Animal Crossing: New Horizons isn't even out yet, but its first major update is already locked in and ready to go.
The game will be updated to Version 1.1.0 at 2am CET this Thursday, 19th March. If you're planning on buying the game on launch day (Friday 20th) or after, you'll be able to update your game as normal when you load it up for the first time, but those who have already preloaded the game digitally will find that it should start downloading automatically ahead of launch.
So what does it actually do? Well, last month's Animal Crossing Nintendo Direct was the first time we were told about the free updates planned for the game, and the first - initially planned for launch day - was said to introduce a Bunny Day event and special items for both New Horizons and Pocket Camp.
The first free update will be on launch day, March 20. By installing this update, you can celebrate Bunny Day with a special event in April. If you own both Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp for mobile devices and Animal Crossing: New Horizons, you’ll receive special items in each game.
A day-zero patch, then? Efficient.

I'm wary about Pocket Camp cross-game material, because I refuse to play that game.
So I can update my preloaded game on Thursday at 9:00 PM I guess?

This might be great and all, but it has me worried about playing this game in the future. Part of the fun of the game is loading it up at certain times to partake in the special events going on. If these events are now locked behind DLC, that ruins that completely. What happens when the service inevitably goes down? How many events are currently planned before the devs decide that's enough support? Splatoon didn't get splatfests forever.
@Cherkov I'm confused on what you mean, was new leaf different?
@RupeeClock There is nothing that goes from Pocket Camp to New Horizons. In fact, it is the opposite. You can send things to Pocket Camp from New Horizons.
@Steven_the_2nd
If that's true, that's relieving. Hopefully it stays that way.
How do we get the pocket camp items?
Why are special events being released as free patches instead of hard coded in the game?
yeah they said launch day. but did you consider australian time???
@Mountain_Man because why release it even later just to add more events rather than do it over time in updates?
Try "Day -3 patch". lol
@ShadJV Since the events are based on real-world holidays (i.e. "Bunny Day" is synonymous with Easter), I don't see why they couldn't have been added during development like past Animal Crossing games.
My question is, will we need patches every single time a holiday rolls around? Or is it a once-and-done for each holiday, and then they happen on subsequent years without needing a patch?
@Mountain_Man Nintendo has already confirmed there are plenty of holidays and events already in the game, these are additional holidays they’re adding in over time. Once something is added to the game (such as a new holiday or event), it’s there for good, you won’t need to download Bunny Day again. These are likely additional events they didn’t have time to add during development, they already delayed the game once.
Where are my Gyroids, Nintendo?! >.<
Question:
Does "If you own both Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp for mobile devices and Animal Crossing: New Horizons, you’ll receive special items in each game" mean that you have to have both (!) games connected to your account to get the special items for AC on the Switch?
As much as I or others may miss the days of opening a game that is 100% finished out of the box, I think we just have to accept that that era is over at this point.
