When the hotly anticipated sequel to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild finally arrives, it'll no doubt look almost identical to the first in terms of its overall aesthetic - and in fact, early footage proves that. But what if it didn't?
The images you see before you come from Stephen J. Plant, an artist who has been showing off his talent on Twitter. As you can see, they take scenes from the original Zelda: Breath of the Wild 2 reveal trailer and present them in a style very reminiscent of The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening on Switch, complete with adorable toy-like faces and proportions.
Plant says that the images were made with Blender, an open-source 3D creation suite, and they appear to have gone down wonderfully with those who have stumbled across them on social media. We can see why, too - part of us genuinely wants an option to play the game in this art style now. Lovely stuff!
As for the real game currently in development? We still don't know exactly when it'll be launching, but we have been gathering up every little tidbit of info we know about the game for you. Feel free to take a dive if you want to soak up the hype.
Great job, Stephen! We're loving these!

I wouldn't mind an original spin-off game in that style, but I want BotW2 to look ambitious and beautiful.
How adorable. Definitely doesn't mesh with the seemingly "dark" presentation of the game though.
I both love it and hate it.
I like it a lot!
I'd like this to be an option as these renders are very good. However in BotW 2's case, I prefer what was shown in the trailer.
No thanks. Looks nice but BOTW was a much more attractive style imo.
I'd rather the sequel stay like the 1st game. If this was something else, then cool.
I'd play the f* out of this game. That said, BotW2 must look the same as the first, because feelings.
Not with that stuttering frame rate. Nintendo still haven't patched Awakening's performance issue.
Oh please god no! Botw is still the best game on switch
I'd would skip it.
I really liked the new Links Awakening style and gameplay. I hope they make an original sequel to it or remake other games in the same style
No. I already despise the "most having beady eyes while others have actual eyes" style.
Adorable!!! I love BOTW style but it’s pretty cool seeing other people mock up stuff like this just for fun.
I'd rather just see what Breath of the Wild 2 will look like.
I think staying with the original design that took about 5 years to create still is better, Not saying I don't like it.
It looks like a LEGO Zelda game to be brutally honest. Breath of the Wild was so original in it's look and feel that doing anything but a carbon copy of that style would be tantamount to sin!
Nope. I want BotW 2 to be BotW's dark, twisted, toxic twin. I want it to be the Majora's Mask to my Ocarina of Time, with weird game mechanics and abusive motion blur effects.
It would sell a lot worse, but then 15+ years go by and people will say how awesome it is. I'm looking at you Wind Waker.
That is unbearably cute and creepy at the same time. I'll take ten.
Love it. What I REALLY want is that nes prototype Nintendo made though. Pack it in as a preorder bonus nintendo!
I hate it. I really want this to be the next majoras mask but I feel like it will be like twilight Princess where it tries too hard to be edgy
Remake Majora's Mask and Ocarina of Time in this style. Just saying.
So basically Final Fantasy XV Pocket Edition then?
Sure if they leave the blur out this time!
I want BOTW 2 to push Switch to it’s limits. I want it to be a spectacle of what Switch can do
@T7Hokage017
This isn't from Nintendo, it's fan art.
Very nice fan art that gets the style right to a T, but not official or part of any contest or match from Nintendo.
Link's Awakening on the Switch has such a nice art style. I'd love to see more games use that style. Especially a remake of Oracle of Seasons and Oracle of Ages. But as for Breath of the Wild 2 I'd prefer it to use the original style 😋
Definitely play it but it wouldn't be as good
This would not be appealing to me at all.
Can't stand the remastered Link's Awakening art syle. The world doesn't look terrible but Link's expression is so lifeless. Like those horrible Funko Pop toys. The old Wind Waker/Phantom Hourglass style was way better.
What if those of us who bought Link's Awakening on Virtual Console could access it and all of the other VC ROMs we bought... on our Switches?
Creative art concept, beautifully executed
I like how the torch is a giant matchstick
@AyanamiReign
Right?
While not hideous,
It has certainly taken away from my desire to play this new Awakening..
It's also strange to me how well people have taken to this new style compared to WW's.. :
It wasn't pretty either, but at least it showed so much more personality..
Needless to say,
One Loz in the "lego / funko" style is more than enough ..
If they're going to continue with it, please keep it far away from the main games..
:/
So do you think they are going to use an identical map to what we have now??
I guess they would but we would then know exactly where to go for many things and I can’t see it being as exciting? So many questions about Botw 2 and I cannot wait!.
I hope they add more things in this time like proper fishing, and being able to actually sit down or lie down. Just little things like that as they already got so much right, but I just can’t imagine how they are going to tackle the second without it being the same thing s as the first??
I never cared much for this style, but I'd play it, if it looked fun. My favorite style in Zelda games is like Wind Waker.
I'd love this style, it's so Nintendo.
I will play it too!
I would love a modern 2.5 D zelda game done in that art style. Just not a true 3D game like BOTW2.
I would be pissed. I've tried so hard to like Link's Awakening. But I'm just not really that into it. Maybe because I didn't play the original GameBoy game. I always wanted it, especially when it came out for GameBoy Color. But that would be a huge let down and leap backwards.
Zombie-Ganon looks far more horrifying this way
Whatever the next LoZ looks like, I'll probably play it. It's my favourite series, and despite having stopped collecting video games and stuff, I couldn't say no to that Link's Awakening special edition, or any other new Zelda game/special edition. The OG Game Boy Link's Awakening was my first adventure game, first Zelda game, and first step into gaming and its greatest series ever (I did play TaleSpin and Tetris before). The Game Boy itself was my brother's. It wasn't until the GBC that I had my own, and I only had Game Boy models until I finally could buy my own used Gamecube and a cheap tv just for that later on, and the LoZ collection disc and LTTP GBA port allowed me to catch up on LoZ real quick.
Funny thing: back then I was amazed that I could finally play my favourite handheld games on a tv (with the Game Boy Player), now I'm amazed that I can finally play the games I used to play on a tv anywhere on the Switch. Can't quite put my finger on it, but for some reason, even with a handful of great original games and way more functions and menu customisation, Vita never did it for me.
Oh please god NO. Jesus Christ. Don't even mention it, it just might jinx the title (probably won't, but you can never be too careful).
BotW 2 needs to keep the style BotW had. Amazingly beautiful and ambitious. Serene, even.
Not the playdough cartoony style of Link's Awakening.
I wouldn't buy it, that's what would happen! BOTW looks amazing and it's sequel will too. I never liked Links awakening art style from the first reveal to playing the game.
Fine by me. I love this adorable style. But if I had my way, I'd wish for Minish Cap to get the Link's Awakening makeover.
God, please no!
make a sequel to link's awakening in this style and name it Zelda's nightmare !!!
Alternative title: What if Breath of the Wild looked like trash?
As long as Link is the protagonist and I can play as him, I'm fine.
Worst case scenario! It was one reason I could not play it very long and sold it after a couple of days.
It would look pretty awesome.
I'd be more interested in a remaster of the oracle series. Both game in one package with the addition of the 3rd game that was originally planned around farore. BOTW has it's own graphic style that is perfect, and the insanely cute link's awakening graphics suit better Gameboy remasters
@SortingHat I understood literally none of that.
Also, unsure if you're misunderstanding me? I'm saying BotW should keep its current style. I do NOT want it to look like Link's Awakening.
@Varazadi He's doing a very poor job of it xD
That's very cool!
Lol please no, but hey when children want to play zelda and type their age in, the graphics turn like this so the parents wont complain. I would totally dog it lol.
Please no more ugly Funko Pop wannabes. I'm so sick of this style permeating everything and I want it to hurry up and Die Out of fashion.
LOL, this would totally be the Wind Waker situation all over again back when that game was revealed.
I want to return to Botw, not this cartoon things
No! Proper botw graphics engine or bust
No god please no, no, nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo
