Nintendo recently filed a patent that intends to prevent damage to IC tags within soft toys.
As weird as this may sound, it seems to actually refer to the NFC feature contained within plush amiibo. One example of this is the Yarn Yoshi amiibo which was released in 2015.
A similar patent dating back to 31st March of the same year (not long after the arrival of the yarn amiibo) was also rejected by the Japan Patent Office.
Here's the full summary of the patent, courtesy of Japanese Nintendo:
The requisites of the application are a stuffed toy with an outer surface and a filler. The bottom portion of the stuffed toy is a flat surface with an IC tag attached to this area, which has been reinforced, and a decorative area.
The reinforced area must have a hardness that is harder to bend than the IC tag therefore prevents the IC tag itself from bending. The outer material is a second material which is softer than the first material. The reinforced area is sandwiched between the cover and decorative areas.
The user then holds the bottom portion of the stuffed toy over a reader / writer or sits the bottom of the toy on the reader / writer. The tag information can then be read or rewritten.

Woah, this article has a cool colour scheme! Not sure if I have seen this one before. Is it Amiibo specific?
Half life 3 confirmed.
Or yona amibo ?
More Amiibo please.
1-Up the bum, no harm done!
I'm so sorry...
This is good news. Amiibo need to be more toy and less statue that unlocks extra stuff. Honestly, there is so much you could do with Amiibo's toys to life concept. Skylanders and Star Wars barely scratched it's potential. At least LEGO is on the right track
Animal crossing new horizons plush Amiibo incoming.
More Plushie Amiibo in the future?
@johnvboy
Huzzah !!
ACNH plushie Amiibos ?!
It will be more than 400 plushies !! 🤯😆
@Anti-Matter,
I would expect the more popular ones first.
I know it says they are in a hard shell to protect them but is that shell waterproof? Plushies can get grubby and dirty so you’d need to wash them.
The picture of a terrified elephant and where to insert a mushroom is thoroughly unsettling.....
My house is cluttered up with amiibo for Zelda. They should all store game saves, then they would be more useful to keep around. I would like to see them storing small mini games, perhaps snes games or something, wallpapers, themes or other bonuses too. I don't like the trend of needing them to unlock content on games you paid money for already.
@Moistnado
Yeah. Same.
And at least a decent meta game that allow to do something with everyone of them... a match-3 with amiibo powered power-up ?? An idle game with amiibo ‘s unlocked objectives ? It’s so simple, I can’t understand Nintendo hasn’t understood that...
@Moistnado : Storing save data via amiibo isn't feasible for most games considering their extremely limited capacity (which is approximately 8 kilobytes). And likewise, the amiibo wouldn't be able to store the unlockable content itself unless it were to be compressed beyond recognition, hence why the unlockable content will need to be contained within the software with which the amiibo is compatible.
To put these limitations into perspective, you would need approximately 180 amiibo to be able to store a mere 3 ½ inch floppy disk's worth of data!
@Silly_G yes,I know but they could manufacture new ones with a little more memory inside.
Animal Crossing soft toy amiibo please
Most of the time we see these patents they're years old and for something we've already seen but in a slightly different from. I think this one is nothing new.
::laughs in China::
I’d love for amiibo to actually have a use other than sitting on my shelf to be honest
I hope this doesn’t mean the Amiibo thing is going to continue. I shouldn’t need to buy figurines to unlock stuff in games.
The yarn Yoshi amiibos were some of my favorite in the series but they were so darn small. I’d love the chip technology in something more “huggable”
I thought they were trying to patent NFC in plush toys with protection at first until I read it properly. xD
So, it's basically an Amiibo patch with a plastic bubble protecting the chip under the top layer. Couldn't they just put it further in Yoshi's foot? Seems safer.
I got the Yarn Yoshi amiibo a while ago... it’s my 2nd favourite one behind the Mario 30th Anniversary one.
@Ooyah Yoshi specific I guess.
They should sell these IC tags without the stuffed animal.
@Anti-Matter Yes! Even if they did make amiibo on a lot of the villagers like last time, it would probably sell a lot!
...Especially a Raymond one.
I am immediately reminded of a hephalump seeing that.
Game Nintendo. Give us a good Skylanders-esque game that lets us utilize all amiibo.
@Ooyah I agree with that
