As promised, Huntdown - an '80s-inspired bounty-hunting pixel art action comedy game - has blasted onto Nintendo Switch today. A new launch trailer has been released to celebrate.
Set in a bleak dystopian future and full of gorgeous-looking 16-bit pixel art graphics and hand-drawn animations, Huntdown could well be an ideal - and particularly gritty and violent - throwback to the wonderful action movies and pop culture of the '80s. It's said to feature "fluid action-packed 60-FPS gameplay and an epic '80s soundtrack", which all sounds rather good to us.
If you need to catch up on this one, here's a list of key features:
Key Features:
Two player local co-op
Three legendary bounty hunters to play as:
- Anna Conda: Ex-commando and firearms expert. A loose-cannon trained to assassinate without question or mercy.
- John Sawyer: Special forces cop who left the law behind. This scarred veteran has lost so many limbs in combat he’s half robot.
- Mow Man: Modified recon droid, stolen and empowered with banned software. Trades bodies for cold hard cash.20 levels: Gritty, neon soaked, graffiti strewn 80s cityscapes to cleanse, each with their own infamous gang boss to terminate and bounty to collect.
Unique gangs to target:
- Hoodlum Dolls: Violent feral punks winning the gang war with the toothless authorities
- Misconducts: Organised hockey hooligans, experts in robbery and extortion with a penchant for explosives
- The Heatseekers: Murderous motorcycle club. These rockabilly villains style themselves on the centurions of Ancient Rome
- NO.1 Suspects: Masters of discipline and organised crime. Martial arts experts, these slick psychopaths control the night through their casinos and nightclubsChoose your weapon: Confiscate machine guns, laser weapons, katanas, grenades and more, and turn them on their owners. Stab, shoot and explode your way through swathes of gangs and bosses and collect your bounty.

I want this game so bad and I’m tempted to buy it right now but I also want to wait until reviews start popping up. Any idea when a review on this site will be posted?
@Nerdfather1 There are a few reviews out already (all positive) I posted links to the in the Huntdown thread on the forum
I’ve just read 5 other reviews and they are all positive. I really want to know what you guys have to say about this one. Jet Lancer and Huntdown today? I’d have say, today was a good day.
It's received 8 (Destructoid), 10 (Game Reactor), 5/5 (Daily Star) so far.
@MarioBrickLayer Awesome! Thanks. I’m definitely going to pick it up then.
This game looks like everything I want to be a part of. The 80s style, pixel graphics that actually look like some effort went into them, and the action looks intense.
"He's been a man...since he was a boy." I LOL'd.
I'm a fan of side scrolling action games but damn why can't someone do it like Goemon's Great Adventure did it? Would love a HD remake of that or just straight sequel.
picked it up and will play it in an hour! yeah
@Nerdfather1 I’m exactly the same and it’s been on my wish list since I saw the trailer. I’ll just wait for the review first though. I was going to buy Spirit Of The North on the day until I read the review 😱😱
Price?!
(This should always be posted)
@TimboSlice $20 bucks, here in NA
@MattAllsopp I read some other reviews, particularly from The Sixth Asia, and it sold me on the game. I went ahead and purchased it, and I’m excited to play it soon!
Gamereactor scored it a 10/10..
"Everything he owns is made out of metal."
What a fantastic trailer.
Loving it so far. Oozes personality and so much attention to detail on so many levels. Clearly a labour of love
i am playing right now and it’s just great! so many. details and much love went into this piece of work. for this price it’s a must buy.....
Picked it up after I found a youtuber who gave it a 9.5 and it finally released on the NA eshop. After 3 years of waiting I must say it is exactly what I expected. The atmosphere is pitch perfect. It feels like a loveletter to every R-rated action and sci-fi movie of my childhood. Keep an eye out in the burning movie theatre for posters of ALIENS, THE THING, THE TERMINATOR, and more.
Just reminded me, when is Sunset Riders coming?
I LOVE that game.
Just had a quick play and I must say I’m impressed so far. It’s a love letter to 80s films and sounds great with earphones. Does anybody have the CRT filter on or off?
earphones indeed work great with the game!
It's perfect so far. Definitely recommend to anyone who liked Blackthorn or Rolling Thunder and the 80's vibe is played to perfection. It's got a sense of humour but it's never laughing at the source material, just making the same sort of jokes they made in the classic 80's films that inspired it.
The soundtrack is also a slice of synth perfection.
Definitely an homage to many 80s side scrolling fighting games. "Mow Man"? I may have to get this one. As much as I hate digital I just ordered a new SD card so I can start adding games again.
I don't recall hearing about this game before. I thought the trailer was really well done. Great writing and narration and lots of game-play footage. I've seen too many trailers that spend way too much time using a lot of words to say very little, all while showing very little of the actual games. The pixel art in this one looks really nice too. I'll have to take a deeper look at it.
Yup, I'm in. Just downloaded from the eShop. Hope I can see enough of the gorgeous art on a Lite.
Fun game so far, feels like a modernized Rolling Thunder. The voice acting for the 3rd boss is spot on.
One of the rare examples of indie titles which is not style over substance. While the style (art style, atmosphere, presentation, etc) is great, the ganeplay is also very balanced. A flawless indie title.
Was already on my GOTY watchlist and now is 100% on the shortlist. Was not expecting the insanely good voice acting.
Still on the fence? Here is my first play gameplay.
Heavy Robocop vs Terminator vibes to the whole thing. A gem so soon after SOR4. We are lucky people!
Through with the hoodlum dolls(hard difficulty) dying over & over.
Reminds me of alien storm
i watched that trailer several times for major chuckles for days. i’m getting it when i have the time (too many games and videos to get through)
@Mario_Fart I have a lite and it looks great 😊👍🏻
Well this looks fantastic! I've added it to my Wishlist for now, but that trailer was awesome. I genuinely laughed out loud several times.
