In a new video from Vanity Fair, voice actress Sarah Natochenny talks us through the process of dubbing the Pokémon anime.
If you're a fan of the show, or even if you're just mildly interested in anime or film at all, the video's a pretty fascinating watch. Natochenny provides the voice for lead character Ash Ketchum in the English-language adaptation of the show, and has done since way back in 2006. Above, we get to see her working on a scene from the Pokémon Sun and Moon anime arc while learning about how everything's put together.
As well as the acting itself, the video touches upon how the show and its dialogue are reinterpreted for western culture, the fine-tuning and digital editing that takes place in the studio, and on-the-fly script alteration.
If you're left wanting to watch some of the anime yourself, you can find some episodes available for free on Pokémon's official site, and you'll also find a few of the latest films available to watch on Netflix.
Interesting stuff!

I've always found voice acting in general pretty neat, I like seeing the behind the scenes stuff.
Really terrific, insightful video. Honestly, I clicked cause she looked cute in the thumbnail. I didn't expect her to get into the real nitty- gritty of her job. It was really fascinating. Watching her do Ash's defeated exhale after he takes ember(?) to the face was hilarious!
Props to the voice director and engineer. Their crew seems to be on it!
I need to start voice acting, I am pretty dang good at it lol.
I would however not like dubbing, seems like less creative freedom.
Ash Ketchum is hot!
No, I mean the actress...
I didn't even realize Jennifer Tyler was replaced.
I keep thinking that voice acting is like, the best job ever.
Wow, dubbing is a magical art. She's amazingly awesome. I'm gonna start watching only dubbs, that shat is super hard to do. Sarah Natochenny is my new hero, she's the best.
@DrDaisy do you mean veronica taylor?
@darkswabber Yes. 😳 (I couldn't find the blush emoji)

@DrDaisy Sarah Natochenny has actually voiced Ash Ketchum for longer than Veronica Taylor has. Veronica voiced Ash from season 1 to 8, while Sarah has voiced Ash starting with season 9, the Battle Frontier arc. I personally still prefer Veronica regardless.
If you liked this and haven't watched it, I'd recommend the documentary, "I Know That Voice". I believe it's on Amazon Prime. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=azR8i4KTeEE
Damn she’s fine
Fun fact: She also voices Manuela in FE Three Houses
All this time and I never realised how hot Ash Ketchum was, wow.
Cool insight to how the dubbing process works. Love these peeks into the industry.
How about we let the Pokémon anime die already?
Am I the only one that's astounded that Ash is voiced by a woman? It makes so much sense now that I see this video, but damn
