UK chart data is now in for the week ending 11th April, revealing that Mario Kart 8 Deluxe has raced past the competition to make a top ten comeback.
The game saw a mighty 317% leap in sales week-on-week as Nintendo managed to temporarily overcome recent Switch stock issues. The restocks also saw a boost for Ring Fit Adventure, with the fitness game re-entering the charts in 25th place with a 192% increase in sales. Sadly, stock has now once again sold out.
Animal Crossing: New Horizons has also benefitted from more Switch consoles hitting the market, with a 14% sales increase helping it to return to the top three. It couldn't compete with this week's biggest release, however, as Final Fantasy VII Remake debuts in first place.
Here's a look at this week's top ten all formats chart:
Last Week | This Week | Title |
---|---|---|
New Entry | 1 | Final Fantasy VII Remake |
1 | 2 | Call of Duty: Modern Warfare |
4 | 3 | Animal Crossing: New Horizons |
3 | 4 | FIFA 20 |
25 | 5 | Mario Kart 8 Deluxe |
5 | 6 | Forza Horizon 4 |
2 | 7 | Resident Evil 3 |
9 | 8 | Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order |
8 | 9 | Grand Theft Auto V |
17 | 10 | The Last of Us: Remastered |

That's amazing. Such an evergreen title
Nintendo would be mad not to be working on a new Mario Kart game for this year's holiday period, it's their best seller by far.
Great idea from Nintendo, get every switch owner hooked on the franchise, then release a new game in the series, genius.
Impressive showing by The Last of Us. The remastered version is 6 years old. Nice to see something other than Gta retain its popularity for such a long time.
@johnvboy
For the same console though? Idk..
It’s been annoying me constantly seeing the ring fit adventure and I haven’t seen it anywhere for sale ! But I just found it! And very quickly ordered it !
Everybody waiting for MK9 is likely to be disappointed- when 8 Deluxe is selling better than ever (Oct-Dec '19 it sold more copies than any previous quarter), why do they even need to?
@hashkey Totally agree. It's not like everyone is waiting for the next chapter in the story lol!
Outside of Ghosts of Tsushima (and maybe Xenoblade DE), all the big games of H1 2020 have been released.
> Animal Crossing New Horizons: ~135,000
> Final Fantasy VII Remake: ~67,000
> Doom Eternal: ~42,000
> Resident Evil 3: ~35,000
Digital sales are completely unaccounted for and have likely grown significantly as the virus and retail shortages linger, but it's clear that Animal Crossing is the fastest-selling game of the year thus far by a big margin.
They should really release more DLC for MK8DX.
People would pay good money for a few new tracks and characters.
@EmirParkreiner I think adding more DLC and releasing a repackaged version with it included probably makes more sense for Nintendo than releasing MK9.
We won't see Mario Kart 9 til Switch 2. Hopefully as a launch title.
And we won't see any new content for MK8D. They would have done it by now if they were going to.
Sad to see Persona 5 Royal not even make the top 40. Such a good game, but seems it's a total flop. So many Switch games in the top 40, it's insane.
I am never surprised at how many copies some Nintedo games sell any more seeing as even on the Wii U Mario Kart 8 still managed to out sell most games of this current or last generation. Certain Nintendo games just never stop selling through the systems lifespan that is why they tend to keep their full price at retail too because they sell regardless.
@Zenszulu That's what's crazy, most these older games are like $15-20. Yet Nintendos are selling still at full price. People love Nintendo that much, it's beautiful. No wonder Nintendo stock is worth so much for just a little gaming company compared to Microsoft and Sony.
Hope they are working on MK8 DLC not MK9. Would love a giant DLC to a game that is still selling like crazy!
@hashkey Agreed and Miyamoto always says there's no point doing a sequel unless you're going to do something radical and different with it and at the moment, MK8 is the pinnacle of the series. It's not like with Zelda where the story/world etc is important. The structure of MK8 is that the only different things would be more racers, tracks and items.
@Samwise7 yep. Not doing sequels for sequels' sake is one of the things that makes Nintendo Nintendo.
Nintendo should really launch some DLCs for mario kart... and make it more competitive. Such a missed opportunitty
@Gasarakii Exactly. Amazing how such a popular game has received no DLC...
There will be no new Mario Kart on Switch. Switch 2 yes, why release another version on the Switch when the current is selling so well... All you would do is split the userbase and the online multiplayer, why do this...
It's best releasing Mario Kart 9 within the first year of the Switch 2, it will serve it's purpose (providing its a great game) to tempt the consumer to upgrade their hardware to the Switch 2.
Also Nintendo hates to leave money on the table, they know plenty of money is still to be made from Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, they will keep the gravy train running as long as possible for the title...
I'd gladly pay for an additional Cup DLC and I think many folks would too. We're ready for some new tracks Nintendo. Mirrored and reversed just ain't cutting it.
Honestly, the engine works so perfectly fine, I wouldn‘t know how they could improve on it. Nothing against Double Dash or the Wii entry but 8 easily trumps every predecessor in the series in terms of mechanical functioning. I would pay full price to just have them add 8 or 10 cups.
@mesome713 exactly even after years of being on sale most games retain their value. Always baffled me when people said that Nintendo should stop developing hardware at one point and go Sega's route, but why would they do that when their games alone sell huge amounts even on Systems like the Wii U that doesn't sell that many units. Proves the point people buy Nintendo consoles mainly for Nintendo games and they don't mind the prices they pay.
@Zenszulu Nintendo is the Disney of gaming. It's a company everyone loves and trust.
@jamesthemagi,
Of course, Mario kart 8 on the Switch was just a filler, and I bet even Nintendo could not have imagined how well this port would sell, they will be well on the way with the next game.
@BANJO,
You are assuming that the Switch 2 is not that far away, I would bet my house on the fact we will get a new Mario kart game this year as it's Mario's 35th anniversary.
I have a 3 Star Gold Cup on every single Cup, including 200cc and Mirror Mode... I would absolutely pay for more MK8, but to be fair I’m still playing and enjoying the game regardless.
@johnvboy Actually I believe Switch 2 is quite a way off.... As for a new Mario Kart game this year, I would be utterly amazed. Just don't see it happening at all....
@johnvboy sometimes I look at Mario Kart 8 and Smash Brothers and say ,"how can Nintendo top this?" Or "how can they come up with fresh ideas?" They always do though. Unreal.
@johnvboy I wonder if Pikmin4 is on the table..
I’m more surprised that Mario Kart 8 had dropped so low last week.
Guessing it’s either discounts on other games or temporary stock shortages?
@mesome713 little?
@johnvboy Release Mario Kart 9 and cannibalize the sales of the system's best seller? Sounds like a killer idea.
I would really love Some new DLC, Levels, Karts, Characters etc.
@spinzaku97,
The game has already sold more than enough, even more considering it's a port, a new Mario kart game would sell tonnes, and there are so many Switch consoles out there the system could easily support both games.
@Joe-b,
It has been talked about for a while, but I would expect a Wii U port of Pikmin 3, before we get a fourth title in the series, it's just not a massive seller, so a port could get the user base up to pave the way for a new game.
@johnvboy yah, prob what will happen.
Wow, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe you go on son.
@johnvboy Most of the Wii U's big games were ported to Switch or got a sequel of some sort. We've heard vague news about Pikmin 4 existing, but 3's a great entry that a lot of people didn't get to play. Heck, 1 and 2 could use ports, maybe something like the original Pikmin's Wii port that took advantage of Wii's motion controls.
@johnvboy Mario Kart 8 Deluxe currently has an almost 50% attach rate for the Switch and I don't think you fully understand what that means. Yes, the game has sold more than enough copies, but Nintendo can still sell more copies of the game by doing absolutely nothing. A Mario Kart 9 on the same system would fragment the install base of Mario Kart into two. Unless it's an absolutely revolutionary sequel, being on the same system as Mario Kart 8 Deluxe would hamper Mario Kart 9's financial potential. It makes zero financial sense to release a new entry on the Switch when Mario Kart 8 Deluxe still remains as the bestselling Switch game of all time.
@hashkey Because, people, including me, are tired of racing on the same tracks, battling on the same courses, and using the same characters over and over again, after nearly six years.
There’s a TON of courses that haven’t been brought back yet, same for characters that haven’t been introduced, and have been neglected after multiple entries.
New items, new single player content, I could go on and on. Tour is doing a lot of things right that should have been done in MK8, but I don’t like the format, nor do I like the crappy gatcha/microtransaction system it has.
@spinzaku97,
Course I understand the game id selling well, but it has got to saturation point with 50% of Switch owners with the game, and of course it will continue to sell well, this is the nature of Nintendo's evergreen titles, that being said I still feel it's time for a new game in the series, and I also feel Nintendo would have released more DLC if it was continuing to go with Mario kart 8, but we will have to wait and see.
@mesome713 Persona 5 Royal was at disadvantage in the west when they chose these days to launch it. A remaster with some extra content, launching again on the same console where it released just a few years ago, competing against Animal Crossing: New Horizons, Final Fantasy VII Remake, DOOM ETERNAL and Resident Evil 3 Remake all at once... It'd have been better if they delayed it at least a month or two.
Call me a mean jerk if you will, but I'm a bit glad that Persona 5 Royal is out already not only of the Top 10, but out of the Top 40, according to UKIE. Gamers still have dignity.
They should have given us original P5 players the option to buy the upgrade separately, like some other games allow us to, instead of expecting us to shell out $60 again for mostly the same game with a few extra bells and whistles.
At the very least they should have allowed us to transfer the Persona Compendium and the social stats, like P3 and P3FES did years ago.
@SmileMan64 Agreed, I don't think many wanted to play the game at all. Most wanted to play Animal Crossing, was stupid of them to release this year.
wow Persona 5 Royal has just vanished off the top 40 and it was number 5 not that long ago, I am not hopeful for that game doing big numbers
Was looking GTA V. Wasn't dissapointed
