their games and rarely appear again the only chance of her ever appearing again being a remake.
"Game Freak is treated like a 2nd party to Nintendo where they would need time and paperwork in order to use the Pokemon IP. Kirby is no hit like Splatoon, Animal Crossing, and Zelda have been. This wasn't supposed to be Super Smash Kart."
Because you mentioned why FE is not in Mario Kart
Remember Post #57 "If what you are saying is true then how come Fire Emblem characters were never a thought in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe?"
"Game Freak is treated like a 2nd party to Nintendo where they would need time and paperwork in order to use the Pokemon IP. Kirby is no hit like Splatoon, Animal Crossing, and Zelda have been. This wasn't supposed to be Super Smash Kart."
They would have to both have to apply paperwork as well due to the transition. Nintendo EPD cannot use FE freely despite being first party. Happens a lot in many entertainment companies.
"If you're a Smash Bros. fan, you're used to getting more content with each character. In other fighting games, you basically have only 1 guest character and one music track from a new stage. You typically don't need more than that"
And if you're a SE you get used to their higher ups making sure that fans get barebones content even in crossovers. Not only that Dissidia is all SE first party and have confirmed that the addition of guests in Dissidia is reduntant. Despite knowing that it would make them more money.
How does this make any sense?
In Square Enix the ones that officially own the songs are the composers and not the companies. The composer for DQ Sugiyama is best known for not giving DQ games orchestrated versions of his song. Orchestral songs are even rarer in the west. Western fans found this odd until he started getting political by denying Japanese war crimes as well as stating Xenophobic statements. SE had to issue a public apology but due to his position cannot fire him.
When the Deluxe Edition was announced fans found it a miracle that the game came with orchestral music despite the PS4 version not having it.
"I may not like FE but even I know that they have a 100% chance of being supported by Nintendo and IE again in the future despite the fact that they have a new rotating cast every game."
Yeah, you should expect more Fire Emblem games like you should expect more Kirby and Yoshi games. They could have added "Yarn Yoshi" to "promote" Yoshi's Woolly World that only sold 1.17 million copies on the Wii U. Kirby & the Rainbow Curse doesn't even have concrete sales info.
"Because you mentioned why FE is not in Mario Kart
Remember Post #57 "If what you are saying is true then how come Fire Emblem characters were never a thought in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe?"
They were allowed to use Kirby's likeness. If you scanned a Kirby amiibo, then you got a Kirby racing outfit. This wasn't the case with any Fire Emblem character.
"They would have to both have to apply paperwork as well due to the transition. Nintendo EPD cannot use FE freely despite being first party. Happens a lot in many entertainment companies."
And apparently, they didn't want to.
"And if you're a SE you get used to their higher ups making sure that fans get barebones content even in crossovers. Not only that Dissidia is all SE first party and have confirmed that the addition of guests in Dissidia is reduntant."
That game had 38 characters total, all from the same series. Not bad for being the first ever in a series.

I don't see how being xenophobic means he's not willing to grant the rights to more of his music.
@backup368

Yeah I was disappointed by that too and even when they added the crafted version they eliminated my favorite palette swap. I was also hoping for a Yoshi villain but knew they would be overshadowed by other candidates.
"They were allowed to use Kirby's likeness. If you scanned a Kirby amiibo, then you got a Kirby racing outfit. This wasn't the case with any Fire Emblem character."
I remember but Nintendo EPD were also responsible for the production of several Kirby games alongside HAL.
"That game had 38 characters total, all from the same series. Not bad for being the first ever in a series."
The game did start well with 22 followed by Dissidia 012 with Kain, Gilgamesh, Tifa, Laguna (the odd choice), Yuna, Vaan (despite the dev team wanted to add Balthier instead), Prishe, Lightning and Feral Chaos. for 31 base.
Then came the Arcade version with 14 characters and then NT 28 base roster. Followed by odd DLC choices such as making Snow Villiers a villain for some reason and some veterans. That DLC costumes each priced around $12-15. At the same time stripping the game of features that fans like in favor for Esports. And a butchered story with progression methods that are similar to a phone game.
"I don't see how being xenophobic means he's not willing to grant the rights to more of his music"
Xenophobia is only one of the reasons, the other being he believes that adding orchestral tracks will affect the sales of his CDs and concerts (which are exclusive to Japan)
Basically he does grant music just only MIDI tracks.
Unfortunately this is one of the reasons why those that try to get into the series get turned off because of the tracks.
Just don't show a purple and yellow chair, otherwise the Nintendo world will go wild!
Sakurai on a picture of Cloud (Smash picture contest): "The Final fantasy 7 remake looks sweet". Epic trolling of mister Sakurai (or is he?)!
@Dpullam I actually think they do that on purpose. Free publicity and all.
"ARM-Chair". Brilliant
@sanderev I feel the same way, I just think it is funny.
