Cuphead has been ported across to the Nintendo Switch and even featured as a Mii Fighter costume in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, and now the next step is to transform the run 'n gun platformer into a Netflix series.
Yes, in case you didn't already know, last July Netflix announced it would be releasing an animated series called The Cuphead Show! - starring both Cuphead and his brother Mugman. Netflix has now shared a first-look:
https://twitter.com/NXOnNetflix/status/1276500461491757057
As noted in the short clip, Tru Valentino will be voicing Cuphead and Frank Todaro is taking on the role of Mugman.
According to Netflix, the series will follow the misadventures of the two characters from the hit video game. There's no mention of a release date, but apparently it's "coming soon" to the popular streaming platform.
What do you think of this animation so far, based on the above peek? Leave a comment below.

I dislike that they made a ren and stimpy style cartoon about a game that’s a tribute to rubberhose cartoons.
Besides that it still looks good though.
look how they massacred my boy
Where the heck is that DLC?
Looks nothing like the game -.-
One of the few times that a tv show might actually be a good idea.
Yeah, I'll be watching that!
Where's my first look at the physical release of the game?
So many opinions about a show that hasn't released. Amazing.
Looks cool. I'll be sure to check it out while waiting for the physical release of the game.
they can't voice cuphead and mugman..........they aren't cups
I think it looks pretty good. It's worth noting that accurately replicating the look and feel of a 1930's cartoon is extremely difficult. That's partially why the game's release kept getting delayed for years--and probably why the DLC is taking so long. One of the brothers who created the game even jokingly stated that if he and Studio MDHR were making the cartoon themselves, it would never get finished. I think the animation style looks good for what it is, and I have high hopes for this.
Also, is it just me, or does that narrator in the beginning sound like Charles Martinet? Specifically the voice he uses when narrating the Runner games?
This looks fantastic
Didn't even know this was happening. Can't wait to check it out
Wow this looks amazing!
@darkswabber Why do you hate that? If it's good it's good. Why does it matter?
Shame they couldn’t get the 1930’s cartoon style down. I’ll check back when it starts getting some reviews.
I love the style of this and cannot wait 😊
@Crockin I never said I hate it. I said I dislike that they changed the artstyle, but I also said it still looks good to me.
I’m allowed to dislike a aspect of something I think looks good.
@darkswabber and you loved that show
@gcunit I agree! I’ve been holding off buying this because they announced a physical edition.
@darkswabber you did say hate, but you edited your comment lol. Anyway, ren and stimpy was intentionally and heavily influenced by fleischer/rubber hose style cartoons. 👋
@darkswabber No you either love or hate something in this black and white wasteland!
😛
@Crockin “ Kricfalusi received inspiration for Ren from a black and white photograph of a chihuahua in a sweater next to a woman's feet.”
I always got the impression that Ren and Stimpy was its own thing, as it always stood out on its own.
@SoManyHaveDied I haven’t played the game, so I’m unfamiliar with the lore, but they look pretty cup-like.
@TG16_IS_BAE that would be an uninformed opinion
@Alucard83 I’m actually not the biggest fan of ren and stimpy. But I really like old rubberhose cartoons, I wad obsessed with steamboat willy as a child.
@Crockin I did not edit my comment?!
Also a edited comment has a mark that it was edited with a timr stamp, mine doesn’t have one.
@TG16_IS_BAE yeah, I said something super normal and not weird at all and I’m being called a fraud for supposedly “editing” my comment.
Why does it have to be black and white? It wasn’t weird at all what I said right? Just that I disliked a change in artstyle but still stated I liked it.
@darkswabber You didn’t say anything weird! What’s weird is how people descended upon your original post! Caught me off guard too lol
@Crockin Oh sorry, I just pulled that quote from an interview with the creator of Ren and Stimpy based on what inspired its creation. 😂
@TG16_IS_BAE Inspired the two characters yes, but not, you know, everything else? If you think he pulled that wild cartoon just completely out of his ass, you are uninformed. The whole point of the show was that it was a handmade cartoon that employed the techniques of classic Fleischer/Warner Bros, and allowed more freedom for the artists. John k's animator Utopia actually turned out to be a nightmare due to his own ego, but that's a whole other story that involves a smidge of underage grooming to top it off.
@Crockin Hahahahah....haha.....Hahahah!!!!
Oh boy.
My original opinion: “ren and Stimpy always felt like it stood on its own.”
Gets morphed into: “blah blah blah pulling out of someone’s butt.”
Usually when people think that something “stands out on its own,” that’s a compliment to its originality. You can put the weapons down, nobody is trying to hurt you 🤣🤣🤣
@darkswabber Honestly though, that Crockin guy is out for blood on this site, he has a reputation for jumping down people’s throats for whatever reason.
@TG16_IS_BAE What can I say? Its fun to troll you. Also I AM out for blood on this site
Makes sense if you ponder the game's success plus the Poketoons new series and the Looney Toons revival. The Algorithm likes this 👍
@TG16_IS_BAE that’s good to know. I usually read the comments from articles I read and I never noticed it before. But that’s probably due to me usually reading positive interactions.
@Crockin Most people, when their arguments fall flat, resort to the “bruh I’m just trolling you.”
I get it, you’ve been quarantined for too long. Go on a long walk or something lmao
@darkswabber I too, try to focus on the positive interactions, but sometimes the flies like to buzz around lol
@TG16_IS_BAE thanks for weighing in🥰🥰
@Crockin You’re welcome, sweetheart. Now go troll someone else, otherwise you’ll make my adoring fan jealous.
@TG16_IS_BAE get off my turf street rat
@TG16_IS_BAE i'm talking in relation to the whole "______ can't voice this person because they aren't black/white/a cup etc."
@Crockin I already told you, I’m a one follower kind of guy. You’ll have to pander to someone else if you want to be an adoring fan. I believe in you, though, and you’ve got a great personality.
@SoManyHaveDied OH!!! Haha big “woosh” on my part!
@Not_Soos Exactly. It took the creative and financial horsepower of Disney to produce a new Steamboat Willie style short in the style of Cuphead:
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Get_a_Horse!
A full series like that was probably beyond the scope of what Netflix could do.
It'll be interesting to see the final product. I'm a fan of rubber hose cartoons, and by extension hand-drawn animation.
I think it has too much modern influence in the facail expressions and acting
@Benji80
I hope so.
All I see is Ren and stimpy.
Ok but when is the cuphead physical release coming soon
😓 Cuphead: A wonderful game with tight controls, appetizing old-school difficulty, and a stunning, hand-drawn animation style with plentiful gorgeous character designs.
Makes perfect sense to have an animated series based on this game... But the character designs are not the same as the game, and neither is the animated style. Soooo... What's the point? Hard pass 👎👎👎
"You want a Cuphead cartoon? Cool! Have a Ren & Stimpy! They were influenced by Max Fleisher like Cuphead!!!"
No thanks Netflix. I'm so over that bait & switch BS.
I've still never played this. I'm still waiting for the physical copy
@Benji80 In all seriousness I'm not sure if you're trolling us or not. Anti-straight male propaganda... Do you have any examples?
Looks really good. Although you can see where they used flash and others where it is fluid 2D-Animation.
Interesting. Although I think the issue is that while it LOOKS like 1930s animation.....it doesn't MOVE like 1930s animation.
The game understood that difference.
@Benji80 wait, what? If you don't play games, then why are you here? The site is literally called nintendolife, with a very strong connection to video games, and that's that.
At this point it's like that regular Joe who walks into a biker bar.
@Benji80 Dude you need to chill, If you listen to anything that's on TV and think it's serious, then your living in a fantasy world. Enjoy your own media and forget everything else. Do you see me listening to pop music and think that it'll effect my genre of taste, or my way of life, of course not. 1 I won't listen to it, and 2 those people that do I generally stay away from, there very easy to point out.
@Benji80 It's Netflix so it's possible.
Looks exciting — I’m hoping the writing makes for a fun show and is on the quality level of Rick & Morty, Futurama, Aqua Teen, etc. If so, they’ll have a real winner here.
@Fido007 Why are you defending Netflix it's cancer?
@Benji80 @Fido007 @Cool_Squirtle He's not wrong Netflix is filled with far left propaganda.
@Crockin Why can't people hate something, why do people have to consume product and wait for next product?
@GameBOB64 who says I'm defending anything, if that's where their viewership is then they are going to supply their demand, if people want to create that type of medium to feed off the backs of that kind viewership they are entitled to do so, none of it means you MUST support that medium. I don't support them, if a person has half a brain they'll understand, if not then why would you want to hang out with those people? That's what it all boils down too.
@GameBOB64 ah yes, this was the Anti-Straight Male Propaganda he was talking about, a bunch of completely unrelated stuff
I agree with everyone that the art style is not what I was hoping for, since I LOVE old cartoons, but I don't agree with all of the fighting. Just take a deep breath.
really outstanding comment section everyone
@Francema has a good point, but if that's the case, I wonder why they're not leaning into the old-toony thing more, even if not going the fully hand-drawn route
Prefer the old cartoon style from the original game.
I feel the art style is close enough that I get the feel of the game and I know instantly who all the characters are. If it’s entertaining then it’s all good by me. I’m not a purist.
Too soon to make a judgement.
