Mario is scheduled to make his silver screen debut in 2022. The last time we heard about this upcoming film was back in January when Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa said production was moving along smoothly.
So, how's it been doing since the coronavirus was declared a global pandemic? According to a source close to Illumination - the studio working on the movie - it's been an extremely productive period. It was also well prepared because it has "always" worked remotely. Here are the full details from Deadline:
Already because of the daily collaboration between their Paris- and Santa Monica-based producers, artists, designers, editors and many others, Illumination has been well prepared because they’ve always worked remotely.
A source close to Illumination described the past two months as an extremely productive, innovative and creative time at the company.
Furukawa has previously described the film as "one of the bigger examples" of Nintendo creating new opportunities for consumers to interact with its IP. Nintendo has also been "proactively involved" from development to production, and Mario's creator Shigeru Miyamoto is even co-producing the movie with Illumination CEO, Chris Meledandri.

I hope they don't use this virus as an excuse to make a terrible movie...
I have a bad feeling about this movie
"Your scientists were so preoccupied with whether or not they could, they didn't stop to think if they should."
-Ian Malcom (Jeff Goldblum), Jurassic Park
This movie is very important to Nintendo, I hope it will do well
It has a great team working on it so I believe it will be good
I imagine Illumination will make Toads the cute merchandise magnets..
that have the same amount of IQ points as they have spots on their head.
Illumination. Ew. Calling it now, there is a dance scene, fart joke, popular song in the trailer, etc. Don't get your hopes up.
I don't want to just hate this film out of the gate, but just knowing anyone involved with the Minions is working on it makes me uncomfortable. I do not want a Mario movie full of stupid humor.
What I mean by that is the kind of "popular" humor where we're just supposed to laugh at how stupid these characters are. "Oh look, they messed something up again, how funny!" Or "Oh look, he farted, let's all laugh because farts are quality humor!"
Some jokes like that are funny, but when that's the whole joke, that the characters are just stupid, it's not enjoyable. It's fine for a 10 minute cartoon, not a feature length film.
@theJGG These people don't need an excuse...
@Heavyarms55 I cannot say I'm their biggest fan either. I enjoy watching their films NOW to determine how dumb they really are. I hope they make a good movie but knowing these guys, they don't care about that, only making a tidy profit from at heart a mediocre movie, and a cheap one at that. (Think SING, where the same crocodile guy appears in every scene because of the laziness of the Mac Guff animators)
@Alpha-2002 This quote should appear at the start of the movie.
@theJGG The best part is that, because it's also from a Universal movie, it's not like they have to pay up for the rights to use it! 😂
One thing is for sure. It could not get any worse than the old Mario movie 🤣🤣
The Sonic movie put some heavy pressure on this goons. It would be terribly humiliating for Nintedo if Sonic surpass Mario in ticket revenue and/or critical reception.
@PBandSmelly
Sir, the Goombas are dancing again.
I don't want to judge straight away, but unfortunately I cannot and will not get my hopes up for anything from Illumination based on their track record, especially not a video game movie.
Also, it's been proven time and time again that video game movies just 👏do 👏not 👏work. I didn't see the Sonic movie, but from the trailer and plot description on Wikipedia, I can tell it's a joyless cliche'd mess, so don't ask me how disastrous a Mario movie from Illumination would be.
Mario will undoubtedly have a talking wise-cracking support character. I just hope the voice actor isn't as annoying as Cindi Lou Who from their Grinch adaptation, whose voice was so grating that I had to turn the movie off in the first act. Seriously annoying voice.
Edit: This movie better start with Mario jumping on the Minions.
@PBandSmelly @Toy_Link Ya know just because Illumination's own creations can be annoying, doesn't mean they are going to change Mario and turn Toads into minions clones, Nintendo already has the world and characters set, all they going to do is just make talk, Wario Ware Gold shown this can be good, and most people like mario and rabbids cutscenes Illumination has help make the rabbids, while they were just as annoying in the crossover, the Mario characters weren't so I don't see the big issue, it's not another live action film that almost little to do with mario
Silver screen debut? Did you guys forget the absolute masterpiece that was Super Mario Bros. (1993) with Eddie Valient himself Bob Hoskins!
I hope this project completely collapses; we don’t need another Mario movie and we certainly don’t need a Mario movie from Illumination Studios...
Please- just let this project die...
@The-Chosen-one the Super Mario Bros Movie is a stone cold classic compared to the entirety of Illumination Studio’s filmography...
I'm worried about Goombas being like Minions...
Could be worse...disney could take over on it and turn everything into a singing machine and 'cutesy' animation. No matter what, I'm thinking that studios should have done something, like, bringing a cartoon series back first. Super Mario Bros Super Show did pretty good and nintendo seemed to have plenty of cartoons in the past (Kirby, Donkey Kong, Captain N, Mario Bros 3, Mario World). Sometimes I think that would be a better test, before making a feature film that could possibly flop.
I'm looking forward to it. The Despicable Me films are entertaining films. If you're not fussed about the minions, there's a lot to enjoy. Also, assuming it will be like Despicable Me is like saying that if Dreamworks made it then Mario would automatically be a fat green bloke with a bad Scottish accent. Could be terrible, could be great. Remember when Sony decided to make an animated Spiderman film alongside what the MCU were doing and the Internet thought it was a really bad idea? Ditto when Warners decided to make a film about Lego. I don't expect this to be a classic, but I'm trying to keep an open mind.
I hope the film will also appear in my land, Romania, so that I can watch it at the cinema.
Does anyone think that Charles Martinet is or isn't gonna voice Mario? I think he will, because of his icon status.
Secretly hoping for a pleasant surprise from this but I don't have my hopes up.
@theJGG
He has to be lol he has a unique voice.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't production on Minions 2 stopped because of the coronavirus? Maybe they are actually trying to make a film worthy of our plumber here (inb4 this ages poorly).
French animation was healthy for Sonic.
Here's hoping they do good on Mario as well.
Reminds me of how the French Ministry of Culture officially made Miyamoto a knight of the Order of Arts and Letters. I'm sure they have asked his opinion and approval of every single second of this film.
I'm not totally surprised at the negativity in the comments to something we haven't even heard a plot synopsis on. Much less seen a single screenshot of. I also think what needs to be kept in mind is that Nintendo and Mario's creator are directly involved. So let's not act as if Nintendo has given Illumination the keys to the car and said "see ya later".
As for what I feel Illumination as a studio, they certainly aren't Pixar. But I've enjoyed their movies to varying degrees. Especially the three main Despicable Me movies. Having two little ones (and nieces and nephews) who eat all that stuff up, I've watched enough animated movies (outside of Disney/Pixar) to say that those movies (the Despicable Me movies) are much more than Minions and crude jokes. I also hope with DreamWorks now also being under Universal, some of the good stuff they've done in animation rubs off on Illumination or at least there's some crossover help done
@JLPick I think Disney (and specifically Pixar) would have absolutely done justice to Mario. That franchise is right up their wheelhouse
And all their animated movies aren't musicals or cutesy.
What's with all the negativity you joyless clouds?
Itsa gonna be great! Yippeee!
I'm still not sure about this movie. Super Mario, at least the main series that most people know, never had a focus on a story, which is something every movie needs, and Illumination isn't really a film studio that is known for high art. Not to say that their movies are bad, but they always do the bare minimum and never try to be better in terms of character designs, animation and storytelling. I think this movie will be okay at best.
Yeesh. I have some misgivings too, but overall I'm cautiously optimistic. How about we wait until the movie has a coherent plot and it's out for viewing before judging how bad it is, eh?
I can't wait for this film!!! It will be brilliant!!!!
@gcunit No it won't. Wait and watch me be right
Even though I’m not a fan of Illumination’s movies, I’ll try to keep an open mind on this movie. Not a lot of information has been revealed yet, so it’s a little to early too judge it.
I'm not looking forward to this movie, but I shouldn't care because I don't have to watch it. If it's animated (which looks like the case), it might not be so bad.
@theJGG I hope Charles Martinet doesn't do Mario's voice, but that's because I hate that voice. I still play Mario games despite it, but they'd be more fun for me if he didn't make annoying sounds every damn time I made him so much as jump!!
i hope to god that AMC allows Universal movies again before this releases. AMC was incredibly selfish,childish, and stupid with what they did
@ClassSonicSatAm
Illumination has no involvement with the Rabbids or the Mario&Rabbids crossover, Ubisoft created and has developed all the Rabbids games.
First game with Rabbids (Rayman Raving Rabbids) was released a year before Illumination was founded
@TheAwesomeBowser I’m not a fan of Sonic games or any of the characters, but I did enjoy the movie some. Also my children loved it, and they never played or heard of Sonic prior to seeing the movie. I also thought Detective Pickachu was decent film
So the next Zelda game (probably) gets delayed because of Covid-19, but we still get the Mario movie? Figures.
Debut? What on earth are you talking about?
Wow. What a bunch of downers we've got here in the comments! I'm willing to give this movie a chance. After all the Sonic movie far exceeded my expectations and I enjoyed Detective Pikachu too.
I’m not worried with this movie, less we forget that Shigeru Miyamoto is still manning this project.
@Euler
That's because Mario that dude. He gets top priority over everything else.
@Sandro89
Yeah sure. Watch Mario blow everything out the water come the first trailer.
@DrDaisy
Yeah, and people say the same thing about Daisy, whom I love. Mario's happy-go-lucky nature has been part of his shtick since Super Mario 64 (1996). It's 2020. You should've gotten use to it by now. Shame.
@theJGG
Sounds like a waste of time if you only watch movies to see how dumb they are. Sounds like another critic with nothing better to do, if you ask me.
@Transcendent I ain't a movie critic. I grew up watching these movies. I liked them then and rewatched them to realise that even if there's little effort put in (for an animated movie) children will still go out and see it.
@Transcendent That's one of the things I hate about Super Mario 64. Just because it's a staple doesn't mean I have to like it. His voice is ***** annoying, and having had it for a long time doesn't change that.
@DrDaisy
Well, that's your problem. Not mine. Complaining ain't going to do jack**** long term, "princess". Get over yourself. It's been a staple long before you were born, most likely. So either deal with it or quit the franchise. Everyone gripes and complains in this mediocre community, yet will keep buying the games, regardless. Origami King will be no different: complainers and fan-idiots alike.
@theJGG
I couldn't care less, really. But making a point to watch stuff to see how ridiculous it is sounds like a "tiresome" occupation. I'd rather watch stuff I actually give a rat's a** about than to complain about something I don't really care for. If the Mario movie flops --- which I doubt --- then it flops. If it doesn't, then that goes to show that Nintendo learned from their "past" mistake. Point being, you people are always so damn quick to jump on the bandwagon when you know next to nothing about the movie, regardless of the people working on it. Hyrule Warriors, for example, was a great game, regardless of it not being a mainline Zelda. Yet, people B^^^^^ and moaned about it. There's no satisfying the vocal few, and I couldn't care less.
