To celebrate this year's Pokémon Day, from now until the 2nd March, Mewtwo and the Kanto region starters will be appearing in Max Raid Battles in Pokémon Sword and Shield. Gigantamax Grimmsnarl, Kingler, Hatterene, Orbeetle and Toxtricity will also show up from time to time.
As exciting as this may sound, unfortunately, you won't be able to catch Mewtwo. While we're sure many trainers would love to stockpile this particular pocket monster, it won't be possible during this limited-time Wild Area event. Instead, you'll receive a bunch of rewards every time you defeat the legendary.
An armored version of Mewtwo has also made its return to the mobile-hit Pokémon GO. This ties in with Pokémon Day and the release of Pokémon: Mewtwo Strikes Back—Evolution on Netflix. Above is a look at the official Japanese trailer for Mewtwo Max Raid Battles in Sword and Shield. We'll share more details when the English Pokémon website is updated.

That's cool, and important too. Hidden Ability Venusaur and Charizard are both going to be very good and important Pokemon in VGC starting next month and it wouldn't be fair to new players if they could not get them.
The need to do this for the Alolan starters too.
I got real lucky breeding Bulbasaurs the other day, hatched a Shiny with its HA! Venusaur entering the meta is gonna be real important, we finally have a good poison type to help balance all the fairy types.
G-max Lapras is gonna be an issue though...
Hey, the chance to get the remaining starters is a good thing in my opinion.
Aw... No catchable Mewtwo gives me the sads... On the other hand, awesome to get the Kanto starters. Great news, I'm about to play Pokémon now after a long day.
Sweet. I’ll definitely hop in and do some max raids this weekend. Actually kinda glad you can’t catch Mewtwo this way, when I first read the headline I thought that you could, and I was kinda bummed.
There aren’t a lot of good grass Pokemon in sword and shield so venasaur is pretty great.
@Heavyarms55 They already released the Gen7 starters with their HAs. Just gotta tranfer them over. Honestly doubt they'll give them outa again so soon.
@ISpawnI That's perfectly great for people who played the 3DS games and have them already. But there are a lot of new players in Sw/Sh and a lot of returning players who have not played for a while.
A big thing about Sw/Sh is that you could get everything you needed/wanted within Sw/Sh itself, without transferring from past games. I really think they need to re-release the Alolan starters this gen, since they will be allowing them on ranked ladder and in official competitions starting March 1st.
It's not a problem for me, and sure, many players can probably trade for what they need. But it's still a somewhat unfair advantage.
And besides, raid battling the Alolan starters would be fun.
what about using a master ball for the mewtwo raids
I hope Mewtwo drops a ton of XL exp candies. I've been breeding a bunch of mons for various competitive teams that I've got brewing in my head but getting them up to level 100 so I can Hyper train that odd imperfect IV or two is wearing on me. Yes, I could continue to breed until I get 6 perfect IVs but I'd rather lick broken glass.
Toxtricity is annoying.
Did they ever fix the matchmaking?
Wait you cant catch mewtwo?Damm i thought i can catch.
I hope all the prev gen starters make their way into the game/raids. I must have my Fennekin line.
@Discostew I would love to have my second favorite pokemon Torterra. I traded a Zapdos for my favorite Tropius. I had a different fave before but I literally took the time to look at every pokemon and decided that Tropius was my #1
Shame I can't catch them, but I understand why.
A max raid battle where you aren't allowed to catch the featured Pokémon? That just sounds like a bad idea.
I get why that's the case, so you can't start getting dozens of Mewtwo, but that still doesn't mean it's not a bad idea.
Okay these raids are balls to the wall hard as hell! Completely unlike any other raid in the game to date! If you don't plan a very specific team to fight them, you don't stand a chance!
@Heavyarms55 What about HA Ditto?...
As exciting as this may sound, unfortunately, you won't be able to catch Mewtwo. What the actual hell is wrong with Gamefreak? What's even the point then?
Mewtwo is really, REALLY hard. Casual players wouldn't really stand much of a chance to catch multiples (if they can even beat it). And let's not give people more reasons to ask for ridiculous trades on the GTS either. This is for the best.
@Reigestugatensho Mewtwo doesn't carry any moves in these raids that are strong against itself so HA ditto isn't great. But even if it did, that would just mean the raid mon could hit your ditto with its pitiful HP, much harder anyway.
Weedle I choose you!!!! 😂😂😂😂
@Manah No, you just flat out don't stand a chance unless you and 3 of your friends have specific, EV-trained Legendaries and are all paying for the Switch Online. Much like the entire Raid mechanic, this was poorly designed in every way possible.
