The latest update for Animal Crossing: New Horizons has reduced the interest on all savings accounts, nerfed bug spawn rates, and now the Redd's statues appear to be causing a stir on social media.
Famous statues like Michaelangelo's 'David' and the Greek sculpture 'The Discobolus of Myron' obviously feature, but their um...bits, are now more visible than ever thanks to next-generation Nintendo hardware. This has quickly become a major talking point on social media ā with some players seemingly missing the point these are accurate portrayals of well-known artworks from the Classic and Renaissance periods.

As you can see, it's ignited quite a bit of discussion. Some are standing by the statues as art, while others are voicing concerns about them being on display to younger players and bypassing censorship.
As far as we're concerned, these statues are works of art and we're sure anyone who is at least familiar with Classic and Renaissance art will agree. In saying this, tell us which side of the fence you are on in the comments down below.

I am surrounded by nude statues in Athens. No shock for me.
It's just art and anatomy... Children should also know the parts of the human body in a non-sexual way. Our genitalia does not have to be sexualized all the time... Good for Animal Crossing sticking with art the right way; the uncensored way.
Here we go again.
Wah wah explicit human genital....
Wah wah pornography....
Wah wah Nintendo screwed up....
Btw, that statue also share same name with me, David.
Edit: Don't forget about Venus painting.
She was naked after all.
Not so much as as fig leaf, eh Big N? Thumbs up for dedication to the classics!
If people are getting upset at something as small as this then how are they even living on this planet?
Anyone that gets triggered by this needs to seriously get a life.
Overzealous censorship really annoys me.
So, anyway, why will Nintendolife undoubtedly censor my comment if it contains the words "dick" or "cock" but will also straight-up just post examples of tweets that have these words in them?
@mist I'm not saying I'm offended by this, but if you act like this being in the game is some big deal, you also need to get a life.
Trust me, it's not the quote-unquote "triggered SJW feminists" who are getting mad over this, it's... literally nobody.
is serious that people is upset that Nintendo didnt decided to censor Statues that show his Genitalia, the political correctness is ruining everything it touch, glad that Nintendo didnt decided to listen to that persons, and show how this Statue is suposed to be.
We've already seen Mario's nips.. this is nothing, in comparison.
DāYOU KNOW WHAT WE ARE? WEāRE THE STATUE DESTROYERS YES WE ARE
At least put a " new leaf " over his privates.
This was actually a glorious opportunity for them to be goofy and stick the animal crossing Leaf all over the place.
Its obvious that no one is calling for these images to be "censored". The tweets are so jokey about it. Its clearly goofing on them. Ppl in these comment really want to pretend their games are gonna get oppressed or something
Sadly there are not enough penises of colour in this game. And not enough gay ones either!
Thanks Nintendo!! š”
Does everyone time travel ? My museum isn't available today because it's been upgraded. that's what bothering me, I never time travel in any animal crossing and I don't understand the appeal. It's a game about taking your time. And because of time travel now the nook bank's interest rate is really bad and cloud saves isn't allowed. What would nintendo do next because of time Travel ? New leaf on art that's what !
HELL YEAH BOYS WE'RE ONE STEP CLOSER TO BANGING OUR VILLAGERS (don't worry guys this is a joke)
Wasn't there a Simpson episode over the statue of David's junk?
@ChompyMage Is this size shaming?
Makes me think of the one of the opening jokes in the Simpsons movie where Bart is streaking on his skateboard and passes Ralph and Ralph says "I like boys now" lol.
Even BioWare censored David when it appeared in the Kasumi DLC. They broke his D off.
Glad to see the fandom keeps its priorities straight.
I'm actually curious if this is going to cause an issue with ratings boards or not.
They're works of art and representing them accurately I feel is fine, but this is post-launch content that probably did not go through a classification process, and has a lot more visual detail than the 3DS titles ever did.
I mean, they censored the Tanuki statue by removing the detail or color from the carving area between its legs.
Glad to see the fandom repeating the same reaction every time they see these.
Penises!!! Oh the horror š±š±
Seriously. If you're really concerned about real life art pieces in a video game corrupting your kids due to nudity, then you better keep that same energy when it comes to the real thing
Personally, I'm okay with it, but I want to be kept updated on this. I want to see if "high art" excuses the fact that there is a penis in an E-rated game or if the ESRB puts enough pressure on Nintendo to mask it in some way. And if that happens, I ask what the heck is the ESRB doing censoring high art when the gambling machine that is NBA 2k20 not Rated M?
@Giancarlothomaz Hahaha, you got your offended group wrong. This has nothing to do with political correctness, so called āSJWsā are for the most part sex positive feminists and fans of Animal Crossing. Nobodyās even offended here, theyāre just making jokes.
Oh no! A portrayal of human genitals! THE GRAVEST OF CRIMES! We must burn every known copy of Animal Crossing every produced and delete the source code! Nintendo should be shut down and every single worker arrested for this perversion!
Now let's go enjoy the torture mini-game in GTA 5 or the airport terrorist attack in Call of Duty. Because remember folks, violence is normal and fine, but anything even vaguely, remotely, related to that horrible 3 letter word, is the source of all evil in the world.
This comment sponsored by the association of hypocrites and moral cripples.
It's art and it's natural. Anyone offended by David likely is jealous that he has a bigger package than they do. Glad Nintendo is letting art and culture win instead of modern abstract values.
are you all like 12 years old
If it's anything like New Leaf, censorship is literally how you know it's a FAKE. I love that little detail.
These Tweets show just how uncultured the modern world has become. Generation X and proud.
Thanks internet, censorship patch incoming...
This debate reminds me of the Simpsons episode "Itchy and Scratchy and Marge", where Marge defends the statue as a work of art while members of the organization she founded have objected to it.
"I told you she was soft on full-frontal nudity!"
House MD said right, people are idiots.
@Heavyarms55
ā anything even vaguely, remotely, related to that horrible 3 letter wordā
Fun? š
I foresee many people taking passport pictures in the art gallery in the future...
@ChompyMage "small" in more ways than one
I can only conclude those who are outraged by this, are ignorant or uneducated. Instead of throwing a hissy fit about kids seeing nudity, they should take the opportunity, to educate themselves and their kids, not only about the art they are seeing in the game, but also that there is nothing inherently sexual about nudity.
They allow this but not cloud saves?
No one is offended by this. You guys are clowns.
Uncultered Swines
I'm all about keeping pornography away from kids. Porn is not a good teacher for sexuality. But there is a difference between nude artistic depictions and pornography. This is classical nude art, with no sexual overtones, and is perfectly fine.
Tbh I kind of wish they would have censored them because I simply don't like having dicks in my game even if it's 'art', but these kinds of reactions make it worth while lmao
@Bolt90
Games are art too. Itās when they cut content , for example Tokyo Mirage Sessions, a game thatās intended audience is teens and older I have a problem with.
Is anyone making a bigger deal about this than the sites reporting on it?
NintendoLife: "Do not use profanity; Use of unsavoury language including profanity and swearing is not acceptable, please remember that this website has users of all ages." (Community Rules, Rule No. God Damn 1)
Also NintendoLife: Here are some tweets that use profanity
EDIT: Lol, they removed the tweets with profanity. Please take your own community rules to heart when making articles in the future. Lead by example.
Yes, we live in THIS timeline.
@Cotillion no because it shouldn't have to be a big deal
Censor the the word in the body of the sorry but not the tweets. That seems a bit like double standards to me ...
Those upset by artistic nudity especially classical and renaissance era artistic nudity that celebrates the human form saying itās detrimental to kids are projecting their own insecurities onto kids to justify their desired censorship.
Agreed. Donāt censor Michaelangelo.
For Pizzaās sake. And Pisaās too.
Should certainly be entertaining seeing some of the more conservative Americans react to this.
This is all so transphobic! Classic statues are all so hetero-normative! Waaaah.
If they ever choose to censor those statues, then I also want a censor bar over Mona Lisaās eyes!
resetera triggered what else is new
When you go to the museum it's not censored. This is art as in educational materials. Only prudes would find this offensive
F*** sake....itās art! The game is art and the art inside is art!
Who would have guessed that snowflakes played animal crossing?
Does anyone else see that the villager in the main shot looks like an Audino?
Cool move by Nintendo. Don't censor historical art.
I did find it odd that nudity was never flagged in spite of the game's ESRB E rating (but they'll flag snot and farts). ESRB has dished out M ratings for less than this, and they rarely pay any credence to context.
Interestingly though, it wouldn't have surprised me if the Australian Classification Board would have flagged "Very mild nudity" on the packaging had this content been in the base build.
Nintendo has always been big about not censoring anyone else's art. They will censor theors but not someone else's. They would rather not include something entirely than to censor it. So good for nintendo for maintaining the integrity of the artwork of others. I just hope they dont feel pressure to remove the statues entirely.
ACNH exposing the immature children of the internet.
Oh no, how horrible!!!!!
š
@RupeeClock Censoring on art -and especially old statues etc.- is forbidden (at least where I live, Athens, Greece)
3.6bln V / 3.6Bbln P
I dont know why this is such a big deal. There are literally Billions of (human) dongs and (Oprahs term, not mine) Vjayjays out there. Who gives a toss.
Are there female naked statues in the game as well?
It's not a big deal unless you make it a big deal. Go to a live drawing class, go to art museums all around the world. Why does nudity have to be hyper-sexualized all the damn time.
@DrDaisy
Gotcha. š
Also on ACNL.
@Juga
If i remembered from ACNL, the fake of David's statue has something else on his shoulder.
Did that parent really just say "i don't want my kid knowing that penises exist" wtf kind of parent teaching is that?! That is doing way more harm to the kid than good, she/he should be teaching their child about it properly instead of letting them learn about it improperly from some other random source or person. Gosh dang some people are so STUPID!! (facepalms)
The same people upset by this are probably totally okay with their elementary aged kids being taught how to have proper anal and oral sex.
@DinnerAndWine
If by Michelangelo there most likely are gay penises represented.
@Andy_Witmyer
Your statement makes no sense. If people are upset about statues' gentalia the only sex they'll want taught is immaculate conception.
My pantsless villagers should be anatomically correct, then.
Those are some sharp polygons on the first statues shoulders
If people canāt get over nudity in classical art, then they just shouldnāt have this game.
@frogopus generally the SJWs have been more Puritanical than all the prude mothers combined.
@Chibi_Manny thatās clearly sarcasm
The 13 year old in me just loves this. I hope Nintendo doesn't remove this..... lol
So Nintendo has to apologize if they include art as it was sculptured irl, but Rockstar is given a free pass for making a game where you shag a prostitute to gain health or PS can make a game of a guy who hates all Gods so there is cut scenes with useless graphic ripping of heads off to get the message that your opponent is dead in case you were unsure...
āHey kids, violence is okay as long as you donāt show a nippleā
Give me a break.
People are so sensitive these days it drives me nuts!
@mantez @muscpt What these guys said ^šŖ
I actually laughed at this...I was born and raised in Rome, where we start going on museum field trips with our schools when we are 6 - and where, of course, the art is shown in all its uncensored glory. I have also never seen any censure of the statuesā bits in art history textbooks - even the illustrated, kiddy ones we had in primary school in the early 2000s. And just to clarify, I went to a religious school run by Roman catholic nuns until I was 10; if the nuns werenāt bothered to hide the use of nudity in art from a bunch of 7-year-olds, I donāt see why accurate reproductions in AC should be a cause for worry. š
Only ignorant, bigot and dull americans could raise such a question, as usual. But, please, go on on buyin weapons as bread, as usual.
Art is like music and other Forms of media, the best ones can make you feel different feelings and emotions, with that in mind, if a statue of a nude person offends you then that proves itās good art.
Stop being prudes. Nudity is the most natural thing in the world.
@DinnerAndWine lol bro are you actually being dead serious rn
@RileyR what the heck how. Mind explaining this?
@J-Plap
www.resetera.com
www.twitter.com
www.theguardian.co.uk
and so on.
Why is it a big deal? Anyone can see the exact same statue in almost any art museum they went to for a school field trip, I bet people didnt complain about censory there. Calm down Karen.
@nessisonett i dont belong in this Group, i was just pointing up, this Group i mentioned, will problaby feel ofended by the art description in Animal Crossing New Horizon, i hate Political Corretcness.
@Giancarlothomaz Political correctness has absolutely nothing to do with censoring a penis on a statue thatās hundreds of years old. Itās just the human body, the only people that would be offended by this are pearl-clutching moralists, the majority of which are conservative old people.
@DinnerAndWine The statueās like grey. Thatās a penis of colour right there. Plus Michelangelo took more dong than Barry Manilow so heād mostly likely modelled the penis on somebody that was more than just a business associate.
Now we need an accurate portrayal of Nookās Nuts
@Chibi_Manny That same guy later clarified that he was joking. As are pretty much all of the people making these tweets. It's art. No one is actually offended by this.
@ReaperExTenebris I can't speak to female statues, but there are paintings in the game with breasts on display. Art is art and many of the greatest works of art display nudity. If you can view it in a museum there's no reason not to be able to view it literally anywhere else.
@ferroreo exactly, I knew boys and girls had different genitalia when I was super young but I didnāt link it to any sexual reasoning or functionality. I suppose it can definitely be a bit off-putting seeing it at first from a parental perspective but in the end I really donāt see any issue at all unless you make it one.
One of Animal Crossing's features of these classic real-life sculptures and paintings, is to tell the fake from the original art.
If they had cut off the genital, it would be a fake, and you could never obtain the original and the in-game museum could never be completed.
So please start to make some sense, put the pron to the side for a while, and read some books about historical art.
