UK chart data is now in for the week ending 4th April, revealing that Animal Crossing: New Horizons has slipped down to fourth place.
The game has taken a slight tumble from last week's third position, making way for PS4's shiny new entry, Resident Evil 3. It's actually the only Nintendo game to make it into the top ten this week, although Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy did sell best on Switch.
Here's a look at this week's top ten all formats chart:
Last Week | This Week | |
---|---|---|
1 | 1 | Call of Duty: Modern Warfare |

Ouch, Resident Evil couldn't top Call of Duty? Looks like Persona did poorly. It couldn't beat Animal Crossing which is old now. I'm guessing it sold 100k
Can't believe call of duty is beating persona 5. Some people really have no taste in what is a good game anymore. Imagine thinking that garbage like FIFA would be a better purchase then one of the greatest games of our generation
As much as EA abuses their consumers, they just keep selling games. Their shareholders must be happy!
@AxeltheBuizel Honestly, I haven't played Persona 5, but I'm really drawn away by the horrid graphic design. The reds, blacks and whites don't go well together, especially with those horrible moving stars and disjointed text.
@Noid wth, Persona 5 (Royal) has one of the best graphic designs i've ever seen in a game, if not THE best
Persona 5 is a re-release however, and I feel likes it's a slightly more niche franchise, so I can see why it wouldn't have crazy sales. But, the fact remains that Call of Duty is practically always a re-release of the previous game, so it should never be on top in my opinion.
No surprise seeing Switch games drop, people just can't buy the consoles to play them and there's been issues even before the current situation
I'm surprised that Doom Eternal isn't on this list. Phenomenal game imo
@AxeltheBuizel You realize people have different opinions on what kind of games they like to play. Persona is a rather niche series, and most may not enjoy it.
Call of Duty? Really? There isn't enough space in my eye sockets for an eye roll this big.
People that wouldn’t usually buy consoles are wanting a switch but you can’t buy them! So they are buying what they can. Also as many have said, some gamers just have bad taste
Due to Switch hardware shortages, Mario Kart 8 DX fell out of the Top 20 best-sellers for the first time in 3 years.
@Noid everyone has personal tastes but like others have said Persona 5 is famed for its UI.
Also if the colour scheme isn’t your thing avoid The White Stripes albums too!
@Yattaze I don't like it either. It looks like a serial killer created it. It's unique, but that's about it.
@AxeltheBuizel JRPGs aren't interesting to most western folks. To me they are totally uninteresting. Not that I am going to play FIFA or COD, but I much rather play DOOM or even Yoshi's crafted world than a JRPG
@StevenG Um, hold that thought. Let’s see how the Final Fantasy VII Remake sells before saying the western market isn’t into JRPGs.
@Krull the I was thinking the same thing.
No surprise few Nintendo games at top ten. Difficult to hold the interest with few releases AND news of upcoming big releases
@mesome713 I was thinking of getting Resident Evil 3 myself, but everyone I've talked to has told me they finished it in only around 5 hours. They've also said there's a lot of content cut from the original release. They don't hate it, in fact they would still recommend it, but even they say it feels more like really good, if overpriced, DLC rather than a whole new game. So for me, I'll personally wait until it goes on sale. I just bring it up because I can't help but feel that may have affected sales.
@westman98 wow! Always enjoy your extra information, thank you.
@Quantaur I want to get it too. I like Resident Evil a bunch, I've played almost all of them. But yeah, I'll get it on sale too, Capcom games always go on sale.
@Skalgrim
Or the actual reality that the Switch console and majority of big selling games are completely sold out.
Good to see RE up high, was worried the negative reviews would have hit sales. Personally I'm really enjoying it (but 2 was better ).
Not suprised Persona 5 Royal isn't higher, I love the series but I wouldn't be rushing to play Royal if I had a PS4. It's a big commitment in the first place and while it's absolutely amazing...I'm not sure if I want to relive it for the amount of content they have added. A Royal DLC pack like FFXV would have been nice but it would never have worked in this case.
I’m not usually one to hate on a popular game just because it’s popular, but I am really sick of seeing CoD as the top game every year. Even on it’s bad years, which for me has been since MW2. 🤷♂️
@Kimyonaakuma RE3's launch sales were half of RE2's launch sales. Reviews definitely hurt the game.
@Skalgrim
It’s sold out everywhere. They’ve just released a huge AAA game that’s helping it sell out.
@Skalgrim everything's sold out more like, I've been trying to get Animal Crossing but it's sold out everywhere unless I wanna pay scalper prices!
@Otoemetry Eshop is never sold out.
I'm surprised people are still surprised that Call of Duty tops charts. It's one of the pinnacles of the casual multiplayer market, maybe not in quality, but in brand recognition. It also helps that it's in a genre that has far more appeal than Persona or Resi and clearly the games are fun enough to keep people coming back. This is coming from someone who hasn't touched Call of Duty since MW3 (that said I would be lying if I said I didn't want to get MW2 remastered since that was my favorite COD).
TLDR: It's sad, but the brand name is a more powerful tool than the quality of the product. MW2 was heck of alot fun.
@AxeltheBuizel P5R is my current single player game, and MW has been my multiplayer game for 6 months. You can like and enjoy both.
@Noid worked for Hitler
@MasterJay MW 2019 changed quite a bit.
@AnnoyingFrenzy I never played MW2 back in the day, but the remake is great. I thought I didnt like fps campaigns anymore but that changed that.
@Trajan Oh yeah, I was one of the weirdos that played Call of Duty for the campaigns. MW2's campaign, in particular, was great and it was also the only COD game I played the multiplayer on.
Also, not related, but is your PFP Persona 3?
@AnnoyingFrenzy Yes it is!
@Trajan Ah cool! Never got to play that one.
@HXLXIII run out of space on my SD card and I can't really afford both 😭
@carlos82 No surprise seeing Switch games drop, people just can't buy the consoles to play them and there's been issues even before the current situation
This is the most likely reason as to why. If the inventory wasn't so depleted the stats would be different so this rating should be taking with a grain of CV19 as the cause.
Glad to see RE3 up there. I want Capcom to keep up with their REmakes. Code Veronica deserves one.
No Doom Eternal? Wow...
@EVIL-C heard the Switch was delayed with a TBA date.
Yeah, I can tell I would have been the unpopular kid in the UK growing up. You guys have a different taste in games.
To quote Robert Carlyle: “Hunger is a great heel spur for motivation to work”. I love my switch, but it seems to motivate Nintendo to give us a pro Switch (even if 1080p HDR), it needs to see some loss to competitors, be it hardware or software side. We all know how the hardware is selling....
@SwitchForce Yeah, on Switch. It came out the same day as AC on the other platforms.
It's pretty cool to see new releases make it to a top ten like RE3 and P5R, just shows how much support the games are getting, and they definitely deserve it
@Noid I love the art direction, but I had a much easier time reading information in Persona 4 Golden, because the text was more plain. P5 is so flashy, and it's really distracting. I spent 5 minutes trying to find out the level of my Personas, despite that information being on screen.
Being a fan of Nintendo in the UK must be really demoralizing and depressing. It's like, no matter how great the console is, everything Nintendo related sells like either the Wii U or Virtual Boy. You Brits gotta get your act together!
Nintendo Switches are sold out everywhere in the UK from what I've heard, that very likely causes game sales to drop.
R3make's physical sales must have been affected by the C19. Perhaps it sold more digitally than REmake 2. I myself would like it physical, but the stores where I buy it are closed because of the virus.
Persona 5 Royal, just at #5... Have to admit I think it deserves even less than that. The Royal content should also have been optionally a DLC upgrade for those of us who already own the original PS4 game, not basically $60 DLC.
I'm still enjoying my Animal Crossing game. Don't care about the charts, plus didn't ask.
@AxeltheBuizel That's the good old Nintendo fanboy blinkers on.
Nothing wrong with Call of Duty or FIFA. They are excellent games regardless of the opinion you and all Nintendo fanboys have have. Persona 5 is niche regardless.
@SwitchForce Nintendo and their good old restrict supply to increase demand tactic is still in full force I see.
@AnnoyingFrenzy A popular series such as Call of Duty series is marked ferociously harder than the likes of Persona 5 because of expectation and the fans all have different demands.
@Heavyarms55 don't judge us all like that, many of us are not part of the COD and FIFA crowd
@Krull FF VII is a special case.
Mind you I won't be buying it. If I want to play it I will just play it on my PS3. All PS3s play PS games.
It didn't need a remake and will probably be ruined in the process.
@liveswired Dude FIFA is a scam. It's just the same game again.
Call of Honor:Medal of Duty are also garbage games. They are shooters for kids who are bad at shooters. They are drunken frat boy games.
Outside of Ghosts of Tsushima (and maybe Xenoblade DE), all the big games of H1 2020 have been released. Here are the retail launch sales of the big 2020 releases thus far:
> Animal Crossing New Horizons: ~135,000
> Final Fantasy VII Remake: ~67,000
> Doom Eternal: ~42,000
> Resident Evil 3: ~35,000
Digital sales are completely unaccounted for and have likely grown significabtly as the virus and game shortages linger, but it's clear that Animal Crossing is by far the fastest-selling game of the year thus far.
