Remember Audrey, the Animal Crossing-loving grandmother who clocked up almost 4,000 hours of playtime on Animal Crossing: New Leaf? Well, it would appear that she has been immortalised in Animal Crossing: New Horizons by getting a character named after her.
Audrey rose to fame last year when her grandson, Paul Hubans, posted a video of her showing off her progress in the 3DS game. She has been playing it every single day for the past four years. The Animal Crossing community quickly took her to their hearts and even raised the funds to purchase her an Animal Crossing edition Nintendo Switch.
With reviews for New Horizons now live, fans have been picking through the video footage and have discovered that there's a character in the game named Audie, which is the same name that Audrey uses in New Leaf.
What do you make of this neat little tribute to one of the series' most famous fans?

Love this. I wonder if she’ll play the new one?
MVP! Would love to have her in my village.
Could it be random coincidence? Not an unpopular name by any means.
If it is true then that is good on Nintendo to do.
Very nice gesture by Nintendo, hope she enjoys the new game!
Now that’s the kind of news we need right now!
That's why Nintendo is the greatest, even games an 87 year old drops 4k hours into.
Coincidence
If that is true and not coincidence, it is super cool!
i'm not sure i believe it's anything more than coincidence, but it'd be cool if it wasn't
Aren't we jumping the gun on this one? Audie? Audrey?, I get the parallell lines drawn here, but this could just be a coincidence.
Also, Nintendo didn't even want to reference Robin Williams in Zelda. So doubt this was on purpose.
@TAndvig
Audrey is the lady's name, while Audie is her in-game name, which is the same. Don't know if it's a coincidence, but the name is the same.
No more spoilers.... Ok, I like this one!
She ll win a switch lite and animal crossing at launch. They will record her reaction.
I love this so much.
That is awesome!
I'm calling coincidence. There's been other petitions to get Nintendo to memorialize other people and they never went through.
@TAndvig if you read the article, her in game username was already Audie. I agree it might be coincidence, but it’s not really Audrey vs Audie, it’s Audie vs Audie.
That’s awesome! I’ve been thinking of getting my mom to try new leaf.
Props to you Nintendo, you've made someone's day a lot better.
I'm hoping to get my mom into AC this weekend when I go home to visit. Would love to play with her online.
EDIT: Ma vetoed the heck out of that. Said there wasn’t enough action. Maybe I should buy her bayonetta instead...
@Adhrast It can also be a common nickname for people named Audrey. A simple Google search would have told you that.
@ShadJV I read the article which is why I wrote what I wrote. Audie is a common nickname for the name Audrey, if you had bothered Googling it, you would have known.
@TAndvig I am quite aware, no need for hostility. I agreed that it might be a coincidence, but the odds are a little higher given they chose to go with the same nickname and Audrey’s story was on a lot of gaming websites while this game was in development. I could honestly see it going either way. That’s all I meant!
Can’t wait to meet her!
@TAndvig
I just looked it up to check, and sure enough there's actually an NPC sharing the likeness of Robin Williams in Breath of the Wild. Give it a look, it's fascinating.
Honestly, without confirmation from Nintendo, I think this is just coincidence.
@MotaroRIP She's been gifted the New Horizons Switch, which includes a digital download code of the game. So... probably.
@Spoony_Tech That's exactly what I thought. While I'd love for it to be a tribute like people are saying - it's hardly a unique or unheard of name.
This would be cool but the character doesn't seem to resemble or act like the rl person it's supposed to represent?
