After two (sort of) sequels, the original Xenoblade Chronicles is heading to Nintendo Switch under the swanky new guise of Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition, and we've had a right ruddy good go at it. It's not just a shiny new coat of paint though, there's also a brand new bonus story mission called Future Connected, and we've also had a pop at that along with it's slightly altered and adjusted mechanics.
Make sure to check out the video above to hear all we have to say and see the game in action, and leave a comment below letting us know what you think of this souped-up Switch port.

Already preloaded, very excited!
"...and we've had a right ruddy good go at it."
Scrolled up to check if it was @AlexOlney and yep. 😂
I'm really glad you can turn battle dialogue off now too.
Looking forward to it! Have it on the Wii but never sank too much time into it. Was lucky enough to get the collectors edition too..
Can't wait for the return of the greatest rpg to ever be made. The upgrade looks amazing too. Really feeling this definitive edition.
Aww man, super hyped for this. Animal Crossing, Streets of Rage, Hatsune Miku and now the definitive edition of arguably the greatest modern JRPG. 2020 has been awful for my social life so far, but a great year for games.
Getting excited for this after playing hours of XB 2 and Tora. I missed the Wii era cause was out "playstationing" it.
Do we know the resolution yet, please?
I posted this before listening, so someone might see it
@Dezzy
It looks like it might be 720-900p docked, but I'm no expert. It's definitely a huge upgrade compared to the original though.
I played it on 3DS before, and it was great on that, so this will be quite the upgrage. I got my pre-order in for the Definitive Works edition. I wish our version of the collector's set was like your UK one. NOA could have at least included a steel book to go alongside XBC2.
I like Alex quite a bit. Lovely individual. But he insulted Melia, so a dislike was earned.
Read on the comments here you can now turn off the battle dialogue/banter. I’m sold 100% on this now. I know it sounds dumb but I’ve gotten some flack from my wife that it was annoying when I played the 3DS one. Then I got hyper aware of it and it started to bug even me. It was enough to make me not want to get this even though i already have it preordered. Anywho, this is great news for me and anyone in the same boat as me.
What's funny with remasters is how your memory plays with your impression of the original game. Often, the remaster is how i remember the original looked only to discover how much better the remaster is when booting up the old system.
My only problem with this game is that it's not in my Switch yet!
Don't do this to me, Alex!!
@crudfish never quite got the differences in regional collectors editions. Thankfully, in England (well, Europe), we’ve been treated to some spectacular collectors editions over the years - my fave of recent times was Samus Returns, with its game boy cart inspired steelbook, art book, soundtrack CD, morph ball keyring, pin badge, and download code on the eShop for the original Metroid 2.
Absolutely glorious - just wish more collectors editions were given this much love.
Hope this game will sell so well and we'll get Xenoblade Chronicles X as far as possible on Switch.
@Makiawel I'm currently playing Xenoblade Chronicles X and would like to see it get another chance on Switch. Can't imagine it without the gamepad though because it makes such good use of it, there's always ways around it I guess.
I have the original Xenoblade Chronicles but never got around to playing it because I knew it was a very long game. Loving the quality of life improvements, especially when it comes to collecting items.
Still haven't decided if I want to buy it. My heart says yes but my backlog says no.
lol I'm glad I'm not the only person who is still confused by the affinity chart. Also good to hear they added some QoL improvements to the basic gameplay, like marking quest-relevant drops, or improving your navigational tools in the environment.
@Knighty_IX Thanks for linking those previews. It's pretty funny how wildly different the impressions on the visual fidelity of docked mode gameplay are between those two websites.
It sounds like handheld mode might not look terrible this time, which is a good thing.
Shut your fat mouth about Melia. She is the best character ever!
I went ahead and beat the original game last year on the Wii, as I was about 60-70 hours in when the remake was announced. I thought it was good, but a revision of the graphics to HD will probably bump it up to great. I also hope they address the tedious and not very rewarding side quests. As compared to games coming-out today, they seemed from another gaming era, pre-red dead redemption which really nailed the side quest. Music wise, this game nails it on the head and is a 10/10. Some of the grandest music I've heard in gaming. Anyways, I'd recommend the game to anyone who loves JRPG as it is an immense and epic tale.
@TheLightSpirit I'd rather hear bad voice acting in a language I understand than having to read through the entire dialogue of that game! Hell no! The voice acting had some niggles, the fight dialogue was quite funny to me but apparently annoyed others, but overall it was serviceable. My wife loved the little Nopon guys and their voices for example.
It's Reyn Time!
That clock needs to be a real thing!
how much do you think it will sell?
."To you!
To me!
Allright!
There we go!
To me!
To you!
There we go!
To me!
Allright!
There we go!"
I'd like to just mention I love this game so effing much I cannot wait.
Got my collector's works edition pre-ordered. Can't wait
Have this on 3DSXL but never really finished it. Now waiting for my Works edition to come in.
Have the WiiU version as well. Only managed to finish Switch Xenoblade Chronicle 2. By the way, I bought the special edition as well for WiiU and XC2. Love the series very much.
Unfortunate that it sounds like Future Connected is a bit of a tack-on addition, but my goodness, I can’t wait to see how the rest of this version looks and plays.
@TheLightSpirit I don't think the voice acting was terrible, I think the script was just really bad in some areas. It's been a while since I played the original, but it felt at times they were bludgeoning you to death with unnecessary exposition. I remember one scene where they said monado about 12 times in quick succession(slight exaggeration). I think it might be amplified for me as I'm from the UK, and some of the things they said sounded really unnatural. Also Dunban sounded a lot like Matt Berry, which made everything he said unintentionally hilarious.
The Last Story had the same studio do the VO, and the characters come across way more natural in that game
@andyc777
I remember seeing that one (Samus Returns). It looked amazing.
The game has the red Xenogears logo in it. Maybe the Future Connected has a tie in for Xenogears?
