It's always nice when a game offers some extra goodies for existing fans. In the case of Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition, players who already have a Xenoblade Chronicles 2 save on their Nintendo Switch will receive 100,000 gold to kickstart their adventure.
Destructoid's Chris Carter explains his own discovery of this in detail:
After booting up Xenoblade Chronicles Definitive Edition on Switch for the first time, I noticed a little bonus pop-up right before I was able to take control of Shulk. Dubbed a "XC2 Player Bonus," you'll get a free 100,000G (gold) starting sum if you have a save file for Xenoblade Chronicles 2.
Interestingly, this is an optional bonus - meaning you don't have to accept the money if you don't want to. Keep in mind, though, this is a one-time offer - so if you decline it you won't be able to redeem it after you've started your game.

I'll probably turn it down, I'm glad it's optional and we even get a freebie!
That's a nice little nod to the fans. I wonder how much that money will get you.
Cool stuff! Don't think I'll use it, but it's nice that it's there.
I still find it funny how GameXplain said this over a week ago and now its news.
Why is the title "Returning Players" when XC has been on 2 previous systems - Wii and New 3DS - but people who played that game, you know the actual returning players, don't appear to get anything but if you played an entirely different game you get something?
Most be lost in translation. 😝
@rjejr they probably meant returning players to the franchise within the Switch ecosystem.
I’ve never played Xenoblade Chronicles. Is it good? Would you suggest the Definitive Edition or the sequel?
@BabyYoshi65 I personally can't speak for Xenoblade Chronicles (though I will be able to in about a day!), but Xenoblade Chronicles 2 is fantastic. Probably in like my top 10 favorite games, and I'm not even a huge JRPG guy. Definitely worth a shot. I hear constant good things about Xenoblade Chronicles though, and most of those who've played both 1 and 2 prefer the original. Xenoblade Chronicles X is also great, but I didn't get as into it, though I'd like to give it another shot.
@DriftFDs Maybe these games will be on my Switch wish list next. How much is it?
@BabyYoshi65 I can speak for XB1 and two.. and X ..... they are all great... but 1 is a masterpiece you can’t go without trying. It was called the JRPG of the decade for a reason. X is amazing but a totally different beast. 2 is my least favorite, but even saying that, that game is amazing.
Most of the best gear in this game tends to be quest rewards. Still, I wont say no to a freebie.
I wonder how 1 time this is. If I were to restart my save at some point, would I have the option to decide again?
@BabyYoshi65 pretty sure all of them are 60 USD. XC2 has a standalone DLC for 40 USD as well. I wouldn't expect a sale any time soon either with how Nintendo handles the prices of their first party games lol
@DriftFDs Yep, I looked it up. Alas, here in Canada, it’s $80. 😭
@ferroreo Well yeah, that's probably what they "meant", but that doesn't mean it's reads that way. Plus, if they played XC2 before XC then they aren't returning, they're going back in time. People who played Xc first might be returning to that universe to play XC2, but it just doens't work for me to say people who played the second game are returning to play the first, especially not when the first game has already been on 2 consoles and those should be the people who are getting something for double dipping. They are the ones who are truly 'returning" to a game they've already played, and presumably already paid for. Gamestop was selling XC USED in the US for $90. They deserve to go bankrupt.

@rjejr You are overthinking this way too much. You played XC2 on the console? You count as a returning players and that's it.
And the sum works as a shoutout in itself, too.
@BabyYoshi65 both. They take place in different (although not necessarily independent) realms and each has its own traits on offer, but they share a lot of strengths in common, too.
Price-wise, both are standard $60 tier (plus XC2's season pass which I'd definitely recommend to add to the experience - more blades including some of my personal faves, more side quests and stuff... oh, and a whole shorter but separate and meaty prequel game with its own story, tweaked battle system and whatnot); like most first party titles, XC2 recurrently gets a third of that off on sales, and so does the DLC... although not always simultaneously. Although I ended up just paying the bulk of the pass's price with gold coins.😆
@fafonio 100%agree
Yeah I'm glad that you can turn it down, using this sort of bonuses always feel more like cheating to me.
@DriftFDs - I'd go 2, X, 1. I'm very early in the game so far so I can't pass proper judgement but this is my initial thoughts.
They should've add Shulk amiibo support...
If they were going to include a bonus for XC2 players then I could think of a few more interesting ways to do it.
But I wasn't expecting anything at all, so I'll gratefully accept 100,000G!
Especially since I've already beaten the game once. Methinks I deserve a little boost~
@rjejr I know you're absolutely right because I myself played the original one when it first came out. However, I know the Switch has no way to know whether you played XC in the Wii or not, so I knew it would only check within its own internal storage. And well. I have never been a fan of GameStop, so I agree 100% with you on that particular front.
@theinstruct0r I don't read GameXplain so this is news to me. Hilarious!
Glad it's optional, I don't want it.
Great, i will surely collect that pretty gold i love XC, i plan to go throug it again, but time is a valuable resorce for me by now, any saved hours of gold collecting its a blessing.
@ferroreo I read the article very curious how they were going to know that I already played the entire game - about 150 hours - on Wii U.
And yes, I did play the Wii disc on Wii U as that's what was hooked up to my TV at the time, the Wii is in my son's room.
I played Xenogears on PS1, that should count as a "returning player" too, same "xeno" heritage and the game that started it all. Also played Xenosaga 1-3. They owe me like 300,000 gold at least. 😉
I was not lucky enough to have played Xenogears and Xenosaga. I heard at some point the publisher thought of bringing all of them to the Switch, but ended up thinking it was not profitable. I wish that weren't the case, as I have only read about those games.
Better yet, instead give us option to start game with either Godfrey or Jin as a blade to use x-)
@SSJW ""Returning players" is probably marketing mumbo jumbo ripped straight from the PR text."
Fair point. And I think it's a fair point that the person writing the article - this isn't just a copy & paste on Facebook - writes the article, and the title, in such a way that it's easily understandable in the modern gaming vernacular.
And if someone today says - "I think I'm going to return to playing Wticher 3." and somebody asks them 'Well how far did you get last time?" and they reply "I never started it, but I played a video game once in 1997, so I'm returning to video games w/ "Witcher 3" well that doesn't make any sense now does it?
