As part of today's Nintendo Indie World Showcase, it was revealed that Switch is getting a Super Smash Bros.-style brawler that's all about indies this summer.
Bounty Battle, a game from publisher Merge Games and French developer Dark Screen Games, is a 1-4 player beat 'em up starring characters from all over the indie scene. Just like Smash, you'll be pitting your chosen characters up against one another in 2D arenas and there are 25 different fighters from 20 different games to choose from:
- Guacamelee!
- Darkest Dungeon
- Dead Cells
- Awesomenauts
- Nuclear Throne
- Owlboy
- Axiom Verge
- SteamWorld Dig
- Oddmar
- Jotun
- Battle Chasers Nightwar
- Death’s Gambit
- EITR
- Super Comboman
- Pankapu
- Flinthook
- Doko Roko
- Tower of Samsara
- Blubber Busters
- Ruin of the Reckless
- The Bug Butcher
- Blocks that Matter
Each fighter comes with their own Minion companion and unique abilities, and you'll also be able to battle across levels inspired by the fighters’ native game worlds. Here's a list of key features:
- A host of game modes including a Story Mode, Couch Multiplayer, Practise and Tutorial to discover your style
- Over 20 characters from your favourite Indie titles each with their own move set and special attacks
- Each fighter has their very own minion to summon and join the fight
- Over 10 arenas to battle on–some plucked from the worlds of their fighters
- Multiple colour and palette swap options to fight in style!
Being a Merge Games title, Bounty Battle will also be receiving its very own Signature Edition release which will include a physical copy of the game, four limited-edition pins, a collector's certificate, a 34-page booklet, and a fancy box and sleeve to keep it all in. Standard physical versions will also be available.
The game will launch on Switch and other platforms this summer. Are you interested in this one? Share your thoughts with us in the comments below.

While I like a few of those games, I'm not particularly attached to any of the characters from any of them so this doesn't do it for me.
I respect that we live in a time where essentially many different companies/creators can come together to make a game like this. The logistics of it must be insane. This may end up being somebody's Smash in 20 years.
No Shantae news this close to Spring? And she's not in this game?
AWW YEAH #shantaeforsmash
I dunno man, the footage just didn't look that good...I'm not a stickler for fps, but in a fighting game, it just doesn't feel good to have it look like it does in the trailer
EDIT: also the art style is kind of a turn off--mainly the lighting
@KingBowser86 I would not recommend counting your Cucco's just yet.
@KingBowser86 I thought the same thing, looking for Shantae, or WayForward titles in the list of games represented. It's still possible Shantae won't be a character in Ultimate, although Shantae, & Risky are spirits in-game. The appearance of any WayForward ip in this title may still happen, & just be as-yet unannounced as of this article. Licensing also plays into things.
I appreciate the effort this team probably went through to pull this project off the ground, but... it doesn't look pretty. Why are all the colours horribly muted? The animation lacks the oomph as well from what we see in the trailer. I'm not too keen from what I see.
I always see these Smash-like games and they just always look....so boring compared to Smash itself.
@MegaVel91 Oh, of course, it could very well be just delayed. It'd definitely be prudent not to be hyped given that Shantae went multi-plat.
But I've already driven myself Cucco-crazy with how many things point to it and how well she'd play and work with the rest of the roster. Might as well hype myself up more since I've already gone over that line, lol
The game looks neat but man, those frame drops in the trailer were rough.
But it's releasing in the summer so they'll most likely get it ironed out by release.
Good for them I guess, but I'm not really sure what kind of pull it'll have.
Even the biggest names here probably amount to cult followings at best in the grand scheme of things, and it's unlikely most people will have any attatchment to maybe more than two or three characters.
So that's what it is. I wasn't sure during the presentation.
It would be extremely ironic if Shovel Knight wasn't in it.
The best Smash-like indie game I've seen is Slap City.
I've tried others such as Brawlout, but nothing came as close to being just plain FUN as Slap City did. I hope it comes to Switch at some point.
Looks pretty cool, hope they don't screw it up like that horrible Smash wannabe game Sony embrassingly attempted.
Sweet, has Steamworld and Guacamelee characters, I'm sold on that alone.
This looks really cool... it it also looked very dark. Hopefully there are some brighter arenas. But colour me interested...
Was this the indie smash-like that was on indiegogo or something a long time ago?
No online mutliplayer means this game is automatically a complete and total joke and will fail out the gate. And the animation looks terrible, what is it 10fps? Pass.
Wait—no Shovel Knight?! He’s in everything, this HAS to include him!
Also I hope that’s not what the frame rate is like on final release....
@KingBowser86 my guy. Nothing points to it. You also have to remember that Nintendo chose the extra fighter roster. So her chances are as good as anyone elses.
this is horrid
@Brady1138 My thoughts exactly.
@MegaVel91 Nothing? Two sudden pieces of merch (and the Funko Pop was hurriedly labeled "HGH" and not "SatSS" or even just "Shantae"), being last on the Spirits list even after Assist Trophies yet not with other franchises that don't even have AT's (yet still special enough to have gotten character-fitting specific placements in WoL), and James/Matt visiting Japan for yet-unrevealed reasons are certainly more than a lot of other franchises have. And that's before getting into the "stretching" evidence.
I do share the fear that if Nintendo picked the fighters, then Shantae probably isn't on their list. Now, if they did have to choose an indie that Nintendo helped make and WF was arguably crucial to their eShops...
We'll just have to wait and see.
@KingBowser86 A Funko Pop doesn't mean jack for Smash and I dunno what other two pieces of merch you're referring to. Being last on on the Spirits list also doesn't mean anything, it could be just how they decided to organize her in the list. All of those are coincidental things you're attributing to something you want (and believe me when I say I would be over the moon if Shantae is included as a playable fighter). That's worse than grasping at straws, that's trying to pull evidence out of thin air. By that same logic, any character that recently got a Nendoroid or their own Funko or other pieces of merch could be in Smash.
The only thing you have is James/Matt going to Japan and even that could be just to discuss business for distribution of SatSS further in person. So again, that's not definitive evidence, that's just making an assumption based on a desire.
Look if Shantae gets announced I will be more than happy, but don't go attributing any random thing as indicator of her being in Smash. It's okay to be hopeful and hype, but not if you're going to use any little thing to drum up your hopes.
@MegaVel91 Whoa whoa whoa whoa. You're going to say that after the Banjo-Kazooie Totaku and other merch had their new Smash design before they were revealed? We've seen Shantae's Funko Pop Design but nothing on her confirmed Totaku figure.
I was alright with you questioning the evidence, but acting like you know everything about something of which you've illustrated a clear ignorance? You should know better.
@KingBowser86 I'm sorry, since when is pointing out holes in logic acting like a know-it-all? Whether you like it or not, none of what you've listed is definitive of anything concrete.
As for the Banjo Kazooie Totaku and other merch. Just because it happened once isn't a guarantee of the same.
This is why I never engage in this kind of speculation. Too much of it is making dots to connect where none exist more often than not.
So what is your basis on all of that being evidence that Shantae is a shoe-in for announcement then?
No Nameless Knight (from Hollow Knight)? Hmmmm...
@TromboneGamer I think that was Indipogo - similar concept of an indie brawler, but you are always jumping and are trying to bounce on your opponents' heads or something.
Cool, but it needs some "Shovel Knight" and "Freedom Planet" love,
@Capt_N WayForward may not count as an indie company, seeing as they were already a respected retail developer before they started releasing some smaller e-Shop exclusive games. Still, if they want to join the party, particularly Shantae, I'm all for it.
They want to be the Smash Bros for indies? They've got some BIG shoes to fill.
@mesome713 “Sony bad.”
Not a fan of the animation/art style. This 2D models with posable joints thing always looks like something that could be made on powerpoint 20 years ago. And not in a (retro) good way.
Looks trashy, something I would have absolutely no interest in if not for q few characters.
I'll give it this, compared to most indie crossover games it has more characters that I know and/or from games I've played (compared to the usual like 1), but the game itself looks like something I'll stop playing 5 minutes after I've bought it and never pick it up again.
Where is Shovel Knight?
Where is Eliot?!!? Jk; I finished Eliot Quest, but after a crux glitch upon defeating the 4th guardian, I decided: man, I pretty much hate this game!
